Locating identity and ethnicity in Cornish civil society : Penzance, a case study

Harris, Richard John Pascoe January 2016 (has links)
Recently there has been considerable interest in Cornish ethnicity reflected both by a rise in the numbers in Cornwall who identify as Cornish and by academic research. Cornish studies have constructed a regional narrative embracing Celticity and an economy based on primary industries, particularly mining, from which has evolved a distinctive culture. This study adopting an ethnographic approach, extends Cornish studies by considering a number of elements which have not previously been addressed. These include investigating how identity may be played out in a particular place to see whether there may be differences in how ethnicity is performed within Cornwall, looking at how it may be practiced collectively in the context of civil society and examining the relationship between ethnicity and place identity. Three settings within Penzance have been selected to represent some of the issues prevalent in twenty first century Cornwall. They include a study of festivals celebrating ethnicity and place identity, an investigation of how kinship and ethnicity are the basis for social cohesion on a social housing estate and an analysis of a dispute over harbour re-development reflecting tensions between regeneration and conservation. Investigating the civil society associated with each of these settings has identified a number of discourses which influence place images, are the focus for debate and reflect different ways in which ethnicity is articulated and performed. Influences on Cornish identity have been exposed which have not been previously explored by Cornish Studies including the relationship between civil society and the state, the importance of place mythology and the impact of inward migration. The study concludes that collective identities, ethnicity and place images are constantly in flux driven by discourses debated within the micro-politics of civil society and that the overarching narratives of Cornishness contain tensions and cleavages which help explain the fractured nature of much of public life in Cornwall.

Ships representation in North-West Europe between the VIIIth and the XIIId century

Auger, Barbara 07 October 2011 (has links)
Studying the representation of ships in Nord-West Europe is not limited to the sole iconographic question, but aims to understand the human in its act of representation. To do so, this thesis asks the question of the human perception and its cultural result. In this perspective, a particular interest has been given to the words used by the populations to name the ship as a technological object, to the boat-shaped productions and images, and to the mental patterns behind each type of representation. In a nutshell, the thesis aims to give an anthropological definition of these particular images, by studying the production contexte and the author's intentionality. Image of a creative process, the mythological ship asks the questions of a fondamental human behavior, which implies a deeper epistemological analysis. Questioning the image of a ship is questioning the creative movement. This thesis is a boat.

Santos, Poliane Vasconi dos. January 2003 (has links)
Abstract: Osiris was one of the most important divinities inside the panteon of Egyptian civilization. We find hints of this myth since the beginning of the Dynastyc era until the Greco-Roman period, in which we have the syntesis made by Plutarch (45-120 A.D.) in his work about Isis and Osiris. Analyzing the myth of Osiris, as it is narrated by Plutarch, we can realize that its influence was very deep and very important in the history of Egypt, reaching questions concerning the main features of this society. The myth of Osiris answered questions and wishes which were pertinent to all egyptians, so that it was adored in entire country. It possessed characteristics and functions as god related to the cycles of nature, like the Moon, the Nile River and the seed; as keeper of order and of regal succession and, fundamentally, as the one which transcended the death and went to reign in Over-Grave, becoming king and judge of that world. Thus, our purpose will be to show that the myth of Osiris was related to all features of Egyptian life, from peace to war, from dryness to inundation, from plague to plenty, from the divine position of the king to the hardness of servitude, and fundamentally, from life to death. So, the myth of Osiris got to embrace, in its divine personality, all the necessary attributes to resolve and to satisfy the needs of all social classes, from the king to the serf. / Mestre

