Personalised ontology learning and mining for web information gathering

Tao, Xiaohui January 2009 (has links)
Over the last decade, the rapid growth and adoption of the World Wide Web has further exacerbated user needs for e±cient mechanisms for information and knowledge location, selection, and retrieval. How to gather useful and meaningful information from the Web becomes challenging to users. The capture of user information needs is key to delivering users' desired information, and user pro¯les can help to capture information needs. However, e®ectively acquiring user pro¯les is di±cult. It is argued that if user background knowledge can be speci¯ed by ontolo- gies, more accurate user pro¯les can be acquired and thus information needs can be captured e®ectively. Web users implicitly possess concept models that are obtained from their experience and education, and use the concept models in information gathering. Prior to this work, much research has attempted to use ontologies to specify user background knowledge and user concept models. However, these works have a drawback in that they cannot move beyond the subsumption of super - and sub-class structure to emphasising the speci¯c se- mantic relations in a single computational model. This has also been a challenge for years in the knowledge engineering community. Thus, using ontologies to represent user concept models and to acquire user pro¯les remains an unsolved problem in personalised Web information gathering and knowledge engineering. In this thesis, an ontology learning and mining model is proposed to acquire user pro¯les for personalised Web information gathering. The proposed compu- tational model emphasises the speci¯c is-a and part-of semantic relations in one computational model. The world knowledge and users' Local Instance Reposito- ries are used to attempt to discover and specify user background knowledge. From a world knowledge base, personalised ontologies are constructed by adopting au- tomatic or semi-automatic techniques to extract user interest concepts, focusing on user information needs. A multidimensional ontology mining method, Speci- ¯city and Exhaustivity, is also introduced in this thesis for analysing the user background knowledge discovered and speci¯ed in user personalised ontologies. The ontology learning and mining model is evaluated by comparing with human- based and state-of-the-art computational models in experiments, using a large, standard data set. The experimental results are promising for evaluation. The proposed ontology learning and mining model in this thesis helps to develop a better understanding of user pro¯le acquisition, thus providing better design of personalised Web information gathering systems. The contributions are increasingly signi¯cant, given both the rapid explosion of Web information in recent years and today's accessibility to the Internet and the full text world.

Exploring the information-seeking behaviour of internationally educated nurses (IENs) in Saskatchewan

Kumaran, Mahalakshmi, Chipanshi, Mary January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: Introduction: To explore the information seeking behavior of Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) and to investigate their exposure to libraries and library training in both their home countries and after being hired in Saskatchewan. Methods: This two-phase multi-method project was carried out in Saskatchewan, Canada. A questionnaire was developed based on survey instruments used in previously conducted studies on the topic. Librarians in two academic institutions assisted with validation of the survey. In Phase 1, data were collected via an online questionnaire from IENs in three health regions: Saskatoon, Regina, and Sunrise. In Phase 2, the study was expanded to IENs in all the health regions in the province. The same questionnaire from Phase 1 was used during telephone interviews with participants. Results: A total of 17 IENs responded (Phase 1, n = 9, Phase 2, n = 8). Results show that IENs, although interested in looking for information for their practice, are hindered by a lack of knowledge of how and where to seek relevant clinical information as well as a lack of library training. As a result, their main source of information is the Internet (Google). Discusion: Despite barriers such as time to information seeking, results revealed that given the opportunity IENs would like to receive library training to enhance their information seeking skills.

