The aim of this study has been to examine what importance the Pink Gloves Boxing club has had for individual participant’s life situation with regards to psychosocial health, as a contribution to social work in Borlänge county. Furthermore, the aim has been to examine which parts of Pink Gloves Boxing have contributed to a possible change in the participants’ psychosocial life situation. Because of the aim to catch participants’ subjective experience of Pink Gloves Boxing, the material has been collected through semi-structured interviews with six participants. Through a thematic analysis of the material we found central themes and subthemes, which have formed the basis of the outcome. To analyze the result we have applied theories of empowerment and gender. All of the informants speak of better physique and increased mental health through their participation in Pink Gloves Boxing. Developed capacity of how to handle stress, aggression control and group affiliation are examples of the virtues of participation, as emphasized by informants. Positive components that emerged are the role of trainers, the cohesion of the group, the form of the exercise and the club’s arrangements, such as only female participants and group discussions.

Knowledge and attitudes of the Kinondoni community towards mental illnessChikomo, John Geofrey 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MCur)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mental health knowledge is defined as “the knowledge and beliefs about mental
disorders which aid their recognition, management or prevention”. Although
mental illness is a common condition in the community, only a few people with
these disorders generally undergo treatment with about only 70% of individuals
seeking help.
Contributing to the community’s lack of knowledge, it has also been found that
the public cannot recognise different types of psychological distress and mental
illness, resulting in people not seeking mental health care.
From the evidence perused in the literature, the researcher observed that
communities with sound mental health knowledge and a positive attitude
towards mental illness are motivated to seek professional help, whilst
communities with a lack of mental health knowledge and a negative attitude
towards mental illness are less motivated to seek professional help. The
researcher therefore aimed at determining the knowledge and attitudes of the
Kinondoni community members towards mental illness.
In determining the knowledge and attitudes of the Kinondoni community
members towards mental illness, the research design was a descriptive, crosssectional survey, with a quantitative approach. An adjusted, existing
questionnaire, with, self-compiled, closed ended questions, was used to collect
data. Reliability was supported by a pilot study to test the questionnaire
beforehand. Face and content validity focused on readability, clarity and
development of the questionnaire. The ethical principles were used to make
sure the rights of participants were protected.
The ethical approval was obtained from Stellenbosch University institutional
review board number IRB0005239 to conduct research. Furthermore the study
permit was given by the Kinondoni Municipal Medical Officer of health with
reference number TD/K/3/VOL/207. The collected data was analysed by using the Statistical Package for Social
Sciences (SPSS).
The results were presented in tables of means, in which each variable had its
own table of analysis of variance. The results were as follows; knowledge about
mental illness was very poor as most of the respondents in Kinondoni
community n=182 (61%) responded that mentally ill people cannot perform
regular jobs, had no friends, and were dangerous. Respondents n= 239 (79.6%)
had negative attitudes towards people with mental illness as they stated that
they have no right to find a job, have friends and be integrated into society.
The results conclude that the Kinondoni community members have less
knowledge and negative attitude towards mental illness.
The researcher summarises the completed process of this research study and
recommend policy makers to formulate guidelines to strengthen nursing
practice and education, to create awareness to the community on mental illness
and also recommend for further study.
Alhoewel geestesongesteldhede ‘n algemene
Ten slotte is riglyne beskryf. Die resultate is as volg; kennis betrefffende
gevaarlik is.

Severe mental illness and Self-stigma : ”You are afraid to ask for help when you need it. There is so much shame…”Altnäs, Sabina, Pärlsjö, Johanna January 2015 (has links)
Severe mental illness is a growing health problem. Severe mental illness and self-stigma in combination needs to be examined to clarify what impact they have in combination for each individual. The purpose of this study was to examine what kind of impact self-stigma has to individuals with severe mental illness. The study was conducted as a literature review and the results consisted of three categories: Becoming ones illness Feeling of shame and Feeling of hopelessness. Self-stigma affects the individuals negatively and makes it harder for them to recover. The combination of severe mental illness and self-stigma creates negative consequences from the stereotypical and jaundiced. Individuals have problems with finding meaning of life and are reluctant to seek treatment for their symptoms because of the feeling of shame and hopelessness. In return the symptoms of the mental illness increases and provides more suffering and decreases the meaning of life. It is important that nurses are aware of and are mindful to the individuals prejudice, feelings of shame and hopelessness about their mental illness. Nurses need to make sure that it is possible to be empowered as a patient. Interventions and nursing that aim to reduce the symptoms of self-stigma in severe mental illness should be adapted to the prejudice of the society. More scientific research is needed because of the limited number of present studies concerning self-stigma. There is a need to further investigate self-stigma in severe mental illness. Preferably studies with longitudinal design that focus on the phenomenon self-stigma and how it affects people with severe mental illness, to give a greater understanding.

Sjuksköterskans förhållningssätt till äldres psykiska ohälsa / Nurses’ approach to mental illness in the elderly.Falk, Karin, Larsson, Sofia January 2015 (has links)
Konklusion. / Rationale: Mental illness is often unidentified and untreated in elderly patients, resulting in unnecessary suffering and a significant reduction in quality of life. Nurses should through their holistic approach be in an excellent position to address this issue, however in reality this does not seem to happen. Aim: The aim of the study was to identify factors that affect nurses’ approach to mental illness in elderly patients. Method: The study was carried out as a literature review in accordance with Friberg (2012). Fourteen journal articles reflecting the aim of the study were identified and quality audited. Aspects of content analysis (Granheim& Lundman, 2004) were used to analyse the articles results. Results: Two general themes were identified in nurses’ approach to mental illness in elderly patients: internal and external factors. Internal factors included nurse attitudes to and knowledge about mental illness in elderly patients. External factors included elderly attitudes, the healthcare system’s biomedical approach and shortages inthe healthcare system. Conclusion.Nurses often have a lacking approach to mental illness in elderly patients, and this in turn often leads to negative consequences on the care they give. In some cases the lacking approach is due to factors outside of her control which can lead to dilemmas of an ethical nature. Watson’s transpersonal theory (1979) may be useful to help nurses gain a better approach to mental illness in the elderly. Implications: More research is needed in the area in order to improve care for this group of patients. There is need for improvement in nursing education and more aspects of mental health need to be incorporated in the undergraduate nursing curriculum.

Background: Mental illness is common among the Swedish population and is one of the endemic diseases. People with mental illness can be sticken with psychological or physical inconveniences and then turn to primary health care and will there meet nurses and other health care professionals. Aim: Was to illustrate health care professionals experience of encounter patients with mental illness in primary health care. Method: A literature review was carried out based on nine scientific qualitative articles. Result: Two main categories and four subcategories emerged. The first category ”To experience the meaning of communication to the encounter” consisted of the subcategories Verbal communication and Non-verbal communication. The communication, both verbal and non-verbal, meant a lot for the experience to encount the patients. The other main category: ”To experience limitations that affect the encounter” consisted of following subcategories: Limitations within the own profession and Limitations within the organization. Lack of knowledge within the staff or lack of resources within the organization affected the staffs’ ability to encount patients as desirable. Conclusion: Health care professionals have their own responsibility to utilize new research and information about the encounters with and the diseases of patients. The government should continue to request and encourage to develop the health care.
