A multimodal investigation of distress intolerance and youth anxiety disorders

Elkins, Regina Meredith 04 December 2016 (has links)
Despite major advances in the development of evidence-based practices (EBPs) for child anxiety, there remains a critical need to improve upon current treatments. Identifying common, transdiagnostic processes underlying child anxiety disorders offers a promising avenue to refine conceptualizations of the etiology and maintenance of child anxiety disorders, to enhance the efficacy of interventions, and to facilitate the dissemination of EBPs. Distress intolerance (DI), defined as the perceived inability to tolerate negative somatic and emotional states or experiential discomfort (Simons & Gaher, 2005), is a transdiagnostic factor contributing to multiple forms of mental illness. Emerging research suggests that DI may be associated with elevated anxiety in community samples of youth; however, associations between DI and child anxiety have yet to be evaluated in a clinical population. The present multimodal investigation (N = 56) examined patterns and correlates of DI in a treatment-seeking sample of anxious youth (ANX, n = 28) relative to community controls (COM, n = 28). The aims of the study were to examine differences in DI between ANX and COM youth on self-report and behavioral measures of DI, and to determine the extent to which DI mediates links between child anxiety and associated behavioral avoidance. Youth ages 10-17 completed self-report measures assessing child anxiety symptoms, behavioral avoidance, and DI. Next, participants completed a behavioral task intended to provoke mild levels of distress that assessed behavioral persistence in the face of that distress. Consistent with hypotheses, ANX participants demonstrated higher levels of self-reported DI than COM participants, and greater anxiety-disorder severity was associated with higher levels of self-reported DI. Contrary to hypotheses, there were no between-group differences in behaviorally assessed DI. Mediation analyses revealed that a composite summary score of three self-report DI measures significantly mediated the link between anxiety status and behavioral avoidance. These findings provide compelling preliminary support that self-perceived DI may underlie the behavioral avoidance that is a cardinal feature across anxiety disorders. Results can inform the optimization of EBPs for child anxiety such that clinicians might directly target DI within treatment to better alleviate symptoms and yield more enduring treatment gains in anxiety-disordered youth.

Abstract: The thesis presents a proposal for reading mediator formation, who directly acts at school libraries. The methodology used was the action research approach, which is divided into two periods. During the first period (2002/2003), the research was based on the "Bibliotecas Escolares: Palavras Andantes" (School Libraries: Walking Words) project, which is an initiative of the public educational system of the Londrina Municipality in Brazil. The second period (2005/2006) was located in Barcelona, Spain. The study has collected data regarding mediation activities in two Spaniard library schools, in order to establish a correlation of this process between Barcelona and Londrina. During the research, project participants and specialists in the field were interviewed in Brazil an Spain. The names are: Edmir Perrotti; Regina Zilberman; Teresa Colomer; and Teresa Mañà. The work conclusion presents that the reading mediator requires a bond among three aspects: the reading practice itself, the literature concept, and the relation betweem the initial two aspects with the reading experience in the school library. / Doutor

Emotionsreglering som mediator i utvecklandet av emotionell ohälsa över tid hos adolescenter / Emotion regulation as a mediator of emotional distress development over time in adolescents

Ekeroth, Julia, Jehrlander, Malin January 2014 (has links)
Depressive and anxiety symptoms, which can be classified as types of emotional distress, anre common and growing issues among Swedish youth. Substantial comorbidity and gender differences concerning emotional distress have been observed. The relationship between emotion regulation and emotional distress have obtained convincing empirical support during the last couple of decades. This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the mediating role of emotion regulation in the development of emotional distress over time. The question of gender as a moderator of the relationship was also addressed. Analysis indicate that two emotion regulation strategies, cognitive emotion regulation and behavioral avoidance, do mediate the relationship. Gender differences were found in the cognitive strategy. The results of the study indicate that emotion regulation could be a part of the explanation for the increase of adolescent emotional distress over time. This relationship also seem to be more distinct for girls.