Patientens behov av information och kunskap vid diabetes typ 2 : En undersökande studie om informations- och kunskapsbehovet utifrån kön, HbA1c, ålder, utbildning och duration / Patients needs for information and knowledge in type 2 diabetes : An explorative study about the needs for information and knowledge based on gender, HbA1c, age, education and duration

Nederberg, Louise, Dzibalov, Timur January 2013 (has links)
Background Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in Sweden and the rest of the world. In type 2 diabetes self-care is an important part of the treatment and knowledge is needed to manage that. The nursing profession comprises to provide patients with information and knowledge - this is done through patient education. Several studies describe how information and knowledge is perceived by patients and the most suitable methods to pass information and knowledge on. However there is a lack of tools that measures patients existing knowledge and how they value information. Aim The aim of this study is to investigate how need for information and knowledge in diabetes type 2 varies by gender, HbA1c, age, education and duration, and to identify questions where the need for information and knowledge is the highest and the lowest. Methods The study is based on a quantitative survey designed by The Toronto Informational Needs Questionnaire - Breast Cancer and is analyzed using the data from 86 patients. Questions from this survey have been processed in a software called Statistical Package for the Social Sciences and the result is presented as descriptive statistics. The theoretical starting point for the study is the Lazarus and Folkman`s theory. Results There is a need for more information as well as knowledge in all of the groups studied. Differences between the groups were discerned and the groups that ranked the needs for information and knowledge highest were women and people who have had diabetes type2 for more than 11 years. Men rank the importance of information lower and they consider themselves to a greater extent having the necessary information. Questions where information is considered very important concern medical issues. Knowledge of how social issues would be handled; were ranked as the lowest. Discussions Searching for information is one way to handle the situation that arises when one gets ill. How requirements vary among different demographic groups, such as gender, age education, HbA1c and duration? How do patients evaluate their knowledge, and in which areas do gaps in information and knowledge exist?

Loza Aguirre, Edison Fernando 27 March 2015 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the question of how to enable decision-making to adopt Strategic Scanning (S.Scan). This work was motivated by an institutional request, reoriented by the findings from our exploratory study and supported by literature lack. This document follows a multi-paper model in which each connected study contributes to answer our main research inquiry. Our first study, Chapter 2, allowed us to understand that institutional pressures have an influence into the mental adoption of S.Scan. Chapter 3 and 4 focus into trial and allow the improvement of Target method aiding the identification of information needs for S.Scan. In addition, these improvements let to introduce two new concepts to S.Scan, helping practitioners identify their scan priorities. These studies are strongly linked, on one side, Chapter 3 contributes to identify the stakeholders and topics likely to represent information needs for managers in a particular context; on the other side, Chapter 4 combines the previous information with temporal considerations and a self-perceived anticipatory capacity within a meeting room system with the aim to facilitate S.Scan targeting and identifying scan priorities. In Chapter 5, we studied the interactions in collective targeting meetings in order to understand the contributions of such activities to develop organizational absorptive capacity. This work allowed the understanding of the main themes to be negotiated in order to ease the activity of targeting and to produce results, which represent the information needs of the organization as a whole. Finally, we present our: theoretical, research, and practice contributions.

ABSTRACT The informational behavior of users is a recurring theme in the field of information science. Analyze human behavior involves retrieving the structures of interdisciplinarity to justify the confluence of themes, such as ' behavior ', ' needs ', ' information ' and ' users '. To engender the discussions of this research, structured-if arguments grounded in applied studies in the field of Psychology traditional behaviour source to substantiate the analyses the needs and search of content in information systems. To consider the said prerogatives, the thesis aimed to analyze how the informational behavior of advisors of the offices in the building of political platforms interferes for members of the Legislative Assembly of Bahia, from the social demands. The specific objectives were to: (a) profiling the aides of representatives to identify aspects of the informational behavior; (b) map information selection criteria and propositions coming from users/citizens, from the activities of parliamentarians ' offices and advisors; (c) identify possible competent legal norms to guide the activities of political advisors. The methodological contours allowed position method of procedure (monographic/case study), the level of research (descriptive) and the techniques and research instruments (form, observation and questionnaire. Suitable to studies of behavior, the coach was the critical incident technique, understood as a set of procedures for the collection of data based on observations. The results indicated that the offices of parliamentary offices presented profiles approximate, not interfering in users/citizens participation opportunities and obtaining information, not revealing specific frameworks relevant to the groups observed. Informational behavior analyses of assessors pointed to targeted equivalences evidenced in questionnaire research, without interference or correlations in the interaction opportunities. The discussions confirmed the proposition of the thesis on the informational behavior model, oriented and conducive political institutions, presented adaptations/guidelines to parliamentary offices in search, recovery process and selection of demands coming from users/citizens, as well as compliance with legal norms in political offices orchestrated. The final considerations suggest the models of user behavior developed by scholars of the CI as essential prerogative to elaboration and proposal of informational behavior model of parliamentary advisors enrolled in political environments. Provision of Library Services to disadvantaged children in rural areas of the Limpopo Province

