The Dying Dreamer - Architecture of Parallel Realities

Zimm, Malin January 2003 (has links)
The objective of this licentiate thesis is to investigatearchitectural experience and creation in virtual space and itsrepresentational problems. The thesis comprises three articlespublished during the years 2001-2003, and a website,www.arch.kth.se/~zimm. The articles investigate architecture as a transgressivestate between the virtual worlds of imagination and thedomestic interior, introducing obsessive dreambuilding as amethod of negotiating material fictions in real space. The mainrepresentative of this kind of architectural activity is thefictional character Baron des Esseintes in Joris-KarlHuysmans´ novel À Rebours (1884). Together with thearchitectural transformations created by the architect Sir JohnSoane and the artists Kurt Schwitters and Gregor Schneider, theprojects share and develop the theme of extreme individualityand explore the architectural imagination at work in the mindof the obsessive dreambuilder. These architects of parallelrealities create operative fields of artificiality andimagination, where architectural space splits into differentontological states, providing fields for observation ofperceptional and representational problems. Keywords:Architecture, Against Nature/À Rebours,Artifice, Artificiality, Domestic interior, Dream, Experience,Fiction, Hypertext, Huysmans, Imagination, Individuality,Interactivity, Interface, Obsession, Obsessive dreambuilding,Perception, Representation, Schwitters, Schneider, Soane,Symbolism, Virtual Reality / NR 20140805

Vývoj identity v dílech Akata Witch and Akata Warrior od Nnedi Okorafor / Identity Development in Akata Witch and Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor

Váňa, František January 2022 (has links)
This thesis explores the development of individuality in Nigerian books for young adults, Akata Witch and Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor. For that, the literary concepts of young adult literature and the heroic journey (monomyth) is used. This thesis aims to prove that the heroic journey framework may be applied to young adult literature, primarily concerning the formation of identity resulting a certain correlation between the two types of narrative. Based on the description of concepts of literary theory, such as the Other, described by Robyn McCallum, and the individual constitutive elements of the heroic journey, in the theoretical part, the analysis from both vantage points and subsequent correlation between them is described in the practical part. The two books that are analysed are described from the point of three major concepts of young adult literature and all twenty six steps of the heroic journey, based on Campbell and other literary theorists. Based on this analysis, it is concluded that there is a certain correlation between the two narrative frameworks. It is especially similar concerning the growth of individuality of its protagonists. Despite there being a correlation among the two types of narrative, young adult literature and the heroic journey, certain elements do not have...

Elementární architektura / Elementy výuky architektury / Primary Architecture / Teaching Architecture Elements

Juřicová, Magdaléna Unknown Date (has links)
The thesis addresses the connection of the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Fine Arts in the newly designed building. Both faculties are defined primarily by practical creation and corresponding elementary teaching spaces - studios. From these basic elements literally grows the final form of the school. The design process itself is accompanied by constant changes and the search for adequate spatial expression for individual functions of the school. The final solution is the result of gradual rationalisation, finding certainties and sticking points in the proposal. In the end, the barest, most elemental, is crystallized from a multitude of variations and reflections on space.

Kris, alienation och autenticitet i Lev Sestovs filosofi / Crisis, Alienation and Authenticity in Lev Shestov’s Philosophy

Eriksson, Lars Douglas January 2017 (has links)
In this study of Lev Shestov, the biographical method is used to explain his philosophy. The grave crisis or nervous breakdown Shestov went through caused a total transformation of his - convictions and values. It was probably this drama that led to his repudiation of the common life and traditional philosophy with its emphasis on reason, knowledge, and ethics in favour of an extreme individualism and religious transcendence. The aim of the dissertation is to examine, amongst the great number of philosophers and writers Shestov analysed, mainly those in his view “marginal thinkers”, who were of the greatest interest to him – Fyodor Dostoevsky, Lev Tolstoy, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Luther, and Søren Kierkegaard. On the basis of this analysis the character of Shestov’s philosophy is defined. According to Shestov, like his own crisis, the crises that these thinkers experienced occasioned a total transformation of their convictions and values. Šestov does not let his life find complete expression in his philosophy. Instead he projects his crisis into the five thinkers’ crises and philosophy. To characterize the previous and new modes of thinking, the concepts of alienation (degeneration, degradation, depravity) and authenticity (deliverance from alienation) are used. Shestov’s judgment of the consistency of the five thinkers’ new attitudes is presented, i.e. deliverance from the common life with its emphasis on rational eternal truths and moralism. Authentic life is in Shestov’s opinion the from the individual’s everyday life concealed experience of despair in extreme situations. This constitutes a grave crisis that leads to the repudiation of all hitherto held convictions and cherished hopes. The contrast between the Russian philosopher’s personal, (after his crisis) mainly tranquil, harmonious life and his philosophy is glaring. Analyzing the five thinkers, Shestov finds that they did not persevere with their new convictions, instead they complied with the by everybody accepted and everywhere valid truths. Shestov’s “theoretical”, uncompromising and consistent stance on one side and the lack of these characteristics with the aforementioned thinkers on the other side, to a great extent places Shestov in another category than these. In Shestov’s view freedom is in the region of tragedy, which nobody enters on his own will and in the incomprehensible trust in a capricious, “inhuman” God. According to Shestov, only the philosopher, who derives his thinking from a situation, where he experiences extreme despair and hopelessness, can claim to be a true philosopher. /
Examinator: docent Julie Hansen; Uppsala universitet

