Exploring dialogic teaching with middle and secondary English language arts teachers : a reflexive phenomenology

The ways in which teachers and students speak to each other in middle and secondary English language arts classrooms is integral to the type of learning that occurs there. Ways of engaging in “classroom talk” can be characterized as teacher-centered or student-centered. Teacher-centered classroom talk typically unfolds as a sequence of three steps – a teacher asks a question with a predetermined answer, a student responds, and the teacher evaluates the response. In contrast, student-centered classroom talk is engaging, collaborative, and reciprocal – in these scenarios, teachers and students both ask questions that have multiple answers, students talk to other students, and the discussions grow organically. Working with students in the student-centered way is called dialogic teaching, and while we know dialogic teaching is beneficial to student learning, we also know engaging in this type of teaching is fraught with difficulties. This study sought to explore these difficulties by examining the lived experience of dialogic teaching through the perspectives of six middle and secondary English language arts teachers. The study offers portraits of each teacher’s respective experiences as well as themes that cut across all the teachers’ experiences. Insights are offered about dialogic teaching in terms of lesson planning and attitudes toward students; these insights are termed dialogic by design and dialogic by disposition, respectively.

Développement d'un nouveau concept de cible pour faisceau de protons au CERN/ISOLDE / Development of a new target concepts for proton beams at CERN/ISOLDE

Le sujet de cette thèse est le développement d'une cible liquide haute puissance capable de gérer les contraintes liées a un impact de faisceau de protons de haute puissance (de l'ordre du GW en quelques ms) tout en optimisant la production d'isotopes a court temps de demi-vie (ici, l'intérêt se porte sur du Mercure, de temps de demi vie 130 ms). L'objectif est d'améliorer l'extraction des particules élémentaires d'intérêt pour les physiciens une fois celles-ci créées. La thèse a été principalement préparée au CERN (Genève, Suisse). De plus en plus, la puissance des faisceaux primaires envoyés sur les cibles augmente jusqu'à atteindre plusieurs centaines de kiloWatt, créant ainsi de nouvelles problématiques et de nouveaux défis. De nouveaux concepts de cibles ont ainsi vu le jour. Parmi eux, une boucle liquide utilisant du Plomb Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) comme matériau de cible, et dans lequel un échangeur de chaleur et une pompe sont intégrés, a été proposée durant la phase de développement du projet EURISOL. Ce concept prévoit de plus de transformer le liquide irradié sous forme degouttes de manière à faciliter l'extraction des isotopes créés et ainsi d'augmenter la production d'isotopes à court temps de demi-vie. Cette thèse présente le développement de ce design. Un prototype a été développé et sera testé sous faisceau de protons à ISOLDE au CERN. Plusieurs outils analytiques pour l'étude et la conception de cible haute puissance sont proposés, prenant en considération divers paramètres de design. Ces outils peuvent être utilisés pour d'autres cibles haute puissance et permettent un dimensionnement simple de ce genre de cible. De plus, un design innovant d'échangeur de chaleur est présenté, permettant d'extraire une puissance constante pour différentes températures de LBE. Le design proposé est validé grâce à divers outils numériques et analytiques. De plus, des tests expérimentaux ont été réalisés pour valider la faisabilité de douche. Des gouttes de 400 um ont été obtenues. La cible proposée est la première combinant l'utilisation d'une chambre de diffusion où la douche est créée, avec une pompe et un échangeur de chaleur. Les concepts avancés peuvent être utilisés pour ledéveloppement de cibles similaires dans d'autres instituts. / The subject of this thesis is to design a liquid target able to account for the stress induced by the impact of a highpower proton beam (of the order of GW in few ms) and to optimize the isotopes production of species with short half-life (here, the isotope of interest is a Mercury one, with a half-life of 130 ms). The objective is to improve the extraction of elementary particles of interest for physicists. The thesis was mainly conducted at the CERN (Geneva, Switzerland).More and more, the power of primary beam sent onto targets increases until reaching several kiloWatts of magnitude, inducing new problematic and challenges. Consequently, the need of new target design arises and leads to new conceptual design proposal. Amongst them, a concept of Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) loop target making use of an heat exchanger (HEX) and a pump has been proposed during the European project EURISOL Design Study. This concept proposed an improvement in terms of release efficiency of short-lived species by transforming the irradiated liquid into droplets shape. This thesis presents the development of this target design proposal. A prototype target has been developed and will be tested under proton beam at ISOLDE at CERN. Several analytical tools for the study of this kind of targets are proposed, taking into account different design parameters. These tools can be applied for other high power target concept and allow an easy dimensioning of this kind of targets. As well, an innovative heat exchanger is developed, allowing to extract constant power out of the target for different LBE temperature. The proposed target design is validated thanks to different numerical and analytical tools while experimental tests have been conducted in order to assess the droplet formation feasibility. These tests prove that a shower of droplets of 400 ¿m is possible. The developed target is the first one combining a diffusion chamber where a shower is created combined with a pump and a HEX. The concepts of this design could be applied for similar targets that could be developed in other facilities.

