顧客生命週期及獲利力之相關性─田野實證研究 / The Relationship between Customer Lifetime and Customer Profitability:Field Empirical Evidences

在以往探討非財務性績效指標與財務績效指標關係的相關文獻中,大多以品質、顧客滿意度、瑕疵率及準時送達率為主,甚少討論顧客生命週期時間(customer lifetime)。本研究主要探索顧客生命週期時間與顧客獲利力的關係、顧客生命週期時間的影響因素與多重通路的相關議題。 本文以一家大型電視購物業的公司為個案,64,632名顧客30個月的交易資料為樣本,實證結果發現:(一) 顧客生命週期時間與顧客獲利力的關係為正向關係。(二)顧客的交易金額與顧客生命週期時間呈正向關係;平均間隔購買時間、自有品牌與耐久財對顧客生命週期時間的關係為反向關係;退貨次數與顧客生命週期時間是U字形關係。(三)自電視購物通路所取得的顧客,未來的顧客生命週期時間會較短,但自型錄通路所取得的顧客則會較長;來自電視通路的顧客利潤顯著高於其它通路。(四)使用多重通路的顧客其顧客生命週期時間顯著高於單一通路的使用者,但顧客利潤則顯著低於單一通路的使用者。 / Non-financial measures have been widely advocated and adopted, such as quality, customer satisfaction, defective rate, and on-time delivery rate. However, empirical research has little focus on customer lifetime. This study explores (1) the relationship between customer lifetime and customer profitability; (2) the determinants of customer lifetime; (3) the impact of multi-channel shopping on customer profitability and customer lifetime. Using 64,632 customers level data (30 months) from a large TV Shopping company, this study finds: (1) the relationship between customer lifetime and customer profitability is positive; (2) customer transaction amount is positively related to customer lifetime duration; average interpurchase time, private brand, and durable goods are negatively related to customer lifetime duration; the relationship between customer’s return frequency and customer lifetime is U shape; (3) the customer lifetime duration of TV channel customers is shorter than that of other channel customers, but the customer profitability of TV channel customers is larger than that of other channel customers; (4) the customer lifetime duration of multi-channel customers is longer than that of single channel shoppers, but the customer profitability of multi-channel customers is less than that of single channel customers.

多重通路互補與替代關係之探討-以台灣銀行業為例 / The Study of the Complementarity and Substitution Relationship of Multiple Channels-By Example of Taiwan Banking Industry

多重通路的經營型態於台灣已呈現穩定發展的狀態。然而,在過往研究中多重通路之間的關係較多從廠商的角度探討通路衝突與互補的情形,忽略了學者Stewart 與 Pavlou (2002)所強調:「多重通路間彼此互補或替代的關係,應由消費者的觀點來加以檢視」。本研究從消費者的角度,檢視在消費者心中不同通路之間呈現出替代亦或是互補的關係。以銀行業為研究背景,並以近半年內曾使用多重通路辦理銀行相關業務的民眾為抽樣對象,同時採用網路問卷以及人員訪問的方式,收回有效問卷共365份。藉由多元迴歸分析,針對銀行所提供之廣泛性決策與非廣泛性決策型業務,從服務品質的角度,探討消費者在實體通路與網路通路中的顧客滿意度對消費者未來持續與該銀行往來意願之影響。並藉由消費者對不同通路之顧客滿意度的交互作用分析,推論在消費者心中多重通路彼此間的互補或替代關係。 研究結果顯示,針對廣泛性決策型業務: 1. 消費者「對實體銀行服務人員相關的滿意度」以及「對網路銀行的整體滿意度」,皆對未來持續往來意圖有顯著的正向影響。 2. 網路銀行整體價值與實體銀行中的環境及便利性間呈現出互補的效果。 針對非廣泛性決策型業務: 1. 消費者「對實體銀行服務人員相關的滿意度」以及「對網路銀行的資訊提供滿意度」,皆對未來持續往來意圖有顯著的正向影響。 2. 網路銀行交易價值與實體銀行中的服務人員間呈現出互補的效果。 3. 網路銀行交易價值與實體銀行中的環境及便利性間呈現出替代的效果。 / The multi-channel business model has been stable development in Taiwan. However, most of the researches toward the channel relationship within the multi-channel environment focused on the corporation perspective in the past research, but ignored what Stewart and Pavlou (2002) have stressed that substitution and complementarity of different channels should be examined from a customer perspective. This research surveyed the channel relationship from the perspective of the consumer. The research chose the banking industry environment, and targeted the consumer who has applied multiple channels in dealing with banking related service in the last 6 months. The survey collected 365 valid questionnaires by adopting internet survey and people interview. By using multiple regression analysis, the research differentiated the extensive and non-extensive decision making services and probed the impact of the satisfaction in brick-and-motar (B&M) channel and internet channel toward the intention to continuous dealing with the bank company with the view of service quality. By adopting interactive analysis of customer satisfaction in different channels, the research deduced the relationship of multiple channels. The research concludes that for the extensive decision making services: 1. The satisfaction of the employee in the B&M bank and the satisfaction of the internet bank both have significant positive impact toward the intention to continuous dealing with the bank company. 2. There is complementarity effect between the overall value of the internet bank and the environment and convenience of the B&M bank. For the non-extensive decision making services: 1. The satisfaction of the employee in the B&M bank and the satisfaction of the information providing in the internet bank both have significant positive impact toward the intention to continuous dealing with the bank company. 2. There is complementarity effect between the trading value of the internet bank and the employee of the B&M bank. For the non-extensive decision making services: 3. There is substitution effect between the trading value of the internet bank and the environment and convenience of the B&M bank.

