The time frame of the research is related the beginning of the proselytizing activities of the group and ends with the construction of Kingdom Hall Avenue Teixeira de Freitas, one of the main avenues of the city. The study aimed to examine the tensions and power struggles in the holy - estevense religious field , caused by the insertion of a new group , especially for the strong influence of Catholicism in society of this city. The main tenets of the group , the millenarian character, identity building of the faithful and a new world view guided on the ideas of Jehovah's Witnesses are also discussed in this dissertation. We also analyzed the present among Jehovah's Witnesses , Bible -centered , with well-defined gender roles and differences that manifest in the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the group androcentric discourse, since women do not hold jobs, despite the strong performance of proselytism and in the same Hall of internal activities, such as attending meetings, cleaning, among others. In the family, gender inequalities are also present, because the man is the head of the family, " head " and the woman, her helper, submissive to him. This is the model family that Jehovah's Witnesses are intended to represented by them, which involves the construction of habitus. However, between discourse and practice are the experiences and experiences of individuals who appropriate this discourse.

Communicating Religious Disaffiliation: A Study of the Context, Family Conversations, and Face Negotiation among Young Adults

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: This study investigated how young adults communicate their decision to religiously disaffiliate to their parents. Both the context in which the religious disaffiliation conversation took place and the communicative behaviors used during the religious disaffiliation conversation were studied. Research questions and hypotheses were guided by Family Communication Patterns Theory and Face Negotiation Theory. A partially mixed sequential quantitative dominate status design was employed to answer the research questions and hypotheses. Interviews were conducted with 10 young adults who had either disaffiliated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or the Watch Tower Society. During the interviews, the survey instrument was refined; ultimately, it was completed by 298 religiously disaffiliated young adults. For the religious disaffiliation conversation’s context, results indicate that disaffiliated Jehovah’s Witnesses had higher conformity orientations than disaffiliated Latter-day Saints. Additionally, disaffiliated Jehovah’s Witnesses experienced more stress than disaffiliated Latter-day Saints. Planning the conversation in advance did lead to the disaffiliation conversation being less stressful for young adults. Furthermore, the analysis found that having three to five conversations reduced stress significantly more than having one or two conversations. For the communicative behaviors during the religious disaffiliation conversation, few differences were found in regard to prevalence of the facework behaviors between the two groups. Of the 14 facework behaviors, four were used more often by disaffiliated JW than disaffiliated LDS—abuse, passive aggressive, pretend, and defend self. In terms of effectiveness, the top five facework behaviors were talk about the problem, consider the other, have a private discussion, remain calm, and defend self. Overall, this study begins the conversation on how religious disaffiliation occurs between young adults and their parents and extends Family Communication Patterns Theory and Face Negotiation Theory to a new context. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Communication 2015

This work aims to research the identity transformation process from the moment of the conversion to the Religious Movement of Jehovah's Witnesses: a study of converts from two Congregations in Juiz de Fora. It initially approaches theoretical reflections on the postmodernity moment, the identity and the difference as well as a brief study on the religious conversion. It intends to show Jehovah's Witnesses reality from the point of view of the religious movement itself. The objective of this research is to understand the construction process of their new identity, how they harmonize with other converts and how they accept each other from the moment of their conversion. The work was modeled from Jehovah's Witnesses perspective. It is a vision of the Religious Movement of Jehovah's Witnesses based on their records and an analysis of the new identity based on these social actors' narratives in their own social environment.

Vem är jag nu? : Identitetens påverkan hos unga vuxna som vuxit upp som Jehovas Vittnen och blivit uteslutna / Who am I now? : The impact of identity on young adults who have grown up as Jehovah's Witnesses and have been excluded.

Bergqvist, Gisela January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to examine how the identity of young adults raised within Jehovah's Witnesses is affected by exclusion. This is based on the social identity theory and Marcia’s theory of the identity statuses in an identity development. The study was qualitative with semi-structured interviews with eight young adults formerly. Jehovah's Witnesses who grew up in the organization. The inductive thematic analysis yielded three main themes; In- and out-group thinking; subordination and obedience as well as incipient distancing and awakening. One of the results was that the participants had already learned an in- and out-group thinking as children. and that on the basis of this social identification, the participants' contact was limited to only spending time with the ingroup and avoiding contact with people in the outgroup. This had the effect of exclusion in the building of new social relationships, where they lacked a frame of reference on how to act in certain contexts, they did not know what was expected of them in society, they lacked the overall picture of society and its social interaction.

