Contudo, h? pouco relatos sobre as atividades das dextranas com figura??o do tipo ? (alfa). Nesse contexto, dextranas (?-D-glucanas) extra?das da bact?ria Leuconostoc mesenteroides, com massas moleculares de 10 (D10), 40 (D40) e 147 (D147) kDa e seus derivados fosforilados P10, P40 e P147 foram avaliados quanto ao seu potencial antioxidante, anticoagulante e imunomodulador pela primeira vez, com o intuito de elucidar compostos com atividades potentes e pouco t?xicas. An?lises de espectroscopia de infravermelho, composi??o monossacar?dica e dosagens qu?micas comprovaram que estas dextranas s?o o mesmo polissacar?deo, mas com massas moleculares diferentes, al?m de confirmar o sucesso da fosforila??o. Nenhuma das dextranas tem atividade anticoagulante. No teste do poder redutor verificou-se que D147 e P147 foram duas vezes mais potentes que as outras dextranas. Por outro lado, as seis amostras tiveram atividade semelhante (50%) em sequestrar o radical OH. Frente ao sequestro do ?on super?xido, apenas D10 teve uma atividade pronunciada (50%). D40 foi a ?nica dextrana nativa com a??o imunomodulat?ria, pois estimulou em dobro a prolifera??o de macr?fagos mur?nicos (RAW 264.7) e dobrou a libera??o de NO por essas c?lulas, tanto na aus?ncia como na presen?a de LPS. Al?m disso D40 teve maior atividade sequestradora (50%) de per?xido de hidrog?nio, o que fez com que ela tamb?m fosse a dextrana mais potente em inibir peroxida??o lip?dica (70%). J? P147 apresentou maior atividade quelante de ?ons ferro e cobre (~85%), al?m de aumentar o triplo a libera??o de NO na aus?ncia e na presen?a de LPS. P10 provou ser o composto mais efetivo sobre a prolifera??o de macr?fagos. Os dados indicam que dextranas com massa aproximada de 40 kDa s?o as ideais para serem utilizadas como antioxidantes e imunomoduladores, podendo ter suas atividades potencializadas com o processo de fosforila??o. Contudo, estudos futuros com D40 e outras dextranas de massa semelhante confirmar?o esta hip?tese. / Glucans are polysaccharides with different pharmacological and biological activities described. However, there are some reports about the activities of the glucan type ? (alpha). In this context, a group of ?-D-glucans called dextrans extracted from Leuconostoc mesenteroides bacteria, with molecular weights of 10 (D10), 40 (D40) and 147 (D147) kDa and their phosphorylated derivatives P10, P40 and P147, were evaluated as for their antioxidant, anticoagulant and immunomodulatory potential for the first time, in order to elucidate compounds with potent activities and low toxicity. Infrared spectroscopy analysis, monosaccharide composition and chemical dosages showed that these dextrans are the same polysaccharide, but with different molecular weights, besides confirming the success of phosphorylation. None presented with anticoagulant features. The reducing power test showed that D147 was twice as potent as other dextrans. On the other hand, all six samples showed similar activity (50%) when it came to scavenging the OH radical. To the superoxide ion scavenging, only D10 had a pronounced activity (50%). D40 was the single native dextran that presented with immunomodulatory features since it double stimulated the proliferation of murine macrophages (RAW 264.7) and double the release of nitric oxide by the cells, both in the absence and presence of lipopolysaccharides (LPS). In addition, D40 showed a greater scavenging activity (50%) for the hydrogen peroxide, which caused it to also be the more potent dextran when it came to inhibiting lipid peroxidation (70%). On other hand, P147 showed the highest iron and copper ion chelation activity (~85%). P10 proved be the most effective compound to macrophage proliferation. The results point toward dextrans with a 40 kDa weight as being ideal for antioxidant and immunomodulatory use, could be supplemented with phosphorylated derivatives. However, future studies with the D40 and other similarly dextrans are to confirm this hypothesis.