多網卡無線網狀網路下支援點對點串流的品質感知多重骨幹建置設計 / Quality-Aware Multiple Backbone Construction on Multi-interface Wireless Mesh Networks for P2P Streaming

無線網狀網路(WMNs)為目前熱門的廣域無線網路接取技術。使用者可以透過WMNs隨時在各處使用即時影音播放的服務。相較於傳統的主從式架構,低成本且容易建置的點對點架構更適用於影音串流的應用;在進行即時影音播放的時候,影音播放的品質便為相當重要的目標。因為多媒體應用服務對於延遲及網路傳輸效能相當敏感,且WMNs的傳輸過程中常會面臨同頻道干擾的問題而使得傳輸的效能銳減,當每個網路節點都具有多張無線網路卡時,如何善用WMNs多頻道傳輸的特性提升效能更是顯得特別重要。在本篇論文中,我們利用WMNs多頻道傳輸的特性進行多媒體群播傳輸,參考史坦納樹的概念來改善現有的MAODV路由演算法,以傳輸品質較佳的鏈結改良原本尋找最小跳躍數路徑的方式,建立兩棵完全互斥的群播樹作為點對點傳輸的骨幹網路,並以MDC的概念將影像串流編碼成兩份獨立的子串流分別經由不同的群播樹傳輸。經實驗評估,我們的方法在網路負載較高的環境下能有效的降低延遲並提高整體系統的效能。 / In WMNs, users can enjoy the real-time video streaming service anytime and anywhere through the services. Compared to the client/server model, P2P approaches is more suitable for video streaming applications because of its low cost and easy deployment. But when using the real-time multimedia service in WMNs, the multimedia applications are very sensitive to delay time and the performance of packets transmission. And the performance is significantly influenced by the co-channel interference, so that it is important to know how to transmit by multi-channel to enhance the performance. In our approach, we choose the better quality links for routing instead of the minimum hop-count path in MAODV. Then we distribute the video streaming to receivers by multicast in multi-channel WMNs, and refer to the Steiner tree concept to modify the MAODV routing protocol to construct two disjoint multicast trees as the backbone for the P2P structure. Therefore, we can adopt the MDC scheme to encode the video into two independent sub-streams and transmit separately along these trees. Experiment results show that in higher network traffic load environment, our scheme is more effective to reduce the latency and improve overall system performance.

This study integrates borehole, surface and laboratory measurements for a geotechnical investigation that is focused on investigating shear-wave velocity (Vs) variation and its implication to geotechnical aspects of the Ogden test site in eastern Kansas. The area has a potential of seismicity due to the seismic zone associated with the Nemaha formation where earthquakes pose a moderate hazard. This study is in response to recent design standards for bridge structures require integrating comprehensive geotechnical site characterization. Furthermore, evaluation of dynamic soil properties is important for proper seismic response analysis and soil modeling programs. In this study, near surface geophysical site characterization in the form of 2D shear-wave velocity (Vs) structure that is compared with laboratory measurements of elastic moduli and earth properties at simulated in situ overburden pressure conditions and synergy with downhole Acoustic Televiewer time and amplitude logs, proved very robust “validated” workflow in site characterization for geotechnical purposes. An important component of a geotechnical site characterization is the evaluation of in-situ shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio and reliable and accurate elastic modulus ([lambda]) and shear modulus ([mu]) estimates are important in a good geotechnical site characterization. The geophysical site characterization, undertaken in this study, will complement and help in extrapolating drilling and core-based properties deduced by the geotechnical engineers interested at the test site.

