The Cardiology Brazilian Society believes that the valve disease represents a significant proportion of hospital admissions for cardiovascular disease. Patients who undergo invasive procedures, related to heart valve disease, require a multiprofessional monitoring. This is a qualitative and quantitative study that aims to investigate what the effects of Music Therapy on the levels of anxiety and stress of patients with heart prosthesis are. Patients older than eighteen, who had expressed their acceptance by the Term of Free and Informed Consent, which did not make use of psychotropic drugs and were not going through another non-pharmacological therapy, were included. The research was developed at the Serviço de Cardiologia do Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Goiás (Cardiology Service, Hospital das Clinicas, Federal University of Goiás). The following data collection instruments were used: music therapeutics form, scale for stress evaluation, trace-state anxiety inventory, session reports, audio and / or video. The music therapy process, in a humanistic perspective, was developed by music therapist / researcher, using specific techniques of Musicotherapy in the course of ten weeks. A group of three female patients, aged 29 to 44 attended all phases of the screening. It was evident that Musicotherapy helped reduce the stress and anxiety of the participating patients. The chosen songs and testimonies at the end of the consultations expressed internal contents and showed feelings such as; suffering, overcoming and resilience among the participants. Regarding quantitative data, there was an improvement, but without statistically significant differences. Musicotherapy may be among the non-drug treatment options for patients, who underwent implantation of metal / biological heart valve, to reduce stress and anxiety.

Logomúsica: a criação de um novo approach musicoterápico como veículo na promoção da saúde mental / Logomusic: the creation of a new music therapy approach as tool in the promotion of mental health

Juliana Leonardi 31 August 2011 (has links)
This research aimed to create a new music therapy approach inspired in logotherapy as a tool to promote mental health. Logomusic is a music therapy approach created by the researchers through the combination of logotherapy and music therapy, with existentialhumanistic and cultural foundation, in a context of intervention and research. A study group with 15 users from a Psychosocial Care Center was set, with interventions lasting for 10 months, through weekly 1-hour meetings. Field work had involvement of three participant-observers, trained for registering on the field diary and audiovisual recording, and a music therapist as co-therapist playing the piano, guitar and percussion. The following procedures were carried out: individual interviews with researchers, period of participant observation, implementation of music therapy cycles, joint construction of a poetic-musical play (based on protagonist roles), organization of an artistic-therapeutic show and a closing community circle for sharing with participants. The values of the research-subjects, from this process, revealed the importance of the role of freedom, responsibility, protagonist roles, music and creative processes in the promotion of mental health. The meanings shared and reported by the research-subjects in this research-action study were: a) talk circles about values as empowering experiences for health, responsibility and freedom; b) the group creative process (knowhow) as tools to learn new skills for dealing with practical issues on a daily basis; c) the access and sharing of the musical biography as an opportunity for existential rooting (identity and memory); d) the poetic-musical improvisation as a space for the exercise of knowing to be and knowing to live with; e) the joint creative process (construction of a poetic-musical play) as an accomplishment of the meaning of participants\' lives (custom-made projects and the sense of renewal of the community) and, f) logomusic, which was built on the pillars of the noetic, the protagonist role, of the dialogue and the collective musical creativity, revealing itself as a valuable tool in promoting mental health.

Netin Olofson, Barbro January 2013 (has links)
The thesis is an investigation of how the principals of five schools look at music used in special school. The study aims to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of music in school activities and for the pupils. In qualitative, semi- structured interviews, school leaders reflected on the use of music in their own schools. The material was then processed and analyzed with a hermeneutical approach. Special school pupils are a diverse group with both developmental disabilities and multiple physical disabilities. Often they have limited or no verbal skills and therefore difficulties to communicate with the environment. The study shows that music is used in several ways in the school in all subject areas, in group activities as well as individually. Most schools have a music teacher and/or music therapist employed. The study shows that music creates joy, strengthens self-confidence and raises self-esteem, provides coherence and community and fills, according to all the respondents, an overall important function - as an alternative means of communication.

Låtskrivaren : en intervjustudie om låtskrivarlärarens pedagogiska grundsyn

Wickman, Alexzandra January 2018 (has links)
This interview study has been conducted with the purpose of investigating how the songwriter and songwriting teacher experience their life-world and by it visualize the songwriter's pedagogical perspective. Qualitative research interviews have been made with four songwriters and teachers in the subject of songwriting to investigate the phenomenon. The informants are active in the upper secondary school as music teachers. The result and analysis is done with a hermeneutic and phenomenological approach from a life-world perspective. Interview studies have shown that the informants find that their writing helps them to be structured, focused and to complete and achieve results, as well as process impulses and feelings. All informants testify to how the writing has become a way for informants to process events in life, easy as complicated, as a kind of therapy. The passion for their writing has been strengthened and become one with the informants the longer time passed and the more time the informants have given the music. They claim that inspiration is something that comes from the "making" and that it can be evoked if you only get started, and that the desire to own your own artistry is an important component of the creation that drive the songwriter forward.

