Gosses d'Italie : les représentations d'une enfance marginale dans le cinéma italien des années 1990 et 2000 / Kids of Italy : representations of marginal childhood in the italian cinema of the 1990s and the 2000s

Carrée, Roland 02 December 2013 (has links)
The 1990s and 2000s were crucial years for Italian cinema and witnessed a relative rebirth following a very critical phase. During that period, a few filmmakers became known for their habit of depicting marginal children confronted with problemscharacteristic of their country and heralding a hopefully better future. They are characters that are handled in a way that differs from that of neorealism, especially on an aesthetic level. The filmmakers’ attitude to the children’s gaze forms part of what defines their marginality but also suggests a degree of interaction, questioning, judgment, or even some difficulty of coming to terms with the world. Most of the films focus on the issue of childhood imagination – more specifically play and dreams – regularly put to the test of reality and existing in parallel with the world of the adults, who are indifferent to it. Thefilms thus suggest the marginality of children of all ages – the child-adult being very much a character of this period of Italian cinema – in a society that does not seem to care about their fate. They also suggest their ability to overcome their problems and to go on living their lives, growing up and perhaps changing the course of Italian society for the better at a time when it is in need of directions.

Facial Difference, Consumer Culture and Being “Normal”

Peacock, Rose, Sargeant, Anita R., Small, Neil A. January 2016 (has links)
yes / The face is not the property of an individual; it is a key part of our communicating body. It is performed, in social interaction (Goffman, 1982) and seen and responded to within historicised and gendered ideals of the normal and of beauty. The normal and the beautiful have a particular resonance in a visually mediated consumer society, “looks matter”. But more than half-a million people in the UK have a significant disfigurement to their face (Changing Faces, 2007). This chapter explores the way facial difference illuminates debates on bodily representation. It explores how people living with visible facial difference invoke discursive formations of disfigurement (Garland-Thomson, 2009). It asks how we encounter and respond to facial difference and examines how close personal relationships can offer a source of support. The chapter contextualises the relevance of the face for communication and then examines implications for social selves in personal communities. Seventeen people living with visible facial difference were interviewed as part of a PhD study and interview extracts illuminate different aspects of the aesthetics of inclusion.

Looks Good To Me (LGTM): Authentication for Augmented Reality

Gaebel, Ethan Daniel 27 June 2016 (has links)
Augmented reality is poised to become the next dominant computing paradigm over the course of the next decade. With the three-dimensional graphics and interactive interfaces that augmented reality promises it will rival the very best science fiction novels. Users will want to have shared experiences in these rich augmented reality scenarios, but surely users will want to restrict who can see their content. It is currently unclear how users of such devices will authenticate one another. Traditional authentication protocols reliant on centralized authorities fall short when different systems with different authorities try to communicate and extra infrastructure means extra resource expenditure. Augmented reality content sharing will usually occur in face-to-face scenarios where it will be advantageous for both performance and usability reasons to keep communications and authentication localized. Looks Good To Me (LGTM) is an authentication protocol for augmented reality headsets that leverages the unique hardware and context provided with augmented reality headsets to solve an old problem in a more usable and more secure way. LGTM works over point to point wireless communications so users can authenticate one another in any circumstance and is designed with usability at its core, requiring users to perform only two actions: one to initiate and one to confirm. LGTM allows users to intuitively authenticate one another, using seemingly only each other's faces. Under the hood LGTM uses a combination of facial recognition and wireless localization to ensure secure and extremely simple authentication. / Master of Science

Kan man döma hunden efter håren? : Om betydelsen av socialsekreterares utseende / About the importance of the looks of social workers

Envall, Görel, Olsson, Linda January 1996 (has links)
Person judgements of social workers were made by clients only on the basis of photos. / Examensuppsats handledd av Bo Edvardsson

Amenitní migrace a regionální identita na Prachaticku / Amenity migration and regional identity in the Prachatice region

Loquenz, Jan January 2011 (has links)
This Thesis called "Amenity migration and regional identity in the Prachatice region" looks into comparing the strenght of regional identity of inhabitants and amenity migrants in the field of interest area ORP Prachatice. Amenity migration is quite new term that can be translated as "pleasure migration". This specific type of migration stems from the hum desire to live in areas with high quality environment. This usualy includes the transition of population from urban to countryside environment. For the use of this Thesis the area of interest was chosen area of ORP Prachatice that consist of three executive offices - PÚ Netolice, PÚ Prachatice and PÚ Volary. The whole area of interest offers on a quite narrow territory three different environments. The aim of this Thesis is the comparison of the level of regional identity among inhabitants in relation to the diverse environment and also the comparison of the strenght of regional identity between the group of permanent inhabitants and amenity migrants. The results of the Thesis which are being evaluated from the questionare research are aiming at the mobility of the population, evaluating the quality of elements of surrounding environment, regional symbolism, the positive and negative side of the region, inhabitant awareness and the subject of...

Discourse Comprehension in L1 and L2 / The role of context in the processing of discourse-bound words

Kohlstedt, Tatiana 22 September 2014 (has links)

Andersson, Josefin, Strömsten, Ebba January 2020 (has links)
The list of influencers who has had cosmetic procedures done can be made long. To mention one example, Bianca Ingrosso with 343 000 followers on Youtube, has spoken openly about her lip fillers (Ingrosso 2020). These types of posts, where influencers talk about how they correct their body, in combination with the fact that young people are a majority of the internet and social media users (Svenskarna och internet 2019) forms the basis of our motivation to conduct this study. This study aims to analyze whether, and if so, how influencers advertising and speech about cosmetic procedures contribute in creating meaning regarding how young women view their own body. This study was conducted with six qualitative interviews, with women in age 15-17. The interviews have been recorded and transcribed and the material has been analyzed to answer our research questions. Throughout our analyzed interviews can we see that influencers' speech and advertising about cosmetic procedures are meaningful regarding young women's attitudes to their own body. Some of the respondents expressed that they felt insecure about their own body after seeing an influencer talk about cosmetic procedures. We can also see that the respondents think that young women as a group of people are affected by influencers' opinions about cosmetic procedures. In the interviews, we can also see that the respondents take part in constructing a dominating beauty ideal on social media and they define the ideal as being skinny, tall and beautiful. Clearly the young women who took part in this study are critical of how influencers talk and do commercials about cosmetic procedures, they think influencers tell others to correct their body. Despite the criticism, the young women in this study are still inspired by influencers, regarding where and what they eat, how they dress and how they work out. We can clearly see some ambivalence in the way the respondents answer as they follow specific influencers while they also are criticizing them.
