Fronteras permeables entre la novela y el teatro mediterráneos: Estudio comparativo de Cervantes y Pirandello

En el presente trabajo llevo a cabo un estudio comparativo de las técnicas teatrales y metateatrales que utilizaron el novelista español del Siglo de Oro Miguel de Cervantes en la Segunda Parte de Don Quijote de La Mancha y el dramaturgo modernista italiano Luigi Pirandello en las obras teatrales Sei Personaggi in Cerca d'Autore y Enrico IV. Si bien estos dos autores han sido objeto de numerosos estudios por separado, en la actualidad no existen análisis comparativos de sus obras. Para investigar la utilización que hicieron de técnicas teatrales y metateatrales, parto del teatro griego clásico como tertium comparationis. Pese a que durante mucho tiempo el concepto de metateatro se consideró incompatible con el teatro clásico, la relación entre los dos ha comenzado a reconsiderarse en los últimos tiempos. En mi estudio me baso en las publicaciones más recientes sobre el tema y muestro la importancia del teatro griego clásico para la metateatralidad cervantina y pirandelliana. Lo hago, en primer lugar, trazando el interés de Cervantes por la cultura mediterránea (en concreto, por la Commedia dell’Arte italiana) y, a través de esta, por el teatro griego clásico. Luego me aproximo a través del folclore siciliano a la filosofía del teatro de Pirandello, la cual, aunque se suele identificar con los movimientos de vanguardia europeos de comienzos del siglo XX, se nutrió profundamente de la filosofía y la tragedia griegas. Seguidamente procedo a examinar las técnicas teatrales y metateatrales cervantinas y pirandellianas desde la perspectiva de algunos topoi clave del teatro griego clásico. Asimismo, hago un repaso por los temas clave que comparten Don Quijote de La Mancha, Sei Personaggi in Cerca d'Autore y Enrico IV y su relación con el teatro griego clásico mediante el análisis de las técnicas teatrales y metateatrales de las que se valieron sus autores. Por último, me enfoco en una de dichas técnicas (el uso de títeres) para ilustrar la recurrencia de motivos y temas entre lo clásico (el teatro griego), lo moderno temprano (Cervantes) y lo vanguardista (Pirandello). En este caso, voy más allá de Cervantes y Pirandello para incluir al poeta y dramaturgo modernista español Federico García Lorca, quien fue contemporáneo del dramaturgo italiano y que compartía con él el interés en renovar el panorama teatral de su época regresando al novelista español del Siglo de Oro y, por extensión, al teatro griego clásico.

This dissertation explores verbal and visual representations of the abject body in Federico García Lorca’s Poeta en Nueva York (published 1940), Viaje a la luna (1929), El público (1930-1931), and his drawings from 1929-1930. Grounded in queer theory, transgender studies, and Blackness studies, I explore how Lorca’s images of somatic abjection challenge hegemonic ideas of gender, sexuality, and race in the depiction of queer and otherwise marginalized identities. The dissertation focuses on abjection in three major poems from Poeta en Nueva York, beginning with “Oda a Walt Whitman.” In Chapter 1, I identify an Apollonian-Dionysian dichotomy between the figure of Whitman and the urban maricas, and explore how the abject effeminacy of the latter, and their excessively feminine performances, challenge the heterosexual reproductive order. Chapter 2 examines the abject fluids of vomit and blood in “Paisaje de la multitud que vomita” and “El Rey de Harlem.” I analyze the correlation between the mujer gorda’s physical size and her abject, Dionysian “vomiting multitude.” The second part of the chapter reads “El Rey de Harlem” in the light of Frantz Fanon’s racial phenomenology in order to explore Lorca’s representations of Blackness and masculinity. I argue that the primitivist motifs of blood, music, and nature associated here with erotic representations of the Black masculine body create an ambivalent poem that is at once empowering and exoticizing. Chapter 3 analyzes the uncompleted film scenario Viaje a la luna, which I contend portrays queer anxieties about gender and sexuality through the “nervous gestures” and exposed body of the protagonist. Discussion of the scenario leads to discussion of abjection in the drawing Muerte de Santa Rodegunda. I argue that in Lorca’s drawings of mutilated and plant-like bodies, we see a transformative vision of what a body can be, one that pushes at the boundaries of the human. Finally, in Chapter 4, I argue for a genderqueer reading of the transgressive play El público. Performance theory, queer theory of sadomasochism and anality, transgender theory, and explorations of X-ray technology in the twentieth century help me dissect what has been called Lorca’s “impossible play.”

This work aims to delve into the inner world of the composer Federico Mompou (1893-1987) with special focus on the artistic and philosophic concepts that make his aesthetic so unique within music history. Thereore, apart from biographical data, the connections between his music and ideas that belong to the existentialist and pantheist movements will be presented. Nevertheless, the ultimate objective of this project is the configuration of a piano solo recital program which, containing works from different periods and composers shows the essence of Mompou's inner world to the audience. For that, I have focused on the part of that world that is presented in what I have called his "mystic music" (pieces inspired by the imagination of the spiritual, religious or magic universe). The process of selection of the program is fully explained and justified in the thesis.

The “Man Walks Outside Time Now”: Verbal Representations of Photographic Images in the Poems of Larry Levis

The poet Larry Levis often employed ekphrasis as an elegiac device—particularly with his verbal descriptions of photographic images—to explore human suffering and reconcile feelings of loss. Through the ekphrastic mode, Levis could juxtapose otherwise disparate images, manipulating their temporal and spatial relationships, to achieve what he conceived an authentic portrait of the human experience. The poet, through his verbal descriptions of photographic images, does not try to evade the pain or joy of being human; instead, he confronts his grief directly and, in so doing, transcends that suffering to better understand himself and his own human position. This thesis analyzes the following poems by Larry Levis: “My Only Photograph of Weldon Kees,” “García Lorca: A Photograph of the Granada Cemetery, 1966,” “The Assimilation of the Gypsies,” “Sensationalism,” and “Photograph: Migrant Worker, Parlier, California, 1967.”

