Annotation: The main topic of this thesis is an analysis of tameness and wildness phenomena in particular Hermann Hesse's novels. Thesis will aim to expressions and interpenetrations of those phenomena and their position in period mind frame.Aim will be chronological analysis of those phenomena, their evolution and change in particular novels and an attempt of their synthesis. Au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, un élan de créativité sans précédent métamorphose la conception de l’identité moderne. Les moyens d’expression que sont la philosophie, la psychologie et la littérature participent au développement de questions sur le sens de l’Être et de l’existence. À l’exemple de la position mise de l’avant par l’écrivain Hermann Hesse (1877-1962), ce mémoire tente de définir la question du sens de la vie en tant que problématique existentielle en Allemagne au début du XXe siècle. C’est en suivant le dispositif conceptuel de la conduite de vie et de la voie de délivrance, héritage de Max Weber aux sciences sociales, qu’il étudie le phénomène social de la quête de sens, significatif pour les conceptions modernes de l’identité humaine. Le mémoire aborde dans un premier temps la situation spirituelle occidentale par la notion de désenchantement du monde (Max Weber), le rôle des cadres socialisateurs des sources du moi (Charles Taylor) et l’importance de l’idéal de la transcendance pour l’homme (Marcel Gauchet). À partir d’un corpus de romans (Siddhartha, Le Loup des Steppes, Narcisse et Goldmund, Le Jeu des Perles de Verre), il suit la recherche de sens des personnages de Hesse. À la frontière entre biographie sociologique et sociologie littéraire, ce mémoire prend comme appui les conduites de vie de personnages romancés afin de montrer le phénomène de la quête de sens, moyennant une traversée intérieure pour découvrir leur version propre de la transcendance. Au fil des chapitres, il présente les conceptions de la vérité, de la transcendance, de la délivrance, du sens de la vie dans des allers-retours entre la vie de l’écrivain, son œuvre et la situation spirituelle de son époque. En conclusion, il revient sur l’intérêt de lire Hermann Hesse aujourd’hui et questionne la pertinence de ses personnages comme sources d’inspiration de nos conduites de vie moderne. / In the aftermath of World War One, an unprecedented surge of creativity transformed the conception of modern identity. The fields of philosophy, psychology, and literature challenged and questioned the experience of being and of the existence. Following the ideas put forward by the writer Hermann Hesse (1877-1962), this thesis attempts to define the meaning of life as an existential problem in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. It is through the concepts of life conduct (Lebensführung) and road to salvation (Erlösung), both legacies of Max Weber to social sciences, that it studies the social phenomenon of the search for meaning, significant for modern conceptions of human identity. The thesis first addresses the Western spiritual condition through the notion of disenchantment with the world (Max Weber), the role of socializing frameworks in the sources of the self (Charles Taylor), and the transcendent and immanent approaches to the self (Marcel Gauchet). Drawing on a corpus of novels (Siddhartha, Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund, The Glass Bead Game), it trails Hesse’s characters’ search for meaning. At the border between sociological biography and literary sociology, this dissertation is based on the fictionalized characters’ life conduct as they search for meaning, through their discovery of transcendence. The chapters presents conceptions of truth, transcendence, salvation, the meaning of life, and back-and-forth movements between the writer’s life, his work, and the spiritual condition of his time. In conclusion, the thesis discusses the relevance of reading Hermann Hesse today and questions the pertinence of his characters as source of inspiration for our modern life conduct.

German text / Die gesellschaftliche Relevanz des diakonischen Handelns eines regionalen deutschen Gemeinschaftsverbandes wird in dieser Forschungsarbeit qualitativ erforscht. Diese explorative Studie soll die Gesellschaftsrelevanz diakonischen Handelns, Entwicklungen diakonischer Praxis und ganz grundlegend das Verständnis von Diakonie in diesem Gemeinschaftsverband erschließen. Nach einer auf praktisch-theologische und kirchengeschichtliche Aspekte fokussierten Einleitung werden mittels des empirisch-theologischen Praxiszyklus sowohl Planung und Durchführung, als auch die Ergebnisse qualitativer Interviews dargestellt. Zehn Experteninterviews waren Teil der Hauptforschung. Unter Anwendung der Grounded Theory ließen sich nach mehreren unterschiedlichen Codiervorgängen sechs Typologien diakonischer Gesellschaftsrelevanz herausarbeiten. Die sechs herausgearbeiteten Typen wurden in einer 3x3-Matrix angeordnet, mit den Koordinaten Diakonische Gesellschaftsrelevanz (minimal - zunehmend - profiliert) und Eschatologie (negativ - neutral - positiv). Impulse zur Weiterentwicklung der diakonischen Grunddimension in diesem Gemeinschaftsverband werden abschließend auf Grundlage der Forschungsergebnisse gegeben. / This research analyses the relevance of diaconal action of a regional German community association in its social environment. The explorative study aims to give insight into the social relevance, developments in diaconal practice and the general understanding of diaconia prevalent in this brethren association. After an introduction focusing on practical theology and church history, the study concentrates on the planning, implementation and results of interviews applying the empirical-theological practice cycle. These interviews with ten experts were part of the main research. Through applying the grounded theory, six typologies of diaconal relevance in society emerged from several coding processes. These types were arranged in a 3x3 matrix showing diaconal relevance for society (minimal – increasing – prominent) and eschatology (negative – neutral – positive) as coordinates. Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / In fulfilment of the degree of Magister in Creative Writing: Afrikaans, a novel titled Kielhaal (Keelhaul) is presented in which the main character figures as an abject hero. It is accompanied by a formal essay titled “Die abjekte held in Steppenwolf, Fight Club en A Whistling Woman” (“The abject hero in Steppenwolf, Fight Club and A Whistling Woman”). The essay researches the application of the abject hero in literary texts.

