In this work I tried to reflect on how the representation of FEB and Brazilian former combatants at the contemporary documentary cinema was in the years of 1990 and 2000, understanding the relationship of those films with the recollection of FEB and the participation of Brazil in the Second World War. During the 60 after-war years, the past of these former combatants has been submitted to four connections which encountered, somehow or other, success at the cinema: the “framed” memory of 1944/45; the “lent” memory of 1960/70; the “attacked” memory of 1980/90 and the memory “in combat” of 2000. At the end of the war, an image of an victorious FEB and of national heroes was fabricated, electing the conquest of Monte Castelo (Mount Castle) as the main deed of the Brazilian soldier at the “Italian Campaign”. The European winter and the four badly-succeeded attacks to the Appennines transformed Monte Castelo into the biggest myth of the Brazilian participation in the world conflict. However, the years after the return of FEB to Brazil were followed by a total negligence from the State and the civil society by the war experiences of those men and women who, even in Italy, had already been demobilized. It was in the years of 1960/70 which the memory of the former combatants assumed a new connotation, borrowed by the militaries in the power. The “Italian Campaign” started being the horizon at which the civil society and the militaries should look when it comes to a new fight which was being formed at the national and international political scenario of such time: the fight against the Communism was the continuation of FEB’s fight in Italy against the nazi-fascism. However, this feeling/resentment of anti-communism, which started in 1935 with the Communist Intentona and which was being articulated and updated by the militaries along the years, provoked a counter-feeling of ... The view from The Waste Land : how Modernist poetry in England survived the Great WarFletcher, Martin John January 2016 (has links)
T. S. Eliot’s iconic poem The Waste Land, published in 1922, is indisputably the key Modernist poetry text in English. Eliot was living in London at the time of its composition, and although the poem contains numerous literary references, The Waste Land is not thought to have been influenced by the poetry of Eliot’s English contemporaries. On the contrary, the poem is regarded as a radical departure from, and reaction against, the English poetry being written before and throughout the Great War (1914-1918). In this paper, I argue that The Waste Land contains echoes of the work of English poets Harold Monro and Herbert Read, both of whom knew Eliot well. Looking back retrospectively from 1922, with The Waste Land as my exemplary Modernist text and critical starting point, I carry out a reassessment of the English poetry scene from 1910 to 1922, from the pre-war Georgians to the post-war appearance of Eliot’s masterpiece. Both Monro and Read were influenced by Ezra Pound’s radical ‘Imagism’ movement, which formed a central plank in the progressive London poetry scene in the years leading up to the war. I therefore employ both The Waste Land and Pound’s ‘Imagist’ experiments as models of Modernist practice by which to compare and contrast the work of the Georgians (particularly Wilfrid Gibson), the poetry produced during the Great War, and the work of Monro and Read. The guiding principles of my analytical approach are twofold: firstly, in terms of poetic practice, I evaluate the work of Eliot and his contemporaries by comparing their approaches to form, assessing how poetic technique both defines content and offers insight into shifts in cultural values; secondly, my theoretical approach is based on changing concepts of the aesthetic function of poetry, revealing how aesthetic values are historically relative to, and determine, the production and reception of poetry, ultimately exposing how Eliot and Pound’s Modernist experiments are historically related to Romantic aesthetic principles.

Previous issue date: 2005-09-13 / The subject that motivated this study is the social matter in Brazil when the ruling system in power was the regime known as the New State Estado Novo . For better understanding of this problem it becomes essential to recollect the historical evolution of this period from the end of the 1920s until the end of the New State, in 1945, which it is the period considered for this study. The laboring claims for better conditions of work, better wages and, therefore, for better conditions of life retrace the 1930 s, when the workers were treated, simply, as "a police matter". The concern towards the social issue started to move over after 1930 when Getúlio Vargas was made the new president of Brazil. Together, all Brazilian states assembled in order to build a political framework controlling the relations between the capital and the work. The political first concern was to cool off the social conflicts that were spreading, especially, in the great urban centers throughout the country. Therefore, the proceedings on the broaden objectives, that were to promote the development of the industry in the country, were guaranteed. Throughout the 1930 s decade, gradually, a set of working laws were standardized, and later on, in 1943, by the end of the New State, systematically organized in only one document, the Consolidação das Leis Trabalhistas (CLT). Although the working laws had brought a few guarantees to the workers, there were some side effects that started to hinder the workers liberty of speech, fact that was understood by the government as necessary so that the industrialization process could actually take place.

do segundo conflito mundial.
do Piauí.
In this work we propose to investigate the urban modernization of the town of Campo
Maior, Piauí, regarding it as favored by the golden period of Carnaúba wax extraction
in the state during the 1930s and 1940s. We observe that the time in which the wax
came to prominence was the beginning of World War I, being exported to some
belligerent countries, since it was possible to extract from the product an explosive
component named picric acid, used in the making of gunpowder. This fact became
the wax the main support of the economy of Piauí and Campo Maior, consolidating
its importance from the conflagration of the second world conflict. To investigate the
urban growth we analyzed some modern equipment, as well as public places and
buildings that were implanted and were pointed out in the official speeches of the
local rulers that represented the town as one of the most modern and progressive of
Piauí. We emphasize yet that the modernization period coincides with the epoch in
which Getúlio Vargas was the Brazilian president. In Piauí we had intervenors Landri
Sales (1931-1935) and Leônidas Melo (1935-1945). The state and national
governments had their bases in authoritarianism and the idea of progress and
modernization that had a strong resonance in Campo Maior. Notwithstanding, we
propose to highlight some lower-class people who took advantage of the urban
reforms carried out in Campo Maior, highlighting their subjectivity as ordinary
individuals that also translated their look upon the town, through chronicles, memoirs
or even interviews. We intend to understand the sensitivities of these people about
this “new town” in which they were living, how they were benefited or marginalized
from the modernizing urban structure. Finally, we want to highlight the new social
skills that developed in the new spaces.

[en] MODERN ARCHITECTURE IN GERMANY: BETWEEN 1900 AND 1933 / [pt] ARQUITETURA MODERNA NA ALEMANHA: NO PERÍODO DE 1900 A 1933LUCIANE GONZAGA DE OLIVEIRA 20 May 2005 (has links)
Moderno. O período
estudado neste trabalho abrange os trinta anos iniciais do
século XX, até a chegada
dos Nazistas ao poder na Alemanha, em 1933. A Alemanha
Primeira Guerra
Mundial afetou toda a Europa e, principalmente, a Alemanha
derrotada,
indústria, a família, a vida humana individual e
passou a determinar o
[en] This dissertation aims at studying the German Modern
Architecture, the social,
political and economical conditions in which it was
developed, its theoretical
background and its participations in the Modern Movement.
The period of time
studied in this paper is the first thirty years of the 20th
century up to the moment when
the Nazis got the power over Germany in 1933. For sixty
years, Germany went
through wars and other important political changes. The
country was unified in 1870
and after the First World War it became a Democratic
Republic in 1918. Then, in
1933, it became a Dictatorship with the Nazi government.
The First World War
affected all Europe and mainly the defeated Germany
establishing a boundary in the
architectonic production. Besides the political
considerations, this moment shows
meaningful changes in science and technology which
influenced the economy, the
industry, the work relations, the family, the human life -
individual and collective, the
city, the daily objects - both household objects and also
the house itself. The
professionals of this time had to deal with a set of
conditions which would determine
the world from then on. These years where expressive in
Modern Architecture, not
only for the new ideas, but also for the practical
attitudes in relation to the
contemporary problems.
