Photo Policière: L'image que l'on donne les policières dans les polars policiers écrit par Chrystine Brouillet, Vicki Delany et Louise Penny / Photo Policière: Representations of Female Police Officers in Police Procedurals written by Chrystine Brouillet, Vicki Delany and Louise Penny

Taylor, Tammy January 2013 (has links)
Masculinity is still regarded as the embodiment of strength and heroism and the female body, weakness and victimization. Philippa Gates, Detecting Women, 282 Despite changes in the treatment of women over the decades, policewomen continue to suffer gender injustices at the hands of their male superiors, as well as from the community they are sworn to protect. The injustices they face are publicized by such media as the CBC, though often in an exaggerated fashion. As fiction often reflects reality, one can expect that the genre of the police procedural will demonstrate not only such gender injustices but also various ways victims respond to them. Like real policewomen, fictional female detectives are too often victims even when they are the protagonists, and even when their author is a woman. Evidence of the victimization of real and fictional policewomen will be explored in this thesis by looking at the history of detective fiction, and through real case studies involving real female police officers, as well as the analysis of certain key characters in focus texts by Chrystine Brouillet, Vicki Delany, and Louise Penny. As a result, it will be shown that the images projected by actual and fictional female police officers, while not always positive ones, are becoming more varied as a result of the feminist movement and as a result of literal and imaginary resistance to sexist stereotypes. Despite having moved into a protagonist position, fictional female detectives all too often have reduced agency and different gendered expectations than their male counterparts. Aspects of gender inequity present in Western societies today creep into fiction and are played out in ways not always possible in reality. Sometimes, sexist problems present in the fictional texts are resolved despite the fact that they still exist in certain policewomen's everyday lives. Stereotypes of what a police officer should be function in ways that reflect and reproduce gender injustices and often exist simultaneously with images of women that resist and oppose these same stereotypes. The representation of policewoman is thus multiple, reproducing stereotypes, blurring them, or erasing them altogether.

Essay on the Linguistic Features in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Nygren, Åsa January 2006 (has links)
<p>The literature on J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter is prolific. People have written on various topics dealing with issues such as translation, etymology and diverse areas concerning the language. In this essay, I examine whether linguistic features such as reporting verbs, adverbs of manner and adjectives contribute to the depiction of heroic and villainous characters. Before conducting this research, my assumptions were that there would be a great difference in the value of the words depending on the character they were associated with. I wanted to see if the heroic characters used verbs and adverbs with positive connotations, and the villainous characters verbs and adverbs with negative connotations. I also wanted to know if the adjectives describing the characters could, in themselves, clearly indicate whether a character was a hero or a villain.</p><p>The results of my research suggested that the choice of particular verbs and adverbs contributed only indirectly to the depiction of the characters. Without context, it was not possible to know if the character was a hero or a villain simply by identifying the verbs and adverbs used to describe their speech. By contrast, the choice of particular adjectives did appear to indicate more clearly whether a character was hero or villain. Finally, the results of my research indicated that context, rather than the use of particular linguistic features was often the most important factor in contributing to the portrayal of characters in the novel.</p>

Archetypy v řecké mytologii / Archetypes of Greek Mythology

Domanjová, Nikola January 2011 (has links)
This work deals with characteristics of Greek mythology and tries to define a myth and to describe the differences between myths and fairy tales. It focuses on an origin and a history of myths, on gods and on heroes. My work also examines a concept of collective unconscious and archetypes, that appears in antique mythology (especially the archetype of a hero). Based on these findings, this work forms characteristic features of heroes, that are applied on the Greek heroes Odysseus and Achilles. Their life stories prove they deserve to be considered as archetypes of heroes. A survey, that deals with a concept of heroism according to contemporary young people, is also part of the work. It reflects not just the teenagers' image of a hero, but it examines their knowledge of Greek mythology, too.

Reflexe příběhu Neda Kellyho v umělecké a memoárové literatuře / Fictional Man: Ned Kelly in Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang in Comparison with Older Portrayals

Prentis, Adam January 2013 (has links)
TITLE: The Fictional Man: Ned Kelly in Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang in Comparison with Older Portrayals AUTHOR: Adam Prentis DEPARTMENT: Department of English Language and Literature SUPERVISOR: PhDr. Petr Chalupský, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The thesis concerns itself with the analysis of various personality aspects of the protagonist of Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang (2000) - Ned Kelly. Albeit a historical figure, Ned Kelly is approached as a fictional character with focus placed on his symbolic status of Australian nationality, myth and manhood, and on the literary means that point to this. The separate aspects are placed in an evolutionary context through comparisons with older portrayals of the same character - in Max Brown's Australian Son (1948) and J. J. Kenneally's The Complete Inner History of the Kelly Gang and their Pursuers (1929), all of which use a heroising approach to the man. The work shows that Ned Kelly may be perceived in many complex ways, with further possibilities for analysis suggested. Comparing the three books, it is found that although considerable unifying tendencies and moments exist, some aspects have a significant difference in focus or emphasis. A shift is noted from a confrontational idealising defence of what is perceived as a historical person to a...

A face heroica de Dionísio nas Dionisíacas de Nono de Panópolis / Heroism of Dionysus in Nonnus Dionysiaca

Lima, Paulo Henrique Oliveira de 30 August 2016 (has links)
This research intend to discuss the way Dionysus was transformed into epic hero in Nonnus Dionysiaca, an epic in forty-eight chants concerning the Dionysian Cycle, from the foundation of Thebes and the establishment of their ancestors to the Olympic apotheosis of the god. The analysis will be based on Dionysos features on the battlefield in opposition to the three main opponents in the poem, Lycurgus, Deríades and Pentheus. For a better understanding of the construction of Dionysus as a hero, an analysis is needed on the social and cultural context in which Nono composes his poem, as well as the poet\'s relationship with Homer, the Greek main epic poet. Attached are the chants XXXIX and XL of Dionysiaca in original greek and the translation made by me.

