EMO - A Computational Emotional State Module : Emotions and their influence on the behaviour of autonomous agentsEsbjörnsson, Jimmy January 2007 (has links)
<p>Artificial intelligence (AI) is already a fundamental component of computer games. In this context is emotions a growing part in simulating real life. The proposed emotional state module, provides a way for the game agents to select an action in real-time virtual environments. The modules function has been tested with the open-source strategy game ORTS. This thesis proposes a new approach for the design of an interacting network, similar to a spreading activation system, of emotional states that keeps track of emotion intensities changing and interacting over time. The network of emotions can represent any number of persisting states, such as moods, emotions and drives. Any emotional signal can affect every state positively or negatively. The states' response to emotional signals are influenced by the other states represented in the network. The network is contained within an emotional state module. This interactions between emotions are not the focus of much research, neither is the representation model. The focus tend to be on the mechanisms eliciting emotions and on how to express the emotions.</p>

<p>Idag lever cirka 33 miljoner människor med HIV/Aids. Totalt har omkring 30 miljoner människor avlidit sedan första Aids- fallet diagnostiserades år 1981. I västvärlden har HIV-smittade en tät kontakt med sjukvården eftersom de går på regelbundna kontroller, därmed är sjuksköterskor en yrkeskategori som träffar dessa patienter ofta. I utvecklingsländerna ser det ofta tyvärr annorlunda ut, HIV-smittade har ingen eller gles kontakt med sjukvården. Syftet med studien var att belysa sjuksköterskans upplevelser i omvårdnaden av HIV/Aids patienter. Uppsatsen genomfördes som en litteraturstudie där 14 vetenskapliga artiklar granskades, bearbetades och analyserades. Resultatet visade att sjuksköterskornas upplevelser av att vårda HIV/Aids patienter varierade. Positiva upplevelser kunde bland annat vara att arbetet var utvecklande och sjuksköterskorna kände sig viktiga för patienterna. Negativa upplevelser var bland annat rädsla och brist på resurser. Att vårda patienter med HIV/Aids kräver god kunskap om både sjukdomen och adekvata omvårdnadsåtgärder. Mer utbildning inom området efterlyses i sjuksköterskans grundutbildning. Informal caregivers' conceptions of daily life with a spouse having chronic obstructive pulmonary diseaseLindqvist, Gunilla January 2013 (has links)
The overall aim of this thesis was to explore informal caregivers’ daily life with particular focus on those living with a spouse who has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in different grades, mild to severe, based on the ill person’s main concern. The study design was explorative, comparative and descriptive. The thesis included a literature review of 45 scientific articles and semi-structured interviews with 23 patients suffering from COPD, and 21 women and 19 men living with a spouse suffering from COPD. Data were analysed using content analysis, grounded theory, and phenomenography. Main findings: Men and women living with a spouse suffering from mild COPD did not experience changes in their daily life, and were not in need of support. It was when the COPD gradually escalated that their daily life was affected and they needed support. The caregiving women conceived that their daily life was socially restricted, they had changed roles, changes in health and changes in the couple’s relationship. The caregiving men’s daily life was conceived as burdened, restricted and the partner relationship was affected. The men’s attitude was to continue with their own life and own activities, and their approach to their caregiving situation was to view themselves as “Me and my spouse”. The main concern for people suffering from COPD was feelings of guilt due to self-inflicted disease associated with smoking habits. The thesis shows that there are differences in informal caregiving between males and females. Conclusion: This thesis shows that there are differences in male and female caregiving for a spouse suffering from COPD. The caregivers conceive and handle the caregiving situation in different ways. It is central that health professionals and municipality consider this along with the individual needs that are related to the development of the COPD. There is a need to identify the person who suffers from COPD and their spouses from the first contact onwards, to regularly follow the development of their situation and need of support.

Among philosophers of the emotions, it is common to view emotional content as purely descriptive – that is, belief-like or perception-like. I argue that this is a mistake. The intentionality of the emotions cannot be understood in isolation from their motivational character, and emotional content is also inherently directive – that is, desire-like. This view’s strength is its ability to explain a class of emotional behaviors that I argue, the common view fails to explain adequately. I claim that it is already implicit in leading theories of emotion elicitation in cognitive psychology – “appraisal theories.” The result is a deeper understanding of emotional intentionality. Employing Peter Goldie’s “Feeling Theory” of the emotions as an example of the common view, I suggest that emotional feelings, too, should be understood on this model: emotional feelings toward items in the world cannot be disentangled from felt motivation.

