Building Bridges through Music: A Recording and Performance Collaboration with Adult Composers, Young Soloists, and Collegiate Band Accompaniment

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Although music is regarded as a universal language, it is rare to find musicians of different ages, ability levels, and backgrounds interacting with each other in collaborative performances. There is a dearth of mixed-ability-level wind band and string orchestra repertoire, and the few pieces that exist fail to celebrate the talents of the youngest and least-experienced performers. Composers writing music for school-age ensembles have also been excluded from the collaborative process, rarely communicating with the young musicians for whom they are writing. This project introduced twenty-nine compositions into the wind band and string orchestra repertoire via a collaboration that engaged multiple constituencies. Students of wind and string instruments from Phoenix’s El Sistema-inspired Harmony Project and the Tijuana-based Niños de La Guadalupana Villa Del Campo worked together with students at Arizona State University and composers from Canada, Finland, and across the United States to learn and record concertos for novice-level soloists with intermediate-level accompaniment ensembles. This project was influenced by the intergenerational ensembles common in Finnish music institutes. The author provides a document which includes a survey of the existing concerto repertoire for wind bands and previous intergenerational and multicultural studies in the field of music. The author then presents each of the mixed-ability concertos created and recorded in this project and offers biographical information on the composers. Finally, the author reflects upon qualitative surveys completed by the project’s participants. Most the new concertos are available to the public. This music can be useful in the development and implementation of similar collaborations of musicians of all ages and abilities. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2018

No. of bitstreams: 1 3404.pdf: 4468437 bytes, checksum: f16c7eba28bc2656f545e5415c3e1418 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-01-14 / Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais / The increase in the number of elderly in the population and increased longevity create greater opportunities for interaction with children of this overall population. Since the beginning of life children develop attitudes toward aging and older people with whom they live. The perception that progressively build is based on these relationships and are influenced by several factors. Objectived to assess the attitude toward aging of children living with elderly people with and without cognitive impairment and check on the perception of the same dementia / Alzheimer disease (AD). The study was based on the method of quantitative and qualitative research and ethical guidelines were followed. Was interviewed 54 children from 7 to 10 years of age were enrolled in five different Units of Family Health of a city of State of São Paulo who were living with at least one elderly person. The children were interviewed, was applied a questionnaire of characterization, Scale of Attitudes Toward Aging for Children and issues related to aging and dementia / AD. In the elderly living with children (n = 46) was made the characterization and applied the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Quantitative data were statistically analyzed and the qualitatives by thematic analysis. Most children were male, had nine years, was in 4° grade of Elementary School and was the granddaughter of the elderly with whom she lived. The average of child in the attitude scale was 1.59 points, one point represents the most positive attitude possible and three points more negative. The elderly were mostly female, between 60 and 64 years and mean MMSE score of 20.4 points. Most children (53.7%) live with elderly people without cognitive impairment. Significant differences was found in the areas of cognition and social relationship of the attitude scale when was compared groups of children living with elderly people with and without cognitive impairment, being that those who live with elderly with cognitive impairment have more negative attitudes in these areas. Regarding the open issues, changes in physical appearance and way of thinking have been highlighted as inherent to aging. They also emphasized the memory loss of elderly patients with whom the child lives. The vast majority of children had no knowledge about dementia/AD. Health professionals in basic attention should be attentive to multigenerational families, and within the Family Health Program to invest in strategies for gerontological education.

