Crouching learners, hidden values: values in school mathematical literacy lessons

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Local and international pundits concur that education systems play a pivotal role in fostering and developing values in learners. In some countries, like South Africa, the values and rights enshrined in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights resonate in the Schools Act. As one of the concerns of education is nationbuilding, my study investigates if the integration of the values does achieve tolerance and co-operation in the classroom by examining how learners make sense of values in the Mathematical Literacy curriculum. While I firmly believe that educational institutions have a responsibility to integrate positive values into all aspects of the school curriculum, it is my contention that learners cannot fully benefit from values specifically related to the Mathematical Literacy curriculum itself on their own. All stakeholders in education need to come together to establish an informed understanding of policy documents and reconcile the complexities and challenges that surround the transmission of values, so that educators will be able to assist learners in a meaningful way. The classroom life of a learner is intricately woven with that of the teacher. In order to unearth the views and practices of learners and teachers, I adopted a participatory approach. The qualitative study that ensued was conducted in three Mathematics Literacy classrooms at secondary schools in Cape Town, South Africa. The observation sessions afforded me the opportunity to experience and appreciate how the teachers integrate values into the Mathematical Literacy lessons while observing learners‟ behaviour in the classroom. The interactions and interviews with both learners and teachers aided in further unravelling their understanding and implementation of values in the Mathematical Literacy lessons. For learners to develop into responsible, caring and morally just citizens who arecapable of critical thought, they equire an education that provides them with the necessary opportunities and tools to develop. Mathematical Literacy is able to provide learners with the relevant opportunities and thinking tools to construct meaning around moral concepts. I strongly believe that for learners to accomplish this goal, educators need to be appropriately capacitated to facilitate opportunities for their learners.I did not find any evidence in the literature that suggests a fail-safe theoretical approach to success in values education. I am of the opinion that for any measure of success in values education, a combination of these theories of learning and moral development has to be employed. / South Africa

Buscamos enfatizar nesta dissertação com a análise dos documentários Fala Tu (2003) e L.A.P. A. (2007) a ideia de que a música, no caso o rap, pode ser utilizada na inclusão social quando expressada de forma ideológica, pelo diálogo que representa na maior parte dos conflitos integrantes da vida na periferia. E, ao estabelecer a música como prática de uma identidade cultural, a análise de Insurreição Rítmica (2008) explicita como a música promove a mudança social, ao retratar a transformação promovida por organizações sociais em bairros pobres de Salvador. Em paralelo à inclusão social, a questão da empregabilidade é mensurada a partir da inclusão no mercado da música digital, no uso das novas tecnologias disponíveis e que vêm transformando a prática do músico independente, ao substituir o consumismo do CD por arquivos de áudio intercambiáveis. Tal problemática foi explorada pelos documentários Música.BR e Internet (2009), We.Music (2010) e Profissão: Músico (2011), nos quais se pode compreender como os músicos dependentes de geração de renda por intermédio da música sobrevivem à transformação no mercado musical. A dissertação desenvolve-se a partir de teorias acerca das questões que envolvem esse conjunto de documentários, como conceitos de inclusão social e digital, identidade cultural e revolução digital no mercado musical juntamente com a análise dos mesmos. Assim, discute-se como se desenvolve a representatividade deste conjunto de documentários que explora as problemáticas relacionadas à inclusão social e digital fazendo uso da música e evidenciando o uso do audiovisual como fator de conscientização de realidades que expressam essas problemáticas / Abstract: The video documentary is an element of mobilization and social criticism it contextualizes the facts of a social problem, evidenced by the recovery of individuals who illustrate their expectations, difficulties and ideals. We emphasize in the analysis of Fala Tu (2003) and L.A.P.A (2007) the idea that music, if rap, can be used in social inclusion when expressed in ideological form, by the dialogue that represents for the most part conflicts of the periphery. And, as we set the song as practice of a cultural identity, the analysis of Rhythmic Uprising (2008) explains how music promotes social change, portraying the transformation promoted by social organizations in the slums of Salvador. In parallel to social inclusion, the issue of employability is measured to inclusion in the digital music market, by the use of new technologies available that changed the practice of independent musicians, to replace consumerism of CD for audio files. This issue was explored by the documentaries Música.BR and Internet (2009), We.Music (2010) and Occupation: Musician (2011), in which we understand how musicians that depend on the generation of income from the music survive under the transformation of the music business. Therefore in the development of this dissertation we have explored theories about the issues surrounding this set of documentaries, as concepts of social and digital inclusion, cultural identity and digital revolution in the music business, along with the analysis. ON THE PREDICTIVE PERFORMANCE OF THE STOCK RETURNS BY USING THE MARKOV-SWITCHING MODELS

