Pippi Goes Abroad : A comparative study of the British and American translations of neologisms, nonce words and proper nouns in Pippi LongstockingMoats, Madelene January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyze two literary translations of Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Långstrump (Lindgren, 1945) from Swedish into English. The study compares the British and the American English translations of neologisms, nonce words and proper nouns. The primary data chosen for this study are the Swedish children’s book Pippi Långstrump (1945), written by Astrid Lindgren, and its 1954 British translation, by Edna Hurup, as well as the 1977 American English translation, by Florence Lamborn. The method used in this study is qualitative, and consists of an in-depth analysis of representative examples of neologisms, nonce words and proper nouns. Three research questions aimed at finding out what translation procedures were used, whether there were any differences between the two translations, and whether there were any semantic changes in the two translations. The conclusion is that the most common translation procedure used is equivalence. The most distinguishing difference between the two translations is that the American English translation seems to stay more true to the original text, whereas the British translation has a greater respect for the target text reader, in the sense that it is more culturally adapted than the American English translation. There were no major semantic changes in the samples from the two translations, with the exception of a few examples. In conclusion, both translators manage to maintain the atmosphere of the original text.

From Pettson and Findus to Festus and Mercury...and Back Again: A Comparison of Four Translations of Sven Nordqvist's Picture BooksYoxsimer Paulsrud, BethAnne January 2006 (has links)
In order to examine how children's literature might be translated, two different English translations of two Swedish picture books have been analyzed. The original Swedish books are Rävjakten and Pannkakstårtan by Sven Nordqvist. Rävjakten was translated as The Fox Hunt in 1988 and as The Fox Hunt in 2000. Pannkakstårtan was translated as Pancake Pie in 1985 and as The Birthday Cake in 1999. Literary translation in general, specific translation issues for children's literature, and trends in international English style have been considered. Analysis of the four texts has been made, with consideration given to the following areas: changes in illustrations, layout, or format; text changes; lexical choices; and retention, deletion, or modification of names and culturally specific references. The analysis revealed that the following tendencies were true for the later translations: foreignization of the text, word-for-word translation of the text, and a neutral international English variety.

Based on the translation of ten short stories from the book Ainda Orangotangos by Paulo Scott (2003) into English, this research aims at carrying out a partial analysis of the translation process regarding cultural and narratological elements. In order to carry out this analysis, three fields of study were contemplated: Comparative Literature, Translation Studies and Narratology. Comparative Literature makes such interdisciplinarity possible and validates literary translation as its object of study since, according to Carvalhal (2003), a literary translation can be considered creative material to the extent that it also constitutes creative effort. The first chapter addresses the cultural issues much explored by Translation Studies. Martínez (2001), Newmark (1988) and Aixelá (1996) propose some definitions and classifications of cultural elements useful for reflection, while the latter two, Venuti (1992) and Sun (2012), indicate possible approaches for translating these elements. Even though we appreciate the proposition by Aixelá (1996) and Venuti (1992) that foreignization should be propagated at the expense of domestication, the proposition by Sun (2012) of balancing accuracy and acceptability was considered better aligned with a realistic translation. Finally, Aixelá (1996) develops a set of translation techniques that are going to be employed to achieve such balance. The second chapter discusses the narratological issues and proposes a dialogue between Narratology and Translation Studies. Authors such as O'Sullivan (2003), Cavagnoli (2008), Nunes (2012) e Boase-Beier (2014) state that the translator is both reader and (re)writer of the text to be translated, and that such reading has to be deeper since narrative issues are as important as the cultural ones to conceive a literary text as a whole. In order to perform such special reading, we propose employing the narratological concepts by Genette (1980) and Bal (2007). Translating is therefore an interpretative task and transposes not only meaning, but also the form of that meaning.

Esta pesquisa é parte de um projeto maior, o PETra – Padrões de Estilo de Tradutores, coordenado pela Profa. Dra. Os resultados encontrados nesta pesquisa mostram que a tradutora Irene Matthews tende a usar estratégias que podem ser identificadas como características de normalização / This thesis aims at analyzing the translation of words considered recurring and preferred in the novel As mulheres de Tijucopapo, by Marilene Felinto, as well as observing possible tendencies of normalization by the translator Irene Matthews in the translation to English: The women of Tijucopapo. This research is part of a bigger project, the PETra (Padrões de Estilo de Tradutores), coordinated by Doc. Diva Cardoso de Camargo. The methodology employed is that of corpus-based translation studies (proposed by Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2004; Scott‘s study concerning normalization, 1998; and Camargo‘s research studies, 2005, 2007), and that of corpus linguistics (Berber Sardinha‘s study, 2003, 2004). We also base our study on Felinto‘s critical heritage (studies by Araújo, 2006; Bailey, 2010; Fiorucci, 2009; Gonçalves, 2001; Jacomel, 2008; Santos, 2005; Schmidt, 2009; Vieira, 2001; Wanderley, 2009, and Xavier, 2003). The research was carried out by means of a combination of semi- manual and computerized analyses. Initially, we used the computer software WordSmith Tools to obtain the frequency of the words in Felinto‘s book. Then, we went on to use the tool KeyWords to identify which would be the keywords in the author‘s novel. After collecting these data, we used Felinto‘s critical heritage in order to select five words that could be considered as recurring and preferred in Felinto‘s writing: 'homem‘ ('man‟), 'mulheres‘ ('women)‘, 'chuva‘ ('rain‘), 'amor‘ ('love‘) and 'égua‘ ('mare‘). Based on Scott (1998), we analyzed the translation of the five selected words in relation to nine normalization features. The results obtained in this study show that the translator Irene Matthews tends to use strategies that may be identified as features of normalization

