Ibitinga, which is a Brazilian town nationally known for its outstanding position in the embroidery business, has its economy almost totally based on the production of a broad selection of embroideries. With this embroidery industry in the backdrop, this master thesis describes the whole linguistic and computational-linguistic process of construction of ontolexicons – formal constructs whose lexical-conceptual nature allows for both theoretical (lexical-grammar construction) and applied (lexicographical and ontolexical resource construction) research. In particular, the study focuses on the design and implementation of a toy ontolexicon for the Ibitinga Embroydery Industry lexical-conceptual domain. Its theoretical foundations have drawn heavily on lexical semantics (wordnets), frame semantics (framenets), natural language processing, and ontologies.

Programmable Insight: A Computational Methodology to Explore Online News Use of Frames

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: The Internet is a major source of online news content. Online news is a form of large-scale narrative text with rich, complex contents that embed deep meanings (facts, strategic communication frames, and biases) for shaping and transitioning standards, values, attitudes, and beliefs of the masses. Currently, this body of narrative text remains untapped due—in large part—to human limitations. The human ability to comprehend rich text and extract hidden meanings is far superior to known computational algorithms but remains unscalable. In this research, computational treatment is given to online news framing for exposing a deeper level of expressivity coined “double subjectivity” as characterized by its cumulative amplification effects. A visual language is offered for extracting spatial and temporal dynamics of double subjectivity that may give insight into social influence about critical issues, such as environmental, economic, or political discourse. This research offers benefits of 1) scalability for processing hidden meanings in big data and 2) visibility of the entire network dynamics over time and space to give users insight into the current status and future trends of mass communication. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Computer Science 2017

The elongation of beams in reinforced concrete special moment resisting frames

Liuzza, Gabrielle January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science / Donald J. Phillippi / Special moment resisting frames (SMRF) are intended to protect the structure from earthquake motions through a ductile inelastic response. This thesis evaluates the performance of reinforced concrete SMRFs with an emphasis on the second level beams. Due to previous research, it is concluded that two-dimensional finite element analyses (2D-FEA) and three-dimensional finite element analyses (3D-FEA) have different results when evaluating the same structure. Due to this, the thesis used a 3D-FEA to analyze frames based on Design Example 7 in the 2006 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual (Appendix A). While looking at the frame as a whole, the first of two parametric studies was performed over the columns. Using LS-DYNA the columns’ forces, displacement, moment, and curvature were evaluated. From these results, it was concluded that in SMRF, columns are not acting per current design assumptions due to the elongation of beams. Using the knowledge gained in the first parametric study, a second parametric study was performed on the second level floor beams. Focusing on the beam elongation, this thesis evaluates multiple frames with different load combinations using LS-DYNA to find the displacement of the reinforcement in the beams. With the results, an equation to calculate the elongation of beams was proposed, as well as an average percentage of the elongation in reinforced concrete SMRF. The equation and average percentage of elongation aim to provide a standard design consideration for the elongation of beams.

Cognitive Frames for Sustainability: A Bilateral Concept? : An Application to the German Agriculture Sector

Kobilke, Johanna, Litterst, Leoni January 2018 (has links)
Throughout the past decades, global institutions and private actors have stepped into action in order to determine how a more sustainable development can be achieved in the future. The role of private organizations in this process, is still subject to ongoing debate in both research and practice. How individual managers perceive and integrate sustainability into their business, can be assessed with cognition theory. It is assumed that cognitive frames play a role, when dealing with this complex topic. One approach to evaluate such frames is to develop several characteristics that define the way these frames are shaped. Those indicate whether someone perceives sustainability as a mere business case or rather as a more complex, paradox issue that needs to integrate several, often conflicting demands. The aim of this thesis is to develop a better understanding for how specific cognitive frames are present in the perception of social, environmental and economic sustainability demands and their relation to the respective organization by individual managers. Through a quantitative study a theoretical framework, which is differentiating managers along thetypology of the ‘Business Case Frame’ and opposed to that the ‘Paradoxical Frame’, is tested and analyzed. The study is conducted in the agricultural sector in Germany. Finally, it is suggested to extend the existing framework by two additional cognitive frames to contribute to the ongoing debate around business sustainability. Consequently, a differentiated understanding of the role of cognitive frames for sustainability in practice is encouraged.

