Surveillance And Control In The Age Of Information: A Critical Analysis Of The Technology-power Relationship

This study deals with the notions and practices of surveillance and control in the current society. By this means, it aims to discuss the relation between technology and power on basis of surveillance technologies witnessed in all domains of life. With the extensive use of new technologies as camera monitoring, biometrics, and smart cards, power holders get the opportunity and tools to monitor all actions and data of individuals. How this is achieved and for what purposes and the ideology behind the surveillance practices are the main issues of this study. In accordance with this goal, the use of surveillance technologies as a tool of power to provide rationalization in which everything is visible, predictable, and controllable, to maintain social control, and to ensure the domination of power over the society is discussed through examining the applications of surveillance in Turkey and in other countries. Besides, the becoming of surveillance and control as natural and usual aspects of the current society in the eyes of people and their becoming a culture are also pointed out and analyzed in order to comprehend the location of these notions in everyday life. All these issues are discussed critically in order to analyze the role and ideological function of surveillance, in particular, and the relation of technology with power, in general.

Η παρούσα εργασία διερεύνησε τις αντιλήψεις εκπαιδευτικών του Δημοτικού αναφορικά με τη διδακτική αξιοποίηση των νέων τεχνολογιών στη διδασκαλία του μαθήματος της Ιστορίας. Στόχοι της έρευνας αποτέλεσαν η ανάδειξη των αντιλήψεων που έχουν σχηματίσει οι εκπαιδευτικοί του Δημοτικού σχετικά με τη χρήση των ηλεκτρονικών υπολογιστών στη διδασκαλία του μαθήματος της ιστορίας και η επισήμανση ή μη της ανάγκης για επιμόρφωση τους αναφορικά με την αξιοποίηση των νέων τεχνολογιών στη διδασκαλία της Ιστορίας. Η έρευνα διεξήχθη κατά το σχολικό έτος 2013-2014 με δώδεκα εκπαιδευτικούς του Δημοτικού ηλικίας 22- 54 χρονών οι οποίοι κατά το τρέχον σχολικό έτος εργάζονται σε σχολεία της Πάτρας και της Ναυπάκτου. Οι εκπαιδευτικοί προέρχονται τόσο από τη δημόσια όσο και από την ιδιωτική εκπαίδευση. Συγκεντρώθηκαν τα ποιοτικά δεδομένα από τις 12 ημι-δομημένες συνεντεύξεις οι οποίες αποσκοπούσαν στη διερεύνηση των απόψεων των εκπαιδευτικών σχετικά με τη διδασκαλία του μαθήματος της Ιστορίας με τη χρήση των νέων τεχνολογιών: δόθηκε έμφαση στη γνώμη τους για τα οφέλη από τη διδακτική αξιοποίηση των νέων τεχνολογιών στο μάθημα της ιστορίας τόσο για τον μαθητή όσο και για τον ίδιο τον εκπαιδευτικό, τους παράγοντες που δυσχεραίνουν την προσπάθειά τους για ενσωμάτωση των νέων τεχνολογιών στη διδακτική διαδικασία, τα συναισθήματα που τους δημιουργεί η διαδικασία ενσωμάτωσης των νέων τεχνολογιών, την άποψη τους για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο μπορούν να αξιοποιήσουν διδακτικά τις νέες τεχνολογίες καθώς και για την ανάγκη ή μη επιμόρφωσης σε θέματα σχετικά με τη διδασκαλία με τις νέες τεχνολογίες. Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι οι εκπαιδευτικοί διάκεινται θετικά απέναντι στην προσπάθεια ενσωμάτωσης των ΤΠΕ στη διδασκαλία του μαθήματος της ιστορίας ενώ ακόμη και με τους στοιχειώδεις τρόπους με τους οποίους επιχειρούν την ένταξη αυτή φανερώνεται η διάθεσή τους για αλλαγή από τον παραδοσιακό τρόπο διδασκαλίας του συγκεκριμένου μαθήματος. Ακόμη επισημάνθηκε από όλους η ανάγκη για επιμόρφωση σε θέματα σχετικά με τη διδακτική αξιοποίηση των νέων τεχνολογιών στη διδασκαλία του μαθήματος της ιστορίας ενώ έγιναν και προτάσεις προς τους εκπονητές των Αναλυτικών Προγραμμάτων για περαιτέρω διευκόλυνση τους στο διδακτικό τους έργο. / The present work investigates the primary teachers’ understanding in respect of teaching applications of new technologies during the teaching of History subject. The emergence of the perceptions, that primary teachers have adopted, has been the research objective, taking into consideration the use of computers during the teaching of History and labelling or the lack of necessity for teacher training regarding the use of new technologies in the teaching of history. The survey was conducted during the 2013-2014 school year with twelve primary teachers aged 22 to 54 years old who were working, during the current school year in schools of Patras and Nafpaktos. The teachers belonged to both public and the private schools’ faculty. Qualitative data was collected from 12 semi-structured interviews, which were designed to explore the views of teachers on the teaching of history with the use of new technologies and to focus on their opinion about what would be the benefits of teaching applications with new technologies in the course of history for both the student and the teacher himself, what are the factors that hinder their efforts to integrate new technologies in the teaching process, the feelings that are created by the process of integrating new technologies into the course of history, their view on how they can make the most out of teaching with new technologies the course of history and the need of training on issues related to teaching with new technologies or not. The results showed that the teachers were positively disposed towards the effort to integrate the technologies of information and communication in the teaching of history while even with the basic ways with which they attempt to integrate this, their mood for a change and an abruption of the traditional way of teaching this course is evident. Furthermore it was noted by everyone the need for training on issues related to the use of new teaching technologies in teaching of history while there were proposals to the elaborated curricula for further facilitate their teaching work.