An Investigation of the Traditional Cante Jondo as the Inspiration for the Song Cycle Five Poems of Garcia Lorca by Elisenda Fabregas

The traditional cante jondo is a song unique to Andalusia as it developed from the "mosaic" of cultures that have inhabited its borders, including Arabs, Jews and Gypsies. The genre expresses the history of the region, reveals the typography of the landscape and cries the tears of its people. "Deep song," the translation for cante jondo, is the forerunner of the flamenco, but it is a communication of a dark soul rather than an exuberant entertainment. The original folk idiom is a medium less concerned with beauty than the cathartic release of pain of every day life. It expresses the soul of Andalusia. This study explores the history and the poetic and musical forms Andalusian cante jondo as the inspiration for the poetry of Federico Garcia Lorca set by Elisenda Fabregas in the song cycle, Five Poems of Garcia Lorca (1992). Lorca felt the validity of "deep song" and he was disturbed that it was being corrupted by commercialism and was afraid it would be lost to posterity. His goal was to preserve the essence of the song and lift it to an artistic plain. He saw folk music as the core of the national musical and literary identity in Germany, France and Russia and worked to establish Spain as an artistic equal. Lorca's writings were not imitations of the traditional cante jondo. They echoed the history, the landscape and the tears, but they did so through symbolism and vivid imagery. The poet communicated on several levels, one as a voice of Andalusia, Spain and ultimately mankind and another with his own private message. His life was short, but his legacy is long. Fabregas, like Lorca, has taken a folk medium and expanded it beyond its original boundaries. Being of Spanish heritage, but not Andalusian, she is less committed to the local musical constraints. She felt the humanity in Lorca's poetic cries and expressed them through her own language. As a result her songs are intensely dramatic and are exciting pieces to perform.

Getting away of the neo-realistic filmmakers, Fellini tells about the Italian s social reality throw popular shows. The artists assume a role of mediator of Fellini s critic and, from them, establish a contradiction: the arising industrial world in conflict with the Italian identity previously established. Accordingly, the construction of a more structured analysis is where this work goes, considering Fellini s filmic organization issue which converges circus, theater, television and cinema, documentary and fiction creating an intriguing audiovisual possibility provided by television language insertion in the clownish and cinematographic work of Fellini. The exogenous factor, linked with the north american influence, gets hold of the cultural italian ground, changing it. Fellini portrays the encounter between the world of the spectacle and the cinema with televisable media, which, in the path of technological development, planted root in Italian ground. Between losses and damage, the films emphasize the constant movement and adaptation of the spectacles, of the cinematographic language and the own Fellini s style forefront a new differential. Considering those implications, the study focus in the importance of the Fellini s filmic route to defend the hypothesis of the restructure of his language from the advent of TV as a means of mass communication, fact shown in his first movie realized for TV, Block Notes di un Regista (1969). In order of arguing this hypothesis, was made necessary considering and analyzing another Fellini s movies realized for TV: I Clowns (1970) e Prova d orquestra (1978). Another three movies made for cinema, nevertheless with televisable thematic, Ginger e Fred (1985), Intervista (1987), La Voce della Luna (1989), also was elucidated and evaluated. Therefore could have seen that Fellini s filmic aesthetics came from the popular spectacles to gain television in its languages and purposes, converging documentary and fiction, television and cinema / O estudo parte da premissa de Luis Renato Martins, na qual, em seu livro Conflito e interpretações em Fellini (1994), se contrapõe a voga de cinema autobiográfico para a obra de Fellini estabelecendo no lugar, vertentes mais interessantes e pertinentes às leituras e análises fílmicas, como por exemplo: a paródia como arma crítica, a discussão da cultura de massa, o fascismo e suas matrizes históricas. Afastando-se dos cineastas neo-realistas, Fellini conta sobre a realidade social italiana via espetáculos populares. Os artistas assumem o papel de mediadores da crítica felliniana e, a partir deles, estabelece-se uma oposição: o crescente mundo industrial em conflito com a identidade italiana anteriormente estabelecida. Nesse sentido, de construção de uma análise mais fundamentada, é que esse trabalho se envereda, considerando a questão da estruturação fílmica felliniana que converge circo, teatro, televisão e cinema, documentário e ficção criando uma intrigante possibilidade audiovisual proporcionada pela inserção da linguagem televisiva na obra clowesca e cinematográfica de Fellini. O fator exógeno, ligado à marcada influência norte-americana, se apossa do terreno cultural italiano, transformando-o. Fellini retrata o encontro do mundo dos espetáculos e do cinema com a mídia televisiva que, na esteira do desenvolvimento tecnológico, fincou raízes em solo italiano. Entre perdas e danos, os filmes ressaltam o constante movimento e adaptação dos espetáculos, da linguagem cinematográfica e do próprio estilo felliniano frente ao novo referencial. Considerando essas imbricações, o estudo privilegia a importância do percurso fílmico felliniano para defender a hipótese da reestruturação de sua linguagem a partir do advento da TV como meio de comunicação de massa, fato evidenciado em seu primeiro filme realizado para a TV, Block Notes di un Regista (1969). No intuito de argumentar essa hipótese, fez-se necessário considerar e analisar outros filmes de Fellini realizados para a TV: I Clowns (1970) e Prova d orquestra (1978). Outros três filmes feitos para o cinema, porém com temática televisiva, Ginger e Fred (1985), Intervista (1987), La Voce della Luna (1989), também foram elucidados e avaliados.
