Urban Aquaponics : Sustainable Integration of Aquaponics within the City of Malmö

Alawad, Gharam, Alawad, Maram January 2022 (has links)
With increasing urban expansion and rising global demand for food production, integrating aquaponics within the urban contexts can be considered an alternative sustainable solution to enrich the local production and self-sufficiency. In this research, we aim to study the aquaponics system and provide a design guide for implementing the urban version of the system in the city of Malmo. The design guide will be also practically tested in a form of an architectural proposal at the end of the research. To reach the results, various case studies and academic research were investigated. In addition to other qualitative and quantitative methodologies, such as interviews, questionnaire, and ethnographic studies that contributed to making progress during the research’s different phases. The analysis of data was to generate sustainable bases for urban aquaponics that go in line with the city’s conditions and citizens’ aspirations. Accordingly, several methods and techniques were deducted to be used for the sustainable integration of the aquaponics system within the urban context of Malmo. Nevertheless, the integration process can contribute to including other operations with the aim of increasing aquaponics sustainability and solving urban issues within the context. However, the design guide produced in this paper is mainly for the city of Malmo, but it can be adjusted to other social and geographical contexts.

Ill fares the Land? The concept of national food self sufficiency in political discourse 1880-1939.

Hargreaves, David William January 2012 (has links)
After the repeal of the Corn Laws ended the policy of protectionism which had enabled Britain to feed herself from within her own resources, free trade resulted in domestic food production constituting only 30% of the British diet. This study looks at the political discourse from 1880 to 1939 when the ¿empty countryside¿ became a symbol of agricultural decline. Emerging radical and socialist narratives put forward approaches for rural regeneration and increased food production. Other narratives suggested that agricultural decline was one manifestation of national decline whereby a self sufficient and proud nation was being betrayed by Capitalism. Both Left and Right offered up the prospect of different solutions predicated upon shared perceptions of ¿Englishness.¿ The experience of Irish famine failed to inform political action or policy making. The study notes the importance of War upon the development of food policy. Increasingly, the State joined forces with the NFU in a corporate endeavour which sought to manage, rather than increase, food production and created structures which became increasingly important in the context of rearmament. Increased food production was rejected upon defence grounds in that free trade and a navy were seen as appropriate safeguards. Those countries which sought to follow self sufficiency ¿ or autarky ¿ are portrayed as warlike in their intentions; by 1939 all mainstream political parties rejected the notion of artificially increased food production. Those who continued to press for increased food production concentrated either upon earlier pre Capitalist societies or were attracted by Fascism and strong leadership. After such searches became increasingly problematic there was emphasis upon the soil, with the adoption of an approach which was both practical and mystical.

Barreto Dezar, Cesar Fernando January 2023 (has links)
The solid residues of the industries of hydrobiological products such as the heads of prawns, generate the possibility of obtaining by-products as flours that can be used as raw material for feeding animals since they have a high content of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, pigments, minerals, chitin, among others, which are attractive when formulating new food products. For the first objective that is the market study, the demand and supply of the product was investigated, in this way the unsatisfied demand of the market was calculated and thus the demand of the project was obtained. Regarding the second result that is the design of the plant, the necessary guidelines were established to achieve the level of production required, the evaluation and selection of the necessary engineering for the flour process from the shrimp heads. To finalize the third result, which is the economic-financial evaluation, the projected financial results (profit and loss statements, cash flows and balance sheets) were obtained with the help of indicators such as net annual value (NPV) And the Return Rate (IRR), with which it was possible to determine if the project is economically acceptable. In the case of this project, the NPV amounts to a positive amount which is S/ 3 418 734,36 and the TIR, which yielded 47 %, respectively.

Potentials, consequences and trade-offs of terrestrial carbon dioxide removal

Boysen, Lena 27 March 2017 (has links)
Global mean temperatures could change by 2◦C to 4.5◦C above pre-industrial levels until 2100 if mitigation enforcement of CO2 emissions fails. To counteract this projected global warming, climate engineering techniques aim at intendedly cooling Earth’s climate for example through terrestrial carbon dioxide removal (tCDR). Here, tCDR refers to the establishment of large-scale biomass plantations (BPs) in combination with the production of long-lasting carbon products such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage or biochar. This thesis examines the potentials and possible consequences of tCDR by analysing land-use scenarios with different spatial and temporal scales of BPs using an advanced biosphere model forced by varying climate projections. Synthesised, the potential of tCDR to permanently extract CO2 out of the atmosphere is found to be small, regardless of the emission scenario, the point of onset or the spatial extent. On the contrary, the aforementioned trade-offs and impacts are shown to be unfavourable in most cases. In a high emission scenario even unlimited area availability for tCDR could not reverse past emissions sufficiently. However, simultaneous emission reductions could result in strong carbon extractions reversing past emissions. In both cases, land transformation for tCDR leads to high “costs” for ecosystems and food production. Restricting the available land for BPs by these trade-off constraints leaves very small tCDR despite a near-future onset. Similarly, simulated tCDR potentials on dedicated BP areas defined in the RCP2.6 scenario stay below the aimed values using current management practices. Some potential may lie the reduction of carbon losses from field to end-products, new management options and the restoration of degraded soils with BPs. This thesis contradicts the assumption that tCDR could be an effective and environmentally friendly way of complementing or substituting strong and rapid mitigation efforts.