Utiliza a metodologia da pesquisa a??o considerando que a abordagem interpretativa ? desenvolvida pelo autor desta Pesquisa enquanto regente e diretor art?stico da Orquestra Funffec de Cordas (OFC). O contexto social da OFC inclui um trabalho desenvolvido a partir do ano de 2013 e conta com a participa??o de jovens com idade entre 10 e 22 anos. Este Projeto possui uma base t?cnica norteada pelos m?todos tradicionais no ensino de cordas friccionadas escritos, em sua maioria, no s?culo XIX. O objetivo da pesquisa ? apontar as principais dificuldades encontradas no trabalho deste repert?rio em rela??o ?s t?cnicas estendidas. Deste ponto, busca-se explorar as possibilidades e vari?veis oferecidas e, atrav?s do di?logo e pesquisa, estabelecer um crit?rio para a interpreta??o. A comunica??o nos ensaios abriu espa?os para a opini?o dos jovens m?sicos na tentativa de estabelecer um processo em que suas experimenta??es e concep??es de sonoridades pudessem ser aplicadas no processo de interpreta??o do repert?rio proposto. / Presents a experience of work of the performance construction where the conductor acts as mediator in the interpretative process, using as tool the extended techniques of two works: The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) and Intiner?rio de Passagem: Ver?nica Nadir by Silvio Ferraz (1959-). We used the action research methodology, considering that the interpretative approach is developed by the author of this research as a conductor and artistic director of the Orquestra Funffec de Cordas (OFC). The social context of the OFC includes a work which was developed since 2013 and it counts on the participation of young people with ages between 10 and 22 years old. This project has a technical base guided by the traditional methods on the teaching of written friction strings, mostly, in the 19th century. The purpose of this research is to identify the main difficulties encountered in the work of this repertoire in relation of the extended techniques, in the point of view seeks to explore the possibilities and available variables and trough this dialog and research, stablish a criterion to the interpretation. After the work of theoretical work and analytical articulation of the work, we established the process of the interpretative construction especially in what concerns the extended technique used by the compositors mentioned above. In this way, elements of the extended techniques were mentioned, such as its concepts and applications and the possible sound result. The communication on the rehearsal opened up space to the opinion of the young musicians on the attempt of stablish a process which its experimentations and conceptions of sonority could be applied on the process of interpretation and suggested repertoire.

Este trabalho avaliou a efici?ncia da fotocat?lise heterog?nea de materiais de ni?bio na oxida??o de metanol e na inativa??o do microrganismo Escherichia Coli. Foram sintetizados catalisadores a base de ni?bio Nb2O5 e foram feitas imobiliza??es (coating) utilizando ?xido de ni?bio. Diante das caracteriza??es, foi poss?vel verificar a forma??o de esp?cies de ?xido de ni?bio e niobatos de s?dio dependendo da metodologia de s?ntese adotada. Esses materiais foram avaliados na oxida??o de metanol em diferentes concentra??es de catalisadores e apresentaram uma efici?ncia na forma??o do formalde?do proveniente da oxida??o, esta efici?ncia est? diretamente relacionada com a concentra??o dos catalisadores, sendo o material de niobato de s?dio o que apresentou maior efici?ncia, devido as suas propriedades texturais, ?pticas, sendo este um material promissor no ramo da fotocat?lise. Para os sistemas de imobiliza??o (coating), verificou-se que o revestimento ideal ? obtido com tr?s imobiliza??es, estes materiais foram analisados na oxida??o de metanol e na inativa??o de microrganismo Escherichia Coli. Estes sistemas (coating) mostram uma boa atividade na oxida??o de metanol, apesar de apresentar resultados inferiores quando comparados aos materiais em suspens?o de ?xido de ni?bio, por?m a grande vantagem dos sistemas imobilizados em rela??o ao de suspens?es s?o a sua reutiliza??o. Em rela??o ? inativa??o da Escherichia Coli, foi verificado que os sistemas imobilizados n?o s?o muitos ativos e que o microrganismo ? bastante dependendo do meio em que se encontra. / One of the materials that is currently highlighted are the compounds of
niobium, because they have features like acidity, oxidative and photocatalytic
