Architektur und Städtebau des Sozialismus haben nach der politischen Wende der Jahre 1989-1991 einen erheblichen Wertungswandel erfahren. Insbesondere die in industrieller Bauweise errichteten Quartiere des komplexen Wohnungsbaus, die einstmals privilegierte Wohngegenden waren, haben heute oftmals den Ruf von „Ghettos“. Die vorliegende Arbeit möchte einen Beitrag dazu leisten, dieses Bild zu korrigieren und das öffentliche Image von Plattenbausiedlungen zu verbessern. Dazu wurde anhand des ostdeutschen Plattenbaugebietes Strausberg-Hegermühle untersucht, welche Faktoren die positive Identifikation der Bewohner mit ihrem Viertel begünstigen. Ziel der Arbeit ist, damit Anregungen für die Praxis lokal engagierter Bürger, Kommunalpolitiker, Wohnungsgesellschaften und Verwaltungen zu geben. Das Wohngebiet „Hegermühle“ in der brandenburgischen Mittelstadt Strausberg wurde in den 1980er Jahren gebaut. Die Bevölkerung Hegermühles war bis 1990 stark durch Mitarbeiter des Ministeriums für Nationale Verteidigung der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik geprägt. Die Wohnungen im Viertel waren wegen ihres hohen technischen Standards begehrt. Nach dem Ende der DDR erfuhr das Viertel einen starken Wandel seiner Sozialstruktur und bekam ein Image, das zwischen den Polen „graue Schlafstadt“ und „sozialer Brennpunkt“ angesiedelt ist. In diesem Wohngebiet wurde im zweiten Halbjahr 2009 eine qualitative Untersuchung durchgeführt. Neben mehreren in Bild- und Textform dokumentierten Feldexplorationen wurde eine Reihe von Interviews mit Personen geführt, die aktuell in Hegermühle wohnen oder früher dort wohnten. Die Auswahl der Interviewpartner erfolgte nach der Methode des Theoretical Sampling (Glaser/Strauss), wobei eine möglichst große Differenzierung des Samples nach Alter, Herkunft, Geschlecht und Beruf angestrebt wurde. Die Interviews wurden nach der Methode des Problemzentrierten Interviews (Witzel) geführt und auf Grundlage des Konzepts der Grounded Theory (Glaser/Strauss) ausgewertet. Für die Arbeit wurden acht Interviews ausgewählt, in denen die Interviewten Auskunft geben über die folgenden Themen: die Umstände ihres Zuzugs nach Hegermühle, die Entwicklung des Wohngebiets seitdem, das Image Hegermühles, ihr eigenes Verhältnis zum Viertel und die Perspektiven des Wohngebiets. Als Ergebnis der Arbeit lässt sich festhalten, dass die positive Identifikation mit dem Wohngebiet am stärksten durch die problematische Sozialstruktur behindert wird, die in hohem Maße von Arbeitslosigkeit und sozialen Desintegrationserscheinungen geprägt ist. Davon abgesehen überwiegen pragmatische Kriterien bei der Bewertung des Wohngebiets. Die gute infrastrukturelle Ausstattung Hegermühles mit Einkaufs-, Betreuungs- und Erholungsmöglichkeiten wurde von allen Befragten positiv hervorgehoben. Diese Faktoren sind jedoch genau so auch in anderen Orten zu finden und damit nicht geeignet, eine Identifikation mit einem spezifischen Ort zu befördern. Von den Befragten wurde daher auch mehrfach auf das Fehlen von Merkmalen hingewiesen, die Hegermühle auszeichnen und es von anderen Vierteln abheben. Dagegen war die Lokalidentität bei den Interviewpartnern am stärksten, die den Aufbau Hegermühles in den 1980er Jahren persönlich miterlebt haben. Die Arbeit schließt darum mit Überlegungen, wie diese Erfahrung einer Ortsgeschichte, die Bedeutung für die eigene Biografie hat, anderen Einwohnern vermittelt werden kann. Zwei mögliche Konzepte werden vorgeschlagen: a) die Erforschung und Vermittlung der Wohngebietsgeschichte, sowie b) die Schaffung und Pflege räumlicher Identifikationspunkte, die die lokale Geschichte, Landschaft und andere Besonderheiten des Viertels im Alltag erfahrbar machen. Beispielsweise können Kunstwerke im öffentlichen Raum oder Gedenktafeln als Anknüpfungspunkte einer ortsbezogenen Identität dienen und ein Gefühl persönlicher Verbundenheit mit dem Wohnort bestärken. Damit könnte unabhängig von pragmatischen Faktoren eine Bindung an den Ort begünstigt und die Bereitschaft der Einwohner erhöht werden, sich für die Verbesserung der Verhältnisse im Wohngebiet einzusetzen. / The judgment on socialism’s architecture and urban design has undergone a large change since the political turn of the years 1989-1991. This is especially true for the industrially built housing estates of the complex housing program, which were once privileged residential areas, but which now have a reputation as “ghettos”. This paper is meant to contribute to the correction of this perception and to the improvement of the public image of “Plattenbau” housing estates. In order to achieve this, research was done in the East German housing estate Strausberg-Hegermühle to find factors which promote positive identification of residents with their neighbourhood. The paper aims at giving suggestions for the work of locally committed citizens, community politicians, residential housing companies and local administrations. The housing estate “Hegermühle” in the medium-sized Brandenburg town Strausberg was built in the 1980s. Until 1990, Hegermühle’s population was dominated by employees of the German Democratic Republic’s Ministry of National Defence. Apartments in the neighbourhood were sought after because of their high technical standard. After the GDR’s demise, the neighbourhood’s social structure changed profoundly. Today, its public image is located between the extremes “boring dormitory town” and “deprived area”. In the second half of 2009, a qualitative enquiry was conducted in this housing estate. Apart from field explorations, which were documented in text and image, a number of interviews was conducted with persons who were living or had formerly been living in Hegermühle. Interviewees were selected according to the method of theoretical sampling (Glaser/Strauss) with the goal of achieving a high differentiation of the sample in terms of age, descent, gender and profession. The interviews were conducted according to Witzel’s method of problem-centered interviews, and they were interpreted on the basis of Glaser’s & Strauss’ grounded theory concept. For this paper, eight interviews were selected, in which the interviewees speak about the following topics: the circumstances of their moving to Hegermühle, the neighbourhood’s development since then, the public image of Hegermühle, their own relationship with the neighbourhood and the housing estate’s future perspective. The results of the conducted research show that the largest obstacle for positive identification with the housing estate is its problematic social structure, which is highly dominated by unemployment and social disintegration. Apart from that, the housing estate is mostly judged by pragmatic criteria. The good infrastructure of Hegermühle, which includes facilities for shopping, child care and recreation, was emphasized by all interviewees. These factors though can be found in the same form in other places. Thus they are not able to serve as a base for identification with any specific place. That is why it was remarked by the interviewees that Hegermühle lacked distinguishing features which separate it from other neighbourhoods. In contrast, those interviewees who had personally witnessed the creation of Hegermühle in the 1980s showed the highest level of local identity. Because of this, the paper ends with reflections on how this experience of a local history of significance to one’s own biography can be shared by other residents. Two possible concepts are proposed: a) exploration and presentation of the housing estate’s history, and b) creation and preservation of spatial points of identification, which make the local history, landscape and other distinguishing features of the neighbourhood perceivable in everyday life. Public works of art or commemorative plaques for example could serve as links for a local identity and could strengthen a feeling of personal connection with the place of living. This could promote a local connection independent from pragmatic factors and increase the residents’ willingness to get involved in the improvement of their housing estate.

