Veiled Thresholds : Whispers Between Eros and PerilAntonishina, Elena January 2024 (has links)
This body of work investigates the contradictory aspects of human connections, which can serve as sources of solace as well as sources of sorrow. It particularly focuses on the dynamics of toxic relationships, highlighting how the allure of intense love is often intertwined with the potential for significant emotional distress. The purpose of this exploration is to show in my installation the dichotomy between deep affection and detrimental dependency, how profound emotions can lead to both self-discovery and self-destruction. The reflection is rooted in the examination of the fine line that exists between passionate attachment and harmful reliance. This endeavor is not just a scholarly investigation but also a personal journey into the depths of human desire and its implications. By navigating this research through the lens of art, the objective is to contribute to the broader dialogue on the nature of emotional bonds and their impact on individuals. The exploration presented here seeks to offer insights into the enriching yet destructive facets of love, inviting viewers and readers alike to reflect on their own experiences and perceptions of romantic relationships. Through this artistic inquiry, the intention is to illuminate the multifaceted experiences of love, drawing attention to the intricate balance between its empowering and detrimental effects on the human spirit.

TheLove of Truth & The Truth of Love: Retrieving Saints Augustine & Thomas Aquinas on the Relationship of Understanding & LoveCollins, Joseph Christian January 2022 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Frederick G. Lawrence / Johannine literature explains the meaning of Jesus of Nazareth and our relationship with God in terms of logos and agape: the Logos is Theos (Jn 1) and Theos is Agape (1Jn 4). The goal of this dissertation is to relate these two, understanding and love, to develop a master analogy for the revelation of God to human beings. This is elaborated through close reading and commentary on classic texts by two Doctors of the Church, Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, in an attempt to reconcile voluntarist and intellectualist approaches to the question of God by showing how the act of understanding is analogous with the act of love. Augustine would integrate his understanding of Scripture and philosophy into his theory of the inner word (verbum mentis) as the image of the Triune God. This consummate theological achievement is also a meta-analysis of personal communication by a master of the art of rhetoric, defined as “the good man, skilled in speaking” (vir bonus, dicendi peritus) by Cato the Elder in Quintilian’s Institutio Oratoria. The Bishop of Hippo affirms the words of a wise person as the ideal of communication, as perfected in the life of the Christian evangelist. A systematic exegesis of Augustine’s personal, rhetorical, and theological synthesis, the first part of this dissertation is a study of several key texts to explore how the Doctor of Grace relates love with understanding, the words of Scripture with those of the philosophers.
Thomas Aquinas develops Augustine’s insights in the theological system of his Summa theologiae, expanding the theory of the inner word into a theoretical synthesis uniting reason and
faith, scientia and sapientia, which the Doctor of Grace was not able to achieve. The second part of the dissertation analyzes and complements the reading of Augustine in the first part by testing it in dialogue with Aquinas’ treatment of the same themes—understanding and love—in the First and Second Parts of the Summa as representative of his mature thought.
The study of these two figures is intended as an attempt to apply Lonergan’s Method in Theology. By developing the relationship between knowing the truth and loving it, this project expands upon his efforts to sublate the linguistic phenomenology of Heidegger’s hermeneutic revolution within a theological system. Lonergan formulates his own hermeneutic as four levels of knowing: experiencing, understanding, judging, deciding. Having his insight on the centrality of love late in life, however, he would leave his interpreters with the question of how to integrate knowing with loving. The exigencies of publishing Method would also mean leaving the problem of communication as a challenge for his successors. This dissertation seeks to propose a solution with the retrieval of Augustine’s hermeneutic of caritas as a model for communicating Christian self-appropriation through a phenomenology of how we realize the logos.
We understand the meaning of a whole by recognizing the order in which all its parts fit together. In this way, judgment operates analogically as a determination of the fittingness of a logical proportion. And so, as Logos, God is the order into which all things fit together, revealed to us as a complementary pattern, which is expressed through analogy. In the Catholic tradition, this pattern of grace is consummated by receiving bread and wine sacramentally, and recognizing in them the essence of our relationship with God as well as one another, as we realize this loving relationship as the form of all our acts. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2022. / Submitted to: Boston College. Gravimetric and density profiling using the combination of surface acoustic waves and neutron reflectivityToolan, D.T.W., Barker, R., Gough, Tim, Topham, P.D., Howse, J.R., Glidle, A. 22 October 2016 (has links)
Yes / A new approach is described herein, where neutron reflectivity measurements that probe changes in the density profile of thin films as they absorb material from the gas phase have been combined with a Love wave based gravimetric assay that measures the mass of absorbed material. This combination of techniques not only determines the spatial distribution of absorbed molecules, but also reveals the amount of void space within the thin film (a quantity that can be difficult to assess using neutron reflectivity measurements alone). The uptake of organic solvent vapours into spun cast films of polystyrene has been used as a model system with a view to this method having the potential for extension to the study of other systems. These could include, for example, humidity sensors, hydrogel swelling, biomolecule adsorption or transformations of electroactive and chemically reactive thin films. This is the first ever demonstration of combined neutron reflectivity and Love wave-based gravimetry and the experimental caveats, limitations and scope of the method are explored and discussed in detail.

