The Impact of a Peer Mentor Intervention on Internalized Stigma, Mindfulness, and Adherence to Antiretroviral Medication among Adolescents Living with HIV in Zambia

Based on a step-wedge randomized control trial (intervention n = 136; comparison n = 137), this study investigated the impact of a peer mentor intervention for youth living with HIV aged 15-24 years in Ndola, Zambia. Using piecewise hierarchical linear modeling (HLM), change in internalized stigma predicted change in mindfulness, and mindfulness was a significant predictor of better self-reported adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) across both intervention groups. Intervention group membership did not predict rate of change in mindfulness, but predicted a reduction in internalized stigma and an increase in self-reported ART adherence. Following the peer mentor intervention, internalized stigma was significantly lower in the intervention group than the comparison group. Findings highlight the need to develop and implement interventions specific to adolescents living with HIV with a biopsychosocial approach that attends to both the physical and psychological needs specific to adolescents. Our findings support the inclusion of mindfulness-based components in interventions targeting ART adherence for adolescents living with HIV.

A Place of Wellbeing in Architecture: A Mental Health Museum

Life is meant to be lived with happiness and joy, but what happens when you don't feel as if you're living, and your life feels worthless and filled with sadness? When your daily routine is disrupted? When things go left instead of right? The mental state of many individuals has progressively worsened over the past few years. There are many reasons for this. One being the overwhelming use of mobile devices and living within a digital world which has isolated us from people and communities. This thesis addresses the lack of human interaction and community support through the design of a mental health museum. The project creates a place whose program provides spaces that support wellbeing while designing a museum that explores the issues and history of mental health. The museum provides these spaces that focus on the journey towards a state of well being. While not instantaneous, the journey within the museum is both physical and psychological. The journey within the museum is experienced through a series of ramps that flow through the building, acting as a transition from one exhibit space to the other. The ramps allow the visitors to slowly move between galleries, providing time to walk and, perhaps, reflect and understand the contents of the exhibits, as well as to benefit the visitors in other ways. One of the overarching goals for the museum was to create a safe space or spaces for those who visit. As well as a journey that becomes one of mindfulness and consists of learning, reflecting, engaging, and decompressing from the stress of living in today's world. The thesis and museum addresses four ideas: Learning through exhibits and talks hosted in the lecture hall or resources within the bookstore. Reflecting while traveling to the next gallery space, or on the rooftop garden. Engaging in wellness areas through interactive displays, galleries, or use of a wellness room. Decompressing within the planted areas and green spaces intertwined with the museum's journey and the adjacent woodland with its walking trail to the nearby community garden. This thesis opens up a conversation about mental health through the design of the museum to spark the topic as a positive, encouraging and natural subject of discussion. / Master of Architecture / The mental state of many individuals has progressively worsened over the past few years. This thesis addresses the lack of human interaction and community support through the design of a mental health museum. When it comes to mental illness, from the start of symptoms and receiving treatment there is an average 11 year gap. The stigma about mental illness and mental health can be seen as a cause for this delay. Everyone is affected by mental health in one way or another. Specifically communities of low-income. The resources for mental health in these neighborhoods are low. Which is why the museum is located in Washington, D.C. across the Anacostia River in Ward 8; one of two of the poorest wards in DC. The St. Elizabeths Hospital East Campus, located in ward 8, is in the process of being redeveloped. In redevelopment is my addition of a mental health museum that contains spaces for learning, reflecting, engaging, and decompressing. This thesis opens up a conversation about mental health through the design of the museum to spark the topic as a positive, encouraging and natural subject of discussion. The project is designed to create spaces for connecting with others who have found themselves wanting to learn about the history of mental health as well as view artwork created about mental health.

The Effect of Educational Versus Recreational Screen Time on Depression Levels Among University Students

Despite the amount of people currently using technology and the overwhelming amount of data already presented on the topic of how technology affects a person's mental health, there seems to be little information on how the different types of activities on the different types of screens affect university student's mental states. This research study examined the amount of time that a University of Central Florida (UCF) student spends on what was defined as educational activities in front of screens and what was defined as recreational. The definitions of what is educational and what is recreational screen time came from a previously published study (Salzano et al., 2021). These dimensions of screen time have never been investigated like this before. This data was then compared to the student's current level of depression (among other factors) to see if more time per day, in a particular screen time group, affects a university student's mental state. This information is extremely important to investigate as understanding if certain activities affect a university student's mental health could lead us to lower the increasing level of depression in this country if those screen activities are limited (Duffy et al., 2019). In the end 449 currently enrolled UCF student responses were recorded and it was determined that the data did not support the hypothesis. According to this study the amount of screen time, whether it be educational or recreational, did not influence any aspect of a university student's mental health whether it be depression, stress, or mindfulness as there was no difference between any of the scores at the different screen time values. If this study was to be conducted again, perhaps more participants could be included, or a different scale of screen time could be used to obtain different results.

Mindfulness för sjuksköterskor : En litteraturöversikt

Sjuksköterskor står inför betydande utmaningar i sin yrkesroll, vilket ofta resulterar i stress och emotionell utmattning. Mindfulness har föreslagits som ett verktyg för att hantera dessa utmaningar och förbättra vårdkvaliteten. Trots dess potentiella fördelar finns det en brist på djupgående förståelse av sjuksköterskors erfarenheter med att implementera mindfulness i sitt arbete. Detta examensarbete syftar därför till att beskriva sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att implementera mindfulness i det kliniska arbetet. En allmän litteraturöversikt genomfördes för att samla och analysera befintlig forskning om ämnet. Artiklarna söktes fram i två olika databaser. Totalt nio artiklar analyserades och presenterades i resultatet. Resultatet visade att sjuksköterskor upplevde förbättrat psykiskt välbefinnande, ökad närvaro i patientvården, och förbättrade arbetsrelationer genom mindfulness-interventioner. Dessa effekter bidrog till att förbättra både sjuksköterskornas arbetsprestanda och kvaliteten på patientvården. Resultaten bekräftar vikten av mindfulness som ett verktyg för sjuksköterskors psykiska hälsa och arbetsprestanda. Mindfulness bidrar till en mer empatisk och patientcentrerad vård. Utmaningar som tidsbrist och emotionella hinder identifierades, vilket understryker behovet av fortsatt forskning och integration av mindfulness i sjuksköterskans utbildning och praktik.

Medveten övning : Hur en förbättrad övningsrutin kan hjälpa musiker att undvika negativa tankar

I denna uppsats undersöktes hur de negativa tankar som finns hos många musiker kan hanteras. Med hjälp av förbättrad övningsmetodik, samt andra metoder för medveten närvaro observerades hur fokus och humör förändrades hos musiker, samt hur detta påverkade deras prestation och självbild. Till hjälp för detta dokumenterades instuderingen av Hindemiths violakonsert ”Der Schwanendreher” inför och under examenskonsert, en situation där negativa tankar ofta kan dyka upp. Resultatet visade att man med små men väl genomtänkta medel kunde göra stor skillnad för koncentrationsnivån, och det allmänna välbefinnandet. Vidare gavs exempel på hur övningen kan läggas upp för att bli mer produktiv och rolig, samt hur samhällets krav på klassiska musiker bidrar till psykisk ohälsa.