El Algar es una pedanía perteneciente al término municipal de Cartagena que desea alcanzar la municipalidad propia ya que sus vecinos se sienten abandonados por el ayuntamiento al que se encuentran incorporados. Este pueblo alcanzó la independencia municipal en el año 1821, experiencia corta por los vaivenes políticos propios del siglo XIX. Sin embargo este episodio histórico quedó en la memoria de la ciudadanía, por lo que vuelve a reivindicarse en 1859, 1873 y 1936. Con la Transición Democrática el movimiento pro-ayuntamiento vuelve a reactivarse hasta la actualidad, pero sin resultados satisfactorios. Pretendemos indagar en el rico simbolismo que vertebra la identidad local y que el movimiento utiliza en su lucha política por un nuevo reparto del poder local. / Local identity and politic action. El Algar’s pro-town hall movement El Algar is a hamlet that belongs to the municipality of Cartagena which wishes to obtain its own municipality because neighbors feel neglected by the city to which they are incorporated. This town archived the municipal independence in 1821, short experience due to the characteristic political up and downs of the nineteenth century. However this historic chapter remained in the citizenship’s memory, and that’s the reason why the independence came back in 1859, 1873 and 1936. With the democratic Transition the pro-town hall movement gets reactivated until nowadays. We try to investigate the rich symbolism that vertebrates the local identity which the movement utilizes in its political fight for a local power sharing.

