Creating identity in the face of the Other: A Levinian reading of Luis Vélez de Guevara's La serrana de la Vera

Jensen, Elizabeth Anne 29 May 2020 (has links)
Among the works of theater of the Spanish Golden Age which feature a mujer varonil, Luis Vélez de Guevara's play, La serrana de la Vera (1613), is particularly provocative. The intensity and ambiguity of the dual nature of its female protagonist, Gila, has been the subject of much recent scholarly investigation. The staging of the play lends itself to a Levinian reading, a new approach to this particular text and theater of the Golden Age in general. Emmanuel Levinas moves beyond metaphysics, phenomenology and intentionality to posit ethics as first philosophy. Levinas explains that the face of the Other is a revelation before which my own presence is an epiphany and summons me into an ethical relationship before I am aware of my own being. A correct ethical relationship is maintained only when the Other is allowed her absolute alterity, otherwise the Other is subsumed into the matrix of the Self and the result is suffering. A Levinian reading of La serrana de la Vera moves beyond exploring systems of class and gender and discovers that the suffering in the play can be traced to face-to-face encounters in which individuals are unable or unwilling to truly see the face of the Other.

Gerbino, Lucia 13 April 2018 (has links)

Geology of the Cuesta Ridge Ophiolite Remnant near San Luis Obispo , California: Evidence for the Tectonic Setting and Origin of the Coast Range Ophiolite

Snow, Cameron A. 01 May 2002 (has links)
The Cuesta Ridge ophiolite is one of the best-preserved remnants of mid-Jurassic ophiolite in California. Geologic mapping and petrologic studies show that it comprises (1) harzburgite mantle tectonite, (2) dunite-rich mantle transition zone (MTZ), (3) wehrlite and pyroxenite, (4) isotropic gabbro, (5) sheeted dike/sill complex, (6) volcanic rocks (7) late-stage dikes and flows, and (8) tuffaceous radiolarian chert. The sheeted dike/sill complex is dominated by quartz diorite, with significant modal quartz and hornblende. The volcanic section is dominated by arc tholeiite and boninitic lavas. Boninites, with high MgO, Cr, and Ni comprise 40% of the volcanic rocks. Latestage dikes and lava flows below the overlying chert, have a MORB-like affinity. These data suggest formation in a supra-subduction zone setting with three stages of arc-related magmatism before late-stage MORB magmatism. I infer formation above the east-dipping proto-Franciscan subduction zone and suggest that ophiolite formation was terminated by a ridge subduction/collision event.

Cacace, Francisco Esteban 16 August 2019 (has links)
La Jovita-Las Águilas mafic-ultramafic belt comprises an assemblage of igneous intrusions outcroping on the eastern slope of the Sierra Grande de San Luis. This belt extends for about 100 km in NNE-SSO direction and its width does not exceed 5 km. This work focusses on the outcrops of the southern portion of this belt, between Los Manantiales river and El Puestito stream, comprising Escuela Las Pircas, El Fierro, Virorco and Las Higueras intrusives. These bodies are of great interest owing to the fact that they are layered intrusions such as Skaergaard (Greenland), Kabanga (Tanzania), Jinchuan (China) and Bjerkreim-Sokndal (Norway), among others. The significance that entails the study of these kind of intrusions is due to the fact that they carry mineralization, which in La Jovita-Las Águilas intrusive bodies is represented by Fe, Ni, Cu and Co sulphides and platinum group minerals. Besides their economic significance, layered intrusive bodies exhibit igneous stratigraphic sequences that represent a valuable tool for studying processes and mechanisms capable of generating igneous stratification, such as fractional crystallization, magma replenishment and mixing, convection, compactation and/or nucleation and crystal grow rate fluctuations, among others. The increase in the knowledge of layered mafic-ultramafic intrusions requires defining their igneous stratigraphy in detail. To achieve this goal, these research comprised the study of field relationships, yacence, macro and microscopic petrography, mineral chemistry and bulk rock geochemistry analyses, that allowed to define different stratigraphic units. It was established that Escuela Las Pircas intrusive body is composed by four stratigraphic units. El Fierro intrusive body is formed by one stratigraphic unit. Virorco intrusive body is constituted by three different stratigraphic sectors: the east sector, represented by one unit; the central sector, composed by two units, and the west sector, constituted by three units. Las Higueras intrusive body is constituted by two stratigraphic sectors: the main sector, composed by three units, and the marginal sector, represented by one unit. The stratigraphic correlationships among these units allowed to construct an igneous stratigraphic model composed by two series: Layered Series, constituted by three stratigraphic zones (hidden zone, transition zone and upper zone) and Marginal Border Series, composed by two stratigraphic zones (unlayered marginal zone and layered marginal zone). The genesis of the layering recognized in the Layered Series studied portion is related to nucleation and crystal grow rate fluctuations in a gravitationally layered magma, while in the Marginal Border Series, it is the result of a strong temperature gradient between the chilled margin and the country rock (unlayered marginal zone) and of compositional and liquidus temperature variations in the crystallization front (layered marginal zone).