L’absence du dessin des histoires de l’art des années 1950-1960 interroge, alors même que des signes de reconnaissance de la part d’artistes comme Rauschenberg, Hesse, Tinguely,Twombly, Beuys, ou Lebel et d’autres acteurs ont pu être observés.Le dessin doit être défini à partir de ses opérations et compris dans sa relation aux autres médiums. Il est donc considéré comme pratique. En mettant en oeuvre une histoire matérielle, culturelle et sociale de l’art, qui s’appuie sur les dessins eux-mêmes, des documents d’archive et des entretiens avec des acteurs de la période, il s’agit de saisir les relations qui font vivre le dessin.Il s’agit d’appréhender la reconnaissance du dessin et sa redéfinition, entre les interrogations des artistes, les évolutions des critiques et les projets des galeristes et commissaires d’exposition pour montrer comment le dessin se comprend comme une réalité complexe, en acte. Le dessin se redéfinit également comme un moyen de manipuler des images qui deviennent pléthoriques. L’histoire de la psychiatrie confère à la pratique du dessin une valeur expérimentale rarement égalée dans l’histoire de l’art. Cette pratique expérimentale découle de son association à la pensée et met au jour une continuité insoupçonnée dans la période. Qu’il s’agisse d’en renforcer l’assimilation à une « origine de l’art », d’en faire la matrice d’un regard et d’une méthode artistique plus générale, ou le lieu marginal d’une expérience spécifique, la pratique du dessin se comprend dans un éventail large de ses réalités. / Drawing is hardly studied in works of art history focusing on the 1950s and 1960s. This fact is all the more surprising that many artists, such as Rauschenberg, Hesse, Tinguely, Twombly, Michaux or Lebel, but also critics, gallerists and curators took notice of the medium at that time.Drawing must be defined according to its operations and analyzed in its relationshipwith other media. It is approached as a practice. This project is based on a material, culturaland social understanding of art history, it relies on the study of drawings, but also on archive documents and interviews with major figures of the period. From the working process of artists, to the changing discourses of critics and therenewed interest of curators and gallerists, drawing is redefined as a complex object. It allows artists to deal with the flow of images that characterizes the 1950s and 1960s. It also takes on an experimental quality because of its association to the thought process. Psychiatrists andartists have used the practice of drawing to better understand the mind. Whether it is used as an origin of art or as a marginal space implying specific experiences, drawing in the 1950sand 1960s is multi-faceted and is studied as such.

A forma como este dualismo é estruturado, a sua origem e seus efeitos foram investigados nesta pesquisa a partir do marco teórico da filosofia de John Dewey, com seu empirismo naturalista. Trata-se de uma postura que refuta qualquer dualismo, inclusive metodológico, tendo como foco a análise de qualquer fenômeno a partir de uma filosofia da experiência. É a partir desta perspectiva que o pensamento jurídico contemporâneo será desvelado no aspecto específico do dualismo que lhe funda de certo ângulo. Konrad Hesse, teórico associado à Jurisprudência Hermenêutica, foi o centro desta análise que é finalizada debruçando-se em um caso específico julgado pelo Supremo Tribunal Federal, a fim de explicitar a presença do dualismo também neste âmbito específico, sendo escolhido o caso da ADI 3.510/DF. Assim, pretende-se desvelar o dualismo presente na teoria do direito e na jurisprudência da constituição e da realidade. A pertinência disso para o estudo do fenômeno jurídico na sociedade se dá – é o que se espera – na medida em que os processos de interação no âmbito deste fenômeno se deem de modo mais consistente tendo-se em conta a perspectiva epistemológica deweyana. / Epistemologically, Western thought is marked by a dualism – given, historically, since Plato and, modernly, Descartes, with his cogito - which also extends to legal thought. The way by which this dualism is structured, its origin and its effects were investigated in this study from the theoretical framework of the philosophy of John Dewey, with his naturalistic empiricism. It is an attitude that rejects any dualism, including methodological, focusing on the analysis of any phenomenon by a standpoint of a philosophy of experience. It is from this perspective that contemporary legal thinking will be unveiled in the specific aspect of the dualism that found it in certain angle. Konrad Hesse, theoretical associated with Hermeneutics Jurisprudence, was the core of the analysis which is completed with a specific case decided by the Supreme Federal Court in order to explain the presence of dualism also in this specific area; the case was the ADI 3.510 / DF. Thus sets up the dualism of legal theory - Hermeneutics Jurisprudence - the Constitution and the Reality. The relevance of this to the study of the legal phenomenon in society lies - is what is expected – inasmuch as the interaction processes under this phenomenon occur more consistently taking into account the Dewey's epistemological perspective.
