Ser cubana e americana, diferentemente: assimilação e tradição nos romances de Cristina García / Being Cuban and American, differently : assimilation and tradition in the novels of Cristina García

Marina Job Vasques de Freitas Espirito Santo 30 March 2007 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the novels Dreaming in Cuban and The Agüero Sisters, by contemporary Cuban-American writer Cristina García, focusing on the female characters living in exile. I intend to examine the varied responses to the experience of dwelling-in-displacement exhibited by these characters and to explore the transformations in their diasporic identities, including processes of assimilation, attitudes towards cultural legacy, and the ongoing negotiation between cultures that leads to hybridity. I also intend to show that Santería and magical realism are the elements used by Cristina García to underscore the connections between the characters and their prior home

O vampiro é o leitor: o processo de vampirização do leitor na literatura fantástica / The vampire is the reader: the proces of vampirization of the reader in fantastic literature

Juliana Silva Ramos 17 April 2013 (has links)
This study starts from the perspective of the fantastic as a space in-between a plural and fragmented space, which is characterized by decentralization and heterogeneity, able to hold even the contradictory perceived as an environment characterized by an inherent duplicity. Knowing this, we may observe that this dual character is intensified in the vampire narratives, insofar as it is extended to vampire and reflected in the reader. Hence, the readers distinctive aspects of this type of narrative are identified and analyzed, recognizing their role in the gender construction and in the maintenance of the open nature of the work, such as a co-authorship in which the registered mark is the hesitation. Nonetheless, more than this can be evidenced from the relation between reader and vampire, after all, generally speaking, the fantastic narrative not only the vampire type always points to the reader as a loose thread that does not allow that the work come to a close. We can also observe, through the description and analysis of different kinds of manifestation of the vampire in literature, a process of reconfiguration of the relation between vampire and reader, and between the latter and the fantastic narrative, as well with the literature as a whole. Thus, its considered the relation of the reader with the classic vampire a scary type , that is marked by disidentification; with the modern vampire a seductive type, and humanized in the figure of Louis, Anne Rices character marked by identification; and with the contemporary a human and seductive type marked by the appropriation of identity. In this last movement, which is understood as the vampirization of the reader, the aim is to prove that, after he is transformed, recognizing himself as such in his double (the vampire), he nurtures himself on the vital force of this double and on the fantastic narrative, and retains the appearance of hesitation, which is the driving force of the genre in question. The reader becomes the character more active in the narrative, operating in the realm of reality, and also in fiction. The understanding of this process from disidentification to the appropriation of identity is probed by the analysis of these three vampire narratives, that are outstanding to the thought developed in this study: Bram Stokers Dracula, Anne Rices Interview with the Vampire, and Flávio Carneiros A Confissão

One of its methodological strategies consisted in selecting teachers to articulate municipal schools and the community in EE actions. Thus, a working group was formed/created, consisting of basic education teachers, educational managers / supervisors and this work´s author in the development of her doctoral research. We understand that the way it was designed and developed, especially with regard to reflection and dialogue on the practices among all participants, ProMEA Network also meant a process of formation of environmental educators imbedded in the scope of their activity. The objective of this research was to understand the ways in which a process of EE in a public school can contribute to the formation and construction of the identities of teachers as environmental educators. We also sought to understand the contributions of some specific aspects of the project: the environmental mappings and diagnosis and the watershed approach. The research project was approved by the Ethics Committee on Human Research of UFSCar (Decision 09/2012). The theoretical framework was the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer and the dialogic pedagogy of Paulo Freire, according to which, we assume an intersubjective epistemology, in which knowledge is constructed on dialogue between the subjects about their experiences. Methods and techniques that allow dialogue between the subject and the interpretation of their language were used. The main trajectories of approximation of basic school teachers to EE have been the specialization and / or extension courses and the introduction of EE in their teaching practices. It is also important to emphasize the role of personal experiences and interpersonal relations that acquire new meanings in this process. The acting of environmental educators in the formal education needs to have an institutionalization that values EE in school and facilitates their work within the current structure. The dialogical and critical perspective of EE was highly valued because cooperation, dialogue and reflection among teachers about their practices and their role in school and in society as a whole were mentioned as important aspects in a formative environmental process. This process also needs to produce joy and satisfaction in school life, which favors changes in the professional and personal educators practices. From their EE practice, teachers build an ecological identity, notwithstanding heterogeneous and provisional, depending on opportunities for action, leading them to identify with the environmental ideals not only in the professional context, but also taking these ideas and practices for their personal daily lives. Therefore, in the school context, EE becomes a pathway to the environmental field, and the institutionalization of EE in basic education is essential for the continuity of the construction of this identity by the teachers and consequently environmental educational activities.

