This thesis examines the case of civil marriage in Lebanon as an example of the contestation of sectarian identities and a political system. Sectarianism in Lebanon and in the Middle East has become not only a seemingly naturally-produced social categorisation, but also the hegemonic epistemological concept through which every social and political act is interpreted. In contrast to this, the Lebanese civil married spouses interviewed in this thesis, challenge sectarian practices and discourse. I examined the context and identities civil married spouses practice. I conclude that certain sites of resistance favour the emergence of civil marriage, where individuals perform alternative practices and political identities. Practices of resistance may cycically trigger the emergence of other pockets of resistance where contestation happens. Nonetheless, as ethnographic research shows, isolated cases of civil marriage happen in many different contexts and circumstances. This research also investigates the limits of civil marriage as acts of social change. I have identified intention and consciousness as key drive which allow political acts to become transformative of power. Indeed, spouses that exhibited high levels of political consciousness identified at the same time sectarianism as an oppressive system to which they intended to subvert with their act of civil marriage. Further, politically-conscious-civilly married spouses demonstrated intersectional subversion not only to sectarianism, but also to other oppressing systems such as patriarchy, kinship or social classes. Ultimately, they contested sectarianism in a non-excluive fashion when it came to their choice of marriage. Finally, resistance, as a reflection of power, is never pure. That is, even self-conscious and self-reflexive individuals that contest sectarianism or other systems of powers do it while embedded in the same structures of power. Confronting one form of power in one context does not mean that they will confront the same form of power in another context.

Esta dissertação de mestrado consiste em um estudo epistemológico da questão ambiental, baseado na análise das identidades territoriais das populações habitantes de Unidades de Conservação (UC’s). Tais populações geralmente têm um modo de vida peculiar e muito vinculado com o espaço onde vivem. Além disso, elas também têm outras percepções sobre a questão ambiental e os conceitos relacionados. Estas percepções, entretanto, geralmente são subjugadas em nome da tecnocracia presente nos órgãos e instituições que trabalham com a temática ambiental. Neste contexto, o trabalho realiza um levantamento dos impasses e conflitos existentes a partir das considerações acima expostas, e os relaciona com as visões, sobre a questão ambiental, dos diferentes grupos sociais envolvidos (poder público, setor privado, ONG´s, movimentos sociais e populações tradicionais). A esta análise acrescenta uma (re)leitura dos métodos científicos à luz da epistemologia (positivismo, neopositivismo, materialismo histórico e dialético, fenomenologia, pós-modernismo e anarquismo), e o modo como cada um deles entende os conceitos de natureza e ambiente. Após, relaciona estas concepções metodológicas com as visões dos diferentes grupos, identificando a posição mais ligada a cada um deles. Com isso, as UC’s são questionadas a partir de sua base epistêmica, que reflete a matriz de pensamento ocidental moderno, e que por sua vez tende a dicotomizar homem e natureza. Ao final, são propostas outras leituras, baseadas em outras matrizes epistemológicas, para superar os impasses relativos a este viés da questão ambiental. / This dissertation consists in an epistemological study of the environmental question, based on analysis of territorial identities of the populations inhabitants in protected areas. Such populations usually have a peculiar lifestyle, very linked with the geographical space where they live. Moreover, they have other perceptions about the environmental question and their related concepts. However, this perceptions are generally subjugated by the “technocracy” present in the agencies and institutions that works with the environmental thematic. In this context, the work carries through a survey, the impasses and conflicts produced by the considerations above displayed, and it relates them with the environmental question views of the different involved social groups (government power, private sector, nongovernment organizations, social and activities movements and indigenous people). To this analysis, it adds a (re)reading of the scientific methods, viewed from epistemological “eyes” (positivism, neopositivism, historical and dialectical materialism, phenomenology, postmodernism and anarchism), and the way as each one of them understands the concepts of nature and environment. After, it relates these methodological conceptions with the views of the different groups, identifying the position more connected with each of them. From this, the protected areas are questioned from your epistemic basis, that reflects the modern occidental thought matrix, and that tends to dichotomize man and nature. To the end, other readings, based on other epistemological matrices, are proposals, to surpass the impasses relatives to this side of the environmental question.