[pt] Este trabalho mostra a implantação de técnicas de Controle Estatístico de Processo (CEP) em uma indústria de cosméticos, em uma situação em que as técnicas convencionais não são aplicáveis. O processo a ser controlado é constituído de oito canais, que produzem em um mesmo instante de tempo oito unidades de um mesmo produto. Tal processo possui a peculiaridade de ter médias variáveis no tempo, mesmo em estado de controle estatístico. Como os métodos de controle propostos na literatura para processos com múltiplos canais têm como premissa médias constantes ao longo do tempo e os canais terem médias e variâncias semelhantes, tais métodos não são aplicáveis ao processo em questão. Para o CEP do processo, então, foi desenvolvida uma metodologia adaptada à realidade da empresa, que conjuga os princípios de group charts e de gráficos de controle de aceitação. Foi ainda realizada uma revisão bibliográfica de algumas técnicas de controle estatístico de processos com múltiplos canais, contemplando métodos tradicionais e não tradicionais. / [en] This study shows the implantation of techniques of Statistical Process Control (SPC) in a cosmetics industry, in a situation in which conventional techniques are not applicable. The process to be controlled is composed of eight streams, which produce eight units of the product at a time. The process has the peculiarity that the means of the streams change in time, even in a condition of statistical control. The control schemes proposed in the literature hitherto for multiple-stream processes assume constant means, and streams with similar means and variance, and are therefore not applicable to this process. A new scheme was then developed for the statistical control of the process, which blends the principles of the group charts and of acceptance control charts. A review was also presented of some techniques of statistical control of multiple-stream processes, including traditional and more recent methods.

Étude et prototypage d'une nouvelle méthode d'accès aléatoire multi-canal multi-saut pour les réseaux locaux sans fil / Study and prototyping of a new multi-channel and multi-hop random MAC layer for WSN

L’émergence de l’Internet des Objets révolutionne les réseaux locaux sans fil et inspirent de nombreuses applications. L’une des problématiques majeures pour les réseaux locaux sans fil est l’accès et le partage du médium radio sans fil. Plusieurs protocoles MAC mono-canal ont été proposés et abordent cette problématique avec des solutions intéressantes. Néanmoins, certains problèmes majeurs liés à l’accès au canal (nœud caché, synchronisation, propagation des RDV…) pour un contexte de transmission multi-saut, persistent encore et font toujours l’objet d’intenses études de la communauté scientifique, surtout lorsqu’il s’agit de réseaux de capteurs sans fil distribués sur des topologies étendues. Certains travaux de recherches ont proposé des protocoles MAC multi-canal, traitant souvent le cas idéal, où tous les nœuds dans le réseau sont à portée les uns des autres. Les émissions et réceptions des trames de données sont généralement précédées de trames des contrôles pour l’établissement de Rendez-vous (RDV) entre les nœuds concernés. Nous constatons que les RDV ne garantissent pas la réservation des canaux de façon déterministe sans conflit entre les nœuds dans le réseau, et peuvent rendre difficile les transmissions en multi-saut. Une solution complexe serait de propager ces RDV vers les voisins du nœud récepteur au-delà de 2 sauts. C’est face à cette complexité de gestion de RDV multi-sauts que s’inscrit notre contribution. Il s’agit pour nous de proposer une méthode d’accès multi-canal aléatoire sans RDV, en topologie multi-saut. Notre solution est implémentée sur un testbedréel constitué de nœuds WiNo mono-interface, elle est basée sur la méthode ALOHA slottée améliorée pour notre contexte multi-canal, dont nous évaluons les performances qui sont comparées au cas mono-canal. Un modèle analytique lié au contexte multi-canal sans RDV a été développé également, et comparé aux résultats de notre testbed. / The emergence of the Internet of Thingsrevolutionizeswireless local area networks and inspiringnumerous applications. Someresearch has proposed multi-channel MAC protocols, oftenaddressingthe ideal case, where all nodes in the network are within range of eachother. The transmissions and receptions of the data frames aregenerallypreceded by controls frames for the establishment of Rendez-Vous (RDV) among the nodesconcerned. Wefindthat the RDVs do not guarantee the channelsreservation in a deterministicwaywithoutconflictamong the nodes in the network, and maymakeitdifficult the multi-hop transmissions. A complex solution wouldbe to propagatetheseRDVs to the neighbors of the receivernodebeyond 2 hops. Facedwiththiscomplexity of multi-hop RDV management thatmakesour contribution. It is important for us to propose arandom multi-channelaccessmethodwithout RDV, in multi-hop topology. Our solution isimplemented on a real testbed made of multi-channel single-interface “WiNo” nodes, of whichweevaluate the performance that are compared to the single-channel case. An analytical model related to the multi-channelcontextwithout RDV wasalsodeveloped, and compared to the results of ourtestbed.

