Is the Contemporary Historical Novel Convincing? : An Analysis of the Interaction between Fact and Fiction in Three Prix Palatine Novels.

Ekström-Sotto, Caroline January 2015 (has links)
The focus of this study is to analyze in what way the historical novel can be convincing and if the interaction between fictional and factual narration within this genre influences the degree to which it can be convincing. The three novels chosen are Les Naufragés De L’Île Tromelin by Irène Frain, Les Enfants d’Alexandrie by Françoise Chandernagor and Bison by Patrick Grainville, for which all three authors received Le Grand Prix Palatine. In the introduction are presented the general characteristics of the genre as well as its capability of being convincing, outlining that there is a possibility for a fictional work to seem more convincing than a purely factual one. Also defined are differences between the contemporary and the classical historical novel. This is done in order to take into account in the analysis what might be learnt from the contemporary historical novel. The theoretical framework consists of the semantic definitions of fictional versus factual narration as presented by Jean-Marie Schaeffer, as well as theory of how the reader’s immersive experience enables ontological crossings. What the analysis is able to show is that all three novels include four types of truth claims, that the reader can be convinced of all four and that this conviction is connected to the context to which the reader associates the historical/literary character. The analysis also brings forth what can be thought of as the historiographical pact, a term analogous with Philippe Lejeune’s term ‘the autobiographical pact’, which establishes a referential link with history. What is in the end considered the most convincing literary device is the inclusion of factual markers referencing real-world sources. In all three novels, it is also possibly to identify truth claims concerning human nature.

The Fictional Imaginations of the Terror (1793-1874) From Isabelle de Charrière to Victor Hugo

Kompanietz, Paul-Adrien 12 January 2018 (has links)
From Isabelle de Charrière's lettres trouvées dans des portefeuilles d'émigrés ( 1793) to Victor Hugo's Quatrevingttreize(1874), which reinterprets the period in the mirror of the Commune, the Terror fed the imagination of manynovelists. Unprecedented surge of violence or unheard of democratic moment ? The fecundity of this revolutionary moment is in part due to its paradoxes and the tensions triggered by its memory. At the heart of the historical and ideological controversies that, to this day, have not been extinguished, the Terror was, throughout the 19th century, a subject even more topical than the revolutionary tremors of 1830 and 1848, particularly by reawakening the memory.Exceeding the historical nove! genre, the fictional treatment of the Terror is not the result of a simple fictional transposition of the historical reality, but can be envisaged as the fruit of a system of complex relationships between historiography, memorial literature and other literary genres. From the Revolution to the Commune, the fictional genre was one of the spaces where the invention of what we have chosen to call an "imagination of the Terror" - in homage to Daniel Arasse's great book - was not exhausted by the image of the guillotine. Looking at how the novel participated, in conjunction or competition with other types of writing, in discursive constructions and the development of this imagination, and how undertaking fictional figurationrevolved around ideological issues and political choices, is the challenge of this new investigation. From Ducray Duminilto Dumas, Sénac de Meilhan to Barbey d'Aurevilly, Germaine de Staël to George Sand, via Ballanche, Nodier, Balzac and even Vigny, this genealogy of fiction dissertation is supported by a large corpus oftexts and intends to makeway for little-known works, whose role was no less than that of the most canonical works in fictionalising the revolutionary Terror.

January 2005 (has links)
Abstract: In this work we intend to study the feminine writing of Juana Manuela Gorriti (1818-1892) and Martha Mercader (1926). Juana Manuela Gorriti is one of the founders of the feminine literature in Argentina and because of the poetical re-elaboration of her writings done by Mercader is that we can re-evaluate Gorriti's contribution to the creation of this modality of narrative. Our purpose is to verify how the feminine space is built up during the nineteenth century. This is accomplished by us through the anlysis of four books by Juana Manuela Gorriti - Oasis en la vida (1888), Peregrinaciones de una alma triste (1876), Cocina ecléctica (1890) and Lo íntimo (1892). The three first books show to us the exterior spaces while the last one reveals the interior spaces - the private ones -, described in an autobiographical way by the Argentinian writer born in Salta. After that we analyse the novel Juanamanuela mucha mujer (1980), by Martha Mercader, in which she tells the life of Juana Manuela Gorriti and re-reads her writings. This is a book we consider a contemporary historical novel, in which the lifetime of the writer from Salta is recreated in a fiction revealing to the readers aspects and ideas already implicit in the own discourse of this novelist of the nineteenth century. In this way, it is possible to conclude that the conquest of the feminine space benefited itself with the positions and propositions of Juana Manuela Gorriti. It is possible to be said once they reached an explicit position about the questions and the feminine universe in Martha Mercader's narrative, whose book reaffirms and solidifies the feminine victories and advances already begun in the ninenteenth century besides asseverating the existence of a feminine writing which has been amplified and enlarges itself more and more. / Doutor

