It has as a hypothesis that hegemonic masculinities and their subordinate variants depend of the historical time and the culture they are inserted in. In other words, there is not a universal and ahistorical model of hegemonic masculinity. It takes as analysis focus the relations established between a group of men who buy sex from sex workers and the sellers, here denominated boys, male prostitutes and sex workers, in enclosed spaces, or male prostitutes bathhouses in the city of São Paulo, places which offer the service of these professionals. It was used as method of research participant observation and semi-structured and in depth interviews with sex workers and their clients. It became possible through the study of this group of men to discuss that hegemonic masculinities and their subordinate variants are in frequent contest for the power and hegemony of the groups, whether it is the group of the clients, whether it is the group of sex workers. It also questioned this group s desire, affection and its intergenerational relations. It proposes that the relations between sex workers and clients are originated from the partners desire and, in some relations, deepen, then constituting new affectivities between the same partners. It brings to discussion the social markers of difference that exist in male prostitutes bathhouses and that configure hegemonies and subordinate between masculinities. It also discusses the relations of power between these groups / Este texto interroga o conceito de masculinidades hegemônica e variantes subalternas destas masculinidades.

Čína jako možný světový hegemon - vybrané aspekty / China as a Potential Global Hegemon - Selected Aspects

Vorel, Tomáš January 2011 (has links)
The thesis deals with analysis of China with respect to its potential hegemony which is defined by three various attributes. Firstly, the economic attribute examines the economic performance of the country, formed by GDP level and its several components. Concerning foreign trade, the most essential part is the country's import situation. As for the financial attribute, it is observed how elements of hegemony interact with the usage of China's currency as the world's key currency and the effects of developed financial or capital markets. The last attribute is concerned with the diplomatic position of the country, determined by the level of military expenditures and its voting power within various international institutions.

Image repair and media coverage following sexual assault in college athletics: two case studies

Igram, Sarah E. 01 May 2017 (has links)
This thesis addresses universities’ image repair strategies when a student athlete is accused of sexual assault and the media’s coverage of these strategies. This is a particularly important issue due to the prevalence of campus sexual assault, as recent studies have shown that one in five women is sexually assaulted in college. Sexual assaults involving college athletes typically receive more media attention due to their high-profile nature. Athletic programs are typically sites of hegemonic masculinity, where men take action to maintain dominance over women. They may do this through misogynistic and homophobic talk or committing violence against women. Athletic departments’ image repair strategies when male athletes are accused of sexual assault also sometimes uphold hegemonic masculinity if their main goal is to maintain the team, which may generate significant revenue for the university. As such, their image repair strategies may allow male athletes to continue to partake in misogynistic practices, including committing violence against women. The media also has been accused of upholding masculine dominance by supporting rape myths or blaming the accuser in sexual assault incidents. This thesis consists of two case studies: the University of Colorado, which faced several allegations of sexual assault by football players in the early 2000’s; and Baylor University, which underwent a similar scandal starting in late 2015. It contains textual analysis of officials’ image repair strategies at both schools and the media’s responses to them. Ultimately, both Colorado and Baylor upheld hegemonic masculinity through their image repair strategies, though Colorado did so on a larger scale. In both instances, journalists were largely critical of their image repair strategies and argued that the strategies were not enough to change the structure of masculine dominance.

Organisation partisane et exercice du pouvoir dans la Russie de Poutine : les paradoxes de la fabrication de Russie Unie (2001-2012) / Partisan organization and exercise of power in Putin's Russia : the paradoxes of the fabric of United Russia (2001-2012)

Fauconnier, Clémentine 22 January 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to examine the issues and modalities of building a political majority in Russia from the 2000s, after a decade marked by the weakness of the Central Executive and party system fragmentation. Created in 2001 to support Vladimir Putin, the situation of the political party United Russia in the political landscape may seem paradoxical. Dominant at all levels of power since 2003, it still remains a tool in the hands of leaders of the Executive, without any real autonomy or influence. United Russia, including officially 2 million members, is not rooted in Russian society and has very few militants. The analysis of the tension between the dynamics of the party’s institutionalization and, at the same time, its maintaining under control of the State appears as a privileged entry point for analyzing, in a comparative perspective, the production of mechanisms of subjections of Russian elected officials. This implies to study the establishment of United Russia and its concrete functioning, the practices of the actors involved in these activities and the meaning they give to these practices. Thus this approach suggests to show how the study of this specific process of party construction is likely to feed a more general and comparative reflection on how the dynamics of differentiation or reconciliation between parties and the State contribute to produce various forms of political investments. For this purpose, studying the party as an institution as well as the comparative historical sociology can show the tensions created by the process of differentiation under the control of United Russia and also how it supports the establishment of new domination mechanisms.

Socio-political Transformation In Uzbekistan: A Study Of Urban Mahallas In Tashkent

Kavuncu, Ayse Colpan 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The Uzbekistani state declared mahalla kengash as a local self-government in order to achieve decentralization in its administrative system. This thesis is a critical study of whether decentralization can be an explanatory concept in the examination of new institution-building in Uzbekistan. This thesis claims that dialectic relationship between the center and local state becomes conflictual when there is inconsistency between (a) (national) ruling class and its hegemony, and (b) (local) ruling class and its hegemony. The hegemony of both national and local ruling classes is shaped according to their capacity for conformity/dissention with the Soviet regime, and neo-liberal structural hegemony. This study based on a case study of Tashkent mahallashas demonstrated that decentralization process has been reversed as a result of the strategies of the Uzbekistani state when the different responses of the mahalla kengash do not conform to mahalla imagined by the state. Shortly, the urban mahalla kengashes of mahalla types which were shaped according to identity politics during the Soviet era could be easily adapted the new regime shifting from class to identity politics / whereas other mahalla types shaped according to class politics of the Soviet regime has fall in difficult situation. Finally, the decentralization policy and hegemonic projects of the regime have been shaped by the dialectic relationship between the state and mahalla kengash. Thus this relationship can be both spatio-temporally and socio-spatially differentiated.Consequently, it has argued that standard theoretical paradigms for understanding transition in post-Soviet local politics are less globally generalizable than previously thought.
