Finding and exploiting structure in complex systems via geometric and statistical methods

Grover, Piyush 06 July 2010 (has links)
The dynamics of a complex system can be understood by analyzing the phase space structure of that system. We apply geometric and statistical techniques to two Hamiltonian systems to find and exploit structure in the phase space that helps us get qualitative and quantitative results about the phase space transport. While the structure can be revealed by the study of invariant manifolds of fixed points and periodic orbits in the first system, there do not exist any fixed points (and hence invariant manifolds) in the second system. The use of statistical (or measure theoretic) and topological methods reveals the phase space structure even in the absence of fixed points or stable and unstable invariant manifolds. The first problem we study is the four-body problem in the context of a spacecraft in the presence of a planet and two of its moons, where we exploit the phase space structure of the problem to devise an intelligent control strategy to achieve mission objectives. We use a family of analytically derived controlled Keplerian Maps in the Patched-Three-Body framework to design fuel efficient trajectories with realistic flight times. These maps approximate the dynamics of the Planar Circular Restricted Three Body Problem (PCR3BP) and we patch solutions in two different PCR3BPs to form the desired trajectories in the four body system. The second problem we study concerns phase space mixing in a two-dimensional time dependent Stokes flow system. Topological analysis of the braiding of periodic points has been recently used to find lower bounds on the complexity of the flow via the Thurston-Nielsen classification theorem (TNCT). We extend this framework by demonstrating that in a perturbed system with no apparent periodic points, the almost-invariant sets computed using a transfer operator approach are the natural objects on which to pin the TNCT. / Ph. Interaction of Na, O₂, CO₂ and water on MnO(100): Modeling a complex mixed oxide system for thermochemical water splitting

Feng, Xu 14 October 2015 (has links)
A catalytic route to hydrogen production via thermochemical water splitting is highly desirable because it directly converts thermal energy into stored chemical energy in the form of hydrogen and oxygen. Recently, the Davis group at Caltech reported an innovative low-temperature (max 850°C) catalytic cycle for thermochemical water splitting based on sodium and manganese oxides (Xu, Bhawe and Davis, PNAS, 2012). The key steps are thought to be hydrogen evolution from a Na₂CO₃/MnO mixture, and oxygen evolution by thermal reduction of solids formed by Na⁺ extraction from NaMnO₂. Our work is aimed at understanding the fundamental chemical processes involved in the catalytic cycle, especially the hydrogen evolution from water. In this project, efforts are made to understand the interactions between the key components (Na, O₂, CO₂, and water) in the hydrogen evolution steps on a well-defined MnO(100) single crystal surface, utilizing x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). While some of the behavior of the catalytic system is observed with the model system developed in this work, hydrogen is only produced from water in the presence of metallic sodium, in contrast to the proposal of Xu et al. that water splitting occurs from the reaction of water with a mixture of Na₂CO₃ and MnO. These differences are discussed in light of the different operating conditions for the catalytic system and the surface science model developed in this work. / Ph. D.

Low-power wireless communications in the Internet of Things:solutions and evaluations

Petäjäjärvi, J. (Juha) 29 May 2018 (has links)
Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) is already providing solutions to various tasks related to monitoring the environment and controlling devices over wired and wireless networks. It is estimated by several well-known research facilities that the number of IoT devices will be in the order of tens of billions by 2020. This inevitably brings challenges and costs in deployment, management, and maintenance of networks. The focus of this thesis is to provide solutions that mainly help in the deployment and maintenance of various wireless IoT networks. Different applications have different requirements for a wireless link coverage. It is important to utilize suitable radio technology for a particular application in order, e.g., to maximize the lifetime of a device. A wireless body area network (WBAN) typically consists of devices that are within couple of meters from each other. The WBAN is suitable for, e.g., measuring muscle activity and transferring data to a storage for processing. The wireless link can use air as a medium, or alternatively, an induced electric field to a body can be used. In this thesis, it is shown that a location of the electrodes in the body have impact to the attenuation. Home automation IoT applications are typically implemented with mid-range wireless technologies, known as wireless personal area networks (WPAN). In order to minimize and get rid of battery change operations, a wake-up receiver could be utilized in order to improve the device’s energy efficiency. The concept is introduced and performance of the current state-of-the-art works are presented. In addition, a control loop enabling a passive device to have control over an energy source is proposed. Applications that have low bandwidth requirements can be implemented with low-power wide area networks (LPWAN). One technology – LoRaWAN – is evaluated, and it is recommended as based on the results to use it in non-critical applications. IoT sovellusten laaja kirjo vaatii erilaisia langattomia radioteknologioita, jotta sovellukset voitaisiin toteuttaa, muun muassa, mahdollisimman energiatehokkaasti. Yhden LPWAN teknologian, nimeltään LoRaWAN, suorituskykyä on evaluoitu. Tulosten perusteella suositus on hyödyntää kyseistä teknologiaa ei-kriittisissä sovelluksissa.

