Lavallard, Anne 02 July 2008 (has links) (PDF)

Shots, Everybody? : British Anti-smallpox Vaccination and the Development of Multifaceted Anti-vaccine Rhetoric on Internet Parenting Forums

Bean, Marta B 01 January 2014 (has links)
Vaccination is an important public health measure that can help reduce disease at the population level. Substantial evidence exists that vaccines are safe and effective at reducing the incidence of diseases like pertussis, measles and cervical cancer. However, on Internet parenting forums, parents discuss whether or not vaccination is the right choice for their children. In this thesis, I highlight the historical context of the anti-vaccine movement in mid 19th century to early 20th century Victorian Britain in the era of compulsory smallpox vaccination. Vaccination in this time was a very different and more overtly dangerous process, and preexisting dissenting movements took up anti-vaccination as a cause. Today, the rhetoric on Internet parenting forums has grown to include arguments of safety, efficacy and necessity of vaccination. I gathered much of the information from the mothering.com and mumsnet.com parenting forums, and other websites like Sanevax.org.

Legitimation of violence against women in Colombia: A feminist critical discourse analytic study

Laura Tolton Unknown Date (has links)
This study analyses the legitimation of violence against women in Colombia, using critical discourse analysis to explore attitudes related to violence, gender, and power. Internet forums from the website of the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo provide everyday examples of talk about two incidents of violence against women (VAW), a sexual assault and a wife-beating, both of which triggered a large scale reaction from the Colombian public. Colombia is a unique context to study the normalisation of VAW. This nation has been characterised by high levels of violence over the last sixty years, suffering through evolving stages of armed conflict. Militarisation has been shown to increase the occurrence of VAW (Kelly, 2000), and the normalisation of VAW may intensify as well in militarily violent contexts (Hume, 2004; McWilliams, 1998). Critical discourse analysis offers theory and methodology to examine an aspect of life in terms of social justice and power (Fairclough, 2003; Resende, 2009), denaturalising the discursive practices which help to produce and reproduce power relations between social groups (Fairclough & Wodak, 1997; van Dijk, 1993). This study examines legitimation, a social action realised in discourse, which has the goal of setting and reinforcing a certain social order. The project also explores how legitimation in these forums is tied to Colombian culture and the topic of VAW. Drawing on the methods of van Dijk (1988, 1998, 2001) ,Wood and Kroger (2000), and grounded theory (Corbin & Strauss, 2008), multiple readings of the forums elicited salient themes as well as discursive strategies used to carry out legitimation of VAW. These were analysed in terms of underlying social beliefs prevailing in Colombian society. Dominant themes emerging from analysis of the sexual assault forums include: ‘“real” violence is more important’; ‘this incident was not a big deal’; ‘it’s her fault anyway’; and ‘she should have appreciated it’. These manifest the dominant strategies and structures of contrasts, minimisation, victim blaming, and romanticisation/sexualisation, respectively. Analysis of the wife-beating forums reveals the following themes: ‘this is not related to me’; ‘wife-beating is a private issue’; ‘domestic violence is normal and even important’; ‘it is the victim’s responsibility to change’; and ‘the victim deserves this violence’. Dominant strategies included respectively: distancing explanations and solutions, discourses of privacy, normalising violence, focusing on the victim, and victim blaming. The forum analyses illustrate how legitimation relates to Colombian culture and the topic of VAW. Numerous elements of culture and topic are used to criticise women’s agency and suggest that women ought to be passive and silent. In one culture-related example, the Colombian reiteration of violent events works to silence women’s stories about their experiences of VAW. Another strong element of culture is found in Colombian sayings and proverbs presenting a common knowledge discourse normalising VAW as romantic, sexual and necessary. Discourses used more universally to justify VAW include the idea that women belong in the private sphere and the psychopathologisation of women as attention-seeking and slutty. These elements work together to suggest that women are strong, sexual, and dangerous, needing violence from an authority to keep them uncomplaining and submissive. This work can inform future studies about discourse concerning VAW in Hispanic contexts, sketching in a little-studied disciplinary intersection. As this research participates in the aims of feminist critical discourse analysis, it is hoped that the present study will also be used for critical campaigns aimed at media specialists and educators so that they may create greater awareness and promote change, pointing out and discouraging these discourses legitimating violence against women in Colombia.

Improving effectiveness of dialogue in learning communities : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Ph. D. in Information Systems at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Yang, Jingyu January 2009 (has links)
In a learning community, conventional discussion forums are integral to webbased interventions in traditional classrooms as well as on-line learning environments. Despite popular belief that they are a great success in fostering deep and meaningful discussions and support active learning; research has found that there are millions of messages posted by users to express such an opinion, but it is hard to be directly delivered to all users. Finally there are millions of postings in databases across the country stored away and never reused. This thesis introduces a PhD student’s current research work. It proposes a distributed intelligent discussion forum system dedicated to supporting both students and teachers. The system is developed with the primary goal of reducing the number of problems associated with conventional discussion forum systems in web-based environments and improving the effectiveness of dialogue between students with each other and with teachers so that it can enhance each individual student’s ability to share and learn knowledge.