Literacy skills, equality of educational opportunities and educational outcomes: an international comparison

Jovicic, Sonja 09 February 2018 (has links) (PDF)
This paper assesses the role of literacy skills as an equalizer in both educational outcomes and educational opportunities. First, by linking two surveys of adult skills for 11 OECD countries (PIAAC - Survey of Adult Skills (conducted in mid-1990s) and IALS - International Adult Literacy Survey (conducted in 2011)), the relationship between performance (average literacy test scores) across countries and within-country skill inequality (dispersion in literacy test scores) is examined. Although Okun's style tradeoff could suggest that there is a tradeoff between efficiency and equality, in this analysis the opposite holds true. Countries with higher average literacy test scores have, at the same time, higher equality in literacy test scores. Second, the role of intergenerational educational mobility (one aspect of equality of opportunity) across countries on both average literacy scores and equality in literacy scores is estimated. There is a significant effect of parental educational levels on children's test scores in all countries, but there is a substantial cross-country variation in the size of the coefficients, which suggests that families play different roles in the transmission of educational skills across countries. Furthermore, this paper finds that an increase in average literacy scores (particularly, improvement in the literacy skills of the low-skilled adults) is positively associated with higher intergenerational educational mobility and higher equality of literacy test scores. Third, by decomposing differences in average literacy scores between the surveys, this paper finds that although increasing educational attainment was the primary driver behind the rise in average literacy scores, literacy scores for each educational age group declined in all countries, which may imply a decrease in educational efficiency. From a policy perspective, increases in access to education and rises in educational attainment alone (although extremely beneficial) are not enough. A focus on educational reform and better quality of education are required in order to improve educational efficiency. Additionally, family policies and an active welfare state may be necessary in order to tackle inequalities. / Series: INEQ Working Paper Series

Marques, Patricia Fett de Assuncao January 2012 (has links)
Many different factors contribute for the growth of children’s role as influential agents in the family decision-making process such as technology in its most different shapes, and how easy is for the children to manage them, besides the recent changes in demographic and household structures with a decrease of number of children per family, people having children later in life, parents working out of home, the increasing medium income population in Brazil, where this work took place and so forth. Although this phenomenon is known, there is a lot to discover and understand in terms of dynamics that comes along with it. This study seeks a deeper understanding into the specificities within each family like parental style and family structure, looking for responses about how these matters can also shape this process of intergenerational influence, specially the “Reversal Intergenerational Influence” which flows from children to their parents. Due the investigation work proposed, it was decided to conduct a qualitative research under interpretative guidance, starting from a comprehensive literature review regarding the proposed theme followed by 21 in-depth interviews conducted among families including parents and their children, tweens within 10 to 14 years old, giving a total of 57individual in-depth interviews. Among the findings the families openness to their children ´opinions tendency stands out, besides their growing participation in the whole family decision making process, from information search, and choices, until the real moment of purchase decision making. Another finding is related to children´s power, about private consumption, that means, products and services which they have direct interest on them. On the other hand, it is also already perceived the growing participation of children on purchase decision making process of expensive products and public/family products. This fact is emphasized by emotions like guilty, especially among families with absent parents (by widowhood or divorce) or due parents work absorption, creating a gap and a need for creating a compensatory mechanism. Unique child also plays an important role in this process as third-party influence as well.

Moving forwards backwards: exploring the impact of active engagement in reminiscence theatre with older adults in residential care with mild to moderate cognitive impairment

Pauluth-Penner, Trudy 01 October 2018 (has links)
This descriptive ethno-theatre case study explored the impact of intergenerational engagement through a reminiscence theatre arts initiative on the psychosocial quality of life for older adults with mild to moderate cognitive decline. Study participants were comprised of 11 adults 65 years and older residing in a dementia-specific residential care facility unit, and 13 University of Victoria Theatre students. Both qualitative and quantitative procedures were integrated into the case study. Qualitative processes consisted of older adult life history interview transcriptions, ethno-theatre field notes of theatre devising and performance processes, and post-program drama evaluations. Quantitative measures included pre- and post-administered instruments: CASP-19; Alzheimer’s Disease-related Quality of Life (ADRQL) – Revised; and older adult health perception surveys. Overall, it appears from the data that active engagement in reminiscence theatre (the process of creating and performing theatre from real life memories and stories) results in a positive impact on older adults’ well-being – increased self-esteem, elevated mood and social engagement, decreased isolation and boredom, and desire to continue with activities. This study’s findings suggest that the integration of reminiscence arts initiatives into residential care plans for older adults with mild to moderate cognitive impairment can substantially enhance psychosocial quality of life. These findings are consistent with reminiscence and life review theory in that intergenerational engagement in these processes promotes healthy aging. This study demonstrated that intergenerational connection between young and older adults through drama and storytelling activities occurred. The creative reciprocal initiatives of reminiscence arts in turn fostered a context for social and emotional engagement that appeared to reduce older adults’ isolation. / Graduate