Chinese religious life in Victoria, BC 1858-1930

Between 1858 and 1930, Victoria’s Chinese immigrants brought their homeland religions to the Canadian city of Victoria BC. They experienced a broad range of challenges as they attempted to fit into the mainstream society. This continual struggle affected their religious lives in particular as they sought to adjust in ways that helped them deal with racial discrimination. As a result, Chinese folk religions, especially those emphasizing ancestral worship, became intertwined with local Chinese associations as a way of strengthening the emotional connections between association members. Some associations broadened their membership by adding ancestral deities or worshiping the deity of sworn brotherhood in a bid to create broader connections among the Chinese men who dominated Victoria’s Chinese community. At the same time, Christians, who practiced the religion of Victoria’s mainstream society, reached out to the Chinese, at first by offering practical language training and later by establishing missions and churches that focused on the Chinese. Many Chinese immigrants welcomed English classes and the social opportunities that churches provided but resisted conversion, as the discrimination they faced in mainstream society had left them sceptical about Christianity, which was seen as closely linked to the dominant Western culture. However, Chinese attitudes towards Christianity became more favorable after the 1910s, when the patriotism of Chinese immigrants led them to support revolutionary leader Sun Yat-sen and his new Chinese government, which promoted Christianity as a symbol of modernity. In general, the Chinese in Victoria were not especially enthusiastic about religion, whether Chinese folk religion or Christianity, although women were generally more interested in religion than men. Although many Chinese pragmatically sought comfort and assistance from both religions, they followed Confucian orthodoxy in focusing primarily on daily life rather than religious life. At the same time, over the decades between 1858 and 1930 both Chinese folk religion and Christianity affected the Chinese community as this community adopted a mixture of Western and Eastern cultures, including religious elements from both cultures. / Graduate / 2020-08-20

<p>The study aims to demonstrate the significance of educators lived experiences of stimulating children's physical development. It has been noted that children are occupying themselves with more and more sedentary activities, which may lead to that they do not develop motor skills at the pace expected. To understand educators lived experiences from a phenomenological hermeneutic perspective empirical relevance has been collected through narrative interviews. The results shows that educators find it difficult to understand the Curriculum goals for motor activity and that the desire to stimulate motor development is great, but the realization is conspicuous by its absence. The discussion highlights educator’s commitment and motivation and the importance of being a reflecting practitioner.</p> / <p>Syftet med studien är att belysa innebörder i pedagogers levda erfarenheter av att stimulera barns motoriska utveckling. Det har uppmärksammats att barn sysselsätter sig med allt mer stillasittande aktiviteter, vilket kan leda till att elever inte utvecklar motoriken i den takt som förväntas. Empirin har samlats in genom narrativa intervjuer för att kunna tolka pedagogers levda erfarenheter ur ett fenomenologisk hermeneutiskt perspektiv. Resultatet visar att pedagoger har svårt att tolka läroplanens mål för motoriken och att viljan till att stimulera till motorisk utveckling är stor, men handlandet lyser med sin frånvaro. Diskussionen belyser pedagogers engagemang och motivation samt vikten av att vara en reflekterande praktiker.</p>