"Spatial Planning and Social Justice: the paradox of regional decentralization and its impact on the region of Aysén (Chilean Patagonia)" ABSTRACT The following research focuses on the problem of the spatial planning model implemented in Chile -through top-down strategies- during the last forty years, where decentralization has become an almost unreachable task. The concentration of decision-making processes in the central government, and the increasing social and economic inequalities between the fourteen regions and the metropolis of Santiago, have led to a wave of social movements from north to south of the country. The specific case of the social movement of Aysén represented a wake-up call for society, where citizens achieved to organize themselves and demand the integration of their own opinions in decision-making processes in what concerns the territory they inhabit. This movement claimed for the vindication of Aysén as a historically forgotten region by the central government. In other words, the latter calls for spatial justice and recognition of its particularities as a peripheral region. A pesquisa ainda caracterizou-se por um forte viés historiográfico, ao expor, além da história da cidade, a trajetória histórica da imprensa valenciana. / This dissertation investigates the history of Jornal Local, a weekly printed newspaper of Valença, in southern Rio de Janeiro, with the goal of analyzing how this newspaper chronicles the city, and thus what kind of urban space identity the newspaper helps build. For this, we used authors of Cultural Studies as the main reference for the development of the identity issue in contemporary times. In addition, we researched local canonical bibliography for key defining ideas of traditional valencian identity, in order to verify if this is the emerging valencian identity narratives in the Jornal Local. Twelve editions of the newspaper were analyzed, covering the issues of July 18, 2013 to October 3, 2013, using Content Analysis methodology. The goal, more than merely exposing the space dedicated by JL to questioning the valencian identity theme, was to examine how and with how much intensity the newspaper treats the subject. The research was also characterized by a strong historiographical focus, to expose, beyond the city’s history, the historical trajectory of the Valencian press.

The general aim of this thesis is to estimate nature of the man - landscape relationship in selected parts of the Novohradsko region. In the process of working on this thesis, many aspects, which could influence this connection, were considered. One of them was the forced transfer of German population from Czechoslovakia to Germany and Austria after World War II. Different extent of this process was the key to selection of the studied cadastral units. These cadasters were examined from the point of landscape changes and various landscape heritage comparison. The reason for this study was the complexity of the man - landscape relationship and the different aspects which can determine the nature of it. The results were confronted with the local people's perception by interviews. The thesis is structured into several parts. One of the crucial is the theoretical chapter, which presents the various attitudes to landscape, mainly those which emphasize land use discipline, landscape heritage, landscape memory and territorial identity. All these phenomenons appear in the other parts of the thesis. At first, the land use analysis in the South-Bohemian Borderland is made, then selected cadasters are examined in this way as well. In my thesis, I made a qualitative analysis of narrative biographic inteviews and participant observation of the inhabitants of Prague housing estate Stodůlky, in order to find out the way they conceptualize their locality as a place or a space. I explore how the narrators put themselves in the framework of their lived locality and how they divide this locality. Drawing on a similar theorethical distinctions of place and space introduced by Eric Hirsch and Maruška Svašek, I examined if the narrators conceptualisations make evidence of a socially negotiated local identity and if it is the case, how the housing estate Stodůlky emerges as "home". Hirsch's distinction means that time and space appears only through the perceptions of place. In accord with Svašek I dealt with three different forms of identity - territorialized, deterritorialized a reterritorialized identity. These three forms treats identity in rather symbolic way.