El teatro campesino de Aztlán

Delucchi, Mary Phelan 01 January 1971 (has links) (PDF)
No other population has contributed more to American society and received so little in return."1 Until recently the Mexican-Americans had remained quietly in the background, apparently accepting their station in life with little or no desire to improve it--a "sleeping giant," as some politicians have called this politically potential group. Statistics show that relatively few Mexican-Americans have become acculturated and assimilated into Anglo-American society (See page 9). The great majority have retained their Spanish language and their family traditions, and have remained more or less static in their economic position and isolated from the mainstream of life in the United States. While most ethnically differentiated groups in United States have used the educational system as a "major vehicle for social mobility," Mexican-Americana either have not taken full advantage of the opportunity, or it has been inaccessible to them.

Mid-Twentieth Century Residential Development in San Luis Obispo

Zike, Allison Dean 01 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
San Luis Obispo’s mid-century spanned the years beginning in the Great Depression and ending during the post-World War II housing boom. During this time the City grew in population and in size, adding several acres of land and thousands of single-family residential parcels. This research presents a chronological representation of the City’s growth, as well as key events in the City’s history. Residential development in the mid-century brought several new styles of architecture to the City including Mid-century Modern and Prairie homes among others. These architectural styles are detailed and presented in order to identify and guide the preservation of historic resources.

Visualizing Borges: Figures of Interpretation

Cox, Kempton John 01 May 2015 (has links) (PDF)
In this work I explore the geometry found both in the narrative structures and the internal shapes proposed in Jorge Luis Borges’ short stories and seek to arrive at new interpretations of those works by mapping out—in graphical form—the shapes found therein. I move from basic two-dimensional shapes (lines, triangles, quadrilaterals) to those involving the element of temporality and atemporality (circles, interruptive loops, chiasmus) to shapes dealing with repetition—both geometric and temporal—and eternity (labyrinths, fractals, and Alephs). In each case and for each short story analyzed, either an existent interpretation is favored or a new interpretation is set forth.

García Flores, Diego José 05 July 2017 (has links)

Implementing a Data Acquisition System for the Training of Cloud Coverage Neural Networks

Montgomery, Weston C 01 June 2021 (has links) (PDF)
Cal Poly is home to a solar farm designed to nominally generate 4.5 MW of electricity. The Gold Tree Solar Farm (GTSF) is currently the largest photovoltaic array in the California State University (CSU) system, and it was claimed to be able to produce approximately 11 GWh per year. These types of projections come from power generation models which have been developed to predict power production of these large solar fields. However, when it comes to near-term forecasting of power generation with variable sources such as wind and solar, there is definitely room for improvement. The two primary factors that could impact solar power generation are shading and the angle of the sun. The angle of the sun relative to GTSF’s panels can be analytically calculated using geometry. Shading due to cloud coverage, on the other hand, can be very difficult to map. Due to this, artificial neural networks (NN) have a lot of potential for accurate near-term cloud coverage forecasting. Much of the necessary training data (e.g. wind speeds, temperature, humidity, etc.) can be acquired from online sources, but the most important dataset needs to be captured at GTSF: sky images showing the exact location of the clouds over the solar field. Therefore, a new image capturing digital acquisition (DAQ) system has been implemented to gather the necessary training data for a goal of forecasting cloud coverage 15-30 minutes into the future.