No. of bitstreams: 1 DissLAB.pdf: 1245408 bytes, checksum: ac0874f547e5f477048936330c37d4be (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-03-11 / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) / Theory of Mind is conventionally defined as the ability to understand and make inferences about one’s own mental states (i.e., desires, intentions and beliefs) and those of other people, and based on this repertoire, one can predict and explain human behavior. Recent research, supported by Relational Frame Theory (RFT), has emphasized the role of perspective taking in the development of Theory of Mind. Results suggest that children who undergo perspective-taking training show improved performance in Theory of Mind tasks. The goal of the present study was to administer the Perspective Taking Protocol, used in these previous studies, in Brazilian children with low performance in theory of mind tasks. Three studies were conducted, two of them being pilot studies, which revealed the need for adaptations to the original procedure. Study 1 aimed to test the original protocol with one child aged 4 years and 9 months. The protocol consisted in the presentation of blocks of simple verbal trials and trials including reversal and double reversal of roles with the experimenter. Trials included the deictic frames I-YOU, HERE-THERE and NOW-THEN. The protocol, however, proved to be incompatible with the child’s repertoire, that is, he did not meet the learning criteria established in the original study. In order to test the difficulty level of the protocol, in Study 2, two young university students received the same training. Data suggested that the two adult participants succeeded in completing the protocol, having met criteria; however, they did face difficulties during the procedure. In Study 3, four participants, aged 4 and 5, were administered an adapted version of the protocol. In order to train reversed trials, physical tips (i.e., cards) and gestural signs were used and were gradually withdrawn until participants could respond without any assistance. Participants were also evaluated in three tasks of Theory of Mind, before and after the teaching procedure. During training, children were able to respond correctly on the reversed trials, even after removal of physical tips. All four participants showed improved performance in Theory of Mind tasks after training, with scores 1 or 2 points higher (scores could vary from 0 to 3), in comparison to pretest. Results suggest that, despite the evidence showing that the Perspective Taking Protocol is effective, it should be altered in order to be consistent with the repertoire of children with quite distinct characteristics from those who participated in the original study. In the case of children participating in the present research, changes in the distribution of trials throughout training blocks, as well as changes in the format of those trials had a positive learning effect. We hope the results of the present study may encourage future work on the potential benefits of procedures aimed at perspective taking training, in particular, with individuals who present delays or difficulties in social cognition. As tentativas englobavam as molduras dêiticas EU-VOCÊ, AQUI-AÍ e AGORA-ENTÃO.

Ronszcka, Adriano Francisco 31 August 2012 (has links)
The original materialization of Notification Oriented Paradigm (NOP) previously implemented in the C++ programming language allowed the creation of applications under the domain of this paradigm. Although these contributions to the paradigm, the development of NOP applications still has a low level of maturity and a certain degree of difficulty. Such difficulties arise essentially from the new form of structuring programs, in which such applications follow a notification flow, which differs from the conventional programming. Moreover, so far, only a few applications have been developed, with relatively small scope, which does not contribute effectively to the consolidation of the paradigm, and particularly for learning through an effective set of examples. Henceforth, firstly, the general structure of the framework has been reread and reintroduced under the bias of design patterns, even as there were contributions in its implementation. Subsequently, the main goal of this paper is to guide the development of applications based on NOP in a more streamlined and efficient manner, using the advances mentioned here. This was achieved particularly by the presentation of technical software implementations aimed to this paradigm and its infrastructure, which pursues a manner to conceive more purist implementations, involving issues such as reducing the use of multiparadigms implementations, simplifying the development, ensuring determinism, and so far. In general, the new features for conceiving applications based on the NOP Framework made easier and better its use.