Protocolo assíncrono de acesso ao meio iniciado pelo receptor para redes de sensores sem fio / Asynchronous receiver-initiated media access protocol for wireless sensor networks

A internet das coisas é considerada um novo sistema de comunicação que promete otimizar e melhorar diferentes áreas de aplicação com base em módulos sensores e objetos unicamente interligados através da internet. Em aplicações de redes de sensores sem fio em larga escala, as redes possuem características peculiares, como grande quantidade de módulos sensores de baixa potência, consumo limitado e perdas de comunicação intermitentes. Estas redes precisam operar com protocolos escaláveis e eficientes em termos de consumo de energia. Desta forma, esta tese propõe um protocolo multicanal assíncrono iniciado pelo receptor de acesso ao meio para redes de sensores sem fio de baixa potência para aplicações de internet das coisas. Através de uma comparação com soluções já existentes, o protocolo apresentado procura mitigar a colisão de mensagens e as perdas de energia com ociosidade na espera pela comunicação de um transmissor, através de um mecanismo de reconhecimento inicial eficiente. Adicionalmente, é proposto um diagnóstico efetivo de detecção de falha na comunicação ainda no ciclo de comunicação, de forma a auxiliar a economia de energia. Complementarmente, é proposto um mecanismo multicanal baseado no conhecimento do canal da vizinhança, além de serviços de inicialização e manutenção da rede. Para validação da proposta, o protocolo proposto foi comparado tanto com protocolos assíncronos multicanais iniciado pelo receptor quanto com protocolo síncrono relevantes na literatura científica. Os critérios de avaliação utilizados foram medição do consumo, latência e taxa de entrega da rede em diferentes cenários. Os resultados mostraram que o protocolo proposto minimiza o consumo de energia em relação aos protocolos assíncronos, além de melhorar a comunicação quando comparado aos protocolos analisados. Na comparação com o protocolo síncrono, demonstrou desempenho e consumo compatíveis, quando em período de trabalho menor, e consumo reduzido com períodos de trabalho maiores. / The Internet of Things is considered a new communication system that promises to optimize and improve different application areas. It is based on sensor modules and intelligent objects only interconnected through the internet. In large-scale wireless sensor network applications, networks have own specific characteristics such as many low-power, limited-power sensor modules with intermittent communication losses. These networks need to operate with scalable, energy-efficient protocols. Thus, this thesis proposes an asynchronous multichannel receiver-initiated MAC protocol for low power wireless sensor networks and internet of things applications. Through a comparison with already existing solutions, the proposed protocol tries to mitigate message containment and the effect of idle listening through an efficient initial recognition mechanism. It is also proposed an effective diagnosis of communication failure detection in the communication cycle, which also helps to save energy. In addition, a multichannel mechanism is proposed based on the knowledge of the neighborhood channel in addition to services of initialization and maintenance of the network. To validate the proposed protocol, evaluations were made for the consumption of each node sensor, the network traffic for each link, the latency and the network delivery rate in a web application. Tests were performed using asynchronous multichannel receiver-initiated and synchronous protocols based on literature scientific. The results show that the proposed protocol minimizes the energy consumption in relation to the asynchronous protocols, besides improving the communication when compared to the analyzed protocols. In the comparison with the synchronous protocol the proposed protocol showed performance and consumption compatible, when in a smaller duty cycles, and reduced consumption with longer duty cycles.