This paper proposes the basic predictive regression and Markov Regime-Switching regression to predict the excess stock returns in both US and Sweden stock markets. The analysis shows that the Markov Regime-Switching regression models out perform the linear ones in out-of-sample forecasting, which is due to the fact that the regime-switching models capture the economic expansion and recession better.

Sjuksköterskor kliniska bedömningar och omvårdnadsåtgärder för att upptäcka och behandla sepsis

Bakgrund: Sepsis är ett kritiskt tillstånd och kan drabba alla individer. Sepsis är en vanlig orsak till morbiditet och mortalitet världen över. Snabb identifiering samt behandling är centrala delar för att lindra lidande samt att öka chansen för överlevnad. Syftet med denna litteraturstudie var att beskriva sjuksköterskors kliniska bedömningar och omvårdnadsåtgärder för att upptäcka och behandla sepsis. Metod: En litteraturstudie med deskriptiv design. Resultatet baseras på 12 vetenskapliga artiklar med kvantitativ och kvalitativ design. Artiklarna söktes via databasen Medline via Pubmed. Huvudresultat: Resultatet visade att sjuksköterskor kliniska bedömningar gällande symtom, kännetecken och riskfaktorer bidrog till en tidig upptäckt av sepsis. Bedömningsinstrument var bra hjälpmedel och provtagningar där bland annat blododling var av stor betydelse för identifiering av sepsis. Betydelsefulla omvårdnadsåtgärder var antibiotika, vätska och att patientens tillstånd övervakas för att tidigt kunna identifiera försämring. Slutsats: Denna litteraturöversikt visade att sjuksköterskors kliniska bedömningar och goda omvårdnadsåtgärder var till god grund för att upptäcka och behandla sepsis i tidigt skede. Detta för att bromsa sjukdomstillståndets utveckling samt förhindra mortalitet. Sjukdomstillståndet är diffust och vanligt förekommande inom sjukvården. Vidare forskning bör därför fokusera på att tydliggöra hur verksamheter inom vården ska kunna skapa riktlinjer gällande tidiga symtom och kännetecken och hur behandling ska hanteras. / Background: Sepsis is a critical condition and can effect affect any individual. Sepsis is a common causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Rapid identification and treatment are key elements in relieving suffering and increasing the chance of survival. Aim: To describe nurses clinical assessments and nursing measures to detect and treat sepsis. Method: A literature study with a descriptiv design. The results are based on 12 scientific articles with quantitative and qualitative approach. The articles were searched in the database medline via pubmed. Main Result: The results showed that the nurses clinical assessments regarding symtoms, characteristics and risk factors contributed to an early detection of sepsis. Assessment instruments were good aids and samples where, among other things, blood culture was of great importance for the identification of sepsis. Significant nursing measures where antibiotics, fluids and that the patients condition is monitored in order to be able to identify deterioration at an early stage. Conclusion: This literature review showed that nurses clinical assessments and good nursing interventions were a good basis for detecting and treating sepsis at an early stage. This is to slow down the development of the disease state and prevent mortality. The disease state is diffuse and common in healthcare. Further research should therefore focus on clarifying how healthcare activities should be able to create guidelines regarding early symtoms and characteristics and how treatment should be handled.

Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att identifiera patienter med misstänkt sepsis på en akutmottagning : tid är överlevnad / Nurses experiences of identifying patients with suspected sepsis in emergency department : time is survival

Sepsis är ett tidskritiskt tillstånd med hög mortalitet om det inte identifieras i tid. På en akutmottagning är det sjuksköterskor som är den yrkesgrupp som ofta i första skedet möter patienter med sepsis. Författarna ser det intressant att studera hur sjuksköterskorna ser på sin erfarenhet av att identifiera denna patientgrupp. Litteraturen stödjer att oerfarna läkare och sjuksköterskor på akutmottagningar inte identifierar patienter med sepsis inom rimliga tidsramar. Syftet med denna intervjustudie var att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att identifiera patienter med en misstänkt sepsis på en akutmottagning. Metoden som användes var av kvalitativ deskriptiv design. Intervjuerna genomfördes i form av två fokusgrupper, grupperna bestod av tre sjuksköterskor i varje grupp och samtliga hade minst tre års klinisk erfarenhet av att arbeta på en akutmottagning. Materialet som transkriberades har sedan analyserats med hjälp av en innehållsanalys enligt Graneheim och Lundman (2004). Intervjuerna genomfördes under januari månad 2016. Resultatet visade att samtliga sjuksköterskor beskrev att ökad kunskap om sepsis och dess behandling skulle leda till att sjuksköterskorna på akutmottagningen tidigare identifierade patienter med sepsis. I resultat framkom även att sjuksköterskorna ansåg att pga. hög arbetsbelastning på akutmottagningen försvårades identifieringen av patienter med sepsis.   Slutsatser som kan dras av resultatet är, för att kunna identifiera en patient med sepsis bör sjuksköterskor på en akutmottagning inneha goda kunskaper och yrkeserfarenheter av att vårda patienter med sepsis, då detta är ett tidkritiskt tillstånd. / Sepsis is a time critical condition with a high mortality rate if not detected in time. In the emergency setting, nurses are most often the first healthcare professionals in line to attend to patients presenting with signs of sepsis in the primary stages of their visit to the emergency department. The authors were therefore interested in studying how nurses perceive their experience of identifying this patient population. The literature supports that inexperienced doctors and nurses in the emergency department (ED) do not identify patients with sepsis within reasonable time-frames. The purpose of this study was to describe nurses experience of identifying patients with suspected sepsis in the emergency department. The method used was qualitative descriptive design. The interviews were carried out using two focus groups with three participants in each group. All participants were nurses with least three years experience working in the emergency department. The transcribed material was then analyzed using Graneheim and Lundman (2004) model of content analysis. The interviews were carried out in January 2016. The results showed that all participants agreed that increased knowledge of sepsis and its treatment would promote the early identification of patients with sepsis attending the ED. The results also revealed that the nurses felt that overcrowding in the ED was a factor in delaying the early identification of patients with sepsis. Conclusions to be drawn from the results of this study are that nurses require a strong knowledge and clinical experience of caring for patients with sepsis in order to early identify this time critical condition in patients attending the ED.

Människor med hjärt- och kärlrelaterade åkommor är den främst förekommande patientgruppen att utredas och behandlas inom akutsjukvården. Behandlingsresultatet för dessa patienter har ett starkt samband med ett skyndsamt och korrekt omhändertagande, blir patienten inte korrekt prioriterad kan det leda till allvarliga vårdskador. Forskning visar att sjuksköterskor brister i att urskilja patienter med akuta hjärt- och kärlhändelser ur de stora patientflödena som akutsjukvården idag har. Syftet med studien var att belysa faktorer som påverkar identifiering av patienter med akut hjärt- och kärlsjukdom. Metoden som arbetet grundar sig på är en litteraturöversikt med systematiska artikelsökningar. Datainsamlingen har utförts i databaserna PubMed och CINAHL Complete. Femton vetenskapliga artiklar har granskats, sammanställts, analyserats och kritiskt utvärderats. Resultatet lyfter ett antal faktorer hos sjuksköterskan och patienten som påverkar sjuksköterskans möjligheter att identifiera de patienter som drabbats av en akut hjärt- och kärlhändelse. Sjuksköterskans kunskap, erfarenhet och individuella mål samt patientens demografi, symtombild och tidigare medicinska historia är alla faktorer som redovisas i resultatet. Även betydelsen av fortbildning och beslutsstöd för sjuksköterskan framhålls. Slutsatsen som baseras på studiens resultat understryker sjuksköterskans betydelse i det akuta omhändertagandet av de hjärt- och kärlsjuka patienterna. Sjuksköterskans förmåga att identifiera korrekt vårdbehov för enstaka patient leder till ökad vårdkvalitet för vårdtagarna och en minskad risk för vårdskador. Det är viktigt att ytterligare studera dessa faktorer så att adekvat och korrekt vård upprätthålls vid patientomhändertagande i det akuta skedet. / People suffering from cardiovascular diseases are the most common patient group that is examined and treated in emergency care. Treatment outcome for these patients has a strong connection with prompt and correct choice of therapy, if the patient is not prioritized correctly it can lead to serious healthcare injuries. Research shows that nurses fail to distinguish patients with acute cardiovascular events from the large patient flows in emergency care units. The aim of the study was to clarify factors that influence the nurse's ability to identify patients with acute cardiovascular disease. The method used in this study is a literature review where article searches and data collection have been carried out using the databases PubMed and CINAHL. Fifteen scientific articles have been reviewed, compiled, analysed and critically evaluated. The result highlights several factors in nurse and patient characteristics that affect the nurse's ability to identify patients suffering from an acute cardiovascular event. The nurse's knowledge, experience and individual goals as well as patient's demographics, symptom picture and previous medical history are all factors that are reported in the result. The importance of continuing education and decision support for the nurse is also emphasized. Conclusion based on the results of the study underlines the importance of the nurse’s role in urgent care of patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases. The ability to identify correct treatment for each individual patient leads to an increased quality of care and reduced risk of healthcare injury (for the patient). Further studies of these factors are needed in order to maintain adequate and correct patient care during the acute phase of cardiovascular events.