Tokita, Juliana Figueiredo. January 2012 (has links)
Para tanto, utilizamos a tradução de Thomas Kinsella, presente na obra The Táin (1969), The Exile of the Sons of Uisliu. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The work of deliverance from the ancient Irish literary tradition is a continuous process of re-signification and maintenance of all the collection of stories that represent the country's own identity. The mythical characters are present in the people's memories and are a source of inspiration for new readings and new adaptations. The work of mythological rereading became intense mainly during the Celtic Revival Movement, having as leading role the playwright William Butler Yeats. Inspired by the nationalist spirit from this period, John Millington Synge produced several plays regarding the celtic life and history, among them is Deirdre of the Sorrows (1910). Almost a century after Vincent Woods wrote A Cry from Heaven (2005), a play that is also shaped having the myth The Exile of the Sons of Uisliu, widely known as the myth of Deirdre, as source. This dissertation aimed to analyze one specificity regarding the Irish mythology, in other words, the fact that this traditions presents us with a wide amount of important female characters. The myth of Deirdre, that originally has the name of its warriors, and sons of Uisliu, has as the main character a woman, Deirdre. This feature was maintained and revised in a special manner by Synge and Woods. Thus, our goal was to research aspects of the female characterization present in each play, in a comparative manner with the same ones present in the myth. For such, Thomas Kinsella's translation, present in The Táin (1969), The Exile of the Sons of Uisliu was used. The female actions and speeches were examined, especially in dialogues with the male figure. Therefore, we worked with the hypothesis that the female characters in Vincent Woods's and Synge's plays could (or couldn't) have been characterized as independent and powerful women, if compared with their traditional...

Thomaz Pereira de Amorim Neto 22 March 2007 (has links)
The comic books are a narrative genre which in the last years have reached a wide repercussion. At first, this work approaches the comics language problem from its hybrid articulation between text and image. Later, we present some elements that may constitute the comics aesthetics. We also discuss the mythological structures immanent from the super hero genre, this discussion is undertaken in order to develop archetypical history of comic books. The archetypical issue is approached in a broad way, while relating with philosophical, properly narrative and historical concepts, as well as relating with the comic book as an object of art. At last, we venture the analysis of a particular case, demonstrating how an archetype is worked in this narrative genre

Pensamento e antítese : a gnose de Hans Jonas

Bonatto, Michele January 2014 (has links)
Hans Jonas (1903-1993) was a German-Jew philosopher who developed an existentialist view to the gnostic phenomena under the scope and orientation of Martin Heidegger, which is a dualistic religion which boundaries had preceded and influenced the Early Christians. Such understanding has yet today played an important role on the historical reconstruction of Gnosticism, even though it has gathered heavy criticism from current scholars such as Michael Williams (1996) and Karen King (2001). In this dissertation is verified that Jonas‘analysis over Gnosticism is trespassed by non-ethical concepts in the basis to the development of the Gnostic construct. So they are: East and West; Myth and Mysticism; Mythology and Philosophy, Faith and Knowledge, Gnostic Principle and Responsibility Principle. Such non-ethical concepts are restrictive itselves since they are asymmetrical, namely, the counterpart they are supposed to define is diminished by them (KOSELLECK, 2006). Although Hans Jonas had turned to face the problem of the self as an ontological one, after World War II, it was the Gnostic Principle the linking point to the construction of his other Principle on his later days: the Responsibility Principle. So that, in accordance to Wadelstein (2000), it was due to the plain hostility towards Jonas’ construct on Gnostic Principle that prevented his understanding over gnosticism from advancing further, despite the possible conection of his ideas with the new-found Nag Hammadi papers.

Santos Granero, Fernando 25 September 2017 (has links)
The article analyzes the phenomenon of child sorcery, that is, of children accused of being sorcerers, among the Arawakan peoples of eastern Peru. It is suggested that this practice was the result, in colonial times, of the mimetic appropriation and structural transformation of the Christian legend of St Christopher and the Christ Child into the myth of a cannibalistic giant and his evil infant son. The notion that children could become potent witches would have been reinforced in postcolonial times by epidemics affecting mostly adults. If this is so, the belief in child sorcery would be one of those unforeseen and tragic products of the colonial encounter. In their eagerness to exorcise colonial violence Peruvian Arawaks turned against themselves, unleashing violence against their children’s bodies and through them to the body politic at large. This practice, thought to have been abandoned in the 1970s, has reappeared with renewed force in recent times as a result of the violence and social disruption resulting from confrontations with insurgent groups and the Peruvian Army.