Metaistorija Bulata Okudžavy : Obraz dokumenta v romane Putešestvie diletantov

Ouvarova, Svetlana January 2009 (has links)
This study examines Okudzhava’s depiction of the process of documentalization of the past as a defining feature of the novel Puteshestvie diletantov, giving reason to consider it a form of metahistory, or an artistic statement on the subject of historical knowledge. The image of the document plays a central role in the novel Puteshestvie diletantov. Through it, Okudzhava depicts the process of knowing and (re)creating the past, as well as the process of its deformation, supplementation and modification. In the form of a document, the past finds existence in time and space, finds its author and addressee, and becomes submerged in a constantly changing context. Okudzhava does not contest the truth of the past, but rather problematizes it, immersing the reader in its real element – the narrative one, permeated by the creative will of the individual. Within this element, two juxtaposed narrative streams stand out clearly: the fictional and the documentary, each shaping the picture of the past in different ways. By thematicizing the issue of documents as evidence, Okudzhava at the same time thematicizes the influence of narrativity on the process of our recreation of past events, as well as on the course of these same events. The act of compiling a document and the act of narration appear in the novel as the driving force of the action and are treated by the author of Puteshestvie diletantov as a fully fledged manifestation of human will in History. In this way, the metafictionality of the novel (its thematicization and problematization of various narrative forms) becomes the key to its metahistoricality (the thematicization and problematization of knowledge of the past, the composition of History), inasmuch as History itself is represented here in the form of a narrative stream.

Social Memory and Nineteenth-Century British Historical Fiction

January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines the representation of social memory in British historical fiction from 1810 to 1880. I argue that social memory is crucial to the analysis of historical fiction during this period because it affords us an opportunity to see how authors in the nineteenth century viewed the social dimensions of memory as constructed by communities that envision their pasts in relation to prevailing ideologies and dominant authorities. Specifically, literary representations of social memory are important in understanding how communities come together to achieve common goals or resist dominant authorities through their sense of a common past in one of the most popular genres of nineteenth-century literature, the historical novel. The significance of social memory for the study of nineteenth-century British historical novels centers in the fact that it reveals the processes by which kinship or kindred groups and other social groups can be formed and by which historical consciousness is developed and communicated among those groups within the novel and to the reader. Social memory is defined here as a shared vision of the past, its narratives, and its symbols that embodies the cultural and communal influences on an individual's and broader groups contemporary identity. Social memory can represent a positive, unifying force in an individual's lift and a community's day-to-day lived experiences, a force that can be used to achieve common purposes or resist common foes. The activation of social memory, though, offers a paradox: on the one hand, individuals are united by a powerful sense of togetherness as understood by their relationship to the past and its significance to their present, lived experience; yet, on the other hand, individuals may resist this totalizing or homogenizing sense of the past when it threatens the uniqueness of individual subjectivity, specific characteristics of group culture, or forecloses on the possibilities of social action by those on the margins. This dissertation looks at how social memory is represented in non-canonical and canonical historical novels by Sir Walter Scott, Anthony Trollope, Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, George Eliot, and Philip Meadows Taylor.

Lietuvių istorinio romano transformacija (Petro Dirgėlos „Karalystė“) / Lithuanian historical novel transormation (P. Dirgela's "Kingdom")

Marcinkevičiūtė, Justė 19 June 2006 (has links)
The subject of this work is Lithuanian historical novel transformation. (P. Dirgela‘s „Kingdom“) In this work Lithuanian paradigm transformation of Lithianian historical novel is analyzed. Basic attention is commited to P. Dirgela‘s novels cycle „Kingdom“, which was written in 20 century. This influental work hardly ever investigated in Lithuanian literature and criticism. Reviewing Lithuanian historical novel evolution, innovation of „Kingdom“ in Lithuanian prose context is emphasized. „Kingdom“ deconstructs traditional Lithuanian historical paradigm, promoted historical distantion clearness. P. Dirgela‘s work introduces historical implications of Lithuanian past, though author`s and reader`s close time is determined. It is the first decade of independent Lithuania. Historical plane there assumes new literary expression forms. P.Dirgela‘s novel is the complicated „postmodern“ structure work, in which each part is developing new statehood process and it`s present poetic expression aspects. Historical dimension is raised as structure of work, author`s and reader`s found stories and nowadays connection , analogues, phenomenological time providence. „Kingdom“ is the unique piece both in Lithuanian and in the whole historical prose. The work reveals such new prose position, represents open retrospective providence, join modern and postmodern literary expression means. Task of master`s work contains introduction and three sections: „Lithuanian historical novel in... [to full text]