Kooperatives Forwarding in drahtlosen Maschennetzen

In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden praktische Protokolle für spontane drahtlose Multi-Hop Maschennetze vorgestellt, diese betrachten das drahtlose System ganzheitlich und berücksichtigen damit die Besonderheiten des drahtlosen Mediums, wie Fading, Interferenz sowie starke Signaldämpfung aufgrund von Entfernung bzw. Hindernissen. Interferenz ist eine Hauptursache für Paketverlust, Durchsatz und Latenz können durch die gleichzeitige Verwendung mehrerer interferenzfreier Kanäle verbessert werden. In Sensor- bzw. Community-Netzen kommt preiswerte und energiesparende Hardware zum Einsatz, die Verwendung zusätzlicher Antennen bzw. Radios ist deshalb nicht möglich. Andererseits werden aber zukünftige drahtlose Netze eine 100-mal höhere Knotendichte, verglichen mit heutigen Netzen, zeigen. Durch die Ausnutzung der im System inhärent vorliegenden Ressource Nutzer (Multi-User Diversität) werden durch Kooperation virtuelle Multi-Antennen und Multi-Radiosysteme aufgebaut. Aufgrund des großen Abstands zwischen den Knoten erreicht man erstens eine hohe räumliche Diversität und zweitens lassen sich damit auch negative Effekte, wie Interferenz zwischen benachbarten Kanälen, minimieren. Es werden Algorithmen sowohl für die Mediumzugriff- als auch die Routing-Schicht vorgestellt. Da keine spezielle physikalische Schicht notwendig ist, kann IEEE 802.11 verwendet werden. Schließlich kann auch auf die bereits heute verfügbare IEEE 802.11 Hardware, die nur eine Kanalumschaltzeit im Millisekundenbereich erlaubt, zurückgegriffen werden. Die zwei vorgestellten Protokolle eignen sich für Umgebungen mit hoher bzw. geringer Interferenz durch fremde WiFi-Netze. Bezüglich Durchsatz werden moderne Protokolle, wie DSR auf Basis von IEEE 802.11 und ETX-Metrik, um ein Vielfaches übertroffen, außerdem ist die Latenz klein und das TCP/IP-Protokoll kann unverändert verwendet werden. / In this work practical protocols are introduced for spontaneous wireless multi-hop mesh networks which contemplate the wireless system integrally and therefore take into account particular features of the wireless medium, like fading, interference as well as strong signal attenuation due to distance or obstacles. Interference is one of the main causes for packet loss. Throughput and latency can be improved by the simultaneous use of several non-interfering channels. In sensor or community networks inexpensive and energy-saving hardware is used. Additional antennas or radios are impossible therefore; on the other hand future wireless networks will show a 100 times higher node density in comparison with today''s networks, however. By the usage of the resource user (multi-user diversity), that is inherently present in the system virtual multi-antennas and multi-radio systems can be built up by cooperation. Firstly, a high spatial diversity can be achieved due to the large distance between the nodes and secondly, negative effects like interference can be minimized between neighboring channels. Algorithms are introduced both for medium access and routing layer. Since a special physical layer is not required IEEE 802.11 can be used. These days already available 802.11 hardware, which allows a channel switching time in milliseconds, is finally usable. The two protocols introduced here are suitable for environments with a high or low interference caused by foreign WiFi networks. Regarding their performance modern protocols like DSR based on 802.11 and ETX metric are surpassed by far. Moreover, the latency is small and the TCP/IP protocol can be used in its unchanged form.

