This dissertation proposes to discuss the differences in the representation of homosexual relationships, concerning the narratives Duas iguais by Cíntia Moscovich and "Terça-Feira Gorda” and “Aqueles dois” by Caio Fernando Abreu. Therefore, this reflection is based on the queer theory concepts, under the light of cultural studies in order to understand the social, historical and cultural factors that affect such representations. From this perspective, issues concerning gender and identity constructions will be iscussed to analyze the literary discourses proposed by these authors. Thus, studies on Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Stuart Hall and David William Foster will be used as a theoretical basis to reinforce the hypotheses. In line with the arguments discussed, the relationship between literature and society is relevant to support the analysis of homosexuality in the literary context. Moreover, Antonio Candido’s body of work is essential to articulate the research.

Finding Sundays: A Collection Of Stories

Martin, Tamra Artelia 01 January 2012 (has links)
Finding Sundays: A Collection of Stories is a collection that explores the lives of people in the fictional town of Hickory Springs, Virginia. The title story "Finding Sundays" follows the life of Deacon Taylor and connects him to the characters around him in the proceeding pieces. These stories explore the lives of Deacon, his family, and his childhood friend, Sandra. The focus of this collection is not meant to be about spirituality or religion in general, although these exist as themes in the background of the stories. Instead, it is meant to look at how the lives of people connected through a church and a small town setting can affect them and lead them on different paths through the choices they make. Their personal struggles and challenges help them to either discover who they are or lose a piece of themselves in the process, which is especially true for Deacon. He is the character who appears as a child, as an adolescent, and as an adult. Self-discovery is not always peaceful or satisfying for him or any of the characters around him, and their individual journeys show this process and the different events that come from the choices they make. This collection focuses on how religious roots, friendships, and familial connections, or the lack of such bonds, affect the characters' own personal views and decisions as well as how they relate to those around them

GONÇALVES, Sílvia Ferreira Caproni 07 August 2014 (has links)
This research aims to understand the moviment constitution from the Field of Public by the theoretical framework of identity provided by social psychology. In a context of strengthening of public administration and increasing the supply of enrollments in these courses, the moviment Field of Public stands out as a collective expression of which is linked to the recognition of the peculiarities of the formation of public managers. This is an exploratory qualitative study. From the study of the legislation that guides the formation of these Professionals and of the fundamental references of administrative science, the assumed identity of the administrator is drawn. The empirical part of the research is developed from interviews with members of the moviment Field of Public bachelors in business administration and analyzed using the Content Analysis tecnique. Based on these interviews, the research shows that significant distinctions between the identities of professional administrators (from companies) and public administrators were a determining factor for the formation of the movement and positioning of denial of this identity was crucial for the respondents entrance in the moviment. The Field of Public was also associated with the idea of emergent paradigm presented by Keinert (2000). According to the survey results, the movement can be taken as na evidence from the consolidation of the Emerging Paradigm pointed by Keinert (2000). It was found that the nature of collective identity construction is an identity of resistance to the imposition of typical benchmarks of hegemonic administrative science. Although the moviment points toward the construction of a project identity, anchored in the multiplicity of the formation of its actors and in the possibility of building multidisciplinary referrals, which can guide the public managers formation or even the creation of an identity for the Brazilian public administration.

Eight integrants of Piracicaba´s team had participated in this research. Initially eight of participants three had been selected, and after only one satisfied some criteria: to be handicapped that uses wheelchair for his locomotion, to be adult and to be Basketball practitioner. The individual identified here as JM was choose because he satisfied the selection criteria and presented a life history narrative more deepened with greater conscience of his life. The Ciampa´s Identity Metamorphosis theoretical conceptualization (1987) and Mead´s Ideas (1972) revisited by Habermas (1990) had been used as theoretical support. Finally, the subject was seen presenting several personages articulated during his life history. After analysis and data interpretation, couldn´t be possible considered him as a fully emancipated subject, but he presented some fragments of emancipation and demonstrated to be in an interesting process of individuation. It was possible to make critical to the enrollment of handicapped in sport programs, that is, questions about until point these programs contribute or not for the autonomy of subject. This reveals the necessity of quarrels that extend the question in the scope to not only enclose the sportive activity, but, to unite to psychosocial aspects that the phenomenon demands like the Identity as individuation and socialization process at the same time.

"E-mail de apresentação pessoal e identidade nas comunidades online" / e-mail of self-presentation and identity in the online communities

Souza, Paulo Rogerio de 23 April 2003 (has links)
This study comprises the investigation of self-introduction e-mail messages sent by individuals who want to take part in two group-discussion lists created for the purpose of practicing English and addressing issues related to this particular language. By focusing on a many-to-many communication environment, this study aims at: (a) presenting the classic and contemporary concepts of community, and discussing which conceptual features allow the establishment of online communities; (b) confronting the interaction that emerges from face-to-face and electronic communication contexts; (c) analyzing whether data conveyed in self-introduction messages depict the engagement between the writer and the text produced as well as the role performed by the writer in the interaction; and (d) identifying which attributes of the personal and social data put across indicate the sender’s social identity. As for the theoretical foundations, the discussion about online communities includes a description of group-discussion lists both in terms of their internal organization and of the interactive behavior of their members. The analysis of the self-introduction e-mail messages is based on the notion of roles performed in interaction and on the concept of social identity construction (Goffman, 1959, 1963, 1967). The constitution of the users’ identity is inspected through the investigation of some specific lexical itens (I, me, we, and my), and their collocation. The outcomes of this investigation suggest that group-discussion lists may be conceived of a group of people who, by sharing common interest. Furthermore, the sender’s identity is grounded on the personal and social information provided by his/her self-introduction discourse which also reveals his/her social biography.

