Complicating articulation in narrative film : tracing the relationship between inarticulate form and character

Morrison, Benedict January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores the relationship between film form and character expression, both of which are seen as articulated structures, that is utterances in which separable parts operate cooperatively to create meaning. The specific films examined present characters who struggle to express themselves. These inexpressive characters are combined in each case with a disrupted form which displays its own many-jointed structure. The thesis argues that the dynamic relationship between inarticulacies of character, narrative, and form generates an indeterminate dialectic. The unresolved relationship between parts and whole (reminiscent of a complex mosaic structure) complicates the process of reading for univocal meaning. The operation of this dual inarticulacy is discussed in Chapter One. Each subsequent chapter is devoted to a single film and a particular example of formal disjuncture: contrapuntal narrative levels, clashing styles, discontinuous editing, bricolage, the dislocation of genre signifiers from conventional meanings, and intermedia. The films discussed at length in connection with these theories are: 'Journal d'un curé de campagne' (1951); 'Germania anno zero' (1948); 'Belle de Jour' (1967); 'Distant Voices, Still Lives' (1988) and 'The Long Day Closes' (1992); 'Meek's Cutoff' (2010); 'The Pillow Book' (1996).

Contemporary theology and the meaning of life

Barrett, J. Edward January 1964 (has links)
In the research which follows an examination is undertaken of selected writings from six leading contemporary theologians to discover what help they give in answering the question of the meaning of life. The six theologians have been chosen (1) because of the varied positions which they represent, and (2) because of their obvious influence within the present-day church. No suggestion is intended that Karl Barth, Rudolf Bultmann, Karl Heim, Reinhold Niebuhr, Henry Wieman, and Paul Tillich exhaust the term “contemporary theology.” Rather conspicuously absent are considerations of Emil Brunner, G.C. Berkouwer, Nels Ferre, the “Lundensian” school (Gustav Aulen and Anders Nygren), and the newly developing “post-Bultmann” school (particularly Fritz Buri and Gerhard Ebeling). The six men chosen do, however, give some index of the broad and varied spectrum which is “contemporary theology.” The purpose of the following research is: (1) to establish a more precise definition of the question of the meaning of life; (2) to survey the answers to the question as developed within the thoughts of six leading contemporary theologians; and (3) to suggest, by observing strengths and weaknesses, the kind of answer which, in the light of the more precisely defined question, is most truly a helpful answer.

W. Bridgman (1881-1965). As conseqüências disso e o caráter operacional da matemática serão detalhadamente abordados no trabalho / Abstract: This paper aims to present and analyze the basis of the operational conception of the meaning proposed by P. W. Bridgman (1881-1965). I begin with the operationalism in Physics, where it was first proposed, as a solution attempt to problems in the foundations. I deal with the question of the consistency with the experience of concepts, affirmations and theories of Physics. Then, I analyze the operationalism in Logic, in the Logic apply in physical contexts and in mathematical contexts. I consider the principle of the excluded middle and the role of the checking of the affirmations and the truths in relation with it. This analysis will render it explicit the proximity of operationalism with Brouwer's intuitionism in the philosophy of the mathematics. The consequences of operationalistic theses for mathematics and the alleged operational character of mathematics will be discussed in details in this paper / Doutorado / Filosofia / Doutor em Filosofia

Derivation and application of a model of lens meaning

Emme, Michael John January 1991 (has links)
The twofold purpose of this study was to ground a model of Lens Meaning in the literature of the Fine Arts and Social Sciences and to use that term as a referent in evaluating three Media Studies curricula. Lens Meaning is a term derived from a variety of sources, particularly Peirce (1955), whose semiotic theory described three systems of signs used as terms on one axis of a matrix or model by which Lens Meaning can be described. These terms are: "index", "icon", and "symbol". DeLauretis' (1984) expanded understanding of another system of signs described by Peirce, interpretants, is the foundation for the three terms on the other axis of the matrix. Those terms, which describe interpretation or response, are: "emotional", "energetic", and "habit changing". These, and other terms identified in the literature, provided a conceptual model that might be applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs of Media Studies, and similar documents. Three Media Studies programs were selected for study: from Western Australia, Ontario, and Scotland. Application of the model permitted conclusions to be drawn on the extent to which current issues of an ideological and sociopolitical nature were addressed by these programs. It was concluded that the model achieved the purposes required of it and that it may be of further utility for educators. / Education, Faculty of / Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department of / Graduate

In search of meaning : preaching within the context of a "Post-Apartheid" South African society

Davis, Sharon 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MTh (Practical Theology and Missiology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / The search for meaning, as a universal human quest, seeks to answer questions pertaining to the purpose in life. Preaching, as an ecclesiastical communicative tool, should be a platform from which to address such universal concerns. But how relevant are contemporary pulpit messages in light of this ongoing search and in light of the suffering experienced by many in our South African context with its unique history and ongoing challenges? Revisiting concepts such as meaning, hope and community are foundational components in our contemporary deliberations of the intention and practice of preaching today. If the homiletical intention is to instill hope, establish community and address humanities questions related to embracing the abundance in abundant life, then the praxis thereof should demonstrate a commitment to the relevance of people’s struggles. In the context of a post-apartheid South Africa, these questions are more pronounced as people experience the ongoing effects of poverty, prejudice, injustice and are confronted with the HIV/AIDS pandemic. For preaching to remain relevant it would need to extend its boundaries from the pulpit to the community. It will need to understand the plight of its people by addressing the questions that communities are asking, rather than providing messages far removed from humanities current experiences. In order to maintain this balance of hope, it will require an evaluation of the emphasis placed on representing both the social and spiritual aspects of the gospel. Social, with its focus on following the example of Christ on earth, and Spiritual, with its emphasis on both a realized and eschatological hope. Embracing this holistic message of the gospel should inherently contribute to personal and communal transformation as it is a message of good news for physical, emotional, socio-economic, psychological and spiritual realities. The language employed in this ongoing commitment requires constant renewal in order to synchronize the needs of the people with the message of hope. A message that is needed, longed for and inherently meaningful.

