Teachers' professional identity in the digital world : a digital ethnography of Religious Education teachers' engagement in online social space

Robson, James January 2014 (has links)
This thesis presents an ethnographic investigation of teachers’ peer-to-peer engagement in online social spaces, using the concept of teachers’ professional identity as a framework to shape and focus the study. Using Religious Education (RE) as a strong example of the wider phenomenon of teachers’ online engagement, three online social spaces (the Times Educational Supplement’s RE Forum, the National Association of Teachers of RE Facebook Page, and the Save RE Facebook Group) were investigated as case studies. A year was spent in these spaces with digital ethnographic research taking place simultaneously in each one. Data gathering primarily took the form of participant observations, in depth analysis of time-based sampled text (three 8-week samples from each space), online and offline narrative based interviews and, to a lesser extent, questionnaires, elite interviews and analysis of grey literature. The study finds that engagement in the online social spaces offered teachers opportunities to perform and construct their professional identities across a variety of topics ranging from local practical concerns to national political issues. In more practical topics the spaces could often be observed as acting as communities of practice in which professional learning took place and identities were constructed, with such online professional development influencing offline classroom practice. However, engaging across this spectrum of topics afforded users a broad conception of what it means to be a teacher, where professional identity was understood as going beyond classroom practice and integrating engagement with subject-wide, political and policy related issues at a national level. Such engagement provided many users with a feeling of belonging to a national community of peers, which, alongside political activism initiated in online interaction and meaning making debates concerning the future and identity of the subject, provided teachers with feelings of empowerment and a sense of ownership of their subject. However, the study found that teachers’ online engagement took place within structures embedded in the online social spaces that influenced and shaped engagement and the ways in which users’ professional identities were performed and constructed. These structures were linked with the design and technical affordances of the spaces, the agendas of the parent organisations that provided the spaces, and the discourses that dominated the spaces. These aspects of the spaces provided a structure that limited engagement, content and available online identity positions while additionally projecting ideal identity positions, distinctive in each space. These ideal identity positions had a constructive influence over many users who aspired to these ideals, often gaining confidence through expressing such socially validated ideals or feeling inadequate when failing to perform such ideal identity positions. Thus, this study finds a complex relationship between agency linked with active online identity performance and the constructive influence of embedded structures that contributed to the shaping of users’ engagement and their understandings of themselves as professionals and their subject.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Patricia Urvinis.pdf: 819816 bytes, checksum: cb3cbefd97bf61fdefb7a31a9e586891 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-08-07 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / This research aims at investigating the local-global knowledge which emerges from the discoursive practices of two teachers of English who have just started the course Reflection on Action: the teacher of English learning and teaching and two other ones who have already finished the same course. Our theoretical construct is based on Contemporary Applied Linguistics on the perspective of Moita Lopes (2006a; 2006b; 2002); Kumaravadivelu (2006) and Celani (2005). This study is grounded on the binominal local-global knowledge (Canagarajah, 2005); on the official documents that guide the practice of teachers of English in the Brazilian educational context (São Paulo, 2008; Brasil, 2002; 2000; 1998) and on Vygotsky s Sociocultural and Historical Theory of teaching and learning (Vygotsky, 1930/1989; 1934/2001, among others). The research is conducted by an interpretative methodology (Myers, 1997; Moita Lopes; 1996; Erickson; 1986, among others) and the data has been collected through two instruments: a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview (Rizzini, Castro and Sartor, 1999). For analyzing and interpreting the data, three categories of analysis have been established: the category of thematic content, the observation of how the participants place their enunciates and deontic modalizations (Bronckart, 1997/1999). The study concentrates on three areas of analysis (a) senses, meanings and aims of teachinglearning English in the educational context; (2) planning and criteria for curriculum content selection; and (3) pedagogical practices. The results showed that the teachers who were taking the first module of the course Reflection on Action presented a discourse strongly supported by local knowledge, but heading to a dialogue with a global one. On the other hand, the teachers who have already finished the course achieved more autonomy to reflect about the global knowledge in their relationship to local one to promote the teaching-learning English for specific contexts / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo investigar os saberes locais-globais que emergem nas práticas discursivas de duas professoras de inglês iniciantes do curso Reflexão sobre a ação: o professor de inglês aprendendo e ensinando e de duas professoras egressas do referido curso.