Les organisations communautaires de femmes afro-américaines à Chicago : enjeux et stratégies de l’éducation et de l’ascension sociale / African American women’s community voluntary organizations in Chicago : issues and strategies of education and upward social mobility

Powell, Carrie 11 December 2017 (has links)
Spawning from a tradition of maintaining and extending kinship and community ties, and secondly from a tradition of activist mothering, African American women have organized within their community to solve the predicaments they face in society. From their organizing experience in the abolitionist movement as well as the early women’s movement of the 19th century and relying on the networks they established through their church work, an African American club movement formed at the turn of the 20th century. Indeed, the Black women’s club movement built upon a tradition of self-help, defined by the uplift ideology. As this thesis spans the twentieth century till today, this essay describes the strategies employed by contemporary African American women reformers, specifically the West Side chapter of the National Council of Negro Women in Chicago, who constantly adapt to the evolving needs of their community but still inherited from this legacy.Through an empowerment process, African American women seek to change the people’s consciousness and transform social institutions. It is an activism with a pragmatic edge but a political goal. Acknowledging the oppression weighing on the African American community, the strategies described in this study are strategies of resistance, with a particular interest in the resilience and the resources of Black women in the underserved communities. The focus on family issues in these associations’ approach shows a continuity with the primary preoccupations of the clubs at the turn of the century. The form of the family promoted by the association Sankofa Safe Child Initiative sheds light on a facilitated circulation of children among the African American families under study, through several generations. This “tradition” will be linked to the fosterage phenomenon, current in Africa and other parts of the world, of which the mode as well as the function will be specified, notably a strategic use of the family within the underserved African American community to face challenges in a hostile environment.

A pertença estendida de adultos na família de origem / The adults who remain with their original´s family

Renata do Nascimento Vieira Munhoz 16 February 2012 (has links)
The adults who remain with their original families are a multifactorial phenomenon, involving economic, cultural, familial and psychological factors, which generates discontentment and suffering for those who find themselves in this situation. The objective of this dissertation is the understanding of the motives, intentions and rationales that determine the prolonged stay of adults within their original families. In order to accomplish this, we used psychoanalytical theory both to aid our research design and to inform our analysis of the data collected through our fieldwork. Our interests in understanding how such adults perceive, attribute meaning to and live their everyday lives alongside their original families, and in identifying their perspectives on the future, themselves and their families have built the objectives of this study. We studied this phenomenon via semi-structured interviews with seven middle class adults from the city of São Paulo, aged between 26 and 37 years old, five women and two men, who lived with their original families in 2010. Some themes have emerged from the analysis of the interviews: family: culture, tradition, history and structure; being an adult; expectations about the future; work and salary: professional life; and relationships outside of the family. We ascertained in the family dynamic of some of our interviewees a symbiotic relationship with the mother figure, and also a precarious financial situation that hindered leaving the family home. The perspective of the future, to some, include leaving the family home in the case of a new professional/career path or marriage and, to others, it makes no sense to leave the parental home; there are some benefits in staying in the parental home, but in all interviewees there are a discomfort and a sense of failure, for not meeting familial and personal expectations

