Managing the diversity of parental involvement in primary schools / Andre Smith

Smith, Andre January 2012 (has links)
The word diversity can be described as being different or having differences. Furthermore, it also relates to variety or assortment. Diversity forms an integral part of society worldwide. It consists of many different aspects which are all evident in different ways in society. These aspects of diversity include culture, religion, race, language, socio-economic class, gender, ability, etc. Diversity also exists in education as an important part of society. Parental involvement is viewed by many people as an important part of the education process. It has many positives which include improved academic performance of the child, understanding of the schools circumstances, having a more positive attitude towards the school, improved community involvement and a positive school climate. Parental involvement enhances the complete learning experience of the child and focuses on the total development of the child. It includes the making of a commitment and the forming of a partnership between parent and school which is also fundamentally prescribed by legislation. When this partnership is engaged in properly there is a definite positive outcome for both the child and the school. Fundamentally, the purpose of parental involvement lies in the opportunities that it offers all the stakeholders involved to contribute towards the upbringing and development of the children. Managing the involvement of parents should be well planned and directed. School managers need to take into account the issue of diversity in relation to parental involvement. Schools have to make use of creative strategies and approaches as they deal with differences among people which need to be respected in such a way that everyone can be integrated into the school system. Diversity amongst people has an influence on parental involvement and need to be managed to good effect. Ultimately, positive parents will educate positive children who are what we strived for. What is interesting from the results of the study is that the respondents that participated in the research are of the opinion that racial differences as an aspect of diversity doesn‟t have a significant influence on parental involvement. Strategic Equity Management in the Australian Private Sector

French, Erica January 2003 (has links)
Developing equitable practices that provide fair access for all individuals to the benefits and burdens within an organisation remains a dilemma for management both in policy and practice. Research continues to show that the employment status and representation of women is significantly less in relation to those of men. Conflicting arguments on the causes of disparity and competing ideals on the value and means for addressing the disparity have resulted in a number of different opinions on the implementation and practice of equity management. This dissertation contributes to the current knowledge of equity management, exploring contemporary equity management strategies, identifying the approaches of its implementation and analysing these against the outcomes for the status of women's employment. The equity management practices of more that 1900 Australian Private Sector organisations are explored in order to identify the common themes of equity management. Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factory Analysis are used to analyse the data. A model of strategic equity management practice was developed that identifies different structures, strategies and distribution principles designed to address the disparity between men and women. A major aim of this thesis was to explore the ability of a typological theory of equity management approaches to account for the differences in the status of women's employment. The thesis proposes a typology of equity management approaches that explain the implementation of equity management strategies based on structure and process. Four ideal-typical equity management approaches to achieving workplace parity are identified and explored. The traditional (non-compliance), anti-discrimination, affirmative action and gender diversity approaches proposed inform the a priori Cluster Analysis process that grouped Australian organisations based on their use of the approaches to equity management. Significant numbers of Australian organisations were identified utilising each of the identified approaches to equity management. It was further proposed that the different equity management approaches would be predictors of different outcomes for the employment status of women. MANCOVA was used to analyse the equity management approaches (as the independent variables) and the data on the status of women's employment (as the dependent variables). The findings indicate that the different approaches to equity management are predictors of different outcomes for the employment status of women. Results show that the traditional approach to equity management, which includes the use of none of the equity management strategies identified, is not a predictor of increases in any of the employment measures of women. The anti-discrimination approach, which includes the use of a limited number of equity management strategies identified, is a predictor of increases in some of the employment measures of women. The affirmative action approach to equity management, which includes the use of a number of proactive equity management strategies identified, is a predictor of increases in the employment status of women across a number of measures. The gender diversity approach to equity management, which includes the use of all the equity management strategies identified, is a limited predictor of increases in the employment status of women across some of the measures of employment. Managing the equity process within organisations is increasingly identified as an important tool in managing human resources in competitive, global environments that require productive workers and quality outputs. If equity management is to provide an effective means of addressing disparity between men and women in organisations, this thesis argues for the development of a strategic process to address the specific issues of disparity and the particular needs of the individual and the explicit goals of the organisation in equal opportunity.

Diversity management in a subsidiary of a multinational corporation / Manažment diverzity v pobočke nadnárodnej spoločnosti

Fischerová, Adela January 2013 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis was to analyze the diversity management in a chosen company from the management's perspective. Also the main goals, values and activities of this system were analyzed. The chosen company is an IT global company that has subsidiaries all around the globe; these subsidiaries each have their own small, local adaptation of diversity management. After the diversity management was analyzed from the company's perspective, the other objective was to analyze the perception of its employees. These two outputs were compared to each other afterwards and key findings were discussed. Quantitative methods, which were partially supported by own experience in the company, as well as informal interviews with its employees, were used for the research. A quantitative research with 93 respondents proved that the diversity strategy in the company is developed, however still some room for improvement has. In the end of the thesis recommendations, based on a SWOT analysis were carried out.

Gender Mainstreaming. Eine Untersuchung zur Geschlechtergerechtigkeit in der Polizei Niedersachsen

Kloweit-Herrmann, Manfred 24 June 2004 (has links)

Wu, Po Yi Unknown Date (has links)

Mångfaldsplanens påverkan på rekrytering : En kvalitativ studie om chefer inom bank- och finansbranschen / Diversity policies impact on recruitment : A qualitative study of managers in the banking and finance industry

Espling, Kim, Hagström, Oscar January 2017 (has links)
Background: Immigration to Sweden has increased in recent years requiring organizations to utilize the newly arrived population. The Swedish Parliament wishes to promote diversity in Swedish workplaces and has laid down a law stating that organizations must actively work on diversity. Due to the absence of a directive, the recruitment procedure has been characterized by managers tending to recruit individuals similar to themselves, which has resulted in homogeneous group configurations. This phenomenon is called homosocial reproduction. The importance of a diversity policy is therefore essential for diversity to be continuous throughout the organization. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to describe and analyze the manager's perception of how recruitment is based on the organization's diversity policy. Method: Since the purpose of the study is to describe and analyze individual experiences, a qualitative survey method has been used. Seven individual semi- structured interviews have been conducted in relation to our theoretical reference framework. Conclusion: The results of the study emphasize the manager's lack of commitment to reading the diversity policy. Furthermore, the present study has shown that managers perceive that the diversity policy cannot be applied at local offices, resulting in HR failing to disseminate the information. The study has also shown that the diversity policy did not affect the manager's recruitment process. The present study has shown that managers recruit according to personal preferences and have diversified group compositions in the form of varying gender, age, work experience and academic background. The present study has shown that ethnicity is not involved in the manager's definition of diversity, which may indicate ethnic subordination.

The views of management on affirmative action in Telkom SA Ltd / Menings van bestuut aangaande regstellende optrede in Telkom SA Bpk

De Witt, Delano Errol 06 1900 (has links)
The success or failure of implementing affirmative action lies with the management of enterprises. This research - based on a literature study, questionnaires completed by 200 respondents and the researcher's model for the implementation of affirmative action - focuses on management's views on aspects of importance for affirmative action to succeed in the enterprise. From the views of management it is clear that • the more closely affirmative action impinges on the career expectations of the current incumbents, the more resistance and non ownership can be expected • the affirmative action message must be communicated sincerely and positively • diversity management must change drastically to focus on educating persons to understand not only themselves, but also others of different backgrounds, race, gender, skills, persuasion and experience • the enterprise needs to accelerate the process to identify potential, training and development processes as well as performance coaching of disadvantaged groups Meeting the above challenges, will require mutual trust, respect and communication.