José Lins do Rego: tipos em transição / José Lins do Rego: types in transition

Villaça, Davi Lopes 12 May 2017 (has links)
This thesis consists in a comparative analysis of some novels by José Lins do Rego, with emphasis on those written after the Sugar Cane Cycle (the series of his five first books, linked by storyline and usually related by their memorialist and documental content). The main point is to study, in the later narratives the generically called independent works the aspects that allows us to read them as many approaches of a common drama, which the writer pursues and portraits by different angles. Promoting a dialogue among those books, focused on the constitution of each protagonist, I hope to discuss the complex relation that such characters develop, if not literally with the past, then with some kind of memory that they, by natural inclination, seem fated to bear, often preventing them to feel connected to the present and determining their conflict with the surrounding reality.

Le "Working Class Hero" ou la figure ouvrière à travers le cinéma britannique de 1956 à nos jours / The Working Class Hero through British cinema since 1956

Marin-Lamellet, Anne-Lise 19 November 2011 (has links)
Since 1956, British cinema has regularly used the figure of the working class hero to represent working-class culture and the social and economic ups and downs it went through whether it was during the so-called Affluent Society (late 1950s-late 1970s) or the early signs of what was then to become an intensifying crisis (early 1980s-late 2000s). Based on a corpus of around three hundred films, this study relates British cinema to its contemporary social, economic and political context in order to attempt a definition of working-class idiosyncrasies and the recurring problems this class has had to face (threat of embourgeoisement or proletarianisation). It also attempts to replace the working class into the heart of all the debates that have stirred British society over the last fifty years and for which the working class hero has become a catalyst (meritocracy, classless society, inequalities, the place of women and minorities in society). Beyond his sociological representativeness, the continuing interest the working class hero has aroused and the fact that his identity rests on an exacerbated portrayal of suffering masculinity rather than a clearly defined class consciousness enable one to contemplate the emergence of a true mythical figure in the British national imagination.

Roteiros semiestruturados de imaginação: diálogos internos com a persona e o herói / Semi-structured scripts of active imagination: internal dialogues with the persona and the hero

Amato, Joel Lerner 22 May 2018 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Joel Lerner Amato.pdf: 967235 bytes, checksum: 079cab8cd9822bb2cf3ca8beb6bf0544 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-05-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The active imagination technique of C.G. Jung is a psychological technique that allows contact with unconscious contents through imagination and intention, seeking self-knowledge and to produce more constructive agreements with the unconscious. These psychic contents manifest themselves in the form of symbols, that can be interacted in a conscious way. Considering the presence of few studies in the national literature on this theme and new applications of it, a qualitative research methodology was adopted, aiming to evaluate a new proposal for the application of the active imagination technique through the elaboration of semi-structured scripts, focused into the themes of the Persona and the Inner Hero (archetypal expressions of all human beings according to Analytical Psychology), and it´s application by a psychotherapist in a semi-directed way, in seven participants, between 18 and 35 years, without previous psychotherapy as a requirement. The objectives are to present a proposal for a semi-directed form of applying the active imagination through such scripts, included here the elaboration of the scripts, the design of the semi-directed form of application, the application of the scripts followed by semi-structured interviews, and the evaluation of the applicability of the proposal, analyzing the factors involved in the experience. The factors chosen were difficulties in understanding the scripts (words and order of descriptions), the question of control, concentration and relaxation, intermediate scenario, delimitation of the manifestation of unconscious contents, relations between the manifest symbols and the theme of the script in the daily routine of the participants, and reflections on the elaboration of instructions for the psychologist applying the scripts. The results indicate that all participants were able to express symbols associated with the themes of each script. Improvements to the initial instructions and aspects of the scripts themselves were suggested. The conclusion is that the semi-structured scripts of imagination and the semi-directed form of applying them were effective in bringing up, to the conscious awareness, psychological contents associated with the themes of the Persona and the Inner Hero through symbols. More research needs to be done with this form of using the imagination, focusing on other themes and specific forms of suffering, as well as about the possibilities of the active imagination to allow the overcoming of suffering through new relationships with unconscious contents. In addition, more studies need to be carried out in the use of the technique in other contexts of the psychologist work, such as human resources, school, among others.

Guimarães, Waldinei Comercio de Souza 15 March 2008 (has links)

This investigation takes place effectively when we define the field of knowledge that is able to help us to understand the phenomena; according to this statement we started with Anthropology, which help us to illuminate the pilgrimage considering the social movements around the rites, the religion, spirituality and the search of meaning present in the human history until these days. The meanings of each rite, symbol, and gesture, have suffered modifications along the history, however they preserve their essence. The pursuit of the modern pilgrim s vision concerning the transformations that happen along the Caminho , lead us to do research among some of the pilgrims of Santiago and check the hypotheses proposed in this project. In this sense, we observed that the experience is capable of reconnecting the person to his or her religiosity and the transcendence enabled through the rite. Finally, we analyze the Hero s Journey of Joseph Campbell and according to the Jung s thoughts, establishing relations between the myth structure and the archetypical expressions. Beginning with an analysis of the data obtained in this research, we found elements that reveal the capability of transformation generated by the rite of pilgrimage to Santiago, a fundamental component in the development process of the self / A redescoberta da peregrinação no Caminho de Santiago de Compostela, observada no final do século XX, desperta um desejo de investigação sobre suas causas e desdobramentos na vida de quem se propõe a percorrê-lo em plena pósmodernidade.