A memória coletiva e a construção da identidade em famílias da Sociedade Israelita de Ribeirão Preto / The collective memory and identity construction in families from Israeli Society of Ribeirão Preto.

Milena Callegari Cosentino 06 June 2013 (has links)
Changes in society and the current acceleration of historical time lead to a impulse and cohesion with the past, to root of the origins, seeking identity clues contained in this collective past. The phenomena of globalization seem to lead to a need for rootedness and continuity; these needs are filled by the memory. From the perspective of Maurice Halbwachs memory has both an individual and a collective character, being partly shaped by family and social groups. It reveals both aspects of personal and social identity and points which place individuals and groups occupied in society. The Jewish tradition is the tradition of memory by excellence and the Jewish people´s history illustrates the mechanisms of memory and remembrance. In this tradition rituals and accounts are channels that transmit memory through the ages. The aim of this research was to study how members and relatives from Jewish community live the collective memory and what it means in their everyday lives, in order to apprehend the process of individual identity construction. We interviewed 13 people from five different families, descendants of Jews who immigrated to Brazil. The contact was provided by the Israeli Society of Ribeirão Preto. To interview, we used the oral history method, a linear and individual narrative of what the participants considered significant. In this method, the memory is a way of historical evidence and should be considered as such. Considering that in memory people build a sense of the past, reflection occupies a key place to resignification this past remembered. The interviews were taped and transcribed, are presented in full. Participants are categorized in groups by family and parentage. Family 1: Maria (daughter), Fernando (grandson) and Calebe (grandson); Family 2: Patricia (daughter) and Iracy (granddaughter); Family 3: Antônio (son), Josy (granddaughter) and Alex (grandson); Family 4: Vânia (daughter) and Talita (granddaughter); Family 5: Zélia (daughter), Daniel (grandson) and Raquel (granddaughter). The names are fictitious to preserve their identity. In the interviews we noticed a wealth of diversity and similarity: they are people from the same family or different families, who realize and elaborate their families experience in different, particular, complementary and sometimes similar ways, which enriches the analysis and encourages reflection, serving as a model for some aspects of life. Also realize a process of identity construction: need for tell or silence; how they face traumatic events; how preserve or not religion and traditions; changes over the generations; the relationship with the work and the medium in which they live; values inherited and transmitted to the next generations, among other aspects that emerged in the narratives. The concept of collective memory illuminated the way we look into the participants and their accounts. Enabled us to observe what became from the past in the group studied and what the group made with the past. More than conclusions or assumptions, we caution that the interviews have countless content to be explored, and only some of these aspects were approached in this study.

L’impact des outils d’évaluation qualitative et du web 2.0 sur le développement et l’identification des compétences professionnelles des enseignants de langues / The impact of qualitative assessment tools and web 2.0 on the development and identification of language teachers’ professional skills

Longuet, Frédérique 06 December 2012 (has links)
The research aims at exploring an alternative approach to a standard-based certification assessment used in teacher training and qualification. The underpinning question of the thesis is the following: can a reflective project approach enhanced by web 2.0 tools and qualitative assessment help develop the professional skills needed by future language teachers when still at university? The empirical research has been conducted with three student classes. The theoretical basis and the operationalisation of the research question have thus emerged as the research was being developed. The gathered corpus is varied (logbooks, professional writings, community blogs, collective interviews). Both the qualitative analysis and computer-aided discourse analysis bring to light marked elements pointing to the relevance of the chosen approach.

