Core excitation in the structure and breakup of heavy beryllium isotopes

Tarutina, Tatiana January 2001 (has links)
The 14Be nucleus is a good candidate for having a halo structure. When a three- body model is used to calculate the properties of this nucleus, it relies on a knowledge of the potentials involved and hence on the structure of the underlying two-body subsystem 13Be. Previuosly published calculations showed that, in order to describe 13Be and 14Be simultaneously, 13Be had to be either bound, or have a p-shell ground state, which is not consistent with the experimental data. In this thesis 13Be and 14Be are described as one or two neutrons outside a deformed 12Be core. The idea of the method is that deformation of the core couples the neutron motion with core excitations. The core is treated as a rigid rotor here, and for the neutron-core interaction we used a deformed Woods-Saxon potential. We explore the potential parameters compatible with the known properties of 12Be, 13Be and 14Be. The three-body model for 14Be used a hyperspherical expansion including core degrees of freedom. Compared to the previous works, we find that both 14Be and 13Be are described simultaneously if the 12Be core has large positive quadrupole deformation. The resulting three-body model wave function was used in calculations of reaction observables. The reaction cross section of 14Be on a carbon target at 850 MeV/A was calculated in a four-body Glauber model, after the formalism was extended to include core degrees of freedom. The calculated reaction cross section agrees with the experiment. One-neutron knockout reactions of the Borromean nuclei 6He, 11Li and 14Be are discussed. The integrated cross sections for stripping and diffraction processes are calculated in the four-body Glauber model including core excited components in the wave function for 14Be. The neutron-core relative energy distributions within 5He, 10Li and 13Be following one-neutron removal, are calculated by a spectator model in the eikonal limit. The integrated cross sections and energy distributions for 6He are in agreement with the experiment. The results for 11Li and 14Be breakup demonstrated that the further investigation of the reaction model is needed.

Latin American Countercultures and the Third World: Internationalism, Geographic Imagination and Experimental Practices (1968-1980)

Bauler Pereira, Iuri January 2023 (has links)
This dissertation examines how Latin American intellectuals and artists identified with the 1960s and 1970s counterculture engaged with the idea of the "Third World", and incorporated elements usually identified with Africa, Asia and Latin America to their experimental practices in writing, performance and film. Drawing from an archive of experimental films, underground publications, alternative books, independent documentaries in 16mm and Super8, festival and conference documents, personal letters, travel diaries and notebooks, this dissertation analyzes how cultures and ideas from the Third World were depicted, reimagined and experienced by important Latin American countercultural figures from Brazil and Argentina: Miguel Grinberg, Glauber Rocha and a group of filmmakers and artists that visited Afro-Brazilian religious sites alongside the U.S. American group Living Theater in the 1970s. The dissertation examines the engagement of these countercultural intellectuals with three specific transnational political projects in circulation during the Cold War – Inter-American, Tricontinental, and Afro-Asian– as instances of geographic imagination. The dissertation concludes that, in doing so, these Latin American countercultural intellectuals put forth an alternative internationalist vision for Latin America and the Third World, articulating a worldview that went beyond the political frames of the Cold War and the traditional forms of Latin American nationalism.

At the same time that brought an almost unlimited ability to intervene in the movies, the digital tools have also introduced a debate about the ethical nature involving the restoration of films. In this context, we highlight the restoration projects dedicated to the films of Cinema Novo. This work aims to verify to what extent the digital restoration has to affect the language elements of Glauber Rocha’s Terra em Transe, a film marked by great formal inventiveness. The analysis of the restoration of the film was marked by some of the concepts of Cesare Brandi, an author who sought to work with the issue of ethics in the fine arts field. Some issues related to ethics and to the concept of restoration as well as the historical trajectory of film restoration in Brazil are also discussed in the text. / The aim of this work is to analyze the cultural nationalism in Brazil and its reflection in three major productions of filmmaker Glauber Rocha in the 1960s: Black God, White Devil (1964), Entranced Earth (1967) and Antônio das Mortes (1969). We analyze how the music raises points of intersection between nationalism derived from the modern art week 1922 and the concept of conservative modernization. The musical language is used as a prime tool of analysis in relation to time perception and the modal and tonal languages, as well as in pairs, rural and urban, modern and archaic, classical and popular. In another key, nationalism present in these films also reflects the thinking of Mário de Andrade on popular culture and the role of the intellectual in relation to this culture, incorporated by Glauber and questioned in these three films.

Landscaping Wilderness in Hollywood Westerns and Brazilian Nordesterns

Ashman, Michael 09 August 2022 (has links)
In this comparative examination of cinematic representations of American and Brazilian wildernesses, I argue for the necessity of a transnational, postregional, and ecocritical approach to film studies. The way that the deserts of the American West are represented by Hollywood Western filmmakers reveal underlying ecological and political philosophies, and provide a productive contrast with representations of the sertão, a similarly arid biome in Brazil. Among other theoretical approaches, this study uses W. J. T. Mitchell’s idea of “landscape” as a verb to examine the formal devices by which filmmakers and audiences “landscape” these “wildernesses.” Using John Ford’s The Searchers (1956) as an example, I suggest that Hollywood Westerns inscribe the land with a colonial gaze that reflects and perpetuates a dualistic conception of nature, one that sees nature as separate and distinct from humankind. Cinema Novo, the radical anticolonial movement in Brazilian cinema, provides an aesthetic and philosophical alternative. Through an analysis of one of Cinema Novo’s foundational works by one of its founding figures—Glauber Rocha’s Deus e o diabo na terra do sol [Black God, White Devil] (1964)—I demonstrate how the theory and practice of Rocha’s anticolonial “aesthetic of hunger” has an ecological dimension, one that rejects and collapses a binary opposition between humans and nature. By looking beyond borders which too often function not only as national boundaries but to delimit fields of academic study, this project finds common ground for comparison in representations of nature, and demonstrates the political and ecological implications thereof.