properties and for being one of the most abundant metals in the country, Brazil
is the world's largest producer. In this scenario, the work has to evaluate the
efficiency of heterogeneous photocatalysis niobium materials in the oxidation of
methanol and the inactivation of Escherichia coli using immobilization systems
?coating? and suspension. Commercial niobium oxide (Nb2O5) was evaluated in
suspension and immobilization in different systems (tubes and rings) for
photocatalytic processes for water treatment (methanol oxidation and
inactivation of Escherichia coli). From the results of the commercial Nb2O5
characterizations was observed the presence of an amorphous structure with
heat thermal treatment at temperatures above 550 ?C becomes crystalline
phases, however, this fact produce a significant aggregation of the particles
which reduced the specific area and the photocatalytic activity. The not
calcined Nb2O5 material showed a higher activity, for both oxidation of methanol
as for the inactivation of bacterial tests, the latter being very sensitive to the
chemical composition water. Immobilization of the photocatalyst reactor walls
prevents the need for removal of Nb2O5 particles after treatment, but
significantly reduction its activity. In contrast, immobilization in a fixed-bed
(rings) led to a moderate reduction in activity, which is counteracted by
improvement in the long-term stability of the material. Niobium catalysts were
synthesized using a refluxing method with and without the use of NaOH in
different conditions of synthesis and characterized by different techniques in
order to verify the phase formation of niobium. From the results of X-ray
diffraction for the synthesized materials were recorded forming of species
niobium oxide and sodium niobates depending on the adopted synthesis
methodology. The catalytic activity of these materials was evaluated in the
oxidation of methanol in relation to the amount of catalyst in which the activities
have different behaviors have been dependent on the structure, surface and
morphological parameters. Materials with sodium niobate structure have a lineal
tendency of activity in relation to the mass of catalysts, while the materials
niobium oxide structure have an abrupt loss of their catalytic activity at higher
catalyst concentrations, indicating that the dispersion of the light is higher in
these catalysts as increases the amount of particles in suspension. Among the
materials synthesized and analyzed in the oxidation of methanol, which was
more efficient, was the material of sodium niobate NaNbO3 to their textural
properties, optical, which is a promising material for photocatalysis.

A investiga??o procurou responder ? seguinte quest?o: Como vem se estabelecendo a rela??o entre arquitetura e artes visuais no Instituto Inhotim? A partir do problema apresentado, outras quest?es foram elaboradas para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa: Em que medida as caracter?sticas formais das obras de artes visuais conduziram o processo de concep??o dos projetos dos pavilh?es de car?ter permanente do Instituto Inhotim? Os espa?os expositivos do Instituto Inhotim apresentam caracter?sticas que os diferenciam de projetos de arquitetura museol?gica elaborados para outras institui??es? Que aspectos lhes s?o espec?ficos? O estudo busca, a partir da an?lise dos pavilh?es expositivos daquela institui??o, relacionar as caracter?sticas morfol?gicas, funcionais e materiais das edifica??es com as obras de arte contempor?nea (de car?ter permanente) e o di?logo entre arquiteto e artista durante o processo projetual. Para tanto, foi feita a an?lise dos pavilh?es permanentes ? luz do discurso dos arquitetos e artistas envolvidos no processo projetual. Pretendeu-se, com este estudo, trazer uma contribui??o acerca da produ??o da arquitetura contempor?nea brasileira, abrindo, assim, novos caminhos para estudiosos interessados no campo de projeto de arquitetura de museus e espa?os expositivos, tendo como enfoque as rela??es entre arte e arquitetura. As conclus?es da pesquisa indicam que, no panorama dos espa?os projetados para a arte no Brasil, o Inhotim se apresenta como um caso ?nico. O Inhotim se configura a partir de uma expografia que inclui o acervo exibido em parte ?ao ar livre? (esculturas, por exemplo) entre a vegeta??o do parque e outras obras (como instala??es e pinturas) s?o abrigadas em edifica??es projetadas atrav?s de parcerias entres arquitetos e artistas. Nesta perspectiva, a arte contempor?nea, que