Munkesjö, Maria January 2014 (has links)
Musikhögskolan i Stockholm. / Munkesjö, Maria: "Okey, I can sit and listen to music but I will not eat !" A qualitative study of music´s function for patients with eating disorders. A study carried out within the context of the Master Program in Music Education, profile Music Therapy at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. The purpose of this qualitative interview study was to investigate how patients in music therapy for eating disorders perceive and use music. This by examining the function of music attributed to the participants' lives and if it has been altered by Music Therapy. The paper presents a review of relevant literature and previous research in the fields of Music Therapy, Music and Health and Eating Disorders. Six female patients (median age 25 years) were interviewed after music therapeutic treatment (average 2.6 years). With a hermeneutical approach the transcribed interviews was analyzed using thematic qualitative analysis and artistic interpretation (music and image). The result presented in four main themes; The music's function as a companion through life; The music's function as ally with the dichotomy ; The music's function as tool for transformation and The music's function as associate with feelings. The results are discussed on the basis of objective and issues. This study shows, based on the theory of Health Musicking, that music is used and has a multitude of functions for the participants during childhood and adolescence. When the eating disorders develop the use of music are significantly modified and reflect the eating disorders. During the music therapy sessions the music take a more or less central role as a therapeutic tool. After music therapy the function of the music return to a multitude of functions. But now the participants are more aware of music as a health resource; Health Musicking, in their daily lives.

A musical people : the role of music in Biblical life / by Jonathan L. Friedmann

Friedmann, Jonathan Lawrence January 2011 (has links)
This thesis aims to uncover music’s important role in shaping and defining the selfidentity of ancient Israel. Functional music was integrated into Israel’s daily life, accompanying activities as diverse as manual labor and royal processionals. At key junctures and in core institutions, musical tones were used to formulate and deliver messages, convey and heighten emotions, assert and strengthen communal bonds, and establish and intensify human-divine contact. The intricate and multi-faceted nature of this music will be demonstrated through a detailed look into four main episodes and genres: the Song of the Sea (Exod. 15), King Saul and David’s harp (1 Sam. 16), the use of music in prophecy, and the Book of Psalms. Specifically, it will be argued that Israel’s birth as a free nation was marked by the Song of the Sea, its monarchic system was defined by the archetypical musician-king David, it depended on God’s word delivered through the often musical messages of prophecy, and its appointed institution for mediating worship was designed and officiated by a class of priestly musicians. Moreover, three of these four areas involve the main leadership categories of Old Testament society—king, prophet and priest—giving added support to the view that music held a prominent place and played a defining role within that civilization. The conception of music as a central element of biblical society will be developed using an interdisciplinary approach, wherein pertinent information from an array of specializations and sources is put into conversation and Old Testament passages are analyzed through a modern-scientific lens. Rather than relying on a single methodology, this study is rooted in the premise that by applying a variety of contemporary theoretical tools to selected Old Testament passages, essential functions of music in biblical life can be illuminated. Such an endeavour requires tools from a number of fields, including but not limited to theology, sociology, anthropology, musicology, cognitive science and music therapy, as well as the classification of musical references into four primary functions: cohesive, therapeutic, emotive/spiritual and didactic. The result is a thesis that identifies reasons for—and not just the existence of—music in biblical life, and, most centrally, shows significant ways music informed Israel’s understanding of itself. / Thesis (PhD (Old Testament))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Muzikos terapijos poveikis neišnešiotų naujagimių širdies susitraukimų dažniui, kraujo įsotinimui deguonimi, elgsenai ir tolimesnei raidai / Effect of music therapy on heart rate, oxygen saturation, behaviour and psychomotor development in preterm infants

Garunkštienė, Rasa 18 September 2012 (has links)
Tačiau jos poveikis raidai nėra iki galo aiškus, be to, naudojami įvairūs muzikos terapijos būdai. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Adaptation of a preterm infant in the early neonatal period plays a relevant role in his/her further life quality. Within this sensitive development period music therapy is used to reduce environmental stress. However, its effect on development is not explicit; moreover, music therapy methods vary. Music stimulation of very low birth weight infants should be adequate due to their physiological immaturity, thus, they should be exposed to music in the most efficient way. The work was performed to evaluate a short-term and long-term effect. It compared the effect of live and recorded lullabies on physiological factors and behaviour of preterm infants and evaluated the effect of music therapy on their recovery and further psychomotor development. Music therapy has been proved as efficiently influencing heart rate and behaviour of preterm infants (under 32 weeks’ postmenstrual age), i.e. their sleep was deeper. Live lullabies sooth preterm infants more efficiently that recorded ones. The effect of music therapy on blood saturation was insignificant. The group of long-term music therapy exposure revealed that preterm infants tend to be discharged from hospital with bigger weight gain, to compare with the control group. Significant effect on the psychomotor development in preterm infants was not established; however, music therapy was observed as strengthening parent-child relation and available for active application from neonatal period.

Haglöf, Felicia, Larsson, Caroline January 2013 (has links)

What can I understand about children with special needs from the musical offerings that emerge in the music therapy process? : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Music Therapy at New Zealand School of Music, Wellington, New Zealand

Cammell, Shane January 2008 (has links)
This arts-based research thesis sought to understand two children with special needs, through their musical offerings within the context of their music therapy sessions. The process of understanding the children came through firstly listening to and extracting meaningful musical data from recordings of their sessions. This data included both actual excerpts of the musical interplays between the child and music therapist (myself), and more broadly, underlying themes drawn from the recorded session material. The data was then creatively ‘melded’, resulting in two original instrumental works, herein referred to as 'songs'. Before, during and after writing the songs, rigorous analyses were undertaken utilising both a formal approach, via the use of a contextual question framework, and two creative approaches: free-form narration and data-led imagery. The contextual question framework, involving the repetitive use of two key questions - where? and why? - sought to understand the data’s context, its purpose for inclusion, and its influence on the respective song. One of the creative approaches, that of free-form narration, sought to, rather than analysing the song through formal structures, instead ‘tell the song’s story’, narratively conveying the experience of being with the child in his music. The other creative approach, that of data-led imagery, involved creating images during and after being ‘immersed’ in the musical data, employing instinctive or subconscious means to further develop the therapist’s understanding of the child’s musical offerings, and moreover, the child himself. Upon completion of the two songs, it was discovered that clinical themes present from the sessions strongly influenced the song creation process. Results also strongly supported the validity of arts-based research as a viable means of analysing music created with children with special needs.
