De Vcme amigo, servo, venerador...:letras e civilidade nas Gerais do setecentos / Sincerally yours, friend, vassal, admirer...: letter-writting and civility at Minas Gerais during XVIIIth centuryPaulo Miguel Moreira da Fonseca 19 December 2011 (has links)
This study discusses the society formed at Minas Gerais between the ending of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth century. Due to the peculiarities surrounding its creation and occupation, the portuguese colony at America has given rise to specific forms of identity, which existed together during the crisis of the Old Colonial System alternating forms of relationship and self-image of the settlers. At Minas Gerais, the sociability were also influenced by the practices of education, reading and book ownership. I dialog med muntliga och skriftliga berättartraditioner : En undersökning av svenska sjömäns levnadsberättelser / A dialogue with oral and written traditions : A study of Swedish sailors' life narrativesNagel, Erik January 2012 (has links)
This is a study of autobiographical letters written in the early 1950s by seven Swedish sailors. The letters were contributions to a project at the Nordiska Museet in Stockholm aiming to collect and publicize workers' autobiographical narratives. The aim of this thesis is to analyze how the sailors composed their narratives in dialogue not only with heroic epics and other oral and written literary traditions but also with folklore studies and with contemporary public conversations about Sweden. According to Bachtin, any given text must be understood as a dialogue with the entire history of literature and the analysis in this study shows that the sailors' narratives are composed according to the pattern of the returning Homeric hero: the hero by destiny, the hero by action, and the hero by tradition. In terms of contents the letters are centered on two major themes: the two world wars and the transformation of Sweden from a poor rural society into a modern well-fare state. These themes are dramatized in plots, test-conflicts, motifs, and motif-complexes (functions, motiphemes), well-known from oral traditions and classical drama. An experiment in which two of the letters are subjected to “ethnopoetic transcription” shows the nature and extent of the oral idiom used by the writers. Two other writers display their literary ambitions through an abundance of paraphrases and hidden quotations. For the museum staff, the sailors' contributions were problematic. The verbal artistry of the writers challenged assumptions that workers' life narratives should be “simple and ingenious descriptions” and transparent sources of ethnological data. Furthermore, the sailors' frankness about Sweden's and their own part in the world wars challenged the myth of the neutrality and peacefulness of the Swedish folkhem.

This dissertation offers to uncover how, between 1527 and 1555, the establishment of the French verse epistle as a poetic genre paradoxically happened through a diminishing of its status, from the prestigious Ovidian héroïde to the “low” familiar type criticized by Du Bellay in his Deffence et Illustration de la langue Françoise (1549). It argues that the marotique-type printed collections, which are built around the assertion of a strong auctorial figure, played a great part in this transformation, as they proved to be a designated supporting medium for the “personalization” of the epistle. The first part of this thesis analyzes from a diachronic perspective the interplay between the poetic establishment of the genre and its anthologization: this led to the singling out of a first period in which poets explored the genre through the debuting medium of the recueil d’auteur (1527-1532), a second period that consecrated the printed familiar epistle (1532-1549) and a third period during which epistles’ authors redefined the genre in order to challenge Du Bellay (1549-1555). The next part investigates the way printed epistolary collections reflect a specific image of the genre, which asserts itself by highlighting its own modest status, whether this means hiding its Horatian background, emphasizing the humble social status of the poet or elaborating a decorum that revolves around marginality. Finally, a third part analyzes the dispositio of several emblematic epistolary collections, arguing that the order through which the epistles were displayed was orientating the readers’ reception of the genre as well as expressing the singularity of the epistolary poetics elaborated by our authors.

Previous issue date: 2015-08-30 / This master‟s research‟s theme is the education to civility, analyzed by the device of
educational formation, the epistolary manual Novo Secretario Portuguez ou Código Epistolar,
by JI Roquette, seeking to contribute with the History of Education, highlighting the historical
importance of manuals on the constitution of reading and writing formation. The idea of
civility is understood as the education of body and soul, for it molds the subject to the social
patterns seen as „distinguished‟ in society interaction. Manuals have constituted important
devices to education as a way of formation. Also in the Brazilian civilizing project, in which
occurred the production, editing and publishing of entire books, exclusively for teaching the
writing of letters and with the circulation of models in Paraíba – research scenario and trade
evidence copies of epistolary manuals through the sale of ads that title in nineteenth-century
newspapers. The research methodology began with reading Novo Secretario Portuguez ou
Código Epistolar, considering it‟s been working for centuries and its historical relevance, as a
formation device in Brazilians education, establishing strategic ways of how to form a
national identity, in the midst of the construction of a modern e civilized country. Another
reading took place, through the content and elements of the perigrafia of the epistolary
manual, concerning the teaching of how to write letters. This book makes part of the
pedagogic press category of education to civility, teaching rules, conduct patters and letter
styles for the population, making legit the daily social contact. It‟s noticeable that the act of
writing was considered by Roquette as a practice that revealed the subject and his ways as
good manners person, distinction object, tuning with values recommended by those times
elite. The content in the manual demonstrate that the protocol education also occurred in the
way of writing letters, using a proper manual for this intention, using specific cases and
personalities examples, chosen as models to be followed. The discussion of the dissertations
theme was based in some important theorist that developed studies about civility, books
history and epistolary manuals in the international, national e regional scene.
Manuais Epistolares no âmbito do cenário internacional, nacional e regional.

“Something has to give”: Exploring The Negotiation of Masculinity and Identity of Gay Males in SportBlack, Jeffrey J. 11 1900 (has links)
The institution of sport has an extensive history of heterosexism, and homophobia, making sport a problematic and unsafe space for gay-identified males. The lack of representation of gay athletes in professional sports highlights the risks associated with openly identifying one’s sexual identity within athletic settings, as gay-identified players often are faced with discrimination and harassment. As a result, gay-identified athletes may choose not to be open about their sexual identity or leave sports altogether as a way to avoid being subjected to discrimination and marginalization within athletics.
Grounded in queer theory, and engaging in phenomenology and arts-informed inquiry, this study seeks to explore the ways in which gay-identified males involved in sport negotiate their identies and masculinities. After each participant was interviewed, he wrote a letter to his past self as a way to share what he had come to learn about his process of coming into his own identity and negotiating masculinity. The study interrogates how gay males experience team-based competitive sports differently than individually-based sports and personal fitness activities. Additionally, it explores the personal process of defining and embracing masculinity. Deconstructing the definition of hegemonic masculinity, this study explores how masculinity can be understood in multiple ways. Changing the heterosexist and homophobic discourse that informs the organization of sport on multiple levels creates more opportunities for gay-identified athletes to be welcomed into the arena of sport and safely access the benefits associated with competitive sports and healthy active living activities. This study brings light to the emotional and psychosocial consequences that stem from homophobia and heterosexism’s dominance in our society. The perpetual discrimination and marginalization faced by those who identify as gay males highlights the need for social work’s involvement in justice-oriented research and practice as a way to bring greater equality and equity into our communities. / Thesis / Master of Social Work (MSW)