Toward an Understanding of "Weak Signals" of Technological Change and Innovation in the Internet Industry

Identifying the emergence and development of new technologies has become an essential ability for firms competing in dynamic environments. Nonetheless, current technology intelligence practices are unstructured and vaguely defined. Moreover, the existing literature in future technology studies lacks strong, systematic explanations of what technologies are, where technologies come from, and how new technologies emerge and evolve. The present study builds on Structuration Theory, and proposes the structurational model of emerging technologies (SMET). The SMET suggests not only an ongoing view of technologies as social objects, but also a process for thinking through scientifically the complex, multidimensional and emergent dynamic of social and technological change. The SMET proposes that the emergence and development of a new technology can be tracked by examining systematically and collectively the extent of development of its technology-related social structure – its degree of structuration. The degree of structuration of a technology is an ongoing process instantiated in social practices, and can be observed through visible patterns or specific social outcomes of systemic activity organized in three analytical dimensions: structures of meaning, power, and legitimacy. The SMET assumes that the conceptual initiation of a new technology triggers new patterns of social activity or a signal of technological change; thus, the variation in the slope or trajectory of the degree of structuration of a technology may indicate an early signal of technological change. The SMET sets a foundation for identifying early signals of technological change when it is used on a systematic basis. Empirically, the study conducted an exploratory case study in the Internet industry. The study employed a sequential transformative mixed method procedure, and relied on 77 Internet experts to create retrospectively a systematic and collective interpretation of the Internet industry in the last ten (10) years. The test of hypotheses was based on only seven (7) Internet technologies due to time and instrumental constraints. The results confirm the fundamental relationships among constructs in the model, and support, thus, the SMET. The degree of structuration of a technology is revealed as a process independent of individuals’ participation in the enactment of a technology. Technological outcomes are explained by the extent of development of structures of meaning, power, and legitimacy (i.e., the degree of structuration of a technology). Moreover, influential technological outcomes shape individuals’ perspectives over time – i.e., the structurational effect. Hence, the study not only provides evidence that supports this novel theoretical framework, but also illustrates methodologically how to identify the emergence and development of new technologies. Likewise, the study discusses the implications of these results for technology management practices (e.g., product and technology development, innovation policies, and technology transfer activities). Lastly, the study recognizes limitations and suggests further research avenues.

The survival and the development of the enterprises mainly depend on the following fact: how much competitive the enterprises are and would be in a pressing environment where the risk for adopting new technologies and innovations is crusial and necessary for the stability and the future of the enterprises. Consequently, this master concerns on the analysis of all the factors that contributed in the formation of competitiveness in Europe and in Greece. In addition, it also concerns on how the new technologies/innovations influence and form a strong competitive achievement.

