A qualitative interview study of young women's lived experience of the transition to womanhood

Svensson, Caroline January 2018 (has links)
Previous studies of the transition to womanhood are few, outdated or primarily quantitative, mainly focused on marginalized groups or studied with a pathological approach. To my knowledge, the transition to womanhood in Swedish women of the majority culture has not yet been investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the lived experience of the transition to womanhood of the majority culture in Sweden. Ten individual, semi-structured interviews with women (nine with female sex, one with male sex) between the ages of 19-22 (mean = 19.8 years) were conducted and analyzed by thematic content analysis with a phenomenological approach. The analysis resulted in four themes: The transition, The body, The feelings and The womanhood. The findings revealed the transition to womanhood as a complex, active process consisting of several interacting developmental areas. Individual conditions, background experiences and sociocultural factors are of importance for what the transition contains, and how it is perceived. The current social perception of equality, gender-neutrality and the importance of self-worth, have a major impact on the experience of the transition to womanhood. The transition is primarily about shaping life and identity according to one's own needs and interests. This study also showed that social support and gender freedom contributes to well-being during the transition to womanhood.

A phenomenological study of students with hidden disabilities in higher education : a cross sectional study of learning support needs in a university in the UK

Shepherd, Rosemary January 2018 (has links)
This phenomenological study was designed and conducted in a Post 1992 ‘new university’ situated in the UK. The aims of the study were a) to investigate inclusive practice amongst disabled students in higher education, b) to explore students’ perceptions on their lived experiences of the support provided c) to explore disabled students’ experiences of the process in gaining support d) to identify the kind of practices disabled students used to support their own effective learning in HE. A sample of 14 students, aged 19 to 56 volunteered to participate in the study. The study was underpinned by inclusive theory and equality policy provided for higher education institutions. Rich data from phenomenological interviews was analysed using thematic and narrative analysis. Analysis of the data uncovered new knowledge for lecturers and support staff in understanding disabled students’ lived experiences as they approached support systems and classrooms in higher education. The key findings involved a) barriers to communication and collaboration between students and lecturers, b) attitudes of staff and the asymmetries of power experienced by students in accessing support, c) issues around student anxiety, dependence and independence and ownership of learning, d) the idea that a reasonable adjustment could be unreasonable and embarrassing and evidence of tokenism in supporting students. The recommendations included a) the need for more in-depth training for all staff in equality and inclusive practice and inclusive course design, b) more support for students in negotiating their Study Needs Assessment, c) bridging the communication gap between Student Wellbeing, lecturers and students. The changes in funding to the Disabled Students’ Allowance came into force during 2016 which has consequently reduced or removed support for students who have disclosed a disability. Due to such changes, it will be even more important for universities to support the training of students, lecturers and support staff in creating and maintaining more inclusive environments in the future.

Lived experiences of nurses caring for adolescents with mental health problems in a psychiatric hospital in the Western Cape Province

Satani, Patricia Nomasizakhe January 2013 (has links)
Magister Curationis - MCur / Mental health care for adolescents is currently provided in a range of settings world-wide. These include the pediatrics units, general hospitals and specialized in-patient units for adolescents. However, care in these specialized units has hitherto not been evaluated. A phenomenological approach as a method and design was chosen to enable participants to describe and explore the lived experiences of nurses caring for adolescents in specialized psychiatric units of the selected psychiatric hospital. A purposive sampling method was used to select respondents. In-depth interviews were conducted with nurses caring for adolescents with mental health problems. Data saturation was reached with seven respondents. Interviews were recorded with a tape recorder that was only accessible to the researcher. Data analysis followed Collazi’s style that included listening to the recorded data, transcribing, coding, and intuition, reflection, reducing and interpreting the data. Ethical clearance was obtained from University of the Western Cape Higher Degrees Committee. The researcher requested permission to conduct the study at selected Psychiatric hospital from the Medical Superintendent and research ethics committee. Informed consent was also sought for those who agreed to participate in the study. Participants remained anonymous as their identity was not revealed. Only information related to the study was collected. Anonymity was assured by omitting names from transcripts as participants were given numbers only rather than using their names. The in-depth interviews were conducted in a quiet office to ensure privacy and confidentiality.

Lefranc, Elisabeth 26 June 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to make both a theoretical and operational contribution, concerning the measure of the lived experience as a key factor to an effective customer experience management.Based on practice, our approach relies on research from different academic fields: economics and service management, quality management, strategy, marketing, performance management and organizational learning. The customer experience management model we offer has four interacting dimension: intended experience (by the managers), expected experience (by the customers), offered experience (by the company), lived experience (by the customers). Our research proposals are concerned with measuring the differences between the lived experience and the other dimensions. The issue is not only a description of the gaps that may exist between the objectives, referring to the espoused theory in customer experience (eg what is the experience we want to create for our clients?) and the customer’s perception of the achievements, referring to the theory-in-use of the company (eg what is the experience actually offered and how do customers perceive it?). The intention is to also examine how companies can reduce such gaps by engaging in a process of organizational learning leading to a successful customer experience management.