agrupa uma gama de processos art?sticos, encontra neste museu, um campo aberto para concretiza??o das mais diversas proposi??es nesse universo de cria??o. A parceria entre arquiteto e artista conduz ? produ??o de um projeto ?nico de arquitetura que objetiva a prote??o e exibi??o do acervo, em especial de instala??es. / The thesis presented here studies the relationship between architecture and art, taking as a case study the exhibition pavilions of the Inhotim Institute, located in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais. The research sought to answer the question: How has been establishing the relationship between architecture and visual arts in Inhotim Institute? From the presented problem, other issues have been prepared for the development of the research: To what extent the formal characteristics of the visual arts works led the design process for projects of permanent pavilions of the Inhotim Institute? The exhibition spaces of the Instituto Inhotim have characteristics that differentiate them of museum architecture projects designed to other institutions? What aspects are specific to them? The study aims, based on an analysis of exhibition pavilions institution, links the materials, morphological and functional characteristics of the buildings to the works of permanent contemporary art and the dialogue between architect and artist during the design process. Therefore, it was made the analysis of the architectural design of the permanent pavilions to the view of the architects and artists involved in the design process. This study intended to make a contribution on the Brazilian contemporary architecture production, thereby opening new ways for researches interested in museums architecture design field and exhibition spaces, with the focus on the relationship between art and architecture. The research's conclusions point that the panorama of spaces designed for art in Brazil, we can say that the Inhotim is presented as a single case. Inhotim is shaped from a expography in which part of the collection is exhibited "outdoors" (sculptures, for example) on the green areas of the park and other works (such as installations and paintings) are housed in designed buildings by partnerships between architects and artists. In this perspective, contemporary art, which brings together a range of artistic processes, finds in Inhotim, an open field for implementation of various proposals in this creative universe. In the case of design project of the pavilions for permanent exhibition, other aspects are valued, in addition to the morphological characteristics of works of art, for example, the themes and materials used by artists in their works. Finally, we can say that in Inhotim, and more directly referring to the museum architectural complex in constitution, specific architecture that has been produced to house works of contemporary art, it?s unprecedented in the museum-park art knowledge. The partnership between architect and artist leads to the production of a single architecture project that aims to protect and display the collection in special installations works.

O intuito foi pensar dan?a e literatura como ?reas poss?veis de se conectarem e despertarem no adolescente seu potencial criativo, capaz de perceber os v?rios n?veis de rela??es que se estabelecem a sua volta, de interagir com o outro de maneira mais madura, atentando para a import?ncia de se fazer ativo e consciente na din?mica de nossa sociedade. / This research proposes a reflection on the contribution of dance and literature in the educational context. For this purpose, it dialogues the strand of contemporary dance with elements of the poetic text, emphasizing the figures of speech. It brings as theoretical support the Reception Method, developed by Vera Teixeira de Aguiar and Maria da Gl?ria Bordini (1993), from the Reception Aesthetics, proposal by Hans Robert Jauss (2002). The survey counted on a practical application performed with high school students from a public school school, located in Natal/RN. The data was collected with questionnaires, Logbooks and a photographic record and video. The aim was to think dance and literature as possible areas to connect and awaken adolescents in their creative potential, being able to perceive the various levels of relationships that are established around them, to interact with each other in a more mature way, paying attention to the importance of making them active and conscious in the dynamics of our society.