Jazyková analýza komunikátů vybraných nových náboženských hnutí (se zaměřením na manipulaci) / Sample new religious movements' texts linguistic analysis (aimed at manipulation)

Korábečný, Martin January 2013 (has links)
In this diploma thesis the verbal persuasive devices typical of two new religious movements' texts (Jehovah's Witnesses and New Age) have been analysed, with regard to manipulation. Because of the interdisciplinary character of manipulation religion and sociological aspects in new religious movements section and logical, psychological and ethical aspects in manipulative argumentation section have been considered. It was found that the style of the analysed texts and its verbal persuasive devices differ from the field of religious communication only in few aspects from verbal persuasive devices of journalistic communication and that manipulative devices are partly acceptable with regard to the sources and methods involved in the texts, however, the field of quasiargumentation have been found outside acceptability.

Témoins de Jéhovah : résistance et compromis : étude comparative : États-Unis, Barbade, Guadeloupe / Jehovah's Witnesses : resistance and Compromise, : comparative study : United States, Barbados, Guadeloupe / Temwen Jewova yo : Rezistans ak Konpwesyon : Etid konparatif : Etazini, Barbad, Gwadloup

Zamord, Christophe 25 November 2019 (has links)
Since their founding in 1870, Jehovah's Witnesses have experienced spectacular growth until 1995, in the country where Christianity predominates. A gradual slowdown in growth was then observed, particularly in the industrialized countries in the mid-1990s. Moreover, their growth has been successfully imbalanced from one country to another. Thus, in 2017, there was a Jehovah's Witness for 50 people in Guadeloupe, one for 112 people in Barbados and one for 263 in the United States. This PhD thesis examines several growth factors, borrowing from the concepts of American sociologists Ryan Cragun and Ronald Lawson as well as Rodney Stark and Lawrence Iannacone, linking the growth of a religious group to the interaction between religious offerings and religious demand. in the country where the religious group settled. A literature search was conducted to examine the history and evolution of this religious movement. In addition to that, a qualitative method was adopted in interviews with dozens of Witnesses over several years and with participant observation, in order to better understand the movement, its doctrines, but also the motivations of the members. Then, a quantitative method was applied to a survey of hundreds of Jehovah's Witnesses in Barbados, in Guadeloupe and the United States of America. The specificities of these three countries partly explain the differences in growth observed in the religious group studied. / Depi fondasyon yo nan lane 1870, Temwen Jewova yo te gen yon kwasans espektakilè jiska 1995, nan peyi kote dominasyon relijyon se krisyanis la. Lè sa a, yon ralentissement gradyèl nan kwasans yo te obsève patikilyèman nan peyi yo endistriyalize nan mitan ane 1990 yo. Anplis, li te kwasans yo te dezekilibre siksè soti nan yon peyi a yon lòt. Kidonk, nan 2017, te gen yon Temwen Jewova pou 50 moun nan Gwadloup, yon Temwen pou 112 moun nan Barbad ak yon Temwen pou 263 moun nan Etazini yo.Rechèch doktora prezan an etidye plizyè faktè kwasans, prete konsèp sosyolojis ameriken Ryan Cragun ak Ronald Lawson ak Rodney Stark ak Lawrence Iannacone ki lye kwasans yon gwoup relijye nan entèraksyon ant òf relijye ki se li ak demann relijye nan peyi kote li te etabli tèt li. Yon rechèch literati te fèt revize istwa a ak evolisyon sa a mouvman relijye yo. Answit, yo te adopte yon metòd kalitatif, nan entèvyou ak plizyè douzèn Temwen sou plizyè ane ak yon obsèvasyon patisipan, pou pi byen konprann mouvman an, doktrin li yo, men tou motivasyon fidèl yo. Lè sa a, yon metòd quantitative te aplike nan yon sondaj sou dè santèn de Temwen Jewova nan Barbad nan Gwadloup ak nan Etazini. Espesifikite yo nan twa peyi sa yo eksplike an pati diferans nan kwasans obsève nan gwoup relijye etidye.