Based on Gérard Genette!s concepts, this work focuses on the relationships between narration, discourse and diegesis in Tutaméia, by João Guimarães Rosa, and its German version. Our goal is to locate transformations generated by translation regarding those three narrative dimensions and their dynamics. Focusing mainly in the transposition into German of the original!s peculiar narrative syntax, our research discusses possible meaning effects that may have been lost in translation, or may have been created by the translation process. Narratology, literary semiotics and the descriptive model of translation modalities by Francis Aubert provide a base for approaching the matter of literary translation. Based on comparisons between the initial paragraphs of the forty narratives in the source-text and target-text, we contemplate narration – or the act of producing narrative discourse – from the point of view of three enunciation elements: person, time and space. Changes caused by the translation process in some of these elements result in different effects of meaning. Our analysis comprises two additional angles, having for reference critical readings of Rosa!s work in its original language: one angle focuses that work as a whole, having as a starting point its narratives and their effect as a unity; the other angle focuses on the narrative entitled “Curtamão” and its metalinguistic and metatextual qualities, verifying to which extent they can be found in the German translation. The results indicate that, even though the translation attempts to preserve the diegesis dimension and conquer the most challenging passages of this text characterized by transgression, it tends to fill the voids created by the unusual narrative discourse, especially referring to the use of verbal modes, suppressing almost entirely the effects... / The objective of this study is to present a critical translation of some short histories from the book Contes cruels (1883) by Villiers de l’Isle-Adam (1838-1889). The texts chosen are divided into two groups: the first is composed by the short histories “Véra”, “L’Intersigne” and “Souvenirs occultes”, translated into Portuguese in two editions (VILLIERS DE L’ISLE_ADAM, 1971, 1987) and whose analyses were developed in the Master Dissertation – “O universo simbólico em Contes cruels de Villiers de l’Isle-Adam” (DOMINGOS, 2004); the second group was chosen considering one of the specific objectives in this thesis, that is, the translation of some short stories that had never been translated into Portuguese: “Vox Populi”, “Fleurs de ténèbres”, “La Machine à Gloire”, “Sentimentalisme”, “A s’y méprendre” and “L’Inconnue”. In this research, the analyses pointed to ways of reflecting about the translation process which involves specific, discursive, poetic narrative procedures used by the author. It was possible to highlight some stylistic procedures found in Villiers’ discourse, which are extremely productive and are especially concerned with the condensed characteristic of the short story, its poetic prose and irony. It was very important to characterize those procedures because this study, devoted to the translation of a poetic literary text, is based on the assumptions of the translation theory and criticism, as well as on the literary criticism. These studies show differences between the act of translating and that of interpreting, and the translator should find adequate forms of translation as a way to fulfill the criterion that involves the production of the same effect, found in the departure text, in the target text. In general, the proposed critical edition is intended to present illuminating notes about... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Traduttori Traditori: The Tasks of the Creative “Traitor” and the Problematic of Translation (Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, José Martí, and Octavio Paz)January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Every act of communication, and therefore, reading, are in themselves acts of translation and interpretation, as the reader creates a mental representation or reconstruction of the text, extrapolating meaning from it. Interlinguistic translation adds another dimension to these hermeneutic processes, and in the movement through space and time, constant re-interpretation, new translations, and, often, modern theories and perspectives, can interfere with or bring clarity to the meaning of the original text, as well as add to the myth-creation of the writers themselves.
This study centers on some of the great literary figures in poetic and essayistic production in the world of Spanish-speaking letters: Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, José Martí, and Octavio Paz. These figures represent not only important literary movements going from the baroque to modernismo, to the vanguardia and to the creation of the self-conscious “modern” poet, but also are among the most well known Spanish-language writers in the English-speaking world. They are all self-aware creators, who, in distinct ways, join poetry, critical essays and theory that are at once an extension of and revolve around their personal poetics, projected toward the currents of their respective epochs.
Finding problematic moments in translation theory and practice, and studying them in the context of the analysis of these great literary figures, at the same time contributes to a new understanding of translation theory itself. These ‘case studies’ expose certain key moments of existing translations, moments that later contribute to critical and interpretive dialogue in a type of hermeneutic spiral of influence. They also show the importance of translation as a contribution to cultural changes and literary movements. This ultimately aids in the understanding of the important points of contact between the many worlds occupied by these great writers and the ways in which they, and in turn, their translators, recreate the contexts in which they were produced. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Spanish 2016

A reescritura de Katherine Mansfield por Érico Veríssimo : análise descritiva da tradução para o português da obra "Bliss and other stories" /Gonçalves, Letícia de Souza. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: The present work intends to analyze the translation into Portuguese of some of the short stories of Bliss & other stories, by Katherine Mansfield, done by the writer Érico Veríssimo. We propose a comparison of the translation with the source text in order to evaluate the solutions of translation found in the transmission of the sense effects proposed by the author and, consequently, to approach the writer's translator character , because it is a branch of his professional activity that isn't spread frequently, although it has been of extreme relevance to his subsequent literary works. So, we verified if the translator presents what Ohmann denominates "stylistic intuition". In a first instance, we presented a survey of the main theories concerning translation and the deconstructionist theory of Jacques Derrida, on which we were based for the accomplishment of the appreciation of the translations. The study of the relationship between Katherine Mansfield and Érico Veríssimo through the translation perfects translation studies, since it allows analyzing the posture of a writer/translator before a poetic prose. And, finally, the New Zealand writer's short stories and their translations, done by Érico Veríssimo, were analyzed in order to formulate the due conclusions. We took as theoretical base the deconstructionist theory, as well as considerations from specialists in translation studies, such as Francis Henrik Aubert, José Paulo Paes, Haroldo of Campos, and others. / Mestre