The thesis addresses a topic relevant to current social context, education for older adults, considering demographic growthand increased life expectancy in Brazil by the need of educational proposals concerning education for lifelong, mediated by the guarantee of the rights to education; It aims to analyze the gerontological activities, unveiling contributions to literacy mediated intergenerational dialogue to self-esteem and social integration of the elderly. The research has a qualitative approach as a reference, modality in action research as the main methodological procedure, and Culture circles used to work generating themes removed from the context of people surveyed and the Elderly Statute (Estatuto do Idoso). The process of literacy and lifelong formation, guided by Gerontagogical Dialogic Intergenerational, epistemological fundamentals from Paulo Freire, in the field of history and memory, among other studies converge and converse with the elements found in this investigation.Regarding the methodological approach, were used semi-structured interviews with scripts, questionnaires and participant observation; Individuals of this research are called eagles of love (the elderly), life (children), hope (grandchildren) and light (teachers). The socio-demographic data are results of the questionnaires with twenty (20) elderly (eagles love) in cutting age (60 to 85 years of age), who participate in the Intergenerational Project and revealed the social educational and economic true, result of a life story that conditioned by several reasons to remain outside the social inclusion process. How had no opportunity to study because there was no school in the locality of residence, all, without exception, changed the countryside for the urban areain search of better living conditions, especially to put their children in school, get form them as a reward and projection of dreams that could not achieve. The survey information after the interview and the activities of the culture circle, confirmed that work of this nature, mediated by Gerontological intergenerational dialogue contribute to self-esteem and social integration of older people, found in the dialogues and attitudes of the eagles, as the apex of the results. Reverberated in the construction of this thesis: the appropriation of reading and writing as a process that maximizes the relation between knowledge, reflection, action and requirement of the rights guaranteed in the Elderly Statute; digital literacy, participation, persistence and engagement in activities with joy and gestures of solidarity; personal enhancement; involvement of children and grandchildren with the improvement of family relations and change in conceptions of old age. However, this explicit need to be included in the Educational Politicsa pedagogy pledge not only insertion of old people in school and non-school contexts, as well as the inclusion in the proposed curriculum of basic education, with contents that include education and intergenerational process aging, this approach is essential that the proposals of teacher training courses, mainly pedagogy courses in, can provide the skills to work, especially in classes EJAI (Education for Youth, Adults and Elders), anchored on the contribution of Gerontological, from the new paradigms about senescence and the aging process, and thus contribute to lifelong education.

Combatentes e revolucionários: processos de socialização de jovens integrantes de organizações que buscam a preservação ou a subversão da ordem / Fighters and revolutionaries: the socialization of young members of organizations that seek to preserve or overturn the order

Ricardo de Sequeira Lugó 22 September 2014 (has links)
The research presented here had the objective of studying the socialization processes that young people are subjected to adhere to organizations that seek to preserve or overturn the order. Through interviews, field observations, analysis of documents and literature, I tried to unravel: 1) socialization processes conducted by these organizations; 2) how to design the family, emotional, professional and educational webs, in which young members were or are caught and how they compelled them to join movements that seek to preserve or overturn the order; 3) how act these organizations to enhance or mitigate its members in certain ways to feel, think, act and relate with others and with the world. I chose to study Academia da Força Aérea (AFA), an institution that forms officials for Aeronautics, one of the three Armed Forces, protective order par excellence, and Juventude Pátria Livre (JPL), marxist-leninist group subordinate to the Partido Pátria Livre (PPL), former Movimento Revolucionário 8 de Outubro (MR8), groups that stand, in the long term, the subversion of the order for the deployment of an egalitarian socialist society (ie, building of a new order). Results suggest points of convergence in the socialization of military AFA/Aeronautics and militants JPL/PPL, but also identify false similarities and differences. Convergent points are: 1) strong group identity and concern for society (sense of collectivity above the sense of individuality); 2) attachment to patriotic and nationalist values; 3) ethics given mission - mission accomplished; 4) different perception of \"volunteering\", compared to what we used in the common sense; 5) body and explicit and institutionalized ethical clothing, in the case of the military, and implicit and not institutionalized, but also noticeable, in the case of the militants; 6) endogenous recruitment; 7) strong concern with doctrine. False similarities and significant differences can also be grouped into seven points: 1) different relationships with the city; 2) education of the respondents and ancestors; 3) religion; 4) adherence to other organizations; 5) itinerant life; 6) family support; 7) sacrifices.