[pt] Esta dissertação trata do controle estatístico de processos (CEP) multi-canal, assunto pouco tratado na literatura especializada. As técnicas encontradas na literatura pressupõem condições de validade nem sempre verificadas na prática, a saber: medidas sucessivas efetuadas em cada canal independentes e identicamente distribuídas; todos os canais ajustados, com mesma média e desvio-padrão; e (na maioria dos trabalhos) canais independentes, sem correlação cruzada. O estudo foi motivado por um caso real, em que nenhuma dessas condições se verifica. Este trabalho propõe adaptações e extensões de técnicas existentes para lidar com processos nessa situação; detalha como aplicá-las; ilustra sua aplicação no caso prático analisado; discute limitações e propõe alternativas, e inicia uma discussão sobre as diferentes condições (características das situações práticas) em que cada uma das alternativas é mais apropriada. O trabalho iniciou- se com uma análise exploratória dos processos da empresa, de modo a permitir um diagnóstico do CEP que vinha sendo realizado, e fundamentar a proposta de um novo esquema de controle, mais adequado. O esquema proposto, aplicado aos dados, sinalizou problemas com os processos que as técnicas empregadas não sinalizavam. Embora, em virtude dos prazos para finalização da dissertação e da programação da produção da empresa, que teve interrupções, não tenha sido possível incluir nesta análise a investigação de causas especiais, com revisão dos limites de controle e utilização dos gráficos assim revistos no monitoramento on line, para fins de acompanhamento do desempenho do esquema proposto, mesmo assim a aplicação desse esquema aos dados disponíveis demonstrou ser ele mais sensível a causas especiais que os gráficos que vinham sendo utilizados, e levantou algumas questões, não abordadas na literatura, que são indicadas para pesquisa futura. / [en] This dissertation tackles the problem of statistical control of multi-channel processes, which has been scarcely dealt with in the specialized literature. The techniques found in the literature assume validity conditions which are not always verified in practice, namely: successive measurements taken in each channel should be independent an identically distributed; all the channels should be adjusted, with same mean and standard deviation; and most works assume the channels to be independent, with no cross correlation. The study was motivated by a real case, in which no one of these conditions holds. This work proposes adaptations and extensions of existing techniques in order to deal with this and similar real situations; details the application of the adapted/extended techniques; illustrates their application in the case under analysis; discusses limitations and proposes alternatives, and initiates a discussion about the different conditions (practical situations´ characteristics) in which each alternative is most appropriate. The work began with an exploratory data analysis of the enterprise´s production processes, so as to enable a diagnosis of the statistical process control procedures that were in use, and serve as a basis for the proposal of a new, more adequate, control scheme. The proposed scheme, when applied to the data, signalled problems with the processes which the techniques in use did not signal. Due to the deadlines for ending this dissertation and to programmed interruptions in the production, it has not been possible to include in the analysis the search for special causes with corresponding revisions of the charts´ control limits and the use of the revised charts in on-line monitoring, for the purposes of feedback on the proposed scheme´s performance. Its application to the available data has nevertheless shown it more sensitive to special causes than the charts that were in use, and raised some issues not approached in the literature, which are left as indications for future research.

Design and Analysis of Opportunistic MAC Protocols for Cognitive Radio Wireless Networks

As more and more wireless applications/services emerge in the market, the already heavily crowded radio spectrum becomes much scarcer. Meanwhile, however,as it is reported in the recent literature, there is a large amount of radio spectrum that is under-utilized. This motivates the concept of cognitive radio wireless networks that allow the unlicensed secondary-users (SUs) to dynamically use the vacant radio spectrum which is not being used by the licensed primary-users (PUs). In this dissertation, we investigate protocol design for both the synchronous and asynchronous cognitive radio networks with emphasis on the medium access control (MAC) layer. We propose various spectrum sharing schemes, opportunistic packet scheduling schemes, and spectrum sensing schemes in the MAC and physical (PHY) layers for different types of cognitive radio networks, allowing the SUs to opportunistically utilize the licensed spectrum while confining the level of interference to the range the PUs can tolerate. First, we propose the cross-layer based multi-channel MAC protocol, which integrates the cooperative spectrum sensing at PHY layer and the interweave-based spectrum access at MAC layer, for the synchronous cognitive radio networks. Second, we propose the channel-hopping based single-transceiver MAC protocol for the hardware-constrained synchronous cognitive radio networks, under which the SUs can identify and exploit the vacant channels by dynamically switching across the licensed channels with their distinct channel-hopping sequences. Third, we propose the opportunistic multi-channel MAC protocol with the two-threshold sequential spectrum sensing algorithm for asynchronous cognitive radio networks. Fourth, by combining the interweave and underlay spectrum sharing modes, we propose the adaptive spectrum sharing scheme for code division multiple access (CDMA) based cognitive MAC in the uplink communications over the asynchronous cognitive radio networks, where the PUs may have different types of channel usage patterns. Finally, we develop a packet scheduling scheme for the PU MAC protocol in the context of time division multiple access (TDMA)-based cognitive radio wireless networks, which is designed to operate friendly towards the SUs in terms of the vacant-channel probability. We also develop various analytical models, including the Markov chain models, M=GY =1 queuing models, cross-layer optimization models, etc., to rigorously analyze the performance of our proposed MAC protocols in terms of aggregate throughput, access delay, and packet drop rate for both the saturation network case and non-saturation network case. In addition, we conducted extensive simulations to validate our analytical models and evaluate our proposed MAC protocols/schemes. Both the numerical and simulation results show that our proposed MAC protocols/schemes can significantly improve the spectrum utilization efficiency of wireless networks.