Herrens måltid : En komparativ litteraturstudie om nattvardsfirandet i Svenska kyrkan, Pingst och Jehovas vittnen / Lord's Supper : A Comparative Literature Study on the Eucharist in Svenska kyrkan, Pingst and Jehovah's Witnesses

Alfredsson, Antonia January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to examine the eucharist in three denominations of Christianity, namely Svenska kyrkan, Pingst and Jehovah’s witnesses. These groups are examined individually, followed by a comparison of the different views of the eucharist. The information the examination is based on are different official documents provided by the named denominations’ theologians and elders for both members of the church as well as the public. The comparison is followed by a discussion about the relationship between the denominations’ view on eucharist and their ecclesiology, i.e. their view of the church.    The results show that the differences between them are much due to the sources they use to support their claims as well as their individual history. The similarities are found to be due to a general desire to unite all members of the congregation and to let everyone take part in a collective connection with Christ regardless of whether or not the partakers roles in the church. The discussion about the relationship between the three denominations’ relationships between eucharist and ecclesiology show that the eucharist is a somewhat good representation of the general denominations’ views. This conclusion aligns with the view of Scott W. Bullard’s research about the relationship between the eucharist and the church, where the result is that the eucharist is a foundation of the church’s construction and organization.

Původ doktrinálních rozporů Církve římskokatolické a Náboženské společnosti Svědkové Jehovovi / Origins of the doctrinal contradiction between the Catholic Church and Jehovah's Witnesses

Zoulová, Tereza January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to describe the contradictions of Christian denominations, not dogmatically doctrinal, but generally doctrinal, in terms of how they arise and how they impact the thinking within the respective groups. Two churches were selected for this comparison, the Catholic Church and Jehovah's Witnesses, as representatives of the denominations with the most notable differences. The initial starting point is the history of the two churches, which highlights the cultural and historical conditions under which the two churches were formed. Further work on two cases of conflict, the concept of the Holy Trinity and access to apostolic succession, discusses the basic argumentative practices that apply to both churches. This passage shows that on this level the difference between the two communities is only minimal, the procedures applied by both are consistent. The argument is followed by the interpretative part, which deals with the search for the causes of discrepancies in the diversity of interpretations of the Bible, which was published as a joint authority of both communities from previous argumentation analysis. Finally, this work describes how the differences resulting from different interpretations are involved in the daily life and organization of the Church. A different discourse...

Simard-Émond, Arnaud 12 1900 (has links)
Although present in Aboriginal communities in Canada since the early 1930s, Jehovism among Aboriginal people in Canada has not yet been the subject of any ethnographic, sociological, or historical study. The purpose of this thesis is to remedy this vacuum by proposing the first ethnographic study of Jehovah's Witnesses among Aboriginal people in Canada. More specifically, this research deals with the historical and current presence of Jehovah's Witnesses in the Anishinabe (Algonquin) community of Kitigan Zibi (Quebec). From an online field of research spanning a period of 10 months, I trace the development of Jehovism in Kitigan Zibi in addition to exposing the reasons for an Indigenous person to become ‒ or to stay ‒ Jehovah's Witnesses today, or, conversely, not to become Jehovah's Witnesses. My analysis shows that: 1) the conversion of the early Anishinabeg to Jehovism at Kitigan Zibi takes place in a particular historical context (conflicts with oblate missionaries, rupture with the territory and the beginning of wage work as the main source of income for the Anishinabeg); 2) Nowadays, the intergenerational transmission of religion plays a major role in the reproduction of Jehovah's Witnesses in Kitigan Zibi; 3) The decision to become or remain Jehovah's Witnesses fits fully into Algonquin epistemology; 4) In a context of competition with other religious movements, Jehovism no longer seems to respond to the motivations that the Algonquins are likely to have.