Prátricas alimentares de assentados rurais do Alto Xingu no contexto de mudança no uso da terra / Eating practices of rural settlers in the context of land use change in Upper Xingu

Grigol, Natália Salaro 12 April 2017 (has links)
Researches show that the inclusion of small farmers and rural settlers in large global agri-food chains can lead to changes in food patterns regarding production and consumption. As a result, studies show that there is greater dependency on the income to obtain food, which impacts food security of rural households regarding food access, food quality and maintenance of social reproduction and food culture. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the eating patterns of Upper Xingu rural settlers, the drivers for food choice and food acquisition and their relation to the land use change in the region. In this regard, an interdisciplinary approach was applied, together with the participant observation, unstructured interviews (Generative Methodology Posey data) and 24-hour dietary recall for food consumption. This research has achieved a number of different results. There are several variables hat compose the current context of socio-economic transformations: rural settlers aging and retirement; non-farm-income generating activities; women inclusion in labor market; the difficulties in accessing investment, technology and knowledge; water limitation; rural exodus; land valuation; the possibility of leasing; and the difficulty to diversify agricultural production besides cattle raising and soybean planting. Those socio-economic transformations are materialized in the landscape, by the land use change, and in the eating practices, by the decrease of food production for self-consumption. The maintenance of food production for self-consumption is more vulnerable for vegetables (especially greens), followed by cattle, milk production, cassava, pork, poultry and fruit (perennial crops). Foods that compose the diet of rural settlers have not changed over years, being characterized by rice, beans and beef. Although, eating practices have changed regarding the forms of getting food. As a result, the greater dependency on buying food can have impact on food security of families and influence the maintenance of future eating habits. Finally, this research concludes that the change in food access is the reflection - while it also reflects - a new way of life among rural settlers. Therefore, changes in the rural settlers\' way of life may endanger food security, at the same time that food insecurity may reinforce the changes in the local way of life.

After more than one and a half century of dangerous and sporadic contacts made with natives from Chaco, the Spanish Crown began, in the second half of the seventeenth century, an evangelizing project by the encouragement of evangelical missions in that region, in order to establish a peaceful approach with the various indigenous groups and to ensure a safe transit to the trade route between Buenos Aires harbor and Chilean Andean mines. Although this new colonizing approach has not resulted in a native pacification, the contact between them was intensified by the proliferation of Reductions in the region over the referred century, leading many missionaries and explorers to venture into the interior of Chaco, with the purpose of having a broader contact with the uncontacted groups. This opportunity has generated a series of impressions, criticism, ethnographic descriptions, official reports, agreements and negotiations, which had been documented throughout the eighteenth century, enabling an analysis not only of the Spanish speech concerning the contact, but also the posture, the understanding and the choices indians made regarding the contact with agents and colonial institutions. This thesis details, as a result of studies carried out in a variety of historical records produced by civil and religious observers, from a historiography on the contact between natives and Europeans in Chaco and from ethnographies produced about Chaco’s contemporary groups, that indians made their own decisions and took actions on the basis of a logic that was not spontaneous or case-by-case, neither the result of improvisation with the new situations posed by colonial advance. This logic is held in a complex mythological system which guided the indigenous way of thinking and perceptions, providing their own cosmology, unlike that of modern colonizers. To demonstrate this hypothesis, I analyze three indigenous socioeconomic features on a daily basis, whose practical backgrounds rely on the relationship with mythological elements and thus on the cosmological understanding that indians possessed about the world: the war, the trade and the economic system of production and food consumption.

Historical Urban Agriculture : Food Production and Access to Land in Swedish Towns before 1900

Björklund, Annika January 2010 (has links)
This doctoral thesis analyses the role of historical urban agriculture in a long-time perspective, through a combination of overarching surveys of Swedish towns and detailed studies of one town – Uppsala in east-central Sweden. The study shows how agricultural land – town land – of various sizes was donated to towns repeatedly during medieval times and in the 16th and 17th centuries. The study examines urban food production at three points in time, and concludes that grain production and, later, potato production as well was substantial in many towns, indicating high levels of urban self-sufficiency. This allows new perspectives concerning the interpretation of urban food provision, as urban dependency on countryside food production might have varied considerably between towns. In addition, the study shows how urban agriculture was connected to social welfare systems, in particular aiming at supporting urban widows. The results in this thesis provide an historical context to the increasing discussions about present-day urban agriculture globally, and identify a number of factors that may create or counteract opportunities for urban agriculture.

Sesame is a crop very adapted to the edaphoclimatic conditions of the Northeast, constituting as an excellent economic potential for this region, however, the seeds lose the viability quickly when manipulated and stored without the proper care, being necessary the use of techniques that preserve the quality of these seeds throughout the storage. The objective of this study was to determine the physical properties and the drying kinetics of this oil when subjected to temperatures of 30, 35, 40 and 45° C, applying different mathematical models to the observed data. thermodynamic properties during drying. Silage BRS sesame seeds were physically characterized as to their shape, size, volume, surface area, specific mass, circularity, sphericity and the mass of 1000 seeds. The seeds were dried in a fixed bed dryer at temperatures of 30, 35, 40 and 45°C. Experimental drying data of the thin layer sesame seeds were adjusted to the equations of Page, Henderson and Pabis, Lewis, Cavalcanti Mata, Thompson and Midilli. Based on the results obtained for the angle of repose of the sesame seeds, it can be stated that this cultivar presents an excellent flowability, favoring the processing of this product. With respect to the mass of one thousand seeds, it is verified that the evaluated cultivar satisfies to the standards demanded by the market. The best prediction to the drying kinetic process was obtained by Cavalcanti Mata model. Increasing drying air temperature promoted increased seed diffusivity and Gibbs free energy and reduced enthalpy and entropy values.
