Embodied Materials: The Emergence of Figural Imagery in Prehistoric China

Larrive-Bass, Sandrine Simone Mariette January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation explores the emergence of figuration in prehistoric China. It approaches the topic by focusing on image-makers’ engagement with the materials they used to fashion figural works. Chapter 1 presents a survey of zoomorphic and anthropomorphic images created from the Epipaleolithic through the Neolithic periods. It highlights a multiplicity of forms, materials and representational approaches while uncovering recurring patterns. Chapter 2 introduces the principal theories scholars have applied to discuss this corpus, and draws out their similarity with paradigms used in Western scholarship on prehistoric art. The discussion further draws attention to a bi-directional influence exerted on the reception of prehistoric imagery in Europe and China. Chapter 3 focuses on images produced prior to or around 5,000 BCE, and repositions their emergence in the context of broader interests in materiality and representation. The analysis uncovers trends and explores circumstances that notably led image-makers separated in time and space to represent human heads as flat entities. Chapter 4 investigates the role of pareidolia in the emergence of images. It reveals that perceptive imagination informed the creation of some works, when craftspeople drew inspiration from forms in raw materials or artifacts. Chapter 5 explores the possibility that image-makers sought to achieve material-representation synergies. The discussion presents a new taxonomic model addressing materiality and the sensory channels through which figurative images are perceived, and it describes how these factors possibly constituted a core aspect of mimesis. The analysis proposes that some image-makers employed both visual and tactile qualities of substances to represent animals and human beings.

Nurtured beauty: cultivating balance between chance, control, extravagance, and restraint

Unknown Date (has links)
Interested in nurturing beauty, I create paintings that reference life processes through layers of struggle, discovery, recovery and generation. Employing a metaphor of the garden, my paintings can be seen as spaces where I determine what grows, stays, is mulched, or weeded out. I seek a balance between coexisting desires of restraint and control and extravagance with a sense of coming unbound. I emphasize the painting field as a whole, while also paying deep attention to the minute, inviting the viewer to discover complex worlds at different scales within each environment I create. My intimate, domesticated painted environments offer the viewer the possibility to experience the spaces I find beautiful and to add to the conversation of where beauty resides today in contemporary art. / by Kim Spivey. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. / Abstract: The theory of mimesis on Plato's philosophy it almost always was seen in aesthetics sphere and it was interpreted in philosophic and literary tradition like a negative theory. We need that your cause was the accelerate reading and analysis that not considered the educational aspect of mimetic activity. Plato's the theory of education could never set apart the mimesis issue. In contrast with the current interpretative thread, which has pointed out the most the negative aspect of mimesis in men's development, this thesis intends to ferret about the positive aspect of Plato's mimesis in the learning process e knowledge acquisition for the moral development. Emphasizing the importance of this theory the philosopher?s intellectual track, it is supposed that Plato in his last dialog, the Laws, revise the theory of mimesis stressing its importance in moral development of psyche. / Doutorado / Filosofia e História da Educação / Doutor em Educação

Sub for More

Lee, Chelsea 01 January 2017 (has links)
This written thesis unpacks the thoughts and motivations behind the decisions I have made in my artistic practice that have ultimately culminated in my M.F.A. Thesis Exhibition: Sub for More. By merging images of my own work as well as internet sourced images of the culture that drives my work, I have created a platform to begin to understand my experience during graduate school. This text examines and explores my belief in the inherent power in pop culture, my obsession with fame, celebrity, and my self-identity as a participant in current pop-culture.

A junção dos elementos escolhidos para a pesquisa torna possível a estruturação de metodologias e caminhos de codificação e criação / Abstract: "Alphonsus de Guimaraens: Reconstructions of Memory and Recreations within the Body" is a survey that includes memory and performance as sources for a text able to enter in a field of sensations, which it may not be able to translate, but may at least touch some points similar to the ephemeral scenic experience. The text is therefore the result of the way I found to express recreations - experienced in the body - of personal memories that connect me to my great-grandfather, the symbolist poet Alphonsus de Guimaraens (1870-1921). The written thesis is an exercise in creation, as much as the praxis in the staging room. Through poetry I arrived at the man, thus, at the curiosity to know who this man was, able to write poetry amid the monotony of his long provincial days. During the research, I realized that fantasy would be fundamental to recreate that memory and to create a dance full of images, in a different becoming, inherent to the actor's work. The seizure of a sense of uniqueness, cultivated along the trajectory of twenty-six years by Lume, eighteen of which I myself have followed from within (as an active member, creating and researching), was taken at "face value" in this task - which maintained Lume and promoted its intensity. A kind of individual submersion was needed, but connected with the practice of eighteen years of collective discoveries. New is the constellation of factors that make up this specific research, but my experience was built up along many years. Repetition enhances the difference and is able to generate new nuances, sustained, constructed and composed of various elements. Thus, I revisit the methodology of corporeal mimesis and penetrate into a different issue, mimesis of the word as the possibility of filling empty spaces. An active word can contain all the dimensions of the connections of the images it generates, as well as the dimensions of the body, playing with space and time. The Alphonsus de Guimaraens: Reconstruções da Memória e Recriações no Corpo combination of elements chosen for the survey makes it possible to structure methodologies and ways of coding and creation / Doutorado / Artes Cenicas / Doutor em Artes

Eldorado : dramaturgia de ator na intracultura / Eldorado : actor's dramaturgy and intraculture

Okamoto, Eduardo, 1980- 15 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Suzi Frankl Sperber / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-15T00:32:59Z (GMT). / Abstract: The objective of the present work is to localize actor's dramaturgy in the Brazilian context. Its realization was possible departing from the interaction with, observation and imitation (Lume - The Interdisciplinary Nucleus of Theatrical Research of the State University of Campinas has named and systematized these procedures as Body Mimesis) of manufacturers (luthiers) and players of rabeca - Brazilian fiddles: an instrument with bow and string, as the violin, present in several manifestations of popular tradition in Brazil. This thesis is the theoretical synthesis of an actor's research, wich resulted in the performance "Eldorado". Actor's dramaturgy is a possibility of theatre's creation in which the narrative of the show is based on the organization of a physical and vocal repertoire previously encrypted by the actor. Today, this actor's dramaturgy is strongly influenced by cross-cultural principles studied by Theatre Anthropology. This field of research recognizes the actor's bios scenic studying various theatrical traditions in different seasons and geographies. Instead of this cross-cultural examination, this thesis proposes an actor's dramaturgy based on the local circumstances: an actor's dramaturgy in the intracultural research. This study has developed the complementary face of the Theatre Anthropology: instead of the research of general principles of the actor's work, it intends to create this dramaturgy based on the experience of specific features - and its specific dialogue with the general principles. / Doutorado / Doutor em Artes