Klimatfrågan är idag mer aktuell än någonsin tidigare. Detta beror på den akuta situation som vi levande på jorden faktiskt befinner oss i. Det har nästan alltid funnits hot mot vårt klimat, men det är först idag som vi tydligt börjar se följderna av vårt tidigare handlande och det jag syftar på är den förstärkta växthuseffekten och dess konsekvenser. Syftet med studien är att utifrån en lärandesituation i form av ett rollspel beskriva elevers handlingsberedskap och känslor kring växthuseffekten. Frågeställningarna är följande. Hur utvecklas elevernas kunskap och handlingsberedskap kring växthuseffekten genom ett rollspel? Hur påverkar rollspelet elevernas känslor för växthuseffekten? Studien som genomfördes i en årskurs 9 startade med en enkät där eleverna fick svara på frågor gällande växthuseffekten, deras eget handlande och deras känslor. Enkäten åtföljdes av ett rollspel där frågor kring växthuseffekten och dess konsekvenser diskuterades av de deltagande ländernas delegater. Efter rollspelet fick eleverna svara på samma enkät igen för att ta reda om rollspelet hade påverkat eleverna. Rollspelet har bidragit till att eleverna har tillägnat sig mer och djupare kunskaper kring växthuseffekten samt att de har gått från ett lokalt till ett mer globalt tänkande. Handlingsberedskapen hos eleverna var inte så stor och de känner inte någon direkt oro inför framtiden, men efter rollspelet blev de mer bekymrade över andra människors framtid. Liten oro hos eleverna kan bero på att Sverige inte direkt ligger i riskzonen och deras handlingsberedskap speglas av att de inte vill ändra på något som skulle förändra deras vardag. / Issues concerning the climate change are more urgent than ever before. During the last couple of hundred years the climate has been threatened by different causes, but it is not until today we are facing the consequences of our former action towards the environment. I allude to the greenhouse effect and its consequences. My aim with this paper is, from a teaching situation through a role play, to describe pupils’ action readiness and feelings concerning the green house effect. The questions I will find answers to are. How pupils’ knowledge and action readiness concerning the green house effect develops through a role play? How the role play affects the pupils’ feelings concerning the green house effect? The study has been carried out in a grade 9. The pupils began answering a questionnaire regarding the green house effect, their own actions and their feelings. Afterwards they carried out a role play where the green house effect and its consequences where discussed. To find out if the role play had influenced the pupils they afterwards had to fill in the same form again. The contribution of the role play is that the pupils have acquired deeper knowledge concerning the green house effect and their thoughts have become more global. The study showed that their action readiness was not particularly big and they were not worried about the future. Sweden is not in the danger zone and that can have contributed to their non worried attitude. Their action readiness is coloured by the fact that they do not want to change anything that would affect their ordinary day.

This study is focused on some individuals' experience of the concept of culture in their everyday life. Some questions about culture were asked to some persons living in a small village in the isle of Gotland and some persons in the capital of Sweden, Stockholm, in the autumn in 2007 in a field study. The study showed that peopele tend to shape their own life world in the continuous activity in their near surroundings, in the garden and in reading literature and listening to music. There were some differences in the life world depending on where they lived, in the country side or in town. Urban life has more offers as to popera and theatres but negatively more violence and stress. A study of literature on the ethnological concept of culture is included. The answers of the individuals also led to different topics such as nostalgia, mind, fear, feelings, body and soul which were enlightened by scientist from the respective fields.