[en] THE MEDIATOR ROLE IN MANAGEMENT AND CONFLICT NEGOTIATION IN CONCILIATION HEARINGS / [pt] O PAPEL DO MEDIADOR NO GERENCIAMENTO E NEGOCIAÇÕES DE CONFLITOS EM AUDIÊNCIAS DE CONCILIAÇÃO

WANIA TEREZINHA LADEIRA 20 September 2005 (has links)
[en] Based on Interactional Sociolinguistics and Conversation Analysis theories, this work investigates the mediator role in conflict management between costumers and product and services suppliers in conciliation hearings in a brazilian Small Claim Court (Juizado Especial de Relações de Consumo). The date consist of tape recordings of talk-in-interaction in work place. Conflict resolution in institutional settings is distinct from informal dispute because its procedures define especific roles for each interaction participant. A particular institutional mandate determine a interactional organization where the participants rigths suffer restrictions that are absent in ordinary conversation. Norms expectations, distinct participation status and sequence of procedures are features of conciliation hearings that make possible to identify two moments in the hearings: narrative and negociation. Analysing the mediator role in the narrative moment, it was observed his co-contruction of the consumer narrative by questions and formulations. Thus, the mediator align himself most of the time with the consumer side during the conflict narrative. In the negotiation moment, he may change his alignment in order to do a institutional task of making agreement between disputants. Finally, there is an argument that mediator alignments are oriented by his institutional work.

Top of the tops: Combining searches for Dark Matter with top quarks at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Liberatore, Marianna 23 January 2023 (has links)
Despite the multiple astrophysical and cosmological compelling evidences for Dark Matter, its true nature remains unknown. A motivation to dark matter searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and in particular in the ATLAS experiment, is the especially promising possibility that interactions between ordinary matter and dark matter are mediated by new spin-0 particles. Such particles would extend the Standard Model with a potential dark sector, to which dark matter particles belong. Similarly to the Higgs boson, these new mediators interact strongest with the heaviest particles via Yukawa-type couplings, making them more prone to associated production with heavy-flavour quarks. This thesis presents the results of the statistical combination of two searches targeting dark matter associated production with a top quark pair and a single top quark, targeting two charged leptons in the final state. These two channels present in fact complementary properties and a combination could enhance significantly the sensitivity to dark matter signals. This combination is carried out using 139 fb-1 of pp collision data produced at centre-of-mass of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The results of the combination are interpreted in terms of simplified dark matter models with a spin-0 scalar or pseudoscalar mediator particle. The statistical combination extends the exclusion at 95 % Confidence Level (CL) of masses up to 350 GeV for both scalar and pseudoscalar mediators. The observed upper limits on the cross-section are improved up by 20 %(30 %) for scalar(pseudoscalar) mediator with respect to the best of the individual channel.

Ancestor christology and Jesus' identity : a study based on the Epistle to the Hebrews / Jacob Terhemba Igba

Igba, Jacob Terhemba January 2013 (has links)
The aim in this thesis is to determine whether African ancestor Christology, a contextual attempt to explicate the identity of Jesus within African theology, adequately correlates with and captures the identity of Jesus presented in the exordium of Hebrews 1:1-4. Ancestor Christology utilises the pre-existing notion of the traditional African ancestors as a frame of reference. Consequently, understanding the place and function of the ancestors is essential to this research. This research undertakes a critical and analytical review of ancestor Christology presented in the works of some of the proponents of the concept including Pobee (1979), Nyamiti (1984), Bujo (1992), Bediako (1980, 2004) and Nyende (2005), among others. Using a combination of historical-grammatical exegesis and theological interpretation, this dissertation undertakes an investigation of Hebrews 1:1-4 to evaluate ancestor Christology. 12:1 is examined to determine the place and function of the ancestors in Hebrews. Though this research noted the value of the ancestor Christology concept as a worthwhile attempt towards contextual Christology in Africa, the research argues that the concept is counterproductive because the failure of the concept to capture important aspects of Jesus‘ identity outlined in the exordium translates to presenting Him inadequately. This applies especially to his identity as the summation and perfection of mediation, whose scope of mediation is salvific and redemptive and whose mediation is without an end as signified by his linkage in Hebrews to the king-priest Melchizedek. Furthermore, conceptualising Jesus using ancestor categories has the potential of exasperating the perennial problem of belief in both Jesus and the ancestors as mediators between God and men. / MA (New Testament), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