The selection of criteria for the information analysis during the participation evaluation process, in discussion forums of distance courses, is a major challenge. There are many variables to consider in this process, in addition to the subjectivity inherent in the analysis carried out by the instructor, which is subject to human error. Instructors, generally, do not have at their disposal all the resources necessary, thus, the use of methodologies or tools that can help them with this process are necessary. Facing this demand, and after performing a study of the major qualitative/quantitative indicators used by distance education teachers, we developed a framework for the analysis of the student participation in the forums. The aim of this framework is to support the decision-making process, by providing a more effective mechanism to measure the quantity and quality of interactions, capable of adjusting itself to the traditional methodology adopted by each teacher. The validation of this framework was performed by the administration of questionnaires that surveyed the opinion of active teachers in the distance learning area, and by the execution of case studies involving the assessment of the accuracy of instances of this framework for calculating the participation grade of students. The study involved the development of an Expert System, for the treatment and processing of the data, using similarity functions to perform, semi-automatically, the assessment of the content of the students' messages. Thus, it was possible to confront the calculated participation grades with the grades assigned by the teacher using the traditional approach. The results showed that, in three out of the five classes observed, it was not possible to verify the existence of statistically significant differences between the performance of both the approaches studied. A study of the accuracy and correlation shows that, in all the cases analyzed, there is a strong relationship between the data, and the average error was less than 3%, demonstrating the applicability of the proposed framework to the assessment of student participation in forums.

Teaching practices in online education : tutoring Program of Continuing Formation in Media in Education.

Oliveira, Carmen Lúcia de Araújo Paiva 31 October 2009 (has links)
Among the teachers functions in online education, the tutoring plays an important role. The tutor establishes the closest relations with the student, mediating the pedagogical actions which are developed in the online course, with in order to achieve the principles of autonomy and learning, contributing to the creation of collaborative learning spaces, permeated by the interactivity and affection. This research focuses on the role of tutors in the Continued Training Programme for Educational Media searching for the improvement in the practice of tutoring since the studies of practice and the individuals who practice them can contribute to understanding and better structuring of this expanding area. This study aimed to verify the contribution of tutors to promote interactivity and building emotional bonds through the forum interface, as constitutive elements of learning communities in the basic cycle of the Media in Education Programme, in its first offer in Alagoas. The methodology used was case study, and data collecting involved multiple sources of evidence such as questionnaires, interviews and consultations. In the research achieved revise of literature, procedures for data collection, tabulation and analysis of data collected. The results showed that the performance of the tutors was very positive, but there are aspects that need improvement in order to have a truly interactive feature of a learning community, and reach the goal of collaborative learning in online education.

The overall objective was to investigate "if" and "how" the Internet's potential for human interaction was used by the candidates and coalitions in recent presidential campaigns in the Southern Cone and "if" and "how far" the interactive tools on websites electoral were used to strengthen ties with the electorate during political campaigns and increase the quality of democratic processes. In this thesis we seek to allow two levels of analysis: the formal structure of the website and political action that it develops. We analyze the logic of the candidates' campaign coordination in the use of discussion forums for government proposals, the constraints and incentives to encourage participation of ordinary citizens and the level of control exercised, and on the other hand, the way they interacted with Internet campaigns, with candidates and each other from these tools, the form and content of discursive exchanges held there and the nature of the proposals that resulted from this interaction. We start from the assumption that the availability of online discussion forums create an opportunity structure that can increase the possibility of political action of ordinary citizens to communicate their preferences, perform inputs, participate in the construction of political projects, as well as compel the candidates to conceive with more clearly their political platforms. However, the type of product is the result of the design of the interface and how the Internet and using the candidate technology, rather than a pre-determined by it, ie, depends on how the rules are articulated objective, strategies election, the political interest and the ability of the actors involved. We tested six corollaries specific empirical contexts and concrete objects of our investigation were the platforms for discussion and collaborative construction of government programs of four presidential candidates from Argentina, Chile and Brazil during the 2007 elections, 2009 and 2010, respectively, and the corpus of empiricalresearch in 2727 totaled posts analyzed. For purposes of this study, we performed a composition techniques that resulted in a specific methodological apparatus, including observation of interactions mediated by the computer, data collection and content analysis. The model consists of a first effort to develop a methodological research strategy discussion forums established in the electoral environment of websites. The evaluation of the quality of the discussions was undertaken according to eight dimensions of analysis based on methodological parameters DQI - Discourse Quality Index (Constraints and incentives for participation, inclusiveness and diversity, reciprocity debate, mutual respect, Identification, Degree of heterogeneity, thematization and effectiveness of content and interactive interface), which were operationalized into indicators, qualitative and quantitative.

It highlights the main demands in the EJA significant debate spaces, with the focus on those made in Amazonas. It also brings the specific issues of policies of organization and supply of adult education and procedure of movements, according to the subjects’ perspectives. The theoretical and methodological foundations sustain the views and settings of adult education. The research used the dialectical method and adopted a qualitative approach, based on documental analysis and semi-structured interviews. The methodological procedures favored the following documents: the education legislation, programs, projects, reports and events schedules. In the interviews, we selected course coordinators, managers of adult education centers and representatives of SEDUC/AM sectors. The research results corroborate the absence of significant investment in youth and adult education, especially in the mechanisms that ensure the right to education, setting up a limited expansion of courses offering, mainly for the high school demand, composed mostly by young and adult working people, preventing the access of this population to schooling. In the process of assurance to the right to adult education, some highlights are the actions of movements in defense of EJA consolidation as a public policy of the State, based on popular education in a perspective of human emancipation. The research results allow a reflection on the policies for youth and adult education in Amazonas.
