Atlas of Athenian inscriptions : a book of drawings of writings and writings on drawings

Avramidis, Konstantinos January 2018 (has links)
This thesis proposes a critical exchange between architecture and graffiti. Graffiti in Athens plays a key role in the expression of Greek tensions making this city an ideal place for developing such an exchange. The author acts in a three-fold manner in this research: as architectural designer, one with an impulse to survey by drawing and capable of grasping the matrix of the surfaces upon which graffiti finds an expression; as graffiti writer, somebody with some practical experience as graffitist hence partially equipped to decode the graffiti matrix placed on any given architectural matrix; and as writer on graffiti, who is interested in bringing together and working between the architectural and graffiti matrices to reveal their convergences, deviations and interdependences, and, in so doing, expose the hidden spatiality of graffiti writing. Stemming from this peculiar triple positioning, this book promotes a new situating of Athenian inscriptions. The thesis is presented as an Atlas of Athenian Inscriptions, a book of drawings of writings and writings on drawings. The Atlas offers, in both drawn and written form, a close study of four situations in which graffiti has been recorded. The thesis regards a recent significant graffiti Exhibition – in which the author is actively implicated by being invited into it as a graffiti writer and writer on graffiti – as a starting point, as its situation zero. By de-situating graffiti from its original urban and political context whilst placing it onto the gallery surfaces, this thesis argues that the Exhibition undermines graffiti’s critical potency and has transformed graffiti into an aesthetic object. However, perhaps paradoxically, presenting graffiti as an empty gesture, the Exhibition nonetheless raises questions concerning the situating role of graffiti. By including it in the Atlas together with the following more overt surface ruptures in political edifices, the Exhibition is framed as an equally political situation. The other three situations, all in Athens’ city centre, reflect three important periods in local political history and are emblematic in that they are the epicentres of historical ruptures during which they are extensively graffitied: the former Nazi Detention Centre which operates during the Axis occupation (1941-1944); the Athens Polytechnic that plays a pivotal role in the student uprising against the Greek Military Junta (1967-1974); and the Bank of Greece HQ building which is a site of recurring political expression in contemporary crisis (2010-2015). The Atlas indexes graffiti and related information from the city of Athens, the systematic organisation of which creates different graffiti-related matrices allowing us to make sense of, navigate in and reconstruct the Athenian graffiti landscape through characteristic surface environments. By placing different political situations in the same set with the Exhibition, the thesis aims to give critical voice to how graffiti is perceived. By resituating (graffiti) images, the Atlas restores broken and creates new links between them and their surfaces whilst revealing not only the spatiality of graffiti in Athens but also the spatiality of architecture of Athens as a recurring tension between the matrices of dissensus and consensus. The thesis deconstructs the mythology that architecture represents consensus and graffiti dissensus, since each is embedded in the other. Ultimately, by carefully considering graffiti’s situating character and graphic articulation, this research promotes rupture to the smoothing of its political asperity attempted by architecture, institutions and those writing on graffiti that seek to restrain it.

Análise da interdependência dos retornos e da série de volatilidade do índice s&p500 e os principais índices mundiais sob o enfoque da regressão quantílica / Interdependence analysis between returns and volatility of the s&p500 index and the others major financial indexes under the scope of the quantile regression

Costa, Alexandre Silva da 06 March 2014 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Since the origins of modern finance theory, interdependence is an issue between assets as the search for diversification ends with a better portfolio. Many studies and many approaches have been given to answer to the questions of correlation, covariance and interdependence but the subprime crises and the almost meltdown of financial markets throughout the globe, proved that portfolios were not efficiently diversified. The concept of diversification and the risk measures did not prevent from hundreds of companies worldwide to go belly up. This work aims to give another approach to interdependence, the quantile regression, including a volatility measure of the American Market regressed with other international major players grouped by their geographic region. This work stars in 2000 and ends in 2012, collecting data through four major events: the Nasdaq burst, the 9/11, the Subprime and the European crises. Our findings are: countries geographically close to the US have display higher levels of interdependence; European countries are in majority also highly integrated with the US; and lastly but more importantly, integration is increasing.

Correa, Paloma Morais January 2010 (has links)
The International Human Rights Movement challenges the classic concept of state sovereignty. On the other hand, claims on sovereignty represent an obstacle to the universalisation and regionalisation of human rights. This dissertation undertakes a qualitative analysis on jurisprudence, literature and documents concerning the development of mechanisms to protect the sovereignty of states in the Inter-American System of Human Rights. The study indicates that the mechanisms of state sovereignty have been used by the Inter-American System in a more cautious fashion than by the European System. Nevertheless, the impreciseness in the application of admissibility requirements for international claims represents an obstacle to the regionalisation of human rights in the American continent.