Valle, Laura Regina dos Santos Dela January 2015 (has links)
This research proposes to observe Ruy Duarte de Carvalho’s relationship with the lived space, especially in view of the work Vou lá visitar pastores (2000). Due to his personal inscription in both poetry and plots, the research superficially extends to other works of the author - Como se o mundo não tivesse leste (2008), Os papéis do inglês (2007), Actas da Maianga (2003), As paisagens propícias (2005), Lavra (2005), A câmara, a escrita e a coisa dita...(2008), A Terceira Metade (2009) e Desmedida (2010) - in order to trace a brief biographical overview of Duarte. We note that, for the author, the space transcends the limits of physical reality, since it is also the space of creation and fiction. For the 'other', this lived space is the extension of life itself, because this relation of belonging establishes a collective agreement between the subjects and the place. Ruy Duarte committed much of his life in the study of these relations, and therefore was willing to go live with them. Therewith, we sought to examine these issues, because from such experiences one has more authority to report about the “other”, as evidenced in the comparison between the experiences of the author and mine. In this sense, the implications that Literature and Anthropology have had for the development of such a writing project were also observed, as well as the way Ruy Duarte incorporates these discourses to create his own literary style. In addition, we seek to give visibility to the work of this important Angolan author, since his work is of great importance for the understanding of African culture. To account for all that, we set up a dialogue with numerous theorists from different disciplines, among which we highlight: James Clifford, Walter Benjamin, Gaston Bachelard, Homi Bhabha, Roland Barthes, Rita Chaves, Laura Cavalcante Padilha, Antonio Candido, Frantz Fanon, Rodolfo Kusch, François Laplantine, Ella Shohat / Robert Stam and Paul Zumthor.

Corpo próprio e cogito tácito em Merleau-Ponty

To overcome this, Merleau-Ponty resorts to notion of body lived and presents an approach about the perception always from the point of view of the perceiver. Thus, the being-in-the-world, located in their surrounding world, is constantly in relationship with this without distinguishable ever. The cogito, therefore, elevated to absolute by Descartes, reverts to “worldly” in this phenomenological philosophy, given that the thought no longer has the power to all “swallow” separate from the world. Being-in-the-world, in short, is to be in an experiential effectiveness, in which subject and world intertwined in a mutuality that form the unique experience possible. Finally, our work will focus on overcoming this phenomenology front of the egoic absolutism left by the intellectualism of Descartes.

In the contemporaneity, such perspectives are observed in areas such as anatomy, physiology, medicine, biology, psychology, among others. The comprehension of the body, which is influenced by the cited perspectives, often suffers from a reductionism which one moment tends to the psychologism, and one another to physicism. An approach which proposes an integral understanding of the body needs to take into account the various and complex aspects which compose it. The thought of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and of Sigmund Freud allows a reading of the body as a live and pulsatory instance which resists to the pretension of an objective definition of the body. The subjectivity which permeates all the corporal parts and mechanisms, as well as the pulsional forces which act on them, subvert all and any pretension of a reductionist framework, and impose on the corporeity a living and amazing character.

Moments, memories, meanings: a narrative documentary lives experience in social design education

Chisin, Alettia Vorster January 2012 (has links)
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Technology: Design in the Faculty of Informatics and Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2012 / The aim of the research is to explore design education and designing as social practice; working with and for others to inform a more sustainable and meaningful future. Ways in which the lived experience of participants in the discipline of design, in the culturally diverse university and community contexts can be harnessed for social benefit, are interrogated. Themes are explored around the value of different world views and forms of knowing in design education to inform design research, in order to extend the knowledge paradigm to include lived experience not only as site of knowledge formation, but also of wisdom acquisition. The thesis presents an amalgamation of professional practice, creative practice and narrative set in qualitative research methods appropriate to the designer and artist who desire to work with lived experience in the academic context. Lived experience informs all we do and each educational event and encounter ought to be appraised and responded to in a contextually sensitive way. An important aspect flowing from this amalgamation is the recognition and analysis of the coexisting relationships of the roles inhering in the educator and the student. In order to immerse oneself in research and teaching, all aspects of the process have to be lived and filtered through the senses. This implies resisting abstractions by grounding research, teaching, design and making in the experience of the moment. The original contribution of this research then, is the synthesis of design, art and narrative writing that accompanied in a parallel line, the academic writing process to culminate in this design folio — a testament to grounding the research project in practice. Pedagogical approaches and lived experience embodied as recontextualised expressions in design teaching, supervision and creative practice, are presented in the folio. The boundaries of qualitative methods were tested with narrative and life writing, autoethnography, poetry, studio observations, extensive journalling, drawing, photography and printmaking processes. The results showed that a phenomenology of the senses in creative work, and locating the designer in her or his biography, is where original and imaginative design resides. Social and cultural aspects are some of the foundation stones of design education and ought to be informants of the creative process until the finish. Furthermore, authentic openness is required in supervision and teaching to facilitate deep listening, interpretation, intuition and “in-seeing” in educational encounters. Finally, being an active creative practitioner in design teaching is as important if not more important than content knowledge in that discipline, since the active practitioner “becomes” the Other through the collective dimension of design work.