Previous issue date: 2017-04-10 / O aumento gradativo do uso de biodiesel na matriz energ?tica brasileira, como combust?vel em misturas biodiesel/diesel, tem incentivado a pesquisa por m?todos mais eficazes de obten??o e controle dos processos oxidativos deste biocombust?vel, buscando maior qualidade do produto. Neste trabalho, foram sintetizados biodiesel de oleaginosas do algod?o e da soja, e antioxidantes naturais (Passiflora edullis, Punica granatum, Syzygium aromaticum, respectivamente, maracuj?, rom? e cravo). O biodiesel proveniente da Refinaria Potiguar Clara Clamar?o, RPCC, foi utilizado para compara??o. A s?ntese dos biodiesel deste trabalho, ocorreu por cat?lise homog?nea, com KOH e, cat?lise heterog?nea, com catalisadores baseados em s?licas impregnadas por metais s?dio e pot?ssio, denominados CAT1 e CAT2. Os biodiesel produzidos foram utilizados em misturas combust?veis biodiesel/diesel, na propor??o volum?trica de 10% e 15%. As propriedades f?sico-qu?micas dos combust?veis produzidos, tais como, viscosidade e densidade (ASTM D7042), ponto de fulgor (ASTM D93), ponto de n?voa (ASTM D2500), ponto de fluidez (ASTM D97) e ponto de entupimento (ASTM D6371) foram determinadas segundo as normas da American Society for Testing and Materials ? ASTM, de acordo com as especifica??es definidas pela Ag?ncia Nacional de Petr?leo, G?s Natural e Biocombust?vel ? ANP. Os antioxidantes obtidos, atrav?s de extra??o alco?lica com octanol, foram caracterizados por espectroscopia na regi?o do infravermelho com transformada de Fourier (FTIR). Os espectros de FTIR apresentaram bandas em torno de 3000 cm-1 referentes ? deforma??o axial C-H de arom?ticos, 1601 cm-1 e 1460 cm-1 atribu?das ? deforma??o axial de C=C do anel arom?tico, que s?o t?picas de compostos fen?licos que comp?e os principais antioxidantes. O m?todo Rancimat foi utilizado para determinar o Per?odo de Indu??o (PI), do biodiesel de soja e o de algod?o com os antioxidantes naturais. O antioxidante obtido da esp?cie Passiflora edullis (maracuj?) apresentou PI de 5,23 h e 3,68 h, respectivamente, para o biodiesel de soja e algod?o. Os catalisadores produzidos neste trabalho foram caracterizados por difra??o de raios X (DRX), espectrometria de fluoresc?ncia de raios X (FRX) e FTIR. O CAT 1, apresentou tempo reacional de 30 min e rendimento de 85% para o biodiesel de soja produzido. O catalisador CAT2, produziu o biodiesel de soja em maior tempo reacional e rendimento de 75%, por?m apresentou elevada capacidade de reutiliza??o. Os antioxidantes naturais apresentaram atividade no biodiesel similar aos sint?ticos, contribuindo com metodologia de f?cil execu??o e menor custo. As misturas antioxidante/biodiesel/diesel permaneceram dentro dos limites de especifica??o exigidos pela ANP para comercializa??o do combust?vel. / The gradual increase in the use of biodiesel in the Brazilian energy matrix, as a fuel in biodiesel/diesel blends, has encouraged the search for more effective methods to obtaining and controlling the oxidative processo of this biofuel, looking for higher product quality. In this work we were synthesized biodiesel from cotton and soybean oil, and natural antioxidants (Passiflora edulis, Punica granatum, Syzygium aromaticum, respectively, passion fruit, pomegranate and clove). The biodiesel from the Potiguar Clara Clamar?o Refinery, RPCC, was used for comparison. The biodiesel synthesis occurred by homogeneous catalysis, with KOH, and heterogeneous catalysis, with catalysts based on silica impregnated with sodium and potassium metals, called CAT1 and CAT2. The produced biodiesel was used in biodiesel/diesel blends, in the volumetric proportion of 10% and 15%. The physicochemical properties of the produced fuels, such as kinematic viscosity and specific mass (ASTM D7042), flash