"Too Good to Be True": Discursive Construction of the Ideal Girl in 20th Century Popular American Girls' SeriesJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation examines the discursive construction of the trope of the ideal girl in popular American girls' series in the twentieth century. Girls' cultural artifacts, including girls' literature series, provide sites for understanding girls' experiences and exploring girlhood itself as a socially constructed identity, yet are often overlooked due to their presumed insignificance. Simple dismissal of these texts ignores the weight of their popularity and the processes through which they reach such status. This project challenges the derisive attitude towards girls' culture and begins with the assumption that these cultural texts do ideological work and therefore require consideration. The dissertation traces the development of the ideal and non-ideal girl over time, taking into account the cultural, political, and economic factors that facilitate the production of the discourses of girlhood. I include analysis of texts from six popular American girls' series as primary texts; visual elements or media productions related to the series; and supporting historical documents such as newspapers, "expert" texts, popular parents' and girls' magazines, film; and advertising. Methodological approach incorporates elements of literary criticism and discourse analysis, combining literary, historical, and cultural approaches to primary texts and supporting documents to trace the moments of production, resistance, and response in the figure of the ideal girl. Throughout the project, I pay particular attention to the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and nationality in the figure of the ideal girl and her non-ideal counterparts. I argue that girls' series, slipping under the radar as a denigrated cultural medium, capture and perpetuate cultural anxieties around heterosexuality, whiteness and American identity, appropriate gender roles, and class mobility. These texts discipline the non-ideal girl toward the ideal, always with the expectation of failure. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Gender Studies 2013

Writing the next Chapters of our Books : Every-day resistances by Greek women in SwedenVagena, Eftychia January 2016 (has links)
This work is dedicated to exploring the possibilities of everyday knowledges and practices to re-address the issue of resistance, problematise the existing notions and create re-articulations. In what follows, I am investigating the main intersections of discrimination in the experience of the latest wave of Greek women migrants in Sweden in order to single out and analyze the ways and tools of their everyday resistance and re-existence. Grounded in the geo-politics and body-politics of knowledge this research begins with challenging the Greek crisis and migration to transgress all-encompassing categories such as crisis, migrant, woman, everyday, resistance and at the same time propose alternative ways and tropes to comprehend and handle their content. In order to reconfigure everyday resistance and expose the marginal layers between “obedience” and “disobedience”, I will unlearn and relearn the Greek history, decolonize the Greek identity, and at last reaffirm the experiential knowing through being, a knowledge that has been durably repressed.

Transição capilar : cabelos, consumo e interseccionalidade no ciberespaçoMatos, Lídia de Oliveira 25 August 2017 (has links)
The capillary transition occurs when the person stops changing the structure of the hair thread using cosmetic products based on chemical substances that give as result a straight hair, and that hair is cared up in a different way from then on. That chemical process gives support to beauty standards imposed to women, affects the self-esteem and raises discussions about consumption, racial and gender relation in brazilian context. Starting from a content survey of two YouTube channels about capillary transition and the native terms that are used to refer to people that passed for this process, I intend to understand the disputes around construction of the meanings of that, analyzing the consumption practices and the intersection between race and gender. This investigation aims on cyberspace, here we highlight the importance of social media, websites and digital platforms as a space for sharing knowledge about hair, ways to take care of it, hairstyles, specific products, and other discussions as feminism, racism and veganism. In this dissertation I introduce a panoramic vision of the studies about hair in Brazil, emphasizing the emergence of hair straightening, outlining the characteristics of the process of capillary transition and the innovations the follows it, exposing how the process has been organized in the cyberspace, articulating a discussion oriented by a perspective of consumption and the intersectionality between race and gender, realizing how the circulation of this contents occurs, the consumption practices and the disputes around native terms.

The issue of intersectionality is increasingly in the debate about public policy management in Brazil. As for their different approaches, prevails the idea of conception as a public management strategy that refer the integration of various sectors and civil society, in order to solve social problems. This allows an overall understanding about the thematic of drugs, as mirrors a multifaceted view of the problem that finds correspondence with the vision of drugs as a social issue and, therefore, does not refer to a single actor, not just certain sectors. The research was characterized by being an exploratory case study conducted in the city of Juiz de Fora/MG. We analyze the functioning of the intersectoral through participant observation, official documents and semi-structured interviews with managers that compose the Comitê Gestor Municipal de Políticas Sobre Drogas (Municipal Management Committee on Drugs) of Programa Crack, é Possível Vencer (Crack Program is Possible Winning). The results showed that the intersectoral approach still is a process under construction, with great challenges. There is a notion of political actors about the concept of intersectionality, associated with aspects of complementarity between sectors, common objective, interdisciplinarity, integrality and practical disagreement. There is a lack of parameter setting for the actions that the guides. Usually, there are emergency strategies of each sector separately. Facilitators aspects of intersectoral approach were the interaction between systems, scenario analysis, implementation planning, knowledge of the other's work and leadership. Hindering aspects: excessive bureaucratization, personal and political interests, different priorities, fragmentation of the administration, insufficient dialogue and sector overloads. In the specific issue of drugs, there are difficulties with regard to the lack of knowledge of network, participation of civil society, pressure for indicators and human resources. While the aspects of the program were cited, among others, lack of programmatic convergence, slowness in the process, lack of planning in the implementation, design which provides interfaces, dialogue facilitator. Understand the points raised facilitates and directs the improvement of public policies that are to be intersectional, especially in the area of drugs.