Bakgrund: Alla barn har rätt att växa upp under trygga förhållanden utan kränkningar, försummelse eller övergrepp. Att bli utsatt för övergrepp kan många gånger leda till både långvariga och akuta fysiska och psykiska konsekvenser för den som blivit utsatt. Enligt statistiken är det upp till 20 % som någon gång under sin uppväxttid kommer att utsättas för sexuella övergrepp. Syfte: Att belysa skolsköterskors erfarenheter av att identifiera barn som blivit utsatt för sexuella övergrepp. Metod: Studiens resultat bygger på fem kvalitativaintervjuer som analyserats med en kvalitativ innehållsanalys med induktiv ansats. Resultat: Att identifiera barn som blivit utsatta för sexuella övergrepp är svårt. Genom att vara närvarande och ha en tillitsfull relation till elever samt att våga ställa frågor kring övergrepp ökar möjligheten att identifiera barn som utsatts för sexuella övergrepp. Konklusion: Skolan är en viktig arena för att upptäcka barn som utsatts för övergrepp. Det handlar om att se de ibland vaga tecknen på att barn är utsatt för sexuella övergrepp, detta kräver kunskap, erfarenhet och att våga lita till den egna intuitionen. / Background: All children have the right to grow up in safe conditions without abuse, neglect or abuse. Being exposed to abuse can often lead to both long-term and acute physical and psychological consequences for the victim. According to statistics, up to 20% will be sexually abused at some point during their childhood. Purpose: To shed light on school nurses' experiences of identifying children who have been sexually abused. Method: The results of the study are based on five qualitative interviews reviewed with a qualitative content analysis inductive approach. Result: Identifying children who have been sexually abused is difficult. By being present and having a trusting relationship with the students and daring to ask questions about abuse, the possibility of identifying children who have been sexually abused increases. Conclusion: School is an important arena for detecting children who have been abused. It is about seeing the sometimes vague signs that the child is being sexually abused, this requires knowledge, experience and daring to trust your own intuition.

Att vårda kvinnor som upplevt våld i en nära relation, en litteraturstudie om vårdpersonalens perspektiv / Caring for women who have experienced intimate partner violence, a literature review from healthcare professionals perspective