Nové technologie v obchodě / New technology in the Trade

The aim of this thesis was to evaluate current approaches in the field of modern tools and technologies used in business. A secondary aim was to assess the level of their representation in practice and on the basis of their occurrence to gather recommendations with regard to their implementation in Czech companies. In the theoretical part, I outlined the importance of technological advances and modern technologies and emphasize their impact on the future of the company. Attention was focused on the creation, resource opportunities and allocation towards innovation and also on ways to support and fund them. The new generation technologies have also been mentioned and at the end of this work, I paid attention to modern approaches in the retail business. In the practical section I conducted research in five retail chain stores in the UK, Germany and the Czech Republic. Using statistical diagnostic methods I evaluated the resulting primary data revealing the extent of using modern technologies in the five monitored businesses. These methods then further helped me to classify the tracked subjects by success levels to reveal the ideal 'fictitious' company. The results of the case studies were general design guideline for action and the basis for the second part of the research. Like the analysed group of subjects, I conducted research at the retail chain Kaufland Czech Republic v.o.s.. I compared results of the research with values of the 'fictitious' company and from the resulting differences I have derived practical suggestions to improve each area. Key proposals that have been established through this study include: presentation of the subject in social networks, the introduction of online sales with the possibility to pick up goods at the store, installation of self-service checkouts, the use of NFC tags and electronic shelf price tags and increasing attractiveness of in-store communication by the use of interactive eye-catching displays and information channels. In conclusion the main points of the proposed solution would bring subject Kaufland cost savings and physical employee labor savings while improving awareness of the company in the eyes of target customers.

Através de um estudo comparativo entre a obra História Geral do Brasil antes da sua separação e independência de Portugal, escrita por Francisco Adolfo Varnhagen, entre 1854-7, e livros didáticos recomendados pelo MEC em 2006, a primeira parte dessa dis-sertação procura mostrar como esse modelo narrativo do século XIX permanece de maneira hegemônica, ubíqua e pouco problematizada nos livros didáticos contemporâneos. Na segun-da parte, através de discussões teóricas, de propostas práticas de ensino e de intervenções com linguagens multimidiáticas, tenta-se mostrar que apesar de praticamente única nos livros didá-ticos, a estrutura narrativa oitocentista é apenas uma das maneiras de representar o passado nacional. / Salvador

Na primeira parte são... / The technical-scientific development in recent years has favored a revolution both on cartography science and on social interaction with the emergence of multiple cartography features. The intensive use of informatics by Cartography has allowed an interaction of cartography forms with different multimedia resources, such as texts, graphics, sound, videos and animation that make them more dynamic and interactive. Those new ways of representation and communication of spatial information have been named Multimedia Cartography. School cartography, i.e. the one studied, learned and produced in the scope of regular education, has had to live along with a multimedia cartography education that is produced and spread out of the school walls. We understand that reading Multimedia Cartography from the Cartography for children and scholars can reveal more humanistic and ordered aspects of these relations, as for example, the idea that linearity and hierarchy that dominate printed maps happen under multiple connections and interpretations when produced in flowing networks (less fixed) of spatial representations. This way, our research has a qualitative approach working with a theoretical-methodological referential in Geography. It aims at analyzing in which aspects interactivity allowed by cartography multimedia projects can lead to other readings about the space that is represented by cartography forms supported by discrete available media. Esta dissertação traz para foco de análise a práxis pedagógica de docentes dos cursos técnicos e tecnológicos frente às influências das inovações tecnológicas com base na microeletrônica e nas demandas do mundo do trabalho. Buscou-se com esse tema superar a dicotomia entre teoria e prática num movimento de investigação na entidade educativa e produtiva, fazendo a análise à luz dessas demandas. Houve uma tentativa de transgredir o preconceito sobre a influência da economia na educação. Entretanto, a autora procura não se ausentar das análises e reflexões críticas, extraindo as contribuições desses fenômenos tecnológicos para a educação, tendo o cuidado de não transcrevê-las e, sim, interpretá-las. A opção metodológica feita pela autora permitiu analisar as influências das tecnologias no mundo do trabalho e suas requisições nos perfis profissionais e nos empregos decorrentes. Possibilitou analisar a práxis de docentes desses cursos e a relação tríade entre epistemologia, axiologia e metodologia, através de estudo de caso na instituição SENAI-BA. A autora faz uma breve análise, também, das tendências e das mudanças tecnológicas no mundo de trabalho, num país industrial e desenvolvido - Alemanha, buscando comparar os requerimentos e as soluções adotadas pelo país eleito. Dessa forma, esse estudo contribui para fortalecer uma visão de sistemas integrados entre teoria e prática. Nessa perspectiva, a autora considera que os fenômenos abordados estão conectados numa relação de interdependência entre áreas do conhecimentos e profissionais, suscitando, portanto, uma práxis docente na direção de produção de conhecimento com autonomia e criatividade na formação de um sujeito cognoscente e ético. / This dissertation brings to focus of analysis the pedagogical praxis of teachers of technical and technological courses in front of influences of technologicals innovations with base in the microelectronic and on the demands of the works world. We tried with this theme to superate the dichotomy between the theory and the practice in a investigation movement in the educative and productive institution making the analysis to light of these demands. There was a tentative of breaking the preconception about the influence of economy in education. However the author tries to not absent the analysis and critical reflexions taking out the contributions of these technologicals phenomenons for education caring to not transcribing them, and yes, interpreting them. The author methodological option allowed analyzing the technologies influences in the works' world and its requisitions on the professionals' profiles and on the decurrently jobs. Allow analyze the praxis of teachers these courses and the triad relation between epistemology, axiology and methodology through the case's study in SENAI-BA Institution. The author also does a brief analysis in the tendencies and in the technological changings in the work's world in an Industrial and developed country Germany, trying to compare the requirements and the adopted solutions by the elected country. In this way this study contributed to strength a vision of integrated systems between theory and practice. In this perspective the author considered that the approached phenomenons are connected in a relation of interdependence between areas of knowledge and professional suscitating therefore a teaching praxis in the direction of knowledge production with autonomy and creativity on the cognoscente and ethical subject formation.

