Realismo e redes: dilemas metodológicos na obra de Anthony Giddens / Realism and networks: methodological dilemmas in the work of Anthony GiddensFábio Rodrigues Ribeiro da Silva 10 August 2010 (has links)
This work raises methodological and epistemological questions regarding Anthony Giddens theory of structuration, issues that have been acknowledged and debated by several of his critics. Following clues found in Giddens own texts, it analyses more deeply some works by Mary Hesse and Roy Bhaskar, searching for elements that would help with a methodological reconstruction of Giddens theory. Finally, it argues for greater attention towards Hesses network model, as a much more fruitful tool for analyzing Giddens than Bhaskars critical realism, in order to attempt to solve the dilemmas that Giddens faces. Also included are translations of several articles written by Giddens most important critics, and two papers by Giddens himself, previously unavailable in Portuguese.

Lawrence (1885-1930) / Creative desire and the dynamics of creativity in the novelistic works of Romain Rolland, Hermann Hesse and D.H. LawrenceKatrib, Sarah 19 December 2013 (has links)
Which values and functions, social, ethical as well as poetic, can be attached to artistic creation ? In the novels we studied - 'Rosshalde' and 'Klingsor’s Last Summer' by H.Hesse, 'Jean-Christophe' by R.Rolland, The 'Rainbow' and 'Women in Love' by D.H. Lawrence, creation seems to be the preferred means to resist the mechanization of the industrial society and to hold out against modern disillusionment, even more, it aims at rethinking the foundations of the western world. A civilizing and regenerating role is attributed to art. That leads us to approach different conceptions of the subject and of the identity of the artist : creation as a way to reconcile harmoniously the singular with the universal, and the artist as the reincarnation of a form of philosophy, of a hero, or of a prophet, having ambivalent relations with the community. Moreover, these novels adopt methods of writing and composition from music and painting, but they also give a lot of importance to dialogues making use of conceptual developments. By integrating reasoning to fiction, the novel does not fix the interpretation. It criticizes dogmatism and enhances dynamic thinking constantly linked to experience.

Poétique de l’allégresse : initiation à la Heiterkeit dans l’œuvre en prose d’Hermann Hesse / Poetics of joy : Initiation to Heiterkeit in Hermann Hesse’s prose writingsPoulain, Béatrice 20 January 2012 (has links)
Depth and complexity of Hermann Hesse’s poetical thinking have been foregone by many of his critics misled by the limpidity of a prosa which, displaying his concept of serene joy (Heiterkeit), dissented from « the consternation» litterature that prevailed after the war. To identify and to analyse this poetics we need to adopt Hesse’s active perspective of reader-creator while following his progressive liberation from different kinds of philosophical and poetical frames: in a first crisis, he struggles himself free of the Heiterkeit canons of the Weimar Classics whereas the second crisis enables him to break the spell of Nietzsche’s creative poetics of joy. Urged by the historical context of the late twenties, Hesse creates his own poetics of resistance against totalitarian ideologies, in particular against National Socialism: an utopian and initiatory poetics of joy, that does not dismiss the non-rational of the mind like does Thomas Mann. Hesse’s poetics is based on the historical and anthropological foundations originating from his reading of Jacob Burckhardt’s works. It therefore prevents itself from the pitfalls of another poetics dedicated to the historical and transhistorical fighting against fascism, i.e. Walter Benjamin’s poetics of the aura and the “dialectical image”. Hesse’s poetics of joy is an initiation, through traces of testimony, towards an allegorical reading-writing which allows the individual to take part in an authentic communication that creates both truth and joy by the cultural sharing of an original poetical language through which the human being is coming, together with the other, historically to himself.

Challenges Surrounding the Conservation and Replication of Eva Hesse’s SculptureNurmi, Kaela L 01 January 2015 (has links)
The sculpture of German-born American artist, Eva Hesse (1936-1970), presents many conservation challenges. Hesse’s experimentations with latex and fiberglass created stunningly innovative works of art in the late 1960s bringing these unorthodox materials into the world of fine art; but now these materials are creating major conservation problems. Her artwork is an extreme example of the conservation challenges of contemporary art. This thesis examines the challenges surrounding the conservation and replication of Eva Hesse’s large-scale latex and fiberglass sculptures. The latex and fiberglass materials that captivated Hesse are compromising the structural integrity of her large-scale sculptures today. Hesse’s art forces conservators to establish conservation practices specific to modern and contemporary art. Although replication pushes conservators to re-examine their usual practices and violates the standard notion of minimal intervention, the replication of Hesse’s sculptural works is necessary to represent her artistic vision.

Normal WhatFriend, Zoe L January 2005 (has links)
Master of Visual Arts / The title Normal What refers to a group of paintings that emerged from my Masters of Visual Arts 2004/05 studio project. Individual paintings are chronological self portrait reflecting upon my own experiences and those in the wider community who at some point in their lives have had to endure the struggles, and negative stigma that is so often attached to those who have become marginalised and detached from mainstream society. People found in this category include the disabled, homeless, unemployed, and those with addiction problems. Each painting bears a close connection with techniques associated with abstract expressionist painting. This radiates through the vast expanse of drips, stains and explosions which appear to suffocate the paintings delicate monochrome surface. Strong references to Kristeva’s theory on Abjection arrive through the aggressive and violent outbursts of paint that evoke an atmosphere of symbolic horror, personal dysfunction and social oppression. This emerges out of the shadows and private spaces of the painting’s domestic interior. Deep emotional, psychological, sociological sensitivities are raised throughout my studio practice. Combined with a series of unresolved tensions, and questions surrounding normality run deep a consequence of society’s push for normality are being felt most acutely by those effected by this form of sociology. The ideas raised through my studio project had a profound influence on the research being conducted for the dissertation. Kristeva’s theory on Abjection, along side the practices of Eva Hesse, Barnett Newman, Agnes Martin emerged from a group of highly emotional abstract paintings. This strengthened the connection between the studio project and the dissertation. Aimed at deepening a personal understanding an commitment to researching the subject of normality and how it could be successfully articulated through a visual narrative.
