The ecology of photography crowdsourcing : metadata, locality, and cultural representation

Andra, Mihaela Sirbu January 2021 (has links)
This study explores the social and cultural implications of photography and metadata crowdsourcing at the level of smaller communities as a means of preserving, rekindling, and representing local culture. A multiple case study approach is used, each case focusing on various instances of photography crowdsourcing both in and outside the digital environment, in order to quantitatively analyse a hand-picked selection of photographic material, its respective metadata, and the social ecosystem. The study finds that by circulating photographic material within their communities of provenance, the information crowdsourced differs from institutional metadata standards, as communities evaluate the material through its socially embeddedness, its ability to be evocative of a collective memory, and as an active means of reclaiming identities. Crowdsourcing activities of the sort are an alternative means of record making, not bound by issues of copyright or ownership. By taking into account the unique experiences and identities of non-centric communities, the gap between GLAMs and non-affiliated projects can enrich national cultural heritage and possibly reevaluate the importance of the photograph as a socially salient and relevant medium.

Struggles for Symbolic Power: Discourse, Meaning, Nostalgia, and Mobilization in Macau

Castillo, Hio Tong January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation traces the formation of powerful urban discourses in the context of rapid economic transformation in Macau to understand different levels of symbolic production as they are situated within the larger symbolic structure of power. The research is motivated by my attempt to assess the Neo-Marxist utopian proposition about local culture being a possible counter-hegemonic space where revolutionary politics will develop. Exploratory in nature, my research questions are: Can local culture in the forms of personal and localized practices actually generate oppositional politics? Or do they merely serve as marketing tools for the expansion of economic development? What is the role of local culture in the context of Macau’s urban restructuring? To answer these questions, I view the ongoing cultural production of discourse as indications of local culture. Employing the extended case method, I apply reflexive science to ethnography as an ongoing process that looks continually for patterns of situations and elements to inform me about the relationship between local culture and social change. My research adopts a variety of qualitative methods --- I conducted 7 focus groups, 50 in-depth interviews which included life stories and photo-elicitation, critical discourse analysis, as well as extended ethnographic participation. Three types of discourses were identified during fieldwork to understand the formation of local culture with relation to power and social change: authorized, everyday, and mobilizing discourses. Drawing from the theoretical concepts of Pierre Bourdieu such as symbolic power, field, and misrecognition, I connect and map the production of discourses and argue that they represent the macro-, micro-, and meso-levels of a symbolic system whereby authorized discourse (such as political rhetoric and global neoliberal ideology), everyday discourse (such as local narratives and emotions), and mobilizing discourse (such as protest slogans and grassroots campaigns) interact with one another in multiple fields where the struggle over meanings reinforces and creates social relations linked to power positions. My overall argument asserts that discourses should be conceptualized as a symbolic structure—one that provides the organization and transformation of power relations. Since the struggles over symbolic power via the construction and maintenance of effective discourses involve the production, transmission, and transfusion of cultural meanings that provide appropriate frames and positions for social agents who occupy multiple and sometimes overlapping sub-fields (e.g. fields of social activism, politics, everyday life) structured by the larger field of power relations, social change does not transpire in the field of local culture separate from or innocent of hegemonic power relations. In Macau, local culture simultaneously contains both hegemonic and counter-hegemonic frames and arguments. Social change occurs dialectically when agents negotiate their specific sets of economic, political, and ideological interests within the sub-fields they find themselves in by choosing from the reservoir of possible cultural symbols and thereby reproducing part of culture as structure, while repurposing and tailoring them to create new social practices in pursuit of what they deem desirable and valuable. / Sociology

Além disso, o silêncio da cultura pomerana, no bojo da cultura local, se dá sob as abas do poder: religioso, escolar, / The purpose of this thesis is to examine Pomeranian silences and reinventions in the area known as Serra do Tapes, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, regarding oppression by educational institutions. The major theoretical lines are Education, History and Memory. This is a qualitative, exploratory study whose core methodological orientation is ethnography. Therefore, data were collected in a plural and complex fashion, using the following techniques: bibliographical review, document analysis, research-based participation, interviews, informal conversations, dialog rounds, production and analysis of photographs and inventories. Pomeranian immigration to southern Rio Grande do Sul is uniquely different from that by the other immigrant groups (Germans) due to the historical circumstances constitutive of Pomeranians and the process of isolation and silence they experienced in the area. Furthermore, the silence of Pomeranian culture within local culture takes place under the veil of power, whether it is related to religion

A study of emotions and emotional intelligence in Malaysian child and family social workers : the contribution of emotions and emotional intellience in working relationships and decision-making processes of child and family social workers : a Malaysian case study

Ibrahim, Habibie January 2015 (has links)
This research aimed to investigate the contributions of emotions and Emotional Intelligence (EI) to social work practice with children and families in Malaysia. A mixture of methods within an ethnographic approach was used. The Assessing Emotions Scale (AES) (Schutte et al., 2007) was completed by 105 child social workers. The levels of EI and differences in EI according to certain demographic characteristics were identified. Individual interviews with 25 child social workers were conducted to explore their perceptions concerning emotions and EI in the workplace. Observations were carried out over a period of three months to investigate how emotions were expressed in terms of behaviour. The quantitative results showed that levels of EI were high (mean=131.69, SD=12.483). The workers were reported to be emotionally intelligent in perceiving emotions, dealing with their own and others’ emotions and utilising emotions in their professional conduct. There were no significant differences by gender (p-value=0.367 > 0.05), marital status (p-value=0.694 > 0.05), age group F (d=3, 101), P > .05=1.468) or length of service F (d=4,100), P > .05=0.331), but there was a difference with regard to educational level F (d=3,101), P < .05=6.878). The qualitative research findings seemed to show that skills in empathising, expressing and regulating one’s and others’ emotional experiences, as well as religious practice factors, contributed to EI. The qualitative research findings also revealed the strength of religious beliefs in Malaysian social workers, which facilitate the qualities of EI. The present study implies that the spiritual and religious dimension of practice should not be ignored in social work education and training.

A study of emotions and emotional intelligence in Malaysian child and family social workers. The contribution of emotions and emotional intellience in working relationships and decision-making processes of child and family social workers: a Malaysian case study

The qualitative research findings also revealed the strength of religious beliefs in Malaysian social workers, which facilitate the qualities of EI. The present study implies that the spiritual and religious dimension of practice should not be ignored in social work education and training.