I en värld där konsumenten dagligen överöses av kommersiella budskap är det många gånger svårt, för att inte säga omöjligt, för företag att synas. Ett tuffare klimat kräver tuffare tillvägagångssätt, vilket har resulterat i nya marknadsföringsmetoder. En av dessa nya metoder är provokativ marknadsföring som vänder sig till betraktarens känslor genom provokation. Provokativ reklam och dess effekter på konsumenter har undersökts tidigare. Dessa studier har emellertid övervägande fokuserat på provokation i form av sexuella stimuli, varför det råder stor osäkerhet om hur andra provokationsformer i reklamsammanhang mottas av konsumenter. Som ett första led att ge råd i denna fråga har därför en kvalitativ studie med fokusgrupper som undersökningsmetod utförts, i syfte att identifiera vilken typ av känslor och attityder som väcks hos konsumenter när de exponeras för provokativ reklam innehållande andra element än sex, nakenhet och erotik. Fyra reklamfilmer innehållande provocerande element har studerats och resultaten visar att nämnd form av provokation väcker många känslor som är av både bipolärt och komplext slag. De attityder till avsändaren som uppstår har visat sig vara av främst positivt slag när ändamålet är gott. Vidare har provokativ reklam visat sig vara mer lämplig när målet är att uppnå erinran snarare än att informera om specifika produkter. / In a world where consumers are showered with commercial messages, being noticed is hard, not to say impossible. A tougher climate requires tougher approaches, which has led to new marketing methods. One of those new methods is provocative advertising, which appeals to the consumer’s feelings by means of provocation. Provocative advertising and its effects on consumers might have been studied before. However, those studies have mainly been focused on provocation in terms of sexual stimulus. How other provocations than those affect consumers are therefore associated with a lot of insecurity. As a first step in giving advice in this matter, a qualitative study with focus groups has been executed, with the aim of identifying which kind of feelings and attitudes take place in the consumers’ mind after being exposed for provocative TV commercials, including other elements than sex, nudity and erotic. Four TV commercials containing provocative elements have been studied and the results show that the kind of provocation mentioned above raises a lot of feelings which are both bipolar and complex. The attitudes to the sender that arises have appeared to be positive when it is for a good purpose. Provocative advertising furthermore appears to be more useful when the aim is to remind consumers rather than giving information about specific products.

Οι σεισμοί και οι ηφαιστειακές εκρήξεις αποτελούν την επιφανειακή έκφραση μιας δυναμικής του βάθους. Αυτό από μόνο του παραπέμπει σε κάτι μη απτό και μη άμεσα παρατηρήσιμο. Όμως τα δύο αυτά φαινόμενα καταφέρνουν να κεντρίσουν το ενδιαφέρον μικρών και μεγάλων κάνοντάς τους να σχηματίζουν τις δικές τους παραστάσεις για τις δύο έννοιες. Στην παρούσα έρευνα, μελετήσαμε τις ιδέες που κατέχουν τα παιδιά της προσχολικής ηλικίας για τους σεισμούς, τα ηφαίστεια και τη δημιουργία αυτών, πριν αλλά και μετά από μια οργανωμένη διδακτική παρέμβαση. Επίσης, έγινε προσπάθεια καταγραφής των συναισθημάτων που εκφράζονται από τα παιδιά για το φαινόμενο του σεισμού αλλά και των μέτρων προστασίας που τείνουν να υιοθετούν σε μια τέτοια περίσταση. Το δείγμα αποτέλεσαν 63 παιδιά προσχολικής ηλικίας από ένα δημόσιο Νηπιαγωγείο στην ευρύτερη περιοχή της Πάτρας. Τα παιδιά φάνηκε πως είχαν σχηματίσει ήδη πριν τη διδακτική παρέμβαση κάποιες πρώτες παραστάσεις για τα φαινόμενα αυτά. Μετά την ολοκλήρωση της διδακτικής παρέμβασης παρατηρήθηκε ότι οι παραστάσεις αυτές βελτιώθηκαν αρκετά με κάποιες από αυτές να πλησιάζουν αρκετά το επιστημονικό μοντέλο. Τέλος, τα συναισθήματα που εκφράστηκαν από τα παιδιά καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της μελέτης αυτής σχετίζονταν με την κατανόηση της σημαντικότητας του εν λόγω θέματος: παρατηρήθηκε μια μετάβαση από το συναίσθημα φόβου ή πανικού σε συναισθήματα που είχαν να κάνουν περισσότερο με ηρεμία και διατήρηση της ψυχραιμίας προκειμένου να προστατευθούν σε περίπτωση σεισμού. / Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are the surface expression of a dynamic depth. This by itself refers to something intangible and not directly observable; but these two phenomena manage to pique the interest of both preschoolers and adults and make them form their own representations for both concepts. In this research, we studied the ideas held by the preschoolers on earthquakes, volcanoes and the creation of these two, before and after an organized teaching intervention. Also, an attempt was made to record the emotions expressed by children about the earthquakes and the protective measures they tend to adopt in such situations. The sample consisted of 63 preschool children from a public kindergarten located in the city of Patras. Ever before the teaching intervention, children had already formed some early representations for these phenomena, representations that were enriched (approaching even the scientific model) after the didactic intervention had been completed. Finally, the feelings expressed by the children throughout the study resulted from the understanding of the significance of this issue: there was a transition from the feeling of fear or panic to feelings that had more to do with staying calm and keeping their composure (in order to protect themselves) in a case of an earthquake.
