The wild animal's story : nonhuman protagonists in twentieth-century Canadian literature through the lens of practical zoocriticism

Allmark-Kent, Candice January 2015 (has links)
Despite the characteristic cross-disciplinarity of animal studies, interactions between literary and scientific researchers have been negligible. In response, this project develops a framework of practical zoocriticism, an interdisciplinary lens which synthesizes methodologies from science, animal advocacy, and literature. A primary focus of this model is the complex relationship between literary representations of animals, scientific studies of animal cognition, and practical and theoretical work advocating animal protection. This thesis proposes that the Canadian wild animal stories of Ernest Thompson Seton and Charles G.D. Roberts operate at an intersection of these three factors. Their potential for facilitating reciprocal communication has not been recognized, however, due to their damaged representation within Canadian literature as a consequence of the Nature Fakers controversy. By re-contextualizing and re-evaluating these texts this project illuminates the unique contributions made by these authors. It also offers new evidence of the intersecting discourses and ideologies that stimulated the controversy. Re-defining the genre has enabled this project to uncover a selection of twentieth-century Canadian texts that perpetuate its core aims and characteristics. This project suggests that after the Nature Fakers controversy, the wild animal story diverged into two new forms: ‘realistic’ and ‘speculative.’ By placing the wild animal story in relation to a broader canon of Canadian literature, this thesis identifies three distinct modes of animal representation. These methods of relating to literary animals in the Canadian context are the fantasy of knowing the animal, the failure of knowing the animal, and the acceptance of not-knowing the animal. This novel characterization of Canadian literature is a product of the diverse, interdisciplinary approaches offered by the practical zoocriticism framework.

"Tavla, tavla på väggen där..." : En posthumanistisk studie om en whiteboardtavla i förskolan / "Whiteboard, whiteboard on the wall.." : A post-humanistic study of a whiteboard in a pre-school

Boksjö, Olga January 2015 (has links)

The Role of the Ecological Other in Contesting Postcolonial Identity Politics : an Interdisciplinary Study of the Postcolonial Eco-literature of J.M Coetzee and Wu Ming-yi / L’autre écologique : une contestation de la politique de l’identité postcoloniale : une étude interdisciplinaire de la littérature écologique postcoloniale de J.M Coetzee et Wu Ming-yi

Chang, Ti-Han 18 June 2018 (has links)
This thesis presents the literary works of two contemporary writers—John Maxwell Coetzee (1940-), originally from South Africa, and Wu Ming-yi (1971-) from Taiwan—whom it analyses as key exponents of postcolonial eco-literature. The thesis offers an interdisciplinary study of their works in their theoretical, political and literary aspects. The texts selected for analysis are those that seek to present a dystopian image of the exploited natural environment or nonhuman entities, while, at the same time, associating and articulating these representations with the suppressions and exploitations carried out within colonial frameworks in different parts of the world. As regards the theoretical perspective of the thesis, it addresses the subject of how contemporary continental philosophy takes nonhuman animals and other kinds of ecological beings into account and rethinks the philosophical question of the other. With respect to politics, it contextualises this philosophical questioning by looking at the history of various postcolonial countries, notably South Africa and Taiwan. Lastly, as far as literature is concerned, it examines the writings of Coetzee and Wu in order to show how their texts depict the ecological other as a way of contesting postcolonial identity politics.

Pelotas/RS, with the central question being the relationship between the material world and the human production and reproduction of african - religious practices. The specific objective is to produce an ethnography of prepared drums and objects participating in initiation rituals or obligations to question on human and non-human relationships within the surveyed collective, promoting an archeology of the present. I seek to produce an archeology that dissolves the time limits, since they are buildings of modern ontology that ignores the interrelationships between past and present.

PROBLÉM HMOTNÉHO SVĚTA: VIRGINIE WOOLFOVÁ JAKO NEDUALISTICKÁ A PROCESUÁLNÍ MYSLITELKA / THE PROBLEM OF THE FIXITY OF TABLES: VIRGINIA WOOLF AS A NON-DUALIST AND PROCESS-ORIENTED THINKER

Krajíčková, Veronika January 2021 (has links)
1 Abstract This doctoral thesis focuses on the analogies between Virginia Woolf's "personal philosophy" and Alfred North Whitehead's process philosophy, or in his own words "philosophy of organism." The thesis does not claim that Whitehead's thought directly influenced Woolf's fiction, rather, it makes use of a zeitgeist model. The two contemporaries shared the rejection of long-established dualisms, particularly the Cartesian mind-body dualism, the binaries of subject and object, animate and inanimate matter, the human and the nonhuman, and last but not least the individual and the community. Interested in the philosophical enquiry into the problem of reality and the visible world, Woolf redefines the notion of "things" in her fiction and adopts the processist view that objects may be defined as clusters of events, which are not separate from the perceiving subject but interrelated with it. Moreover, Woolf illustrates her interest in the natural world in most of her works and often suggests that what we normally think to be inert and lifeless matter, may, in fact, also have some proto-conscious, or proto- experiential, qualities like Whitehead's "actual occasions." The second part of the thesis focuses on Woolf's attempt to overcome one's individual identity in favour of adopting a more inclusive and...

Imagerie in vivo de la réponse immune locale à la vaccination par voie intradermique à l’aide d’un ADN plasmidique associée à l’électroporation chez le macaque cynomolgus / In vivo imaging of the local immune response to intradermal vaccination with a plasmid DNA associated to skin electroporation in cynomolgus monkeys

Todorova, Biliana 26 November 2014 (has links)
In vivo electroporation (EP) is used as a strategy to improve the immune response induced by DNA vaccines. However, its local effect on the innate immune cells has not been fully described. We developed in vivo fluorescence imaging approaches to highlight the cell behavior in the site of vaccination in macaques. Our results show that the local EP not only increases the amount and the distribution of the vaccine antigen, but also induces the mobilization and migration of Langerhans cells. Furthermore, EP causes the recruitment of leukocytes into the skin and subcutaneous tissue and promotes the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. These early events that result from the use of the EP as a delivery system for DNA vaccines, highlight its potential as a vaccine adjuvant.