Emerging Adults and Their Helicopter Parents: Communication Quality as Mediator between Affect and Stress

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: With the establishment of the emerging adult developmental period and the rise of helicopter parents, attachment theory provides foundation for conceptualizing the continued involvement of helicopter parents in their emerging adults’ emotion regulation processes. This study utilized dyadic data from 66 emerging adult children and their helicopter parents to examine the association of helicopter parent-emerging adult communication in mitigating the associations between experiences of affect and stress. Specifically, the purpose of the present study was to use dyadic data to examine how communication within the helicopter parent-emerging adult relationship associates with emerging adults’ ability to regulate experiences of negative and positive affect. Both associations within the emerging adult and helicopter parent individually (actor effects) and how helicopter parents impact construct associations for emerging adults’ (partner effects) were considered. Two multilevel mediation models using Actor-Partner Interdependence Models were conducted to assess the relations between affect, stress, and helicopter parent-emerging adult communication quality for negative and positive affect separately. The positive direct effect between negative affect and stress was statistically significant for emerging adults, but not for helicopter parents, suggesting that, for emerging adults, higher perceptions of negative affect were associated with higher levels of stress. The direct and indirect effects for the mediation model examining actor and partner effects between negative affect, communication quality, and stress were non-significant for both emerging adults and helicopter parents. The direct effect between positive affect and stress was statistically significant for helicopter parents but not for emerging adults; however, the directionality of the significant association was positive and not as hypothesized. Finally, the direct and indirect effects for the mediation model examining actor and partner effects between positive affect, communication quality, and stress were non-significant for emerging adults and helicopter parents. Considerations for future studies examining aspects of attachment within emotion regulation for the helicopter parent-emerging adult relationship and the importance of considering relationship characteristics, such the relational characteristics of social support and conflict, are discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Counseling Psychology 2017

This paper is arisen from my own practices and sights in a private franchised school in the State of São Paulo. The investigative proposal allowed to see how interdependent tensions in the classroom space and time, (organizational structure, presuppositions, values, work environment, work methodology, classes schedule, subjects, school name, school head office, and specially the franchised material used), of a private franchised school give tools to the teacher in order to assist them in their activity comprehension. How these relations are constructed in interrelations net and how the teacher sees if the relational pedagogical practice in his/her activity can be understood in those tensions, what features in the franchised school requirements. In regard to social theoretical reference this paper has focused on Norbert Elias´ literature, with studies about interrelation category between subject and society with a view to net of functions in an interdependent way. This is a qualitative-based research, which intended to collect and evaluate data questionnaires that were applied for Portuguese, especially in writing techniques, teachers, who work with ending high school classes, and vestibular-guided courses, at a private franchised school. The teaching indication was defined due to the great number of classes teachers have in the high school.

Fagundes, Paloma de Mattos January 2012 (has links)
The expansion of the global bioenergy market is regarded as a promising alternative for some countries, especially the potential producers and suppliers of raw materials, as in the case of Brazil. The insertion of ethanol in the energy matrix from different countries producers and consumers will be a complex phenomenon with different types of interdependent relations. This paper aims to analyze the international relations of interdependence among Brazil and other countries producers and consumers – real or potential – of the ethanol biofuel and their implications on the productive chain of this fuel in Brazil. To study this process of interdependence in international relations, this work explores the Theory of Complex Interdependence proposed by Robert Keohane and Joseph Nye Samuel Junior (2001) and the Game Theory of John Von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern (1944). It was performed a quali-quantitative, research through a documentary analysis with the use of QDA Miner ® software and the application of two questionnaires. For the document analysis, 101 classified documents were used, as international acts of biofuels and ethanol among 2002 and 2011, present in the databases of the Brazilian government. The first questionnaire, answered by 46 teachers and doctors who work or conduct research in ethanol, agribusiness and/or international relations areas, intended to identify the keywords related to the political, economic, social and environmental dimensions and techniques in the ethanol sector. The second questionnaire, answered by 21 representatives of stakeholders in the productive chain of Brazilian ethanol, aimed to analyze, through the logic of the Game Theory, the strategic behavior of actors in a condition of strategic interaction. The analysis of the results shows that the main actors of the interdependent relations with Brazil in the ethanol sector are The United States, with a high degree of interdependence, Europe with an average degree of interdependence and China with a low degree of interdependence. The dimensions with higher performance in relations of interdependence, both from the point of view of international acts as stakeholders, were the political and economic dimensions, followed by technical and socio-environmental dimensions. Thus, it is considered that the strategic behavior observed in relations of interdependence demonstrated that in relations between Brazil and United States, Brazil tends to earn a little, while the United States tends to earn a lot. Relations between Brazil and Europe show that Brazil tends to lose a lot, while Europe tends to earn a lot, and in relations between Brazil and China, Brazil tends to earn a little, while China neither lose nor earn. Therefore, regardless of existing interdependence in relations among the actors, whether real or potential producers and consumers, all the countries should work together to strengthen the industry, since the entire global system will be benefiting, both in the political, economic, social or technical sectors. Technological efforts for efficiency gains related to the sustainable growth of production, creation of sectoral policies, which offer security and infrastructure for its production, reduction of tariffs on the product in all over the world, transformation of ethanol into a global commodity with a large number of countries buying and selling this product are some of the actions that could make ethanol takes an increasingly strategic position on the diversification in the energy matrix.