M'Bama, Dimitri 01 1900 (has links)
Abstract : This thesis studies the notion of resistance in the works of Simone Weil (1909-1943) and Michel Foucault (1926-1984). It deals more precisely with two technologies of the self, ascetism and mystic. As individualism and depoliticization seem to characterize “late capitalist” societies, our goal is to present some “counter-conducts” that could foster and even re-create common lifeforms. Under certain conditions, we support the idea that these technologies can be of great support in the permanent and transversal struggles of our times, while offering a praxeological model that doesn’t match the capitalism generic set of values. Through skills such as reading, writing, love or friendship, and a reinforced attention to the world, the technologies of the self depicted by Weil and Foucault could be described as a first act of resistance that can lead to deeper and greater structural changes. In a dialectical way, the structures resulting of these practices also must favorize the emergence of an “anti-discipline”. Regarding to these elements, Weil’s mystic and Foucault’s asceticism look like attempts to put permanent revolution in practice and propose an interesting alternative to the communist model. The goal of this thesis is therefore to analyze some ways of deconstructing and/or recreating a “self” that currently represents a coercive and oppressive force. More generally, it aims to create a discussion between two thinkers that are rarely studied together, and to draw some parallels with anarchist and post-colonial thoughts to show how much all these movements share.

[pt] ESCOLHA AMOROSA NA CONJUGALIDADE CONTEMPORÂNEA: O ENCONTRO DE DUAS SUBJETIVIDADES / [en] LOVE CHOICE IN CONTEMPORARY CONJUGALITY: THE MEETING OF TWO SUBJECTIVITIES

ANA CLAUDIA DE JESUS VASCONCELOS 05 December 2019 (has links)
[en] The present dissertation aimed to investigate the motivations involved in the process of love choice in contemporary conjugality. It is being presented in the form of two articles. In the first one, we analyzed how the dimensions of individuality and conjugality affect marital satisfaction; in the second, the results concerning the repercussions of the family of origin in the choice of the spouse and in the conjugal interaction were discussed. A qualitative research was carried out, in which four men and four women, with ages between 22 and 49, married or in a stable union, for at least two years, without children, were interviewed. To analyze the data the content analysis method was used in its categorial aspect, as proposed by Bardin (2011). From the evaluation of the material two categories of analysis emerged: love choice and marital satisfaction. It was found out that the results point to the conjugality of the parents as a model for the marriage of the offsprings. The study also observes that the appreciation of individual freedom, the experience of conjugal intimacy and the flexibility to deal with individual and conjugal dimensions are promoters of conjugal satisfaction.

Patrick, Glenn Henry 11 1900 (has links)
In this study the origin and development of democracy in education through the ages is traced in terms of a historico-educational examination of the ideas and practices of about ten educationists. The new outcomes-based education and learning approach in South Africa is also examined. The educationists are inter alia: • Plato (427-347 BC) • Marcus Fabius Quintilian (35-100 AD) • Aurelius Augustine (354-430 AD) • Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536 AD) • John Amos Comenius (1592-1670) • John Locke (1632-1704) • Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) • Maria Montessori (1870-1952) • John Dewey (1859-1952) • Paulo Freire (1921-1997) It was found that democracy in educational theory and practice was addressed, established and developed since ancient times (the ancient Greeks) right up to the present. Finally, the educational philosophy and practices of these educationists as well as the outcomes-based educational approach in South Africa are examined in terms of their essential democratic features and recommendations are made regarding the present education system in South Africa. / Educational Studies / M.