ASTRACT Meaning and sense establish an intimate connection, often difficult to separate. In an educational world in which the mediation is an extremely complex concept, as well as being studied and applied, this include the dynamics of planning. Faced with this problem, as the understanding of teachers towards this concept? What are the meanings that they attach to the mediation? Through the ethnographic approach, this study investigates how two teachers of the Covenant Program for Education comprise pedagogical mediation. For this, the notes from participant observation and interviews were mobilizers instruments used for the collection and analysis of data, enabling the creation of categories and subcategories. The paths named in this work, reflected by analysis of the data shows a wider dimension between meanings of the theoretical frameworks in the training of teachers, before and after the Program for Teacher Education (Pact) to which they were linked. The mediational strategies presented by both unfold in procedures and attitudes that mark mediational senses which sometimes distoam of concepts that use. Thus, recognition of the senses and meanings brought in speeches and remarks reveal the conceptual, procedural and attitudinal fields as representations of the discourse and practice of this collaborative study. Between theory and practice; between feeling and meaning, rather than answers, this paper points and reflections from these reflective analysis, ways. These, in turn, bring possibilities between knowing and being, balls deserve to be cared for in the educational setting, especially in policies thatpropose training for those who work directly or indirectly with teaching / learning.

Paradigmas de analise conceitual em Wittgenstein / Paradigms of conceptual analysis in Wittgenstein

Azize, Rafael Lopes 12 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Arley Ramos Moreno / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-12T10:40:44Z (GMT). / Abstract: This work investigates the philosophical activity of conceptual analysis as conceived by the latter Wittgenstein, from the point of view of the way in which it contributes to exhibit the casuistic limits of sense after the Tractatus. Conceptual analysis is thus considered particularly from the point of view of its scope, of its terminus. Three moments are pinpointed, corresponding to the three chapters: 1. the moment when rules are introduced as objects of analysis, in the context of the corresponding systems of rules; 2. the moment of pluralization of the systems of rules, i.e., when the field of a rule's clarification extrapolates to chained systems, and the concept of language game is introduced to account for the mode of such continuity; and finally, 3. the moment in which conceptual analysis finds its outer boundaries in the very broad and vague context (die Umgebung) of the form of life. Parallel to this, more specific aspects are outlined, relative to the differences between the three paradigms of analysis: 1. the different procedures of analysis, or clarification, required by each paradigm; 2. what counts as a concept in each paradigm; and finally, 3. a wider movement, which is revealed in a retrospective consideration of the three paradigms, of broadening of the analytical scope, toward the pragmatic environment / Doutorado / Doutor em Filosofia

This research is a reflection on the presence, mainly in the last 40 years, of Discourse Analysis in Brazil. It aims to comprehend, on the perspective of the Linguistic Ideas History in articulation with Pecheut¿s Discourse Analysis theorical-methodological dispositives, in the formulation of the statements formulation in the interviews performed with researches that study such theory, interpretation gestures that historicize its presence and determine different directions in the historic process of coming through, development and constitution of Discourse Analysis area in the country, forming, this way, different theorical-methodological places for the theory. The researchers scrap to be interviewed was performed in graduation courses of Languages, Linguistics, Social Sciences, Political Sciences, History, Psychoanalysis, Psychology and Social Communication, whose mastering/doctoring were recommended by Capes. In the beginning of 2011, it was found 317 courses in this condition. From then on, Lattes curriculum of the professors in the courses started to be researched in order to find the term Discourse Analysis, in the presentation text, as well as in the research lines or projects, yet in the topics taught. More than 900 professors¿ curriculum were checked and it was approached a number of 369 researchers, to whom it was sent a questionnaire through email. The first readings were performed through 104 interviews received and, the final analysis, with 44 of them, whose statements constitute the corpus of this research. At the end of this research it was possible to comprehend that Discourse Analysis configures itself in the relations that it establishes among interfaces, theorical flows and its founding basis. Its plural constitution is formed in a constant construction and reconstruction movement of its territory, in a tension space in which theory is comprehended sometimes as an opened space of knowledge, sometimes as bordered one. And, in this movement, it identification is meant, in a lot of sayings, by the counter position to the Other; that is, by which it is not in relation to the Other. The meaning of identification through denying, in the statements analyzed, marks, among others the confront way of a facing surrounding the main question among Discourse Analysis and other linguistic theories, that is, language comprehension. Yet, it was considered that the route of Discourse Analysis in Brazil was performed in different temporalities, no matter if around distinct theorical inscriptions of researchers or in those temporalities in which Discourse Analysis was placed as breaking point in linguistic studies, a rupture or news in some order; as well as in temporalities in which subject-researchers were configuring themselves in different theorical positions inside Discourse Analysis. In this research, it was not a case of going through archives memory but to the interdiscourse and the research took care of fragments, derive senses, most of times contradicting and that come back or go further depending on the different subject position which are taken in the statements of the interviewed ones / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutora em Linguística