Percepção e desafios do educador frente às mídias: um estudo de caso na Escola Estadual Heitor Villa Lobos: Salvador/BA

O presente trabalho trata de uma pesquisa, estudo de caso, realizada na Escola Estadual Heitor Villa Lobos, localizada na rua Theodulo Albuquerque Cabula VI, Salvador-BA. A referida escola situa-se numa área remanescente de quilombos o que nos privilegia em termos educacionais. O objetivo do trabalho foi verificar a percepção dos professores frente às novas mídias, identificar quais os recursos disponíveis na escola e qual a periodicidade de uso dos mesmos, além de um breve relato a partir de observação participante. O mundo moderno traz consigo a necessidade de atualização constante nas formas de aprender e ensinar. As novas mídias são exemplos de como as transformações na era contemporânea têm acontecido cada vez mais velozes, trazendo inúmeros benefícios ao campo educacional, bem como exigindo do docente o desenvolvimento de novas habilidades para o uso dos novos recursos de informação/comunicação disponíveis. Assim, este trabalho buscou entender a influência das novas tecnologias como fonte de recursos para o processo de ensino-aprendizagem. Entre outros aspectos, os resultados da pesquisa apontam que os educadores ainda são resistentes aos novos modelos educacionais, sendo a falta de conhecimento e indisponibilidade das novas mídias nas escolas os principais fatores para que estes profissionais não se enquadrem no novo modelo do processo de ensino-aprendizagem. Foi verificado que a maioria dos professores têm mais de 10 anos de formação e não foram preparados para esta nova sociedade da tecnologia. Pelos resultados apresentados observamos que dentre a mídias disponíveis e utilizadas na escola, destacam-se: Computador, internet, CD-Rom, DVD, Pen-drives, TV-pendrive e som, sendo a internet a tecnologia que ocupa maior destaque em termos de importância e utilização para pesquisas e desenvolvimento das práticas pedagógicas. / The present work relates to a search, case study carried out at the high school Heitor Villa Lobos, located at Rua Theodulo Albuquerque Cabula VI, Salvador-BA. The referred school is within Quilombos remaining area which privileges us with educational issues. The objective of this work is to verify the perception of teachers through new medias, identify the available resources at the school and the use periodicity of same and a prompt report of participant observation. The modern world brings with itself the need of constant updates in the manners of learning and teaching. The new medias are examples of how fast changes have been occurring in the contemporaneous era, bringing dozens of benefits to the educational area, as well as demanding from the teacher development of skills for use of new and available information and communications resources. This work aimed to understand the influence of new technologies as source of resources for the teaching-learning process. Among other aspects, the results of search indicate that educators are still reluctant to the new educational methods, being lack of knowledge and unavailability of new medias at schools the main factors for these professionals do not fit the new model of teaching-learning process. It was verified that the majority of teachers have more than 10 years of formation and were not prepared for this new society of technology. By the results presented, we noticed that among the available medias utilized at schools, Computer, internet, CD-Rom, DVD, Pen-drives, TV-pendrive are featured, being internet the technology in feature on what relates to the importance and utilization for searches and development pedagogic practices.
