Optimizing the Safety Stock Inventory Cost Under Target Service Level ConstraintsShivsharan, Chetan T 01 January 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The level of customer satisfaction largely depends on manufacturer’s ability to respond to customer orders with promptness. The swiftness with which the manufacturers are able to meet customer demand is measured by the service level. There are two service level measures typically used. The first one is type 1 service level which denotes the probability of not stocking out over a planning period. The other is fill rate which denotes the proportion of demand satisfied with the existing inventory. We review the rich and diverse literature available on inventory cost optimization under these service level constraints. Subsequently two optimization models are developed for the two different types of service level measures. The goal is to determine the safety stock values for all products in a multi product inventory required to achieve aggregate type 1 and type 2 service levels at the minimum inventory cost. For both the models we also maintain a minimum threshold for individual type 1 and type 2 service level for every product. The models are solved using Lagrangian relaxation techniques.
The models are computationally solved in Microsoft Excel. We then carry out discrete event simulation to validate the results and to test the performance of the models. To provide the decision makers with an idea of variability in the service levels and the related risks associated with it on an immediate finite horizon planning scale we also carry out simulation for a time span of one, two and four years.
The results obtained show desired type 1 and type 2 service levels for products with under both infinite and finite planning horizons.

Improvements of an Inventory Control System with Simulation-based AnalysisRosén Berecz, Maja, Wallhagen, Fabian January 2023 (has links)
This thesis aims to improve the inventory control system of a company´s RDC in Norrköping, Sweden. Inefficiencies and non-optimal processes have been identified in the current system, which could negatively affect operations. The study addresses three questions: understanding the current system, identifying improvements, and adjusting the improved system to fit inventory control constraints. A literature review and case study were conducted, revealing lower service levels and higher costs than expected. Experimental scenarios were simulated to examine different improvements, such as using economic order quantity, different safety stock equations, and investigating service levels. /

Inventory control of intermediatestorage in the steel industry:analysis of forecasting accuracyand erroneous products : Case study on SSAB, OxelösundKe, Damian Mon January 2022 (has links)
The case study has been carried out at SSAB Oxelösund, where a major project is on the way to improve the system support for substance planning, to ensure that the right products are actually produced. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to analyze inventory control in intermediate storage within steel industry with data-driven methods and simulation. Where the thesis aims to identify the causes and improvement opportunities of the missing products at the intermediate storage. Method: This study consisted of quantitative research with a deductive approach. Which was done by analyzing the forecast accuracy and erroneous product at rolling, and study how changes in safety stock and batch sizes affect the production with help of discrete event simulation. All analysis was done on secondary data provided by SSAB. Results: Few product groups had high percentual error and absolute error. About one percent of products at rolling had wrong product type. Lastly, the study found that larger batches resulted in less orders being missed. The changes of safety stocks did not have any significant impact on the simulation, due to possible errors under simulation modeling. Conclusion: Depending on the actual production in other steel industries, the contribution of this thesis only applies to similar production. Suggestions for future research should be to improve the simulation and apply other inventory control methods. In addition, to try other forecasting methods to improve the demand forecasts and try to find a root of the problem for wrong production.

Optimal inventory control in cardboard box producing factories : a case studyBlack, Catherine Dianne 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScIngwet)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is a case study in optimal inventory control, applied to Clickabox factory, a
South African cardboard box producer from whom cardboard boxes may be ordered at
short notice via the internet.
The problem of developing a decision–support system for optimal stockholding at the
factory, in order to minimize cardboard off–cut wastage subject to required service levels,
is addressed in this thesis. Previously a simple replenishment policy, based largely on
experience, was implemented at the factory. The inventory model developed for and
applied to Clickabox in this thesis takes account of a raw materials substitution cascade,
as well as the stochasticity of demand, and other factors such as cost, service level and
spatial requirements for the storage of stock. This combination of stochastic demand and
product substitution has not, to the author’s knowledge, previously been dealt with in
the literature.
There are two primary deliverables of this study. The first is a suggestion as to the suitable
stock composition (cardboard types from which boxes may be manufactured) to be kept
in inventory at the factory. The second deliverable is a computerised decision–support
system, based on the inventory model developed, to aid in future inventory replenishment
decisions at Clickabox.
Some of the results of this thesis have, at the time of writing, already been implemented
with success at the factory. These include the suggestions given to the management
of Clickabox as to the suitable stock types to be held in inventory, which have been
implemented in stages since March 2003. The suggested stock composition has proven to
be superior to the previous stock types held, in terms of a reduction in off–cut wastage
and increased availability of suitable boards.
ondervinding gebaseer was, by die fabriek toegepas. ’n Wetenskaplike gefundeerde voorraadmodel
doeltreffend by die fabriek ge¨ımplementeer.

Voorraadbestuur in die Helderberg MunisipaliteitMoelich, Gerrit Marius 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Problems with stock control have arisen since the amalgamation of the four local
governments in the Helderberg Basin. Management and control of stock are important as
stock is considered as cash. It is therefore necessary that local governments pay attention to
the continuous upgrading of existing systems for the purchase and storage of stock as well
as the control of it and the facilities.
The purpose of stock control is to ensure that the existing stock levels are sufficient to enable
the local government to execute its functions effectively. This study points out that problems
experienced are minimised and could even be eliminated by applying the JIT (Just-in-Time)
principle. Statistics have shown that the JIT principle could be applied with great success
within the Helderberg Municipality and that approximately R4,36m could be available for
alternative application.
For the Helderberg Administration JIT could mean minimising excess stock in such a way that
mostly stock items with re-order times of eight weeks will have to be kept in stock.
* Since 5 December 2000 the Helderberg Municipality is included in the City of Cape Town
and is now known as Helderberg Administation.
voorraadbestuur ondervind. Voorraadbestuur is belangrik omdat voorraad as kontant
fasiliteite aandag sal skenk.
Kaapstad en staan tans bekend as Helderberg Administrasie.