Entre culture d'enseignement et culture d'apprentissage : étude des représentations des enseignants de FLE sur leurs pratiques en milieu universitaire vietnamien / Midway between cultural education and cultural learning : study on french as foreign language (FLE) teacher’s practises representations inside vietnamese academic community.

Blouin, Marie-José 16 September 2016 (has links)
This thesis is about French as foreign language teaching practices inside vietnamese academic community. Its purpose is to study these practices based on teachers’ representations in order to understand how they would use teaching methods closed to theoretical references of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - they were trained with their theoretical references - and what they actually they say they do in their classes practices inside the educational local culture. This title « Midway between cultural education and cultural learning » identifies the dialectics or contentious connection between the heritage of cultural customs which exists inside learning-education traditional methods and western influences as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages which represents one of the methods to learn and teach languages. Between this past and present methodologies, the issue is to understand how teachers perceive their practices when we know that vietnamese government promotes western influences in its language policy. This thesis tries to answer at 2 questions : 1. What is the impact of educative and social culture in the way teachers teach ? 2. In what ways and how far they adapt these western influences to vietnamese local context ? In methodological way, this thesis gives priority to qualitative approach and bases on fifteen academic teachers of French as foreign language interviews based in North, Center and South Vitenam.

Možnosti využití internetu ve výuce německého jazyka na gymnáziích v České republice / Possibilities of Using the Internet in teaching German at secondary schools in the Czech Republic

Červenková, Martina January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to show the possibilities of using the Internet in order to make language learning more effective. In the centre of attention is the language learning at secondary schools in the Czech Republic. The aims, contents and particularities of teaching German at secondary schools in the Czech Republic are defined at the beginning, followed by a discussion about convenient didactic methods according to the educational theories. Internet tools and other its characteristics, which could contribute to the efficiency improvement of language teaching, are also introduced. The thesis also pays attention to the specialized terminology. In the practical part, we can find, at first, some specific prerequisites of using the Internet in teaching a foreign language. We can also find some concrete examples of using the Internet as a support in teaching with regards to the established educational aims. All is based on my own teaching experience and on an extensive internet and foreign literature research. Some useful internet web pages are also mentioned. The thesis shows that the Internet offers quite a lot of possibilities which could, in a way, contribute to efficiency improvement in teaching German.

A constituição do sujeito na formação científica do profissional fisioterapeuta

Grandi, Suzete 09 April 2010 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-06-02T17:19:27Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Suzete Grandi.pdf: 1000332 bytes, checksum: 319c8745b07ac8097c14713cd86b3851 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-06-02T17:19:27Z (GMT). In this sense, the modes of being of the future professionals are influenced by the organization of the curriculum of their formation course, in this case, Physiotherapy. As the health work address issues that involve the human existence, the objective of this study is to show the conditions and possibilities of determination, as well as the implications of the constitution of the subject and the professional formation in the scientific and nonscientific dimensions of professionals in Physiotherapy. Coherent with this objective, the constitution of the subject defines the scope of the research problem to be examined in the areas of Education and Health. This study is supported by the thinking of Michel Foucault, especially the works "The History of Sexuality" and "The Hermeneutics of the Subject", and it is also complemented by contributions from experts in Healthcare, as Silvio Paulo Botomé and Rubens Rebelatto, among others. The method employed consisted of raising, identifying and analyzing some determinations in the formation of the subject that depend on the type of scientific formation. In order to do this, the work took into consideration the teaching experience at the Course of Physiotherapy of the University of Caxias do Sul and the Clinic of Physiotherapy at the same university and it is further complemented by interviews with students, teachers and professionals in the field. The dissertation includes, besides the introduction and conclusion, three chapters. The first is entitled The Constitution of the Subject and the professional formation, the second, The Constitution of the subject in professional scientific formation in Physiotherapy and the third, The Constitution of the Subject in the learning / teachingservice integration. The relevance of this dissertation lies in its contribution to assess and qualify the services as well as the graduation courses, in this case Physiotherapy, but also for other courses of the healthcare field, both from the University of Caxias do Sul, and other institutions. It is equally inferred from these studies the social relevance present in the activities of healthcare professionals.