Carlsson, Elin, Sörebö, Victoria January 2018 (has links)
I. / The climate changes increases as the population increases. The negative environmental impact is mostly based on the use of raw materials and energy consumption in the production of various products. According to Energimyndigheten (2015), the building sector is the cause of about 40 % of Sweden's total energy use. In order to reduce the energy use goals have been created at both national and international levels. The goals are intended to create a greater understanding of a more energy efficient society for all actors within the construction industry. In addition to create a sustainable development of the building sector one needs to also take in account the social and economic aspects.   This master thesis examined whether two specific standard houses from a small house producer can be adapted to passive houses with a preserved architectural character. The purpose of the study is partly to investigate whether the concept of passive houses can serve as a sustainable concept of building single family houses. The concept of sustainable development has been simplified. The ecological aspect is represented by the energy calculations and possible actions that the standard houses need to achieve in order to meet the requirements for passive houses. The economic aspect is represented by a life cycle cost analysis using the Net Present Value method and the Simple Payback method. The social aspect is represented by an evaluation of changes in living qualities as the standard houses develops to passive houses. The study also presents an alternative design of a passive house with the purpose of improving the accommodation qualities.   The standard houses belong to a small-house-producer, Intressanta hus, who has their main market in Västerås. The houses is represented by a 147m2 villa with one floor and a pulpit roof and a 151m2 villa with two floors and a pitched roof. Due to Intressanta hus geographic location, the typical climate for Västerås has been used in the energy calculations. To add another dimension, opportunities for developing the standard houses to passive houses have also been investigated for the typical climate in Kiruna. Therefore Västerås represents climate zone III and Kiruna represents climate zone I.   The results revealed that it is possible to adapt the standard house with two floors and a pitched roof to a passive house while preserving the architectural character in both climate zones. The standard house with one floor and a pulpit roof is only possible to adjust to a passive house in climate zone III with a preserved architectural character. The life cycle cost analysis using the Net Present Value showed that it is an economical advantage to invest in a passive house in a period of 50 years. The accommodation quality that changes the most is the incident light in the houses and for the passive house with one floor the difference of light is remarkably high in climate zone I.

A Cross-Platform Health Care Application

Eriksson, Rickard, Hemani, Sajjadali January 2015 (has links)
This report describes the development process of the mobile application HealthyWay. The application is developed as a Bachelor thesis project together with KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The applications' main function is to be the interface to a number of wearable medical electronic appliances such as bandages and pill boxes. The communication is done through Bluetooth Low Energy. The application was mainly written in 3 di erent languages, QML, C++ and Java. The most stressed point throughout this project was the importance of platform independence. The exibility had to be done on a scalable as well as on a modular level. With this in mind, QT was used to address the requirement of scalability. The modularity was achieved through an organized structure to the program accompanied by easy directives to introduce new devices. The purpose of the application is to increase the quality of life for the user. This intent could however not be concluded due to the lack of testing among users. In its current state, the application is not yet ready for deployment but instead acts as a framework for future prospects.

Karresand, Helena January 2014 (has links)
Energy use in the residential sector has gradually increased and does not seem to be decreasing in spite of energy efficient appliances. By building low energy homes, housing companies are trying to reduce energy use, and to some extent they are succeeding, although the reductions are confined to heating and hot water. The aim of the thesis is to increase knowledge about household energy use in passive houses focusing on household activities. Interviews were conducted with households and public housing companies to investigate how material conditions, such as the flats and the appliances, affect daily activities in the home. Based on time-geographic concepts, a few everyday household projects are analyzed: cooking, care of clothing and recreation. The concept of energy orders is used to show that the realization of activities is influenced by various kinds of resources, including electricity, and the constraints and opportunities related to them. Since each household is unique, the energy orders also look different, which has an influence on the thermal comfort in the home. The passive house concept as such does not affect household activities in a profound way, but the households try to preserve and spread the spill heat generated in various activities by opening doors to rooms and doors of appliances such as the oven to distribute the heat throughout the flat. One conclusion from the thesis is that, because all households have unique energy orders, material resources also need to be adapted so that activities can be performed in a variety of ways. By taking advantage of household experiences, housing companies may gain access to new ideas and improve functionality so that material conditions suit household needs. By taking advantage of household experiences, housing companies may gain access to new ideas and improve functionality so that material conditions in energy efficient housing are designed to suit a broad range of household needs.

Effets des radiations gamma et des électrons de basse énergie sur la fonctionnalité de l'ADN / Effect of gamma radiation and low energy electron on the DNA functionality