Multiculturalism as a challenge in contemporary Finnish picturebooks:reimagining sociocultural categoriesPesonen, J. (Jaana) 25 November 2015 (has links)
Abstract
This study focuses on representations of multiculturalism in children’s literature. Children’s books are seen as cultural products which do not only reflect but also construct our social reality. The research consists of four peer-reviewed articles and a summary part. This interdisciplinary research is theoretically positioned in both cultural studies and social sciences, with the key concepts of multiculturalism, identity, ethnicity, racism and anti-racism. More specifically, the study contributes to the discussions of multicultural children’s literature as both pedagogy and art.
The methodological-theoretical framework is based on the social constructionist approach. Language is understood as socially, historically, sociopolitically and ideologically constructed; hence performativity, discourse and representation are considered as key concepts of the analysis. Intersectionality functions as both a theoretical framework which guides the understanding of multiculturalism, as well as an analytical tool for examining the data. The data consists of children’s picturebooks which are analysed by applying the method of close reading. Intersectional analysis also makes the numerous sociocultural categories, i.e. ethnicity, nationality, gender, language, dis/ability and age visible in the studied books.
The results show that representations of multiculturalism are connected to the ideas of nationality, which again relates to the ideas of belonging and exclusion – often meaning Finnish/non-Finnish division. The representations of multiculturalism can reproduce and circulate discourses of differentiation, and thus legitimise exclusion and marginalisation of people. However, picturebooks can also display representations of multiculturalism that challenge the normative assumptions of ‘difference’ and ‘normal’. In the studied books, challenging the dominant sociopolitical discourses seems to further the understanding of ‘us’ in a more inclusive way which then might prevent exclusion of people who differ from the ‘norm’. The didactic quality of children’s books is manifest in anti-racist strategies with the aim of reducing racism by making it visible. The study shows that children’s literature offers possibilities for readers to question implicit assumptions about the self and other, and thus can support readers in becoming more culturally aware and sensitive.
Tutkimuksen metodologis-teoreettisen perustan muodostaa sosiaalinen konstruktivismi.

How do relations of domination « accomplish » ? : Capturing social relations of sex, race and class within the mobilizations of Brazilian migrants in Japan in the 2000sMarchadour, Guénolé 27 February 2015 (has links)
At the intersection of the sociology of mobilization, the sociology of migration and the gender studies, this thesis aims at capturing the accomplishment of relations of domination in the collective actions of Brazilian migrants in Japan in the 2000s. Beyond ethnoracial (descendants / non descendants of Japanese people) and class-based (unskilled workers / self-employed) categorizations, generally used to describe this migration, the social relations of sex also help to categorize the phenomenon. In the wake of the theory of intersectionality, this thesis – based on a multisited ethnography – analyzes the production of social relations of sex, race and class. These can be observed in specific practices but also in a variety of contexts where intersectionality becomes all the more noticeable as the relations of power may change, interchangeable and « invisible ». To do so, three spaces of mobilization have been explored : Brazilian schools, workers’ unions and grassroots organizations. In situ observations were conducted from 2006 to 2011 and ninety semi-structured interviews were led in Japanese and Portuguese with migrant families, members and leaderships of the groups, and their external supporters. The multisited field study shows that the accomplishment of the relations of domination can be captured by focusing on three scales of analysis : national (Brazilian and Japanese contexts), sector-based (education, unionism and voluntary sector), situational (organizational dynamics in each sector). In this way, the thesis highlights the new boundaries of Japanese society and the reconfigurations of an imagined Brazilian community depending on the sites studied.

Att åldras med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning : yrkesverksammas syn på dubbel behovstillhörighet / Ageing with intellectual disability : professionals' view on a combined need for careBlomqvist, Sara, Mäkitalo, Clara January 2018 (has links)

Who receives the power and influence? : An intersectional analysis of some of the lyrics written by Bruce Springsteen and how to work with them in the swedish subjectHarrysson, Mats January 2018 (has links)