point (ASTM D93), cloud point (ASTM D2500), pour point (ASTM D97) and cold filter plugging point (ASTM D6371) were determined following the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards, according to the specifications defined by the Nacional Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP). The antioxidants obtained through alcoholic extraction with octanol were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The FTIR spectra presented bands around 3000 cm-1 relative to C-H deformation of aromatic, 1601 cm-1 and 1460 cm-1 attributed to the axial deformation of C=C in the aromatic ring, which are typical from phenolic compounds that composes the antioxidants. The Rancimat method was used to determine the Induction Period (IP), of the biodiesel with the antioxidants. The antioxidant obtained from Passiflora edulis (passion fruit) showed IP of 5.23 h and 3.68 h for soybean and cotton biodiesel, respectively. The produced catalysts in this work were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and FTIR. CAT 1 presented a reaction time of 30 min and yield of 85% for the produced soybean biodiesel. The catalytic converter CAT2, produced the soybean biodiesel in a longer reaction time and yield of 75% but presented a higher reused capacity. The natural antioxidants presented activity in the biodiesel similar to the synthetic ones, contributing with an easy execution and low cost methodology. The antioxidant/biodiesel/diesel blends remained within the specification limits required by the ANP for fuel commercialization.

Suas composi??es foram, inicialmente, criadas a partir de uma busca por um repert?rio acess?vel dentro do desenvolvimento t?cnico dos alunos de in?meros instrumentos. Como maestro e professor, sendo um dos fundadores da Escola de M?sica de Piracicaba / SP4, atual cidade onde reside, inseriu em suas obras os elementos da m?sica folcl?rica brasileira, em paralelo ?s influ?ncias composicionais de Bart?k, que tamb?m se utilizava de caracter?sticas folcl?ricas em suas obras. No per?odo entre 1955 a 1980, Mahle comp?s Sonatas e Sonatinas para violino, das quais este Artigo apresenta a Sonata 1980 em uma abordagem interpretativa, visando a constru??o de uma performance, atrav?s de reflex?es sobre a m?sica contempor?nea e m?sica contempor?nea brasileira. His compositions were initially created from the search for an accessible repertoire within the technical development of the students of numerous instruments. As a teacher and conductor, being one of the founders of the School of Music of Piracicaba / SP5, the present city where he reside, include in his works the elements of brazilian folk music, in parallel with the compositional influences of Bart?k, who also use folkloric characteristics in your works. In the period between 1955 and 1980, Mahle composed Sonatas and Sonatinas for violin, of which this article presents the Sonata 1980 in an interpretative approach to construction of a performance, through reflections on contemporary music and contemporary brazilian music. From the contextualisation of the current music, it begins an approach on the construction of the performance and as stages of the execution in the technical, aesthetic and philosophical concepts, as well as a reflection on the practice of the interpretation. The biographical experience with the composer and shared through reports, post-interviews, resulting in a visit to his residence in the city of Piracicaba / SP on November 8, 2015. A maturation of this research development resulted in a performance construction, between technical and interpretative suggestions for a good performance, assisting a reflection on an appreciation of the contemporary repertoire of brazilian violin pieces not yet covered in recitals and concert halls.