(2010) / The work of Maïssa Bey at the hinge of transformations : History, society and creations.

El kalach, Rose 28 May 2019 (has links)
In the contemporary Algerian context, the woman actively participated in wars for independence, had access to the school of the Republic and imposed her presence in a male-dominated environment. Under the Algerian Civil War, the tragic history has made the intellectual woman moreover the first target of religious extremists. The Algerian authors had the choice to be quiet, they preferred to write, browsing as is the case for Bey, the history of contemporary Algeria. Maïssa Bey is part of this generation of writers who have said the horror of history, who felt they were the depositary of a collective history that they attend as women first, then intellectual. But if Bey novels arise as intellectual support for the fight against the excesses of historical, social, religious violence, etc., the fact remains that Bey's individuality gives way to the word of the collectivity , each reader can recognize in the portrait of a victim the figure of any person arbitrarily driven to silence. It is precisely at the turning point of all these transformations that have touched the history of Algeria, the Algerian society and the romantic creation resulting from an identity crisis that the work of Maïssa Bey is located and that’s what we intend to explore in this work.Key-words : Maïssa Bey, algerian francophone literature, fictionnalisation of the history, individual identity, collective idendity.

Signification of African cultural identity, individual African identity and performance in Mathematics among some standard nine African pupils in Mangaung high schools

Mahlomaholo, Geoffrey Mahlomaholo January 1998 (has links)
Doctor Educationis / This study investigates how two groups of African pupils, namely the low and high performers in standard 9 mathematics classes in some high schools in Mangaung, construct meaning of their African cultural, individual African identity and performance in mathematics respectively. The observation underpinning this investigation is that social structural factors have not gained much attention in research as bases for explaining differentiated performance in mathematics, hence this study. To arrive at the findings mentioned below, the study used three quantitative instruments namely Mboya's Self-Description Inventory II (MSDI-II), Rotter's I-E scale and Tuekman's Mathematics Attitude Scale (MAS). Four hundred pupils who constituted the sample that responded to these questionnaires were controlled as to confounding variables like, gender, social class, exposure to mathematics and future aspirations relating to this subject. MSDI-II and Rotter's I-E Scale accessed data relating to signification of African individual identity while MAS and one of MSDI-Il's subscale, Maths Ability were 'triangulated' to access data relating to signification of performance in Mathematics. To triangulate findings on these two variables as well as to allow the sampled pupils' voices to be heard, discourse analysis was conducted on the open interviews with the two groups of low and high performing pupils in their respective schools. This qualitative approach also enabled the study to access information relating to signification of African Cultural Identity. No quantitative instrument was found suitable for this purpose. Although the study is careful not to make strong causal inferences between meaning construction (signification) and performance, the results show that (i) low performers are not sure about whether they are Africans or not since according to them African cultural identity implies an obsolete and primitive way of doing things. They are unable to identify with this. High performers see African Cultural Identity as involving lived experiences which challenge them to transform their despised status as Africans (ii) Low performers are not as positive as high performers about Africanness (individual identity) and (iii) they are also not positively inclined towards mathematics and their own ability to perform well therein, while high performers are very positive as they see doing well in mathematics as an act of struggle that would enable them to improve their social standing and that of other Africans. On the basis of the above the study is able to conclude that low performers construct meaning of the mentioned factors in agreement with the dominant discourses that see Africanness as being primitive, incompetent and unable to adequately comprehend the intricacies of modem day subjects like mathematics. High performers on the other hand tend to contest this negative definitions about what it means to be an African (identity, culture and performance in mathematics). They are thus positioned within counter-hegemonic ideology and discourses in as far as their meaning construction is concerned. Grounded on the above findings and conclusions, the study recommends that efforts should not be spared to enable the low performers (and/or pupils at risk of failing) to adopt positive meaning making strategies of high performers. These strategies may be accompanied by enhanced positive feelings about self and what one is capable of, which may in tum also impact positively on performance in mathematics, in particular. The research further argues that this goal may be achieved through curriculum enrichment, guidance, counselling and teaching, couched in the framework of African Renaissance. Therefore further research needs to be conducted that will elaborate clearly (i) what the implications of African Renaissance are on education, teaching, learning and mathematics curriculum in particular, (ii) what are the most effective means of transferring high performers' strategies of meaning construction to the low performers in the context of African Renaissance and (iii) how to strengthen and further sustain the positive meaning making strategies among high performers. Recommendations relating to curriculum enrichment in the context of Curriculum 2005 and Outcomes Based Counselling are also made as well as suggestions for future relevant research based on the concepts generated in this research.