[en] IN SEARCH OF THE THIRD SHORE: TRACES OF THE SERTÃO IN THE BRAZILIAN SYMBOLIC PRODUCTION FROM MODERNITY TO CONTEMPORANEITY / [pt] À PROCURA DA TERCEIRA MARGEM: RASTROS DO SERTÃO NA PRODUÇÃO SIMBÓLICA BRASILEIRA DA MODERNIDADE À CONTEMPORANEIDADE

CINTIA BORGES ALMEIDA DA FONSECA 02 July 2024 (has links)
Terceira margem. / [en] With shifting borders, the sertão (backlands) seems to adjust to the imaginary plasticity of its time, staging aesthetic, ethical and political disputes in its territory that demarcate it, forging new and ever-fluid borders for the region. This work proposes a critical journey through the symbolic cartography of the sertão, from modernity to contemporaneity, following the path proposed by some writers and a filmmaker who have forged images of the region. The analysis is based on the efforts made by artists who, at different times and in different ways, dared to bring landscape and language together to establish - or purposely blur - an outline and a contour for the sertão. The research begins with the remains of a monumental sertão, woven and torn apart by Euclides da Cunha and Guimarães Rosa. The proposal is to analyze the residues of the writing of Os sertões - or what was lost between notes from marginal texts and an excess of theoretical references - to arrive at the marginalia produced by Guimarães Rosa while reading Euclides greatest work and the travel notes collected by the Minas Gerais author for the writing of Grande sertão: veredas. Read in dialogue, Euclides da Cunha could be the literate traveler to whom Guimarães Rosa s protagonist narrates what was submerged by the republican project of historical silencing, making silence, the unstable and the indomitable heard, in a radical reflection on the limits of thought and language. Pulling on the thread of a sertão made of letters, we investigate authors who have turned this strange interior inside out, foreign to the rest of the country, moving it to the margins of big cities and miserable existences; who strive to circumscribe the emptiness by demarcating it with words, while revealing the structural condition of lack and the impossibility of writing. Clarice Lispector (A hora da estrela), Marilene Felinto (As mulheres de Tijucopapo) and Carolina Maria de Jesus (Quarto de despejo) narrate the marks left by a sertão that arrived on the edge of cities, invaded alleys, rooms and shacks on the outskirts of metropolises, tattooing the bodies and destinies of the heirs of a diaspora. Contradictorily, the same landscape that calls for the demarcation of borders is also an invitation to go beyond, capable of calling into question the delimitation of its margins. In this sense, the Portuguese-Angolan Ruy Duarte de Carvalho (Desmedida - Luanda - São Paulo - São Francisco e volta) and the filmmaker Glauber Rocha (Deus e o diabo na terra do sol) set out to explore a beyond that escapes between the lines, cartographic or symbolic; a space that carries the dimension of the unreachable, an impulse to movement and crossing. Readers of Guimarães Rosa and Euclides da Cunha, both put themselves on the scene, suturing body and language, to produce border - or coastal - works that mark the encounter between hybrid and heterogeneous fields, preserving their singularities. Third margin.

Electromagnetic processes in few-body systems

Rampho, Gaotsiwe Joel 11 1900 (has links)
Electromagnetic processes induced by electron scattering off few-nucleon systems are theoretically investigated in the non-relativistic formalism. Non-relativistic one-body nuclear current operators are used with a parametrization of nucleon electromagnetic form factors based on recent experimental nucleon scattering data. Electromagnetic form factors of three-nucleon and four-nucleon systems are calculated from elastic electron-nucleus scattering information. Nuclear response functions used in the determination of differential cross sections for inclusive and exclusive quasi-elastic electron-nucleon scattering from the 4He nucleus are also calculated. Final-state interactions in the quasi-elastic nucleon knockout process are explicitly taken into account using the Glauber approximation. The sensitivity of the response functions to the final-state interactions is investigated. The Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics approach with angular momentum and parity projection is employed to construct ground state wave functions for the nuclei. A reduced form of the realistic Argonne V18 nucleon-nucleon potential is used to describe nuclear Hamiltonian. A convenient numerical technique of approximating expectation values of nuclear Hamiltonian operators is employed. The constructed wave functions are used to calculate ground-state energies, root-mean-square radii and magnetic dipole moments of selected light nuclei. The theoretical predictions of the nuclear properties for the selected nuclei give a satisfactory description of experimental values. The Glauber approximation is combined with the Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics to generate wave functions for scattering states in quasi-elastic scattering processes. The wave functions are then used to study proton knockout reactions in the 4He nucleus. The theoretical predictions of the model reproduce experimental observation quite well. / Physics / Ph D.