Bakgrund: Studier visar att en av tre kvinnor världen över har blivit utsatta för våld i en nära relation. Våld i nära relationer finns i alla samhällsklasser och är ett världshälsoproblem. Vårdpersonal kommer ofta i kontakt med kvinnor som blivit utsatta för våld av en manlig partner. Många kvinnor mister livet varje år på grund av konsekvenserna från våldet. Syfte: Att beskriva vårdpersonalens erfarenheter av att vårda kvinnor som blivit utsatta för våld i en nära relation. Metod: Designen är en litteraturöversikt. Datainsamling har skett i databaserna Cinahl och PubMed. Resultat: Resultatet är baserat på 15 vetenskapliga artiklar och visade tre huvudområden: identifiering av kvinnor som lever med våld i en nära relation, hinder för att kunna identifiera de utsatta kvinnorna och vårdpersonalens möte med kvinnor som lever med våld i en nära relation. Vårdpersonalen upplevde svårigheter att identifiera kvinnor som blivit utsatta för våld i nära relationer. Hinder för att utföra screening var framförallt brist på kunskap och utbildning hos vårdpersonalen. Vårdpersonalen upplevde det svårt att möta våldsutsatta kvinnor, på grund av att det fanns svårigheter att distansera sig från de utsatta kvinnorna. Slutsats: Utifrån denna studie kan slutsatsen dras att riktlinjer, kunskap och träning behövs samt rutiner för att kunna utföra screening, för att vårdpersonalen ska kunna identifiera och ge kvinnor som lever med våld i nära en relation en god vård. / Background: Studies show that one of three women worldwide are exposed to intimate partner violence. Intimate partner violence exists in all social classes and is a global health problem. Healthcare professionals often come in contact with women who have experienced intimate partner violence. Many women lose their lives each year as a result from the violence. Purpose: To describe the healthcare professionals experience of taking care of women who have experienced intimate partner violence. Method: The method is a literature review. Data collection has taken place in databases Cinahl and PubMed. Results: The results is based on 15 scientific articles and three main areas emerged in the outcome: identification of women who lives with intimate partner violence, barriers to identifying the vulnerable women and healthcare professionals meeting with women who have experienced intimate partner violence. Healthcare professionals experience difficulties in identifying women who were exposed to intimate partner violence. Barrier to performing screening were primarily lack of knowledge and training in healthcare professionals. The healthcare professionals experienced it difficult to meet women who lived with intimate partner violence, due to the difficulty of distancing themselves from vulnerable women. Conclusions: From this study, the clue can be drown that guidelines, knowledge and training are needed, and also routines for screening, in order to identify women who are living with intimate partner violence.

From this anxiety I developed a study in the School of Early Childhood Education (EMEF), located in the remaining community Quilombo Poça in Eldorado, Vale do Ribeira-SP. The main objective was to understand how the teaching education institution deals themes related to the symbolic representation of blacks in the school, in textbooks and in their interracial relationships present in the institution. The field work was supported by the neighborhood association and school staff. Thus observations were made in community, interviews with residents, analysis of activities developed in school, the speech of teachers and principal. In this process I realized that the results obtained confirm the hypothesis and answer the problem that guided the surveys of these data: The current curriculum does not deal rural demands and far less quilombos, the content, images and representations used are distant from a critical perspective, historical and current. It is remarkable institutional failed on the topic, which seems that is not a problem. I conclude by recommending that the discussions are focused on the enlargement of the discussion about the quilombola and racial questions. A partir desta preocupação desenvolvi um estudo na Escola de Educação infantil (EMEF), localizada na comunidade remanescente do Quilombo Poça, no município de Eldorado, Vale do Ribeira-SP. O objetivo geral foi compreender como a unidade de ensino aborda temas ligados à representação simbólica dos negros(as) no espaço escolar, nos livros didáticos e nas relações e ilustrações inter-raciais presentes na instituição. O trabalho de campo contou com o apoio da associação de moradores e funcionários da escola. Desse modo foram realizadas observações no cotidiano da comunidade, entrevista com moradores, análises de conteúdos desenvolvidos na escola, discurso dos professores e diretoria. Neste processo eu percebi que os resultados obtidos confirmam a hipótese levantada e responde o problema que norteou os levantamentos desses dados: O currículo atual não atende as demandas rurais e muito menos quilombola; os conteúdos, imagens e representações utilizadas, eventos, estão distante de uma perspectiva crítica, histórica e atual. É notável a omissão institucional sobre o tema, que parece não parecer problema. Concluo recomendando que sejam ampliadas as discussões voltadas à questão racial e quilombola. Os órgãos competentes, juntamente com a comunidade, precisam pensar, elaborar e implantar um currículo que contemple a realidade concreta do público ao qual se destina a educação