Their perception of the world is based on what is learnt through the other senses. The research aims to discuss the problematic involving the visually impaired persons and their relationships with photography and art. For better understanding this contradictory relation, the researcher has blindfolded his eyes to temporarily experiment blindness in six experiments. At the same time, meetings with fifteen visually impaired persons were organized to observe and share information regarding photography for the equivalent development of the work. Essas informações visuais têm grande influência ma vida dos seres humanos, uma vez que a visão desses indivíduos é o sentido mais empregado. As influências acontecem, principalmente, por meio da utilização desmedida de recursos informacionais pelas instituições. Estudos sobre identidade visual não têm explorado de forma satisfatória essa problemática, favorecendo, assim, o pouco desenvolvimento desse assunto em projetos da área. Por consequencia, nota-se a necessidade de definir diretrizes que possibilitem uma implementação desses projetos, tornando-se acessíveis à compreensão da maioria dos indivíduos - consumidores e, especialmente, usuários. O presente estudo tem por objetivo propor parâmetros para análise e desenvolvimento de identidades visuais, os quais serão balizados por meio dos conceitos de usabilidade visual, metodologias do design e a gestalt. Foram constatadas empresas de design especializadas em projetos de identidade visual, lugares onde foram realizadas entrevistas que possibilitaram recolher as marcas para análise. Ato contínuo, os resultados foram analisados e tabulados, permitindo a propositura de parâmetros para análise e desenvolvimento de identidades visuais / Currently, the excess of visual information present in all the media is seen as forcefully, for exemple, in print media, internet and interfaces used by the publicity in conjunction with the design of information. This visual information has great influence in human lives, since the vision of these individuals is the most utilized sense. The influences occur mainly through the rampant use of information resources by the institutions. Studies on visual identify has not explored satisfactorily this issue, thus encouraging the low development of this subject in some projects in the area. Consequently, there is a need to define parameters that enable the implementation of these projects, making them accessible to the understanding of most individuals - consumers, and especially users. This study aims to propose parameters for analysis and development of visual identities, which will be market out through the visual identity projects were contacted, where interviews were realized that make it possible to collect the brands for analysis. Therefore, the study's main objective is to discuss design and visual identity solutions, which can be applied on microenterprises' trade and services spaces. The analysis of questionnaires answered by a group of specialists (sample), as well as an organized interpretation of texs on the theme, made possible the identification of many design related aspects. These results were discussed based on the bibliography, focusing on the aplicability of design solutions in microenterprises' space

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / A pesquisa em questão pretende desvelar as concepções de espaço e lugar presentes em crianças que se deslocam, quer seja dentro de uma mesma unidade geográfica ou entre diferentes áreas. O interesse em conhecer um pouco mais sobre a realidade dessas crianças surgiu há algum tempo quando desenvolvia uma pesquisa numa comunidade, no interior da Zona da Mata de Minas Gerais, de aproximadamente 800 habitantes e tive contato com crianças que teriam as suas vivências locais interrompidas, devido a necessidade de seus familiares saírem para outros lugares. Trabalhando com fontes documentais foi possível perceber que o processo de migração dessas crianças e desses jovens tem início com a própria colonização portuguesa em nosso território, como ficaram registrados em relatos de época, que apontavam a presença de crianças entre os tripulantes que faziam a travessia ultramarinha. Além disso, considerando meninos e meninas, de variadas idades, de três escolas públicas da cidade de Juiz de Fora e trabalhando numa perspectiva interpretativa, foi possível apontar características singulares que estão presentes nas representações de espacialidade dessas crianças que migram e suas interações com a própria constituição da identidade de ser criança a partir do estabelecimento de territórios de infância. / This research intends to reveal the concepts of space and place present in children who move within the same geographical unity or to different areas. The interest in discovering more about the reality of this children has happened some time ago while developing a research in a community of the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, of approximately 800 habitants,where I had contact with children who had to move due to the necessity their parents had to transfer to other places. Working with documental sources it was possible to notice that the migration progress of these children and youngsters started during the portuguese colonization in our country according to the reports from that time that showed trh presence of children among the crews of the ships of teh ultramarine crossing. Besides, considering boys and girls, of various ages, from three public schools of the city of Juiz de Fora and working on an interpretative perspective, it was possible to point unique characteristics which occur on the space representations of the children who migrate and their interaction with the constitution of their identities as children starting from the establishment of territories in the childhood.

La signature est un vecteur de choix pour définir l’épistémè dans laquelle s’inscrivent les artistes depuis les années 1960 car, signe de validation de l’œuvre mais aussi signe d’identité, elle est l’épicentre de plusieurs problématiques. Comprise communément comme inscription du nom de l’artiste sur l’œuvre, les nombreuses métamorphoses esthétiques dont elle fait l’objet, depuis que les frontières de l’art s’élargissent à tous les domaines de la vie, nous permettent d’interroger l’ontologie de l’art tout en soulignant les enjeux profonds dont elle relève. En effet, la signature dans l’art nous parle de notre monde contemporain. Pour en rendre compte nous avons problématisé notre recherche à partir des diagnostics désenchantés de la « postmodernité » et de trois formes de la signature, le signe autographique, l’autoportrait et le nom. À la croisée de diverses disciplines, sémiotique, esthétique, philosophie et littérature, économie, Droit juridique et politique, la signature dans l’art contemporain atteste une expérience commune et partageable. / The signature is a chosen vector for defining the épistémè to which the artists evolve since the 1960’s because, as a sign of the work’s validation but also as a sign of identity, it is the epicentre of several problems. The signature is commonly understood to be the inscription of the name of the artist on the work. However, since the boundaries of art have extended into all fields in life, many aesthetic metamorphoses to the signature enable us to question the ontology of art while underlining the major challenges it incurs. Indeed, signature in art tells us of our contemporary world and to account for this we have problematized our research on the basis of the disillusioned diagnoses of “postmodernity” and of three forms of signature : autographic sign, self-portrait and name. At the crossroad of various disciplines such as semiotics, aesthetics, philosophy and literature, economy, legal Right and politics, the signature in contemporary art attests a common and shareable experience.