This thesis aims to investigate how deaf Brazilian Language Signals? (Libras) speakers construct meanings, basing on Cognitive Linguistic, particularly Language Neural Theory. According to the theoretical assumptions, this study uses categorization notions (LAKOFF, 1987; DUQUE, 2001, 2002); corporality (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1999; DUQUE; COSTA, 2011, 2012; BERGEN, 2008); and narrative (DUQUE, 2012; LAKOFF, 2008). In addition to this, it presents analytical categories as schemes-I (LAKOFF, 1987; JOHNSON, 1987); schemes-X (FELDMAN, 2006); frames (FILLMORE, 1976, 1982; DUQUE, 2015); Libras conceptual metaphors and metonymy (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1999, 1980, 2002; GIBBS, 1994, 1999, 2005). This thesis confirms sense meaning in narratives of the deaf Libras? speakers links cognitive processes related to actions and perceptions in the world. In this sense, language is not apart from creator?s processes that reflect general thinking individual processes when they create their meanings and they adapt different interaction contexts with other subjects. This research has as corpus videos with deaf Libras? speakers (experimental group) and deaf Libras? listeners (control group), this study has a qualitative nature, with empirical methodology quasi-experimental (MONTERO; LEON, 2007). Data analyses point to the existence of models related to a particular way that deaf Libras? speakers understand their relationships with the world and with specific concepts, cognitively built, using visual motor language. Neural circuity activation collaborates to the hypothesis that deaf Libras? speakers explore visual field; they add other conceptual aspects related to the form and movement of the objects (spatial order, focus and attention); linguistic index (signals) that activate schemes-I and schemes-X, frames, and the signal that has a metaphorical and/or metonymical base. The critical analyze about the occurrences of cognitive signal by the speakers suggests Libras teaching must considerate cognitive processes activation mechanisms during language signalization, whose experiences appear in a not hearing space.

This research aims to investigate the way senses cognitively understood in Roberto and Erasmo Carlos lyrics from 80?s related to, specifically, NATURE and SEX concepts. To this, it adopts frames model applied to discuss analyzes (DUQUE, 2015), with this, it is possible to verify cognitive mechanisms activation based on various dimensions, and to identify a sense reticulated structure around discuss. To reach out objectives, it takes support in the Cognitive Linguistic of an embodied base, particularly some principles as categorizations notions (WITTGENSTEIN, 1953; ROSCH et al., 1976; LAKOFF, 1987) and embodiment (MERLEAU-PONTY, 1945, 1964; LAKOFF, JOHNSON, 1999; EVANS, GREEN, 2006), as well as two analytical categories: frames (FILLMORE, 1976; GALLESE, LAKOFF, 2005; FELDMAN, 2006; LAKOFF, 2009; LAKOFF, WEHLING, 2012; DUQUE, 2015) and metaphors (LAKOFF, JOHNSON, 1980 [2002]; LAKOFF, 2008). This research has a qualitative nature, since analyze is related to a totality of a specific phenomenon, sense construction, to this, it does not use numerical representatives or values quantification (GERHARDT; SILVEIRA, 2009). Information from analyzes suggest a pattern about the way this thematic is cognitively built in the lyrics written by Roberto and Erasmo Carlos in 80?s, with a moral conservatism perspective used to treat NATURE and SEX subjects.

This study investigates the meaning construction processes in narratives based on theoretical assumptions of Cognitive Linguistics (CL), which supports the principle that the relationship between language and the world is mediated by cognition. It discusses, therefore, the idea that language is formed on the interaction between the human biological apparatus and cultural experience, basic components in the process of construction of meaning, as studied by Lakoff and Johnson (1999); Johnson (2007), and Damasio (2011). We argue specifically that human communicative interaction arises from the cognitive ability to construct narratives (TURNER, 1996, 2006; LAKOFF, 2008; LAKOFF and NARAYANAN, 2010) and to activate speech frames. These frames arise from the match between conceptual domains, structured by abstract descriptive schemes of space and movement (scheme-I and X-schemes) and communicative frames (dimensions of frames). This work also proposes a constructional analysis model of narrative and discourse, based on the description of the cognitive mechanisms that participate in the process of meaning construction in fabulous narratives. The research is qualitative and the method employed is introspective, which is guided by the views of the researcher (TALMY, 2005), but anchored in the theoretical premises of CL and compared to data collected in corpora. The corpora, in turn, consisted of a set of fables drawn from the works of Aesop (2006), Phaedrus (2001), La Fontaine ([2008?]), Monteiro Lobato (2008) and Sergio Caparrelli, and Marcia Schmaltz (2012). The analyses of these fables pointed to the centrality of frames (FILLMORE, 1977) and to the process of mental simulation (BARSALOU, 1999) in the meaning construction process in narratives. They also suggest that the social cognitive role of speech in social acculturation process (VAN DIJK, 2012) is basically structured in the combination of descriptive schemes and by the confrontation of discursive frames. Therefore, we consider, in this work, that storytelling is one of the most important cognitive mechanisms in the construction process and in the projection of real or fictitious experiences; and that the action of storytelling seems to lead us, as cognitive beings, to simulate attitudes, causes, effects and intentions of the ones involved in the story. We believe that this work can contribute to cognitive studies about the comprehension of texts, speeches and embodied grammar.