Mitinė jūrinės valstybės realybė Petro Dirgėlos istorinių romanų cikle "Karalystė" / Mythical reality of a marine state in the series of historical novels "Kingdom" by Petras Dirgėla

Galdikienė, Ernesta 11 July 2011 (has links)
P. Dirgėla’s „Kingdom” reflects the conversions of a historical novel. P. Dirgėla’s literary images and basis of thinking is related with cyclical processes in the history of the state (when the past returns to the present) as well as the interdependence of processes or phenomenon’s. „The Kingdom”can be understood as the interactive structure of myth and history and the set up of the Kingdom’s space as mitohistorical reality. The symbolic structure of reality presented in the „Kingdom” largely coherent with the mythical, historical, social or other structures of reality. There was selected only one of the most significant works of the symbolic epicenter of the procedure: a mythical marine and the rising image of Lithuania as mythical marine state. The aim of this paper is to identify the reality of Lithuania as the mythical marine state and discuss its relationship with other symbolic structures in P. Dirgėla’s novel „The Kingdom”. The writing of the work is based on modern theories of myth, hermeneutical and psychoanalytical interpretation of myth reality, historical and cultural interpretation of literature as well as on the concept of history and literature body structure which is found in J. Lacan and other author’s works.

Quand l'intime devient éthique : du régionalisme à l'universel dans la Trilogie niçoise de Louis Nucera / When the intimate becomes ethics : from regionalism to the universal in Louis Nucera’s Nice Trilogy

Langoureau-Morel, Fabienne 15 December 2014 (has links)
In the second half of the twentieth century, writers tried to fathom the world’s upheavals. Louis Nucera’s writings in this post-war context are little known. Yet they cover numerous literary genres. The musical quality of his interior monologue leaves us with an impression unlike anything we have ever known. His narrative becomes a labyrinthine meandering through the maze of memory, in search of a mother gone too soon. The “romancero nucerien”, consisting of a plethora of short portraits, becomes a true family album of the ordinary people of Nice. The reader finds traces of ancestors which will never leave him. The Trilogy novels also plunge the reader into the heart of history and its crises. Avenue des Diables-Bleus, Chemin de la Lanterne and Le Kiosque à Musique span no fewer than twenty-three centuries. At a time when committed literature and ambitious literary schools were vying with each other, Louis Nucera chose to resort to a solitary and intimate voice. He depicts the ordinary people of Nice whilst constantly praising them for the authenticity of the human values they embody. Underneath the captivating voice of these intimate family novels, one can also read, as if it were a palimpsest, a personal history of French communism from illusions to awakening. The author draws upon a true philosophy of life, in which the only entities still worth fighting for are friends, relatives and loving couples. The only rule to be followed is to rediscover a sense of endeavour and a taste for hard work and to keep imparting the lessons of the past. Both an endless literary quest and a painful reflection on the act of writing unfold in his novels.Key-words: Louis Nucera, Nice, 20th century French literature, mother, memory, novel, autobiography, auto fiction, poetic narrative, portrait, historical novel, history, communism.

This research was carried out to analyze the six novels of the series El capitán Alatriste (1996- 2006), by the Spanish writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte, to prove the thesis that the rewriting of the Spanish 19th century organized by the series claims at spreading an “objective and true” knowledge of history, by means of a monological vision of historical facts turned into fiction, thus reaffirming the presuppositions of classical historical narrative. Therefore, our analysis is based on the investigation of the formal hybridism which is formed by means of the simultaneous exploitation of genres, such as the historical narrative, memoirs, the didactic novel, the picaresque novel and the serial novel whose paradigm is provided by Alexandre Dumas’ works. In the analysis of serial rewriting, we made use of Umberto Eco’s theorizations (1964 and 1978) about mass literature, trying to prove that narratives takes on recurrent forms, in which one may find out homologies between the narrative structures, the plot and the author’s ideological propositions. In the examination of the narrative procedures, among other features we analyzed the characteristics of the character-narrator, who acts as an authorized interpreter of the historical events turned into fiction, to the extent that he also takes the shape of a spokesman of value system confirmed in the novels. In that case, we proved that the revisiting of the Spanish history proposed in novels tends to exalt the heroic dimensions of the Spanish imperial history.