L'éphèbe troyen ad astra / eis toùs astéras : étude iconologique et contextuelle de la mosaïque de Ganymède de la Maison de Dionysos à Néa Paphos (Chypre)Guay, Jean-François 02 February 2024 (has links)
Ce mémoire de maîtrise vise à comprendre le symbolisme de la mosaïque de Ganymède de la Maison de Dionysos à Néa Paphos (Chypre) datée de la fin du IIe ou du début du IIIe siècle p.C. et à préciser le contexte d’utilisation de la salle. Ce double questionnement découle de l’observation des motifs géométriques associés à la scène qui représente l’enlèvement de l’éphèbe troyen par un aigle. D’une part, la nature du « fleuron », associé au panneau figuratif, est analysée à l’aide de documents iconographiques et de textes anciens. Les résultats de cette analyse permettent de discuter du sens symbolique, idéologique ou philosophico-religieux que ces motifs confèreraient à la scène. D’autre part, la disposition des « fleurons » et des autres motifs géométriques suggère que la salle aurait pu être utilisée dans un contexte précis. Outre ces indices décoratifs, la fonction de la salle est aussi discutée selon les données architecturales et planimétriques. Certaines conclusions sur le symbolisme, qui découlent de l’étude de la mosaïque de Ganymède, sont ensuite confrontées à certains pavements figurés de la domus. / This masters essay aims to understand the symbolism of the Ganymede mosaic of the House of Dionysus in Nea Paphos (Cyprus) dated to the end of the 2nd or the beginning of the 3rd century AD and to determine the room’s use. This double inquiry arises from the observation of the geometric details associated with the scene representing the rapt of the Trojan ephebe by an eagle. Firstly, the nature of the "rosette" associated with the figurative panel is analyzed with the iconographic documents and the ancient texts. The results of this analysis allow us to discuss the symbolic, ideological or philosophical-religious meaning that motifs would confer on the scene. Secondly, the arrangement of the "rosette" and other geometric patterns suggests that the room could have been used in a specific context. In addition to these decorative clues, the function of the room is also discussed according to architectural and planimetric data. Some conclusions about the symbolism that emerge from the study of the mosaic of Ganymede are then confronted with certain figured pavements found in the domus.

Initial guess and optimization strategies for multi-body space trajectories with application to free return trajectories to near-Earth asteroidsBradley, Nicholas Ethan 23 October 2014 (has links)
This concept of calculating, optimizing, and utilizing a trajectory known as a ``Free Return Trajectory" to facilitate spacecraft rendezvous with Near-Earth Asteroids is presented in this dissertation. A Free Return Trajectory may be defined as a trajectory that begins and ends near the same point, relative to some central body, without performing any deterministic velocity maneuvers (i.e., no maneuvers are planned in a theoretical sense for the nominal mission to proceed). Free Return Trajectories have been utilized previously for other purposes in astrodynamics, but they have not been previously applied to the problem of Near-Earth Asteroid rendezvous. Presented here is a series of descriptions, algorithms, and results related to trajectory initial guess calculation and optimal trajectory convergence. First, Earth-centered Free Return Trajectories are described in a general manner, and these trajectories are classified into several families based on common characteristics. Next, these trajectories are used to automatically generate initial conditions in the three-body problem for the purpose of Near-Earth Asteroid rendezvous. For several bodies of interest, example initial conditions are automatically generated, and are subsequently converged, resulting in feasible, locally-optimal, round-trip trajectories to Near-Earth Asteroids utilizing Free Return Trajectories. Subsequently, a study is performed on using an unpowered flyby of the Moon to lower the overall DV cost for a nominal round-trip voyage to a Near-Earth Asteroid. Using the Moon is shown to appreciably decrease the overall mission cost. In creating the formulation and algorithms for the Lunar flyby problem, an initial guess routine for generic planetary and lunar flyby tours was developed. This continuation algorithm is presented next, and details a novel process by which ballistic trajectories in a simplistic two-body force model may be iteratively converged in progressively more realistic dynamical models until a final converged ballistic trajectory is found in a full-ephemeris, full-dynamics model. This procedure is useful for constructing interplanetary transfers and moon tours in a realistic dynamical framework; an interplanetary and an inter-moon example are both shown. To summarize, the material in this dissertation consists of: novel algorithms to compute Free Return Trajectories, and application of the concept to Near-Earth Asteroid rendezvous; demonstration of cost-savings by using a Lunar flyby; and a novel routine to transfer trajectories from a simplistic model to a more realistic dynamical representation. / text