LINGUISTIC PERFORMANCE AND IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION WITHIN CONTEMPORARY COOKING : A Comparative Study of the Language Use of Two British Chefs

Ekberg, Lena January 2014 (has links)
This is a limited linguistic study that focuses on contemporary language use of two British nationals who are well-known professionals within cooking, and who perform linguistically in the writing of cookery books and in television shows. There are two linguistic foci for the study: a gender perspective and a social class perspective. The aim is to evaluate the linguistic features that are characteristic of the two subjects in relation to the research approaches and in relation to previous research from these perspectives, and to compare their respective language use from the selected material. The study also aims to explore how the language use and linguistic style of each subject may contribute to his or her identity and to the professional image marketing processes the employ. A quantitative method is used for the study of specific linguistic features and to detect the presence or absence of these features. A qualitative approach is used when discussing and commenting on how the qualitative result may have impact on, or may contribute to, individual style, identity and professional branding. The texts for the study is randomly chosen and comprises written texts in two cookery books of each individual and spoken language in one television episode, of each person, from broadcasted cookery shows. Due to the randomly selected and limited data, the study does not claim to be statistically relevant. Rather, it presents possible tendencies. The results of the study show that the subjects act linguistically in accordance with traditional findings and previous research from the perspective of social class, but opposite to traditional findings regarding gender. This result raises the question as to whether or not class may have priority over gender as a linguistic feature, with higher relevance as a social variable, and further research is suggested within this area.

Identity construction through English second language learning : a case study of French speaking students at the University of the Western Cape

Wunseh, Quinta Kemende January 2014 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / The purpose of this case study was to investigate how the Francophone students from Congo, Gabon and Cameroon negotiated competence and identities in English (L2) in and outside the classroom. The study also aimed at understanding the nature and extent of academic support that was made available to the Francophone students who had to learn through the medium of English (L2) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Through the lens of the sociocultural and poststructural theories, the study argues that identity construction in a second language is a fluid phenomenon which should be understood within a particular context, particularly in multilingual environments like UWC. The study followed a qualitative research design which involved three methods of data collection, namely, observations, semi-structured interviews and student narratives. A thematic analytical framework was used to understand the Francophone students’ experiences, and how they negotiated and (re)constructed competence and identity in English (L2) in the lecture rooms and in local communities. The findings of the study indicate that English (L2) was perceived as an investment by the Francophone students. They show that competence in English (L2) was a source of voice and agency for the students. They also illustrate that there is a close relationship between (second) language learning and identity construction, and that identity is socially constructed. The study concludes that identity construction is a fluid phenomenon which should be understood in relation to the changing social context, which is embedded in language competence.

La formation de l'accountability en situations conflictuelles / the formation of accountability in conflicting contexts

Grisard, Claudine 04 June 2014 (has links)
This doctoral thesis examines Robert’s (1991) conceptualization of accountability in conflicting situations. In organizational contexts, individuals give account in two ways; at a distance, to show that their actions are aligned with the main goals of the company – hierarchical accountability -; in face-to-face situations, to provide explanations to people they meet - social accountability. First I study how accountability takes shape when an individual faces two antagonist demands for accountabilities towards the same act. Interviews were conducted with employees from CSR departments, whose mission is about providing an answer to social demands in the name of the company, while staying aligned with business principles. With the help of Foucaldian concepts of “Ethics” and “Moral” (1991), I show that employees interpret those two demands within their own norms and provide an answer that satisfies themselves first. This specific answer is rejected. Accountability is interrupted. In order to re-establish accountability, a community is created around that specific answer, gathering employees from various companies. This community provides a space to give accounts and confirms CSR managers are acting appropriately.Second, analysing ethnographic material, I try to understand how accountability takes shape when certain employees oppose the mission of their colleagues. Precisely, the discussion takes place regarding a product, which has been developed especially for poor rural populations, who are assimilated into the “underdeveloped world” and with which the Malian elite would not be associated. First, with the help of Saïd (1978) and Fanon’s (1952) work, I explain the reason for that class conflict through the dichotomy between “North and South”. This dichotomy has been translated south to “local elite / rural population”. Second, I show that to overcome difficulties, employees develop alternative forms of accountabilities toward villagers and toward themselves. The second form aims to develop mutual support but also reinstate accountability toward hierarchy by using their personal positions and degree of power in order to take a coordination action.Overall, this doctoral thesis shows that hierarchical accountability can be momentarily interrupted and later can be restored by the development of alternative types of social accountability.