Saber o amar: os Diálogos de Amor, de Leão Hebreu / To know love: the Diálogos de Amor, by Leão HebreuTavares, Paula Domingues 13 April 2012 (has links)
Análise Multicanal de Ondas de Superfície (MASW): um estudo comparativo com fontes ativas e passivas, ondas Rayleigh e Love e diferentes modos de propagação / Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW): a comparative study with active and passive sources, Rayleigh and Love waves and different modes of propagationEikmeier, Claus Naves 19 March 2018 (has links)
This work aim to study the MASW (Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves) method by comparing results obtained with different sources (active and passive), Rayleigh and Love waves and different modes of surface waves propagation. Two seismic tests were performed: one with two-dimensional acquisition geometry and 10Hz triaxial geophones, and the other with linear geometry and 4.5 Hz vertical component geophones. Studies were carried out with the following sources: sledgehammer, rammer compactor, ambient noise and vehicular traffic, the last through the Passive Roadside MASW technique. Inversions results with vertical component data (Rayleigh waves) were evaluated through joint inversions with the radial (Rayleigh waves) and transversal (Love waves) components. It were also analyzed the inversions results of the fundamental mode of the dispersion curve with the results of joint inversions with the first higher mode. The studies were carried out in front of the Instituto de Astronomia, Geofísica e Ciência Atmosféricas (IAG) (Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Science) located inside the university campus Cidade Universitária Armando de Salles Oliveira (CUASO) of Universidade de São Paulo (USP) (University of São Paulo) in the neighborhood of Butantã, São Paulo. The study area has information with a geological material description and SPT (Standard Penetration Test) values that were used to validate the results. The rammer compactor showed to be a better active source in relation to sledgehammer through different aspects: generation of greater energy in vertical and transverse components; better quality of (V,f) spectrum; the data have the advantage that they can be processed using the f-k beamforming technique. The acquisition with ambient noise did not allow the dispersion curves interpretation due to the short acquisition time used. Passive Roadside MASW data contributed to the active data through the lower frequency. Besides that, due to the clear identification of the 1st higher mode in its (V,f) spectrum it was possible to identify the same mode in the (V,f) spectrum of the active data, interpretation that was, until then, doubtful. However, the joint inversion of the Passive Roadside dispersion curves with the active curves did not produce better results compared to the inversion obtained only by the active curves. The joint inversion of dispersion curves from radial (Rayleigh) and transversal (Love waves) components with the curves obtained by the vertical component (Rayleigh waves) also did not bring a better result when compared with the inversion achieved only by the vertical component curves. The use of the first higher mode with the fundamental mode, however, showed significant improvements in the joint inversions results compared to inversions only of the fundamental mode curve. Considering the uncertainties involved, the best results of this work converge with the a priori information of the study area. At the current MASW method stage of development, several steps are quite dependent on the operator. Therefore, the studies carried out in this work contribute to a better understanding of the method in its fundamentals, acquisition parameters and processing.

O Brasil não é para principiantes: Lew Parrella, Geoge Love e David Zingg, fotógrafos norte-americanos na revista Realidade (1966-1968) / Brazil is not for beginners: Lew Parrella, George Love e David Zingg, American photograghers in the Realidade magazine (1966-1968)Manjabosco, Angelo Augusto 05 April 2016 (has links)
This research is intended to investigate the contributions of three American photographers - David Zingg, George Love and Lew Parrella - for the photojournalism published in Reality magazine, and in what way their jobs are different from what was produced in Brazil until the early 1960s. The importance of the magazine during the military dictatorship regime, added to highlight some of the photographers hired at the time by Editora Abril subsequently obtained in art exhibitions in museums and galleries are some of the elements that justify this study, as well as the lack of published researches focused on these three North American photographers. The time frame chosen for this dissertation is from the first issue of the magazine in April 1966 to the December 1968 edition, when the approval of the Institutional Act No. 5 is instituted in Brazil. This choice is due to the fact that during this period there was still a relative freedom of expression, both within the grafic as textual genres. In addition, it can be consdered the publication\'s biggest stage of social relevance, for during the military dictatorship it raised themes that confronted the regime. The main sources of research used were the copies of the magazine themselves and the recent bibliography on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the 1964 coup in Brazil. Although Reality magazine is already the subject of many studies, it makes room for this research, which is supported at the intersection of the fields the history of photography and politics.
