Framing for Change : Effects of Message Framing on Attitudes Towards Personal- and Societal Climate Change Mitigation Efforts

Widlund, Johannes January 2016 (has links)
This study has made use of an experimental method to investigate if and how exposure to an integrated 'socioeconomic- and climate justice' framing, and a 'catastrophe' framing, alter Swedish post highschool students attitudes towards climate change mitigation efforts, both on a personal- and societal level. The experiment was conducted through 287 surveys where equal shares of the respondents were given different stimuli through a short text at the beginning of the surveys. Results indicate that contrary to the hypotheses, exposure to the 'catastrophe' frame had a larger and more positive effect on especially attitudes towards personal climate change mitigation efforts, but also to some extent on societal efforts, than did exposure to a 'justice' framing. This is possibly due to the salience of catastrophe framings in the Swedish public discourse, and /or the integrated approach the educational system has taken on the subject of sustainable development.

COP21 - en milstolpe för världen? : En statsvetenskaplig framinganalys av klimatavtalet i Paris.

Klum Stelander, Jonatan January 2016 (has links)
After many years of climate negotiations, a universally binding agreement has become the main objective for many scientists and politicians in the field of international climate negotiations. The highly anticipated climate conference in Paris 2015 has been portrayed as a success by politicians, newspapers and international organisations worldwide. It seems reasonable to assume that the binding part of the agreement is one of the reasons to its perceived significance given the fact that a binding agreement, historically, has been difficult to achieve. Although the agreement has been celebrated and praised by several influential organisations such as the UN, this perspective has not been uncontradicted. Organisations such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth challenge the assumption that this is a milestone for humanity. This thesis seeks to explore this disagreement with a framing analysis. It is possible to identify two separate frames combatting for their beliefs to become perceived as the truth. The ”Successframe” is illustrated by the Swedish government. The successframe is challenged by the environmental organisations in what can be referred to as a counterframe, in this essay the counterframe is called the ”failureframe”. This thesis uses a theoretical framework inspired by Benford and Snow (2000), to explore why the successframe has become the dominating frame in the public discourse when discussing the Paris agreement.

Media Perceptions on Sexual Assault on College Campuses

Hall, Maggie M. 25 March 2016 (has links)
For the period of 1995-2013, females ages 18 to 24 had the highest rate of rape and sexual assault victimizations compared to females in all other age groups (Lynn & Sinozich, 2014). There is an even wider problem when among student victims, 20 percent of rape and sexual assault victimizations were reported to police, compared to 32% reported among nonstudent victims ages 18 to 24 (Lynn & Sinozich, 2014). With staggering statistics on sexual assaults, it is clear that this has become a national issue, which has further developed onto college campuses nationwide. In the last decade, sexual assault has gotten more attention in the news than ever before. This study aims to understand the relationship between how the media frames sexual assault and what type of perceptions students have developed because of it. Framing theory will be used to identify if and how the media frames sexual assault and how students react or behave from what they have gathered from the media. This study also aims to look at the broader implications of framing regarding sexual assault, more specifically the framing of the victim, the framing of sexual assault in general, and the framing of preventative efforts and programs. Qualitative focus groups were conducted on the University of South Florida’s campus to gain rich data to fully understand student’s perceptions. It was found that four themes emerged from the focus group that included moderate awareness of the programs, lack of support from the university, confusion about available resources, and the media has influenced students view on sexual assault. The conclusion and future recommendations all steam from the results and what was learned about campus culture.

An exploratory mixed methods analysis of the media framing of crisis stakeholder salience : the case of Singapore Airlines SQ006

Lim, Kim Yang January 2017 (has links)
Crises disrupt an organisation’s operations and harm its stakeholders. How an organisation-in-crisis is perceived to respond to the needs of affected stakeholders may significantly affect the firm’s recovery and future viability. Stakeholders and observers acquire much of their information about a crisis from news media coverage. This study accepts the principle that media framing can influence audience’s perceptions of reported stories. The research explores how three news media sources in Taiwan and Singapore framed the salience of stakeholders affected by the October 2000 crash in Taipei of Singapore Airlines’ flight SQ006. The study introduces a conceptual framework of crisis stakeholder salience drawn from stakeholder theory, crisis communication and media framing of crises and disasters. Using a mixed methods content analysis approach, the framework is applied to investigate the news media framing of SQ006 stakeholders in the sampled media texts. The findings show that the SQ006 crisis stakeholders were framed as salient through more dimensions than the three attributes of power, legitimacy and urgency recognised in a seminal stakeholder theory model of stakeholder salience. The findings have implications for further research and applications for crisis management practice, which are discussed.

Drugs in the News: What Do the Afghan News Media Say About Illicit Drugs?

Mahmood, Sultan January 2013 (has links)
Globally, research has shown that media coverage of illicit drug issues can play an important role in influencing public opinion and shaping drug policies. However, in Afghanistan, the world’s largest opium producer, very little is known about the media coverage of illicit drug issues. Afghan media, especially radio and television have developed dramatically during the past 11 years. Using the theories of agenda setting and framing, this study explored what drug-related topics were covered in the Afghan news media; how were these topics covered; how were the health and social consequences of drug abuse depicted in the media; and how much time was devoted to drug related topics in the media. Employing content analysis, the study examined primetime news coverage of the two leading media outlets: Azadi Radio and Tolo Television from 1st March 2011 until 31st July 2011. This thesis found the following types of imbalances in Afghan media reporting on illicit drug issues: 1) media reports on drug issues were heavily focused on supply reduction issues (81%) while paying considerably less attention to drug demand reduction issues (19%); 2) media predominantly framed illicit drugs as a law enforcement issue (83%) with only 15% of the paragraphs in the sample framing illicit drug as a public health problem; 3) media reporting on illicit drugs heavily relied on official sources (79%) lacking voices of the public health practitioners and drug addicts; 4) media coverage of illicit drug issues was heavily centered in Kabul (56%) with considerably less reporting from southern Afghanistan, which is the largest opium producing region. This study, which is presumably the first of its kind, provides media organizations, policy makers, and public health officials with a broad picture on the drug-related information available to the public on the leading Afghan news outlets. In addition, it serves as a basis for future research on media coverage of illicit drug issues in Afghanistan.

"No Human Being is Illegal": Comparing Framing Strategies in the Immigrant Rights Movement

Freitas, Savannah January 2020 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Will Attwood-Charles / Immigration policy has undoubtedly taken a forefront spot in the national dialogue in our contemporary political moment. However, there is considerable disagreement among and within political parties about how to address this issue. This paper seeks to better understand the priorities of immigrant rights activists in the U.S. by executing case studies on 11 immigrant rights organizations. I explore which framing strategies each group uses to push for its goals and theorize about how these social movement organizations (SMOs) arrive at the strategic frames that they do. Through discourse analysis and coding of interviews, websites, and other media sources, I conclude that the most relevant factors in determining what frame a group arrives at are its external resource environment and how professionalized the organization is. There is additional evidence to suggest that the political opportunity structure, salience of a previously successful ‘master frame,’ and the age of leaders also affect framing processes. Finally, my data does not suggest that being immigrant-led versus led by non-immigrant ‘allies’ directly affects an SMOs’ framing strategies, but it does affect the external resource environment from which it is able to draw. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2020. / Submitted to: Boston College. En skandalös händelse : En fallstudie i Aftonbladets rapportering kring Benny Fredriksson

Werme, Emelie January 2020 (has links)