<p>Since the year 2005 listed companies are supposed to use international accounting standards when they set up their group accountancy. One thing that has changed with the new standards is the accounting of goodwill and long-lived intangible assets. Earlier companies were supposed to write of their goodwill during the years they had expected the extra profit to arise. According to the new regulation, an impairment test shall be done annually, as well as when there is an indication of decreased value. According to IAS 36 point 134, the company shall provide information in their accountancy about the impairment test.</p><p>The aim of this study is to find out if some companies may be willing to reveal less information in their accountancy, and if there are any factors that affect this. We will investigate if there is any relation between how much the three largest owners in each company hold both in equity- and vote share and how much information that is provided in the accountancy. We will also investigate if there is any relation between the expectations of returns from the market and how much information that is provided. The first hypothesis is: If companies are expected to get a high future cash flow, which implies a high market value in relation to book value of equity, then the company will reveal less information conveying much knowledge about the market to their competitors. The second hypothesis claim that if the three largest owners together holds a large equity- vote share, where small asymmetric information exists, then the company should want to disclose less information in their accountancy.</p><p>In this research we analyse the accountancy of each company listed at the OMX exchange by 31 Dec 2005. To see how much information that is disclosed in the accountancy, we have chosen to analyse how and if the companies accomplish their accounting according to IAS 36 point 134. To be able to compare how much information the companies provided about this, we have created a score structure. Furthermore we have used SPSS to make a regression analysis, which should show if there are any relations. Our results however show that there is no relation between how much information that is given and how large the market value compared to book value of equity is. Neither did we find any relation between how large the three largest owners where and how much information that was provided. Our results differ from earlier studies. One cause for that might be that we only picked three variables, while their studies could have included a lot more variables. The experience of adolescents living in households with mothers who are HIV/Aids positive

<p>South Africa is reported to have the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS infections in Sub-Saharan Africa. As a result the quality of life of families living with HIV/AIDS is negatively affected. Literature indicates that the majority of affected persons are young children and adolescents whose siblings or parents are infected with HIV/AIDS. Most affected adolescents are reported to have difficult social lives due to their parent&rsquo / s illness, difficult financial situations at home, stigma and discrimination within the society. The study attempts to explore the experiences of adolescents in households where the mother is HIV/AIDS positive. This research project is an exploratory study using a narrative approach within a qualitative methodological design. The study was conducted with 6 Xhosa-speaking adolescent boys (2) and girls (4) aged 12 to 15 years. An open-ended interview schedule was used to prompt participants to tell their stories. Data was collected by means of a voice recorder in order for adolescents to tell their stories. The responses were transcribed verbatim, translated and verified with the participants. The data were analysed by means of narrative analysis. The results indicate that most adolescent participants were coping with the mother being HIV/AIDS positive and maintained hope for their futures. Adolescents were coping due to support from friends and relatives. Some adolescents experienced rejection and discrimination. The biggest challenge in the home was due to socioeconomic status. The study is intended to benefit the community in terms of making recommendations to social workers at NGO&rsquo / s and the government sectors in terms of strengthening the existing support programmes in the community.</p>

The aim of the study was to describe what it's like to live with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and experiences of social support and being received and met by health personnel. The method was a qualitative interview study of descriptive design and was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Three women and two men (26-75 years) with MS from two municipalitiesin central Sweden participated in the study. The main results showed that the participants felt the disease limited everyday life. The majority described feelings of injustice being affectedby the illness, but they now have a new perspective on life. Participants described lack of information and communication from health personnel. All felt there is a long wait to get appointments in specialist care and says it depends on too few staff. Participants felt that being received and met by health personnel have been good, some describes that lack of time and staff may influence the response from health personnel negatively. The conclusion was that the participants daily life was limited by the disease in various extent and could lead to strong feelings. Several felt they learned to live with the disease because of a positive attitude and persistence. Participants felt it was important to get information, rehabilitation, and that health personnel listened. However, the participants experienced long wait to get access to specialist care, and that the main support they got from there was through telephone contact.

Undergoing a self-study using the method of currere (Pinar, 1976), I examine my own learning as holistic, embodied, and relational in the context of my mother’s garden. Specifically, I explore my mother’s garden as a site of relational learning that intersects with various classrooms that feature in my educational experiences. The garden and the classroom intersect with/in one curricular landscape, where self and other engage in an embodied process fostering connections and knowledges about each other and place. In bringing forth my narrative through currere, I engage in reflective and reflexive praxis through journal writing, poetry, meditation, and photographic collage. Using these forms of expression, I reflect upon my experiential learning process, analyze issues and concepts related to the body-in-movement, as well as focus on community connections and ecology-based learning as pedagogical praxis.