Este estudo fundamenta-se a partir do campo dos Estudos Culturais nas suas vertentes pósestruturalistas, bem como estabeleço conexões com algumas proposições de Michel Foucault. Nesta pesquisa, utilizei a Investigação Narrativa como estratégia metodológica. Neste sentido, para a produção dos dados narrativos, foram utilizados questionários e a organização de grupos focais. A aplicação de questionários foi realizada em oito escolas do município de Rio Grande/RS. Os questionários, que tinham como objetivo conhecer os entendimentos dos/as adolescentes acerca da diversidade sexual, identidades de gênero e homofobia, foram aplicados em turmas de primeiro ano do Ensino Médio. Participaram do preenchimento dos questionários duzentos e vinte e um adolescentes, com idades entre treze e dezoito anos. Nos grupos, busquei problematizar a homofobia como uma construção social, cultural e histórica, implicada em sistemas de significação e relações de poder/saber, buscando compreender em que medida os/as adolescentes participantes da pesquisa vão sendo interpelados pelos discursos acerca da diversidade sexual e de gênero, enfatizando a importância dessa discussão no espaço escolar. Participaram dos grupos focais vinte e dois adolescentes, sendo dezesseis do sexo feminino e seis do sexo masculino. Nesta pesquisa, evidenciei que os/as adolescentes entendem a homofobia como uma maneira excludente de agir, na sociedade, na família e também na escola, local que, segundo eles/as, é propício para discutir essas questões. Além disto, percebi, nas narrativas analisadas, a (re)afirmação da heterossexualidade como o padrão normal de sexualidade, uma vez que a homossexualidade não objetiva a procriação e, por isso, não corresponde às leis de Deus. Neste sentido, problematizo a implicação dos enunciados presentes na Bíblia, na produção dos sujeitos, entendendo que as instituições religiosas utilizam as passagens bíblicas como estratégias de controle e de governo sobre os corpos e as sexualidades. Também problematizei o entrelaçamento das identidades sexuais com as identidades de gênero, discutindo o quanto os marcadores sociais de gênero instituem maneiras de ser e agir como homens e mulheres, e de pensar e atuar em relação à sexualidade. Entretanto, ao longo da escrita, enfatizo a escola como espaço privilegiado para a discussão das questões de diversidade sexual e de gênero, contribuindo para a minimização da homofobia, entendendo que essa instância contribui na formação dos sujeitos e de suas identidades. / This thesis aims to analyze the narratives of adolescents about sexual and gender diversity, to explore their statements on such identities, and to investigate their descriptions of homophobia. The importance of debating the issue at school is brought up to discussion. The study is based on the Cultural Studies in its post-structuralist bias, and connections with some propositions of Michel Foucault are established. Narrative Inquiry was used as methodological strategy. For the production of narrative data, questionnaires were done and focus groups were organized. The questionnaires were applied to eight schools in Rio Grande city (RS, Brazil), for first-year groups of high school; two hundred and twenty-one participants, between thirteen and eighteen years old, completed them. In the focus groups, twenty-two adolescents participated, sixteen females and six males. Homophobia was discussed as socially, culturally and historically constructed, which is implicated in systems of meaning and relations of power and knowledge. It was aimed at understanding to what extent the adolescents are being challenged by the discourse on sexual and gender diversity, highlighting the importance of such a discussion at school. The research shows that the adolescents understand homophobia as an exclusive way to behave in society, both at home and school; the latter was depicted as the most favorable place to discuss the issues. Moreover, adolescents (re)affirmed heterosexuality as the pattern of sexuality, since homosexuality is not the objective of procreation and therefore does not correspond to the laws of God. Thus, the implications of statements from the Bible were analyzed as to the production of subjectivities, understanding that religious institutions use the scriptures as strategies to control and rule over the bodies and sexualities of people. Then, the interweaving of sexual and gender identities was discussed, considering how the social markers of gender establish ways of behaving as men and women, and of thinking and acting in relation to sexuality. Meanwhile, the study focused on the school as a privileged space to discuss issues of sexual and gender diversity, which may contribute to the minimization of homophobia in society, taking in to account that school helps in the formation of subjects and their identities.