Local identity and place branding use as a corporate branding strategy. The case of Länsförsäkringar

This master thesis aims to contribute to the available literature on how place branding can be used for enhancing local identity and how this affects audience participation, in particular: engagement on social media. The case of two campaigns of the Swedish cooperative bank Länsförsäkringar are used to demonstrate the initial hypothesis: local identity and place branding use in campaigns as part of a corporate branding strategy increases followers’ engagement and participation on social media. To that end, essential theoretical concepts in order to understand the research approach and methods are explained in the following sections. For this thesis, the encoding/decoding theory by Stuart Hall is used as theoretical framework, along with some other key theoretical aspects such as identity theory, globalization and place branding.Two different campaigns of Länsförsäkringar are analysed following a mixed approach by carrying out a visual semiotic analysis of the materials (mainly photographies, posters or videos) with an autoethnographic and constructivist perspective, and a social media analysis by looking at the engagement that those campaigns generated on Länsförsäkringar’s social media. The findings show that the use of local identities and local place branding as a corporate branding strategy impacts positively on some types of social media engagement by appealing to the online community’s common origin, heritage and geography.

Ortskaraktär och spetskompetens : En undersökning av ortskaraktärens nutida relevans inom dalknypplingen / Lace and locality : An examination of vernacular heritage in regional bobbin lace traditions in Sweden (Dalarna)

Local identity (Swedish: ortskaraktär) has played a big part in shaping the view of crafts in Sweden during the last century until today. This rapport investigates the history of local identity in the Dalecarlia region, specifically looking at local bobbin lace traditions.  The work endeavours to see how the bobbin lace is made today, what importance the local identity has had on the survival of the craft, and how important local expressions within the lace remains today, as well as why it is still important. To investigate this relationship between local identity and crafts the rapport makes use of primary sources in the form of interviews with active local bobbin lacemakers. The work also relies on archival material on order to put the interviews into a historical context. These archives range from the national to the regional and local level. The material is analysed using the theoretical base of authorised heritage discourse and performativity, and a hermeneutical approach informs the method of analysis.  The rapport concludes that local identity, “ortskaraktär” remains a key factor to the survival of the lace making tradition. But it also recognises that to ensure the continued survival of the craft, a revival might be necessary. The rapport proposes recontextualizing the use of the craft, making it more popular beyond use in folk costume, or a recognition of the craft on the list of immaterial cultural heritages in Sweden. Official recognition might lead to resources being directed towards the preservation of the tradition.

This diploma thesis focuses on the issue of public life on Royal Vineyards in the period of 1880 - 1922. First of all, particular factors that form the image (character, identity) of Royal Vineyards as czech, healthy, modern and independent city with historical tradition, inhabited mainly by middle class population, are analysed. Further more the thesis is discussing czech public life on Vineyards. By the term public life is here meant an analysis of the formation and appearance of vineyard public spaces and cultural facilities and their importance for residents of Vineyards. Thesis is looking into the function of these spaces as a meeting place for various occasions (eg. holding of festivities, place of associational life, leisure activities). In other chapters german and jewish minorities are closer analyzed. Here the thesis focuses on the character of public life of these communities and their coexistence with Czechs. Examined is, among others, the question which aspects that shape the character of Vineards are the particular groups of residents identified with and which of them they considered as their own and how they have symolically inhabited them. Examining the Portland Music Scene through Neo-localism

This study explores the Portland music scene as a context in which local identity is constructed and communicated in a globalized world. Specifically, neo-localism is utilized as a theoretical lens through which the impacts of globalization were explored. Portland bands (n=8) were interviewed concerning their experiences in the local music scene. The results showed that participants conceptualized local identity as being 1) based in community, 2) culturally saturated and 3) connected to musical production. Further, results showed that participants were increasingly aware of this local identity, were aware of a global perception of this local identity and were aware of other local identities. Overall the results from this study support neo-localism as a useful conceptual lens for understanding local identity for Portland bands.
