Topics in spatial and dynamical phase transitions of interacting particle systems

In this work we provide several improvements in the study of phase transitions of interacting particle systems: - We determine a quantitative relation between non-extremality of the limiting Gibbs measure of a tree-based spin system, and the temporal mixing of the Glauber Dynamics over its finite projections. We define the concept of 'sensitivity' of a reconstruction scheme to establish such a relation. In particular, we focus on the independent sets model, determining a phase transition for the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics at the same location of the extremality threshold of the simple invariant Gibbs version of the model. - We develop the technical analysis of the so-called spatial mixing conditions for interacting particle systems to account for the connectivity structure of the underlying graph. This analysis leads to improvements regarding the location of the uniqueness/non-uniqueness phase transition for the independent sets model over amenable graphs; among them, the elusive hard-square model in lattice statistics, which has received attention since Baxter's solution of the analogous hard-hexagon in 1980. - We build on the work of Montanari and Gerschenfeld to determine the existence of correlations for the coloring model in sparse random graphs. In particular, we prove that correlations exist above the 'clustering' threshold of such a model; thus providing further evidence for the conjectural algorithmic 'hardness' occurring at such a point.

Electromagnetic processes in few-body systems

Electromagnetic processes induced by electron scattering off few-nucleon systems are theoretically investigated in the non-relativistic formalism. Non-relativistic one-body nuclear current operators are used with a parametrization of nucleon electromagnetic form factors based on recent experimental nucleon scattering data. Electromagnetic form factors of three-nucleon and four-nucleon systems are calculated from elastic electron-nucleus scattering information. Nuclear response functions used in the determination of differential cross sections for inclusive and exclusive quasi-elastic electron-nucleon scattering from the 4He nucleus are also calculated. Final-state interactions in the quasi-elastic nucleon knockout process are explicitly taken into account using the Glauber approximation. The sensitivity of the response functions to the final-state interactions is investigated. The Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics approach with angular momentum and parity projection is employed to construct ground state wave functions for the nuclei. A reduced form of the realistic Argonne V18 nucleon-nucleon potential is used to describe nuclear Hamiltonian. A convenient numerical technique of approximating expectation values of nuclear Hamiltonian operators is employed. The constructed wave functions are used to calculate ground-state energies, root-mean-square radii and magnetic dipole moments of selected light nuclei. The theoretical predictions of the nuclear properties for the selected nuclei give a satisfactory description of experimental values. The Glauber approximation is combined with the Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics to generate wave functions for scattering states in quasi-elastic scattering processes. The wave functions are then used to study proton knockout reactions in the 4He nucleus. The theoretical predictions of the model reproduce experimental observation quite well. / Physics / Ph D. Study, understand and discuss the relationships and possible dialogue between the films O Cangaceiro of Lima Barreto, Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol and O Dragão da Maldade contra o Santo Guerreiro both of Glauber Rocha. The development of our analysis is the convergence of gender and aesthetics adopted by the directors, even though the first makes clear the choice of the western states and the second to build a Brazilian aesthetic, the aesthetic of hunger. So, we do the opposite movement of the authors who point to the ranking of Brazilian cinema, electing the Cinema Novo as the benchmark for quality and innovation aesthetic-ideological. / Debruçar na relação História e Cinema a fim de entender a construção da narrativa histórica acerca do cinema brasileiro. Estudar, compreender e problematizar as relações e possíveis diálogos entre os filmes O Cangaceiro de Lima Barreto, Deus e o diabo na terra do Sol e O dragão da maldade contra do santo guerreiro de Glauber Rocha. O desenvolvimento de nossa análise parte das convergências de gênero e da estética adotada pelos diretores, ainda que o primeiro deixe claro a escolha do western e o segundo afirme a construção de uma estética brasileira, a estética da fome. Assim, fazemos o movimento contrário dos autores que corroboram com a hierarquização do cinema brasileiro, elegendo o Cinema Novo como o referencial de qualidade e inovação estético-ideológica. / Mestre em História

Les objectifs de cette thèse sont de mettre à jour, d\'analyser et de critiquer la conception du cinéma révolutionnaire qui a été portée par le Cinema Novo et s\'est fondée sur le concept de « conscientisation » tel qu\'il a été formulé par les sciences sociales brésiliennes dans les années cinquante. Le Cinema Novo, que nous définirons comme un groupe de cinéastes, soutient une production suivie dans le Brésil des années soixante et se présente comme un cinéma humaniste, ayant pour but la prise de conscience par la population brésilienne des mécanismes sociaux, culturels, économiques et politiques qui expliquent le sous-développement, afin qu\'elle se révolte et fasse la révolution. Glauber Rocha fut la figure de proue de ce cinéma qui ne se résume pas à lui et qui a beaucoup évolué au cours de ses dix ans d\'existence. Nous le verrons en étudiant, entre autres : Sécheresse (Vidas secas) de Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Les Fusils (Os Fuzis) de Ruy Guerra, Le Dieu noir et le diable blond (Deus e o diabo na terra do sol), Terre en transe (Terra em transe) et Antonio-das-Mortes (O Dragão da maldade contra o santo guerreiro) de Glauber Rocha. Notre approche s\'insère dans le champ cinéma-histoire et applique à un nouvel objet d\'étude les méthodes développées sur d\'autres sujets par Michel Marie, Jean-Pierre Esquenazi ou encore Jean-Pierre Bertin-Maghit. Nous verrons ici comment, assimilant cinéma d\'auteur et cinéma révolutionnaire, le Cinema Novo a évité les schémas classiques et manipulateurs d\'un cinéma de propagande sans pour autant établir avec le grand public une relation suivie et devenir ce cinéma populaire de conscientisation idéalisé à ses débuts. / A tese apresentada pretende revelar, analisar e criticar a concepção do cinema revolucionário defendida pelo Cinema Novo fundada no conceito de conscientização formulada pelas ciências sociais brasileiras nos anos cinqüenta. O Cinema Novo, definido aqui como um grupo de cineastas, produz um volume conseqüente de filmes durante os anos sessenta. Ele se apresenta como um cinema humanista que tem por objetivo provocar a compreensão, pela população brasileira, dos mecanismos sociais, culturais, políticos e econômicos que explicam o subdesenvolvimento, para que esta se revolte e faça a revolução. Glauber Rocha foi o líder incontestável deste cinema que no entanto não se restringe a ele e que muito evoluiu durante seus dez anos de existência como veremos estudando entre outros : Vidas secas de Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Os Fuzis de Ruy Guerra, Deus e o diabo na terra do sol, Terra em transe e O Dragão da maldade contra o santo guerreiro de Glauber Rocha. Nossa perspectiva se insere no campo de estudo das relações entre cinema e história e aplica a um novo objeto métodos anteriormente desenvolvidos por Michel Marie, Jean-Pierre Esquenazi e Jean-Pierre Bertin-Maghit. Nós veremos como, a partir da assimilação entre cinema de autor e cinema revolucionário, o Cinema Novo conseguiu evitar os esquemas clássicos do cinema de propaganda sem no entanto estabelecer com o público uma relação estável, nem se tornar esse cinema popular de conscientização idealizado no início dos anos sessenta.