Sahbani, Saloua January 2014 (has links)
// Abstract : It is generally accepted that DNA double-strand breaks (DSB) are among the most toxic lesions induced by ionizing radiation (IR). Unrepaired or misrepaired DSB can lead to genomic instability and cell death. It is known that concomitant chemoradiation therapy is one of the most preferred methods for the treatment of certain cancers especially in advanced stage. The yield of DSBs was increased when DNA was irradiated with low energy electron (LEEs). The aims of our study was to reassess the contribution of DSBs and other lesions induced by indirect and direct effect of IR in cell lethality. The effect of IR on the DNA functionality of the plasmid modified covalently with cisplatin was studied by measuring the transformation efficiency of the plasmid in E. coli. Cisplatin-DNA complexes were prepared such that there was an average of two cisplatin adducts per plasmid as measured by ICP-MS. Aqueous solutions of the samples were irradiated with 137Cs [gamma]-rays at various doses. Gel electrophoresis analysis shows that cisplatin enhances, by a factor of 2.6, the formation of DSB by [gamma]-rays relative to those in unmodified DNA. Despite this increase, the yield of DSBs is very low and cannot explain the loss of functionality observed after transformation with plasmids modified with cisplatin. While locally multiple damaged sites (LMDS) revealed by repair enzymes Fpg (Formamidopyrimidine [fapy]-DNA glycosylase) and Nth (Endonuclease III) as DSB (nonDSB cluster damage), where their yield was increased by a factor of 2.1 when DNA was irradiated in the presence of cisplatin were able to explain the observed loss of DNA functionality. These results suggest that cisplatin may act not only as a chemotherapeutic agent, but also as an effective radiosensitizer by addition of other DNA lesions. For the first time, we could also evaluate the effect of low energy electrons (LEEs) on DNA functionality. Highly ordered DNA films were prepared on pyrolytic graphite by molecular self-assembly using 1,3-diaminopropane ions (Dap[superscript]2+) to bind together the plasmids and irradiated with LEE (10 eV). We concluded that in addition to CSBs, DSBs and base damage, LEEs induced the formation of non-DSB cluster damage and also induced the loss of DNA functionality under LEE irradiation. The yields of DSBs and of non-DSB cluster damage are too low and so one unable to explain the loss of DNA functionality. It seems that LEEs are able to induce a high complex damage that cannot be revealed by repair enzymes Fpg and Nth. The high complex damage is difficult to repair possibly because the repair of one lesion, may inhibit the repair of another.

Développement d'une méthodologie d'assistance au commissionnement des bâtiments à faible consommation d'énergie / Development of a methodology to assist the commissioning of low energy buildings

Hannachi-Belkadi, Nazila Kahina 08 July 2008 (has links)
The low energy buildings know, these latest years, a great interest because of the important role that they play in reducing the greenhouse gas emissions on one hand, and the rise of the combustibles prices, on the other hand. Nevertheless, in many cases, low energy consumption buildings do not achieve the expected performances. This problem is largely due to: 1) the loss of information throughout the building life cycle, 2) the non-regular evaluation of the decisions made by the actors intervening in their conception. The commissioning, as a quality control process, plays an important role in the good progress of the realization process of low energy buildings case. This research aims to develop a methodology to assist the persons responsible of the commissioning in the definition of commissioning plans adapted to their projects. Firstly, we performed a state of art of the low energy consumption buildings realisation that we then confronted, to the reality through an investigation with building actors and a study of real cases. This step allowed us to formulate a hypothesis concerning the necessity of a "progressive" commissioning -adapted to project particularities - and to describe a global methodology of assistance to the low energy consumption buildings realisation that integrates a decision making aid, an information management and a "progressive" commissioning that verify the good realisation of the two first functions. To put this methodology into application, a toolbox was developed. It comprises: 1) a tool named "static" that allows defining a first generic commission plan that satisfies the project characteristics, based on an exhaustive data of commissioning tasks, 2) a tool named "dynamic" based on the probabilities, that allows updating the initial (generic) commissioning plan. This update manages the unexpected events met during the project realization; witch permits the commissioning plan to be more precise. An experimentation of the first tool was done in a real case and applications of the second were done to show their possibilities and their limits. The results show two important points: 1) the interest of having a structured and progressive commissioning plan to verify the quality of low energy consumption buildings realisation and guarantee the achievement of the expected performances, 2) the interest of using a probabilistic tool such as the Bayésien networks to anticipate the drifts and to deal with the unexpected events met throughout the building life cycle. This methodology represents a basis for the development of assistance tools for the definition of commissioning "progressive" plans for the new and the existing, and all the building sectors

Grech, Sophie 12 December 2011 (has links)
This work of thesis was motivated by the will to measure the transmission of an electronic beam of low energy through a film. These measures were realized with the electron projection microscope, the use of which is based on three key elements: the tip, the object, the system of detection. The made measures allow, on the same object, to determine the transmission according to the kinetic energy of the incidental electrons for energies included between some tens and several hundreds of électronvolts. To bring to a successful conclusion these measures, we developed a procedure to fabricate freestanding ultra thin films. Their characterization by electronic microscopy showed that this procedure is reliable and that it allows to obtain freestanding films of some nanometers of thickness about side sizes of some tens of micrometers. We more particularly bent over golden nano porous films and over continuous nickel films. However, encouraging attempts (Co, Au/Co/Au, aluminum oxide, tétracontane) using this procedure indicate that this fabrication method can be spread. Transmission measurements realized on gold and nickel allowed to reach characteristics inherent to the material. Indeed, they constitute a new method of determination of the inner potential U and of inelastic mean free path Λ. We thus demonstrate through this work that the measure of the transmitted intensity of a coherent electrons beam by an ultra thin film can be realized in a local scale even on a unique cristallite. Furthermore, nano porous films constitute objects acting on the amplitude and the phase of the electronic wave. It is thus possible to modulate the wave electronic function by the control of the thickness and the porosity of the film.