Lopes, Maria Isabel Nunes January 2014 (has links)
This research investigates how the media, understood here as all its technologies, is central in the construction of a symbolic cultural capital for the politicians. The visibility that builds credibility and promotes political carreers is the same that destroys them with power scandals. In an era of culture and media visibility, the information enviroment is less controllable due to the proliferation of different forms of media and its communication networks, making it difficult for the politicians to both hide their activities and predict the consequences of media exposure. The significance of the personal and political credibility is one of the variables of the symbolic capital, which is based on both voters and other politicians’s trust. The main aim of this research is to demonstrate the relationship developed between media and politicians during the construction of the mediatized political fact, defined herein as the reported fact. It also aims at identifying and analyzing the facts narrated in interviews with politicians from the federal, state and municipal spheres, both in current assignment and expecting the next elections. The intention is to foster critical analysis on the communication phenomenon as a power that is decoupled from the other legitimately constituted branches of power. For the data interpretation, the methodological framework of Depth Hermeneutics was used, taking into consideration the historical and social context of the politicians and the media, discursive analysis and reinterpretation of the data. The results demonstrate an aparent interdependence, since the applied strategies converge to the backroom deals, excluding the people and the public sphere from any possibility of participation. The research detected assimetric power relationships to maintain dominance, which caracterizes a strategic use of ideologies, such as legitimation, reification and dissimulation. The results prove the necessity of broad studies on the relationships that compose the mediatized political fact as a way to create access, knowledge and participation of the public sphere while political originated power.

Political effects of economic interdependence among South American members of the Alliance of the Pacific / La Alianza del Pacífico y los efectos políticos de la interdependencia económica

Morales Giraldo, Juan Francisco 20 July 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the unintended political effects of economic interdependence among South American members of the Alliance of the Pacific by tracing the evolution of their mutual trade in relation to the intensity of their military competitive dynamics from 2001 to 2015. Two measurement instruments are use: an intra-regional trade index based on commerce data, and a coordination index based on arms purchases. The question is if the formation of the Alliance and trade relations now embedded in it have had any effect on the cooperation-conflict political balance. Issues concerning the method are discuss as well as the implications of the research for the intertheory debate. Last section is dedicate to discuss briefly the historical understanding of regional conflicts and normative aims of regional integration.

Human right to water and conventionality control / Derecho humano al agua y control de convencionalidad

Martínez, Adriana N., Defelippe, Oscar E. 10 April 2018 (has links)
Humanity faces the challenge of achieving the sustainability of water resources supply for the satisfaction of human needs and ofensuring the sustainability of the natural ecosystems for the achievement of sustainable human development and the quality of life of present and future generations. For this reason the recognition of access to water as a Human Right has fundamental significance. We proceed to analyze the international instruments that provide content and legal basis to the human right to water and the obligations of States. In this context, we deal with the constitutional reception of human right to water in Argentina in the constitutional reform of 1994 and the control of conventionality as guarantor of access to water, which has led to different domestic courts to consider cases in which a violation ofthe right to water was proved.

Response Thresholds Predict Domestic Labor Conflict and Labor Allocation in Marital Dyads

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: Guided by Alberts, Tracy and Trethewey's (2011) integrated theory of the division of domestic labor, this dissertation examined the influence of domestic labor response threshold (i.e., the point at which one is sufficiently disturbed by a task undone so as to feel compelled to attend to it) on domestic labor performance and domestic labor conflict. Three-hundred-ten heterosexual participants (155 marital dyads; average marriage length of 20 years) completed an online questionnaire about their performance of household labor, household labor conflict, and response thresholds. Response thresholds were assessed using traditional verbal measures as well as two visual (i.e., photographic) measures developed for this investigation. The data were analyzed using three methods of dyadic data analysis: structural equation modeling, repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), and actor-partner interdependence models using multilevel modeling. Results indicate that the lower one's response threshold, and the higher one's partner's response threshold, the greater one's contributions to household tasks. Additionally, the lower one's response threshold, and the higher one's partner's response thresholds, the more likely the demand-withdrawal pattern is to emerge in domestic labor conflicts. Finally, mutual avoidance is more likely when one partner perceives that it is less costly to complete domestic work than to engage in conflict about it, or when one partner perceives that domestic labor is not a worthwhile or appropriate conflict topic. Contributions of this investigation include support for the integrated theory of the division of domestic labor, increased understanding of how individual differences (working in concert with actor sex) contribute to domestic labor allocation and conflict, a more sensitive measure of response threshold, and preliminary evidence of the "logics" of avoidance of domestic labor conflict. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Communication 2012