Musikens påverkan på individer med autismspektrumdiagnos : En litteraturöversikt / How individuals with autism spectrum disorder are affected by music : A literature review

Aftevik, Monika, Carlbark, Nina January 2017 (has links)
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) tend to have a limited capacity for social interactions, communications, and usually show hyper or hypo reactions to sensory stimuli. Time spent in health facilities can therefore be extra stressful. Since music is used for therapy or pain relief in cancer treatment and dementia care for example, it would be interesting to further explore the effects of music. The aim of this literature review was to investigate how individuals with ASD are affected by music. Eleven literature articles were analyzed and as a result, four themes emerged: physical, social, emotional influence and also focus and coping. Anxiety, mood, and social interactions were affected in a positive way by music or music therapy. Physical reactions in the brain were seen in regions underlying music perception and emotional processing. The nurse’s goal is person-centered care, and the knowledge of the effects of music and the possibility to use music in clinical practice, could make working with ASD patients easier. Future research on this subject could provide further knowledge and result in guidelines and routines for an easy use of music in the care of individuals with ASD.

Wallin, Marianne January 2013 (has links)
The study is a research project on how personnel appreciate music in the branch of care that provides activities for persons suffering from severe to mild intellectual deficiency. The study also attempts to find answers to what kind of observations the personnel have concerning the use of music as activity. The problem area of the study arises from the meeting point between on the one hand the practical, everyday application of music on persons with reduced intellectual capacity. On the other hand, the study will illustrate the adaptional possibilities of the theories of the topic area. The research results show that there is information which is completely based on tested experience among the group of individuals included in the research project, and further that there is an explicit need for supplementary theoretically based knowledge. The research results point to different perspectives concerning observations of the application of music. These results have later in the study been treated in the discussion part and shed light on by theories which are presented in the topic area. The method being used in the study is the qualitative research interview. The theoretical scientific perspective is taken from the hermeneutics.

Högberg Eriksson, Rebecca, Linde, Amanda January 2018 (has links)
The number of people with dementia increases in the world, is a progressive disease and gives a fatal outcome. The most important measure is to provide good care. The nurse's role includes the overall responsibility for the care and the implementation of new methods. Studies have shown that alternative care can be a good complement to ordinary care for this group of patients. In previous studies music has shown positive results in promoting health in humans.

[en] MUSIC - A BRIDGE OVER TIME: DEMENTIA AND MUSICAL MEMORY / [pt] MÚSICA - UMA PONTE NO TEMPO: DEMÊNCIA E MEMÓRIA MUSICAL

MARIANGELA APARECIDA REZENDE ALEIXO 07 July 2004 (has links)
[en] The present dissertation aims at examining the dementia impact on the musical memory through the theorical references of neuroscience and social sciences. Although some studies indicate that the musical ability is one of the latest capacities to be lost in dementia, there are few researches about this theme. The investigation of relations of musical functions and its cerebral funcional organization togheter with the aspects of emotion and social cultural context where the subject is inserted led to an attempt to understanding the musical memory. Music therapy became the possible therapeutic setting a course where a musical self - individual or group - can be reconstructed in a present time through the different musical sonorities.

Group music therapy utilising marimba playing for children with low self-esteem

Best, Helene January 2014 (has links)
Qualitative research was conducted to explore if, and how, music therapy utilising group marimba playing can facilitate increased self-esteem for children in a small independent school in the Western Cape. The case study involved ten weekly group music therapy sessions as well as a performance session. African marimbas were used in conjunction with other methods of active music making in the group sessions. Excerpts of video recordings were analysed and the Behavioural Indicators of Self-esteem (BIOS) rating scale was completed for each child pre- and post-intervention in order to examine whether music therapy sessions facilitated changes in children’s self-esteem that transferred to the classroom situation. The findings from the qualitative analysis of video excerpts indicate that group music therapy intervention utilising marimba playing appeared to facilitate the development of self-esteem. Experiences were provided to increase the participants’ sense of worthiness and competence. Results of the BIOS scale could not be statistically analysed due to the small sample size, but the data suggests that the music therapy intervention had an impact that carried over to the classroom situation on participants who were assessed to have lower self-esteem before the intervention (compared to others in the sample) as observed in their classroom behaviour. / Dissertation (MMus)--University of Pretoria, 2015. / Music / MMus / Unrestricted

Collaborations between music therapist and parents to transfer music therapy activities into the home context for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Tracey, Kerryn A. January 2017 (has links)
This qualitative research study explored areas of similarity and contrast between a music therapy student's interpretations of selected audiovisual excerpts from music therapy sessions with a child with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and his parent's interpretations of the same. A further feature of the study was investigating how these interpretations could inform the collaborative creation of a music activity for use in the home environment. Eight one-on-one music therapy sessions were conducted with an eight year-old boy with ASD at Alpha School in the Western Cape. The sessions were video recorded. Once the music therapy process was complete, four primary excerpts and five secondary excerpts were selected. Interpretations of the four primary excerpts were written by the music therapy student. A semi-structured interview consisting of two parts was then conducted with the child's parent. Part one involved eliciting the parent's interpretations of the four primary excerpts. Part two involved the viewing of the five secondary excerpts as part of a discussion between the music therapy student and parent, leading to the collaborative creation of a music activity for the home environment. The interpretations of the music therapy student and parent were matched with the music therapy student's interpretations for the purposes of qualitative content analysis and comparative analysis. Codes were derived for the interpretations, and then grouped into sub-categories and categories. Two overarching themes were then drawn from the data: operation of the music therapy student's contextual lens; and operation of the parent's lens. Within these two themes, different sub-themes were present: music therapy student’s reflexivity; focus on developing relationship; focus on clinical musical features; valuing offerings as musical; parent's pride in her child; noticing musical interactions; and focusing on successful interactions. These themes then implicitly informed the collaborative creation of a music activity for the home context. / Dissertation (MMus)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Music / MMus / Unrestricted