Mahwasane, Nkhangweni Patricia 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to identify the types of library services available in rural areas of Thohoyandou in order to recommend appropriate library services to disadvantaged children in rural areas of the Limpopo Province. Data were collected by means of structured questionnaires in a survey. The problems experienced in rendering library services to children, the factors influencing rural children's information use, and the role that school libraries play in meeting the needs of rural children were investigated. The findings show that rural children's information needs are primarily related to homework assignments. Teachers and learners approach people for information rather than making use of library resources for this purpose. This is due to the fact that most rural schools do not have libraries. Materials are stored in classrooms and storerooms. The existing book stock seems to be outdated, disorganised and inaccessible. Library service rendering is neglected. Most teacher-librarians are not professionally trained to render user services and to teach children information skills. Teachers, teacher-librarians, policy makers and administrators in rural schools seem to be indifferent to providing these services to children. / Information Science / M.A. (Information Science)

The representation of the information needs aiming the retrieval of relevant information has demanded from the areas of Information Organization and Retrieval the development of theoretical and instrumental models which may help in the procedures of analysis, synthesis, representation and retrieval of the documentary contents, contributing both to the theoretical sedimentation of the area and to the professional training. In this context, the perception of the demand of the information needs of a users’ community becomes an important aspect to be considered by the indexer in the process of treatment of documentary contents of an information system. This way, one proposes an investigation about the representation of the information needs in the user’s perspective, in order to identify conceptual elements and models that may provide the indexing professional with subsidies for the treatment of information of documentary contents, turned to the demand of the users’ community of an information system. By means of an exploratory approach of theoretical investigative nature and a methodology of analysis of the theoretical search models of Tom Wilson and David Ellis, this research aims at contributing so the indexer may be able to improve the representation of the documentary contents and enlarge the vision about the demand of the users’ community. The results obtained signal that, for the treatment of documentary contents turned to the demand, the option of the socio-cognitive approach demonstrates to meet in a more satisfactory manner the complexities that involve the user in his/her social dimension and, consequently, his/her information needs.

ABSTRACT This research aims to analyze the information literacy of the elderly in use of digital technologies. Therefore, it adopts as specific objectives: a) identify the informational needs of the elderly; b) verify how the elderly use diverse technological resources and informational sources in the digital space; and, c) examine the cognitive, situational and affective aspects related, respectively, to knowledge, to know-how and to know-agency of information literacy. Part of the assumption that the information literacy surpasses approaches preoccupied only with the problem-solving skills in formal activities, constituting a critical factor for the accomplishment of other activities, which emphasize different natures of information. As for the methodological procedures, the research is based on the qualitative approach and on the exploratory and descriptive method. For data collection, it favors face-to-face interaction by conducting interviews with elderly using digital technologies. The technique used for data interpretation was content analysis. Through the mapping of information literacy, it is highlighted that the elderly interviewed, for the most part, show interest in continuing to learn about digital technologies and their tools. The results of the research indicate that, despite the difficulties encountered, respondents are curious about technological advances and encourage the desire to learn more about the available tools. Although the elderly sometimes present some fear and resistance to the new, it is worth noting that in many other moments there is a sense of motivation and interest in learning, always with a view to achieving independence in tasks associated with technology. In this way, it concludes that the use of digital technologies can provide greater autonomy for the elderly, contributing positively to their quality of life, and cooperate with other researches on the development of information literacy in digital contexts.
