Forensic Dentistry and its Application in Age Estimation from the Teeth using a Modified Demirjian SystemBlenkin, Matthew Robert Barclay January 2005 (has links)
The estimation of age at time of death is often an important step in the identification of human remains. If this age can be accurately estimated, it will significantly narrow the field of possible identities that will have to be compared to the remains in order to establish a positive identification. Some of the more accurate methods of age estimation, in the juvenile and younger adult, have been based on the assessment of the degree of dental development as it relates to chronological age. The purpose of this current study was to test the applicability of one such system, the Demirjian system, to a Sydney sample population, and to develop and test age prediction models using a large sample of Sydney children (1624 girls, 1637 boys). The use of the Demirjian standards resulted in consistent overestimates of chronological age in children under the age of 14 years by as much as a mean of 0.97 years, and underestimates of chronological age in children over 14 years by as much as a mean of 2.18 years in 16 year-old females. Of the alternative predictive models derived from the Sydney sample, those that provided the most accurate age estimates are applicable for the age ranges 2-14 years, with a coefficient of determination value of R-square=0.94 and a 95% confidence interval of 1.8 years. The Sydney based standards provided significantly different and more accurate estimates of age for that sample when compared to the published standards of Demirjian.

Klinikchefens uppfattning om tandhygienistens kompetensAndersson, Linda, Paulsson, Lina January 2010 (has links)
The aim of the study was to examine the competence of dental hygienists among Clinic Director´s within the Public Dental Service and Private dentists in the county of Skåne . The study was quantitative and consisted of an electronic questionnaire sent out to all Clinic Directors in the county of Skåne. A total of five hundred and thirty eight questionnaires were sent out. The inclusion criteria were the Clinic directors who employed dental hygienists who had obtained their professional degree during the last four years. Twenty nine Clinic directors responded to the study. The results showed that in general clinic directors are pleased and feel that dental hygienists are proficient in periodontology and dental caries diagnostics. There were two clinic directors who felt that dental hygienists should have more knowledge in the fields of endodontics and pedodontics. The Clinic directors were asked if they wanted to add a certain skill or specialty to the competence of dental hygienists. Two of the clinic directors said that they would like to see dental hygienists be able to measure blood and sugar levels if needed. In conclusion, this study shows that most of the clinic directors thought that the dental hygienists had good knowledge and skills within their operating range. The result of this study must be interpreted with caution because of the low response rate.

PRÓ/PET-SAÚDE III e o perfil formativo do odontólogo / PRÓ/PET-SAÚDE III and the formation profile of odontologistFreire, Cláudia Patrícia de Lima 07 July 2014 (has links)
This research discusses the formation issues in Odontology in the National Program of Formation Reorientation in Health together with the Educational Program Working for Health (Pró/PET-Saúde III 2012-2014), which has as general objective the investigation of the changes in formation profile of the Odontology student of the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL), from the participation of the course in this program. The research was qualitative and occurred in two stages: first, the reading was done to contextualization of the National Curriculum Guidelines for Health and Odontology, National Policy of Permanent Education in Health, Educational Curriculum Proposal for the Odontology Course of UFAL, and projects and Pró/PET-Saúde III reports; in the second stage, the focal group was conducted with a tutor, preceptors and Odontology students participants of the Pró/PET-Saúde III from the UFAL Campus, Maceió. To conduce the focal group, a script was used with guiding questions related to the formation profile in Odontology, formation in Odontology and the participation in the Pró/PET-Saúde III. After obtaining the data, they were transcribed, read and an analysis was performed by categories. We conclude that the participation in programs for Formation Reorientation appears as an alternative to reduce the imbalance existent between that which is desired and what exists in the forming context in Odontology and what the Pró/PET Saúde III contributes to in the practice for the effectiveness of a Formative Profile in Odontology consistent with the proposals of SUS, of the National Curriculum Guidelines for Odontology and of the National Policy of Permanent Education in Health even though advances in the political and collective discussions of these proposals are needed.

During endodontic preparation procedure, the goal of any operator is to perform a centering shaping with the shortest possible working time, regardless of their experience or the technique used. The challenges encountered for performing the ideal shaping may include difficulties such as root canal curvatures and the inexperience of the performer. The single file systems have shown favorable results regarding their shape ability and working time. In addition, this technique has simplicity in its \"modus-operandi\", encouraging studies that observe its application at the beginning of the endodontic practice. In order to observe single file systems behavior\'s in this niche of operators, was selected undergraduate students. In order to evaluate 12 different operators, 48 simulated root canals (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland) were used, where each operator was instrumented: 1 with a manual acorde Machado technique, 1 with Wave One Gold Primary system (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues), 1 with ProDesign Logic system 25.06 (Easy Equip., Belo Horizonte, Brazil) in continuous rotatory movement and 1 with ProDesign Logic system 25.06 (Easy Equip., Belo Horizonte, Brazil) in reciprocating movement (n = 48). ). After instrumentation, the shape ability produced was evaluated by cententering ratios and working time criteria. As for the quality of the preparation, through superimposed images and with the aid of the program Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 (Adobe Systems, San Jose, CA), centering values were obtained at the legths of 1 to 9mm of the simulated root canal. Working time was assesed excluding instruments exchanges and canal irrigation. For the comparative analysis of the working time between groups, the Anova 1 factor test with correction and post-test of Tukey for the multiple comparisons was used. The centering ability was analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test with the Dunn post-test for multiple comparisons. As a result, the Prodesign Logic group in rotatory motion (ROL) presented the shortest instrumentation time, followed by the Wave One Gold (WOG) group and, with the highest indexes, Prodesign Logic in reciprocating motion (REL) and manual acorde Machado techqnique (MAN) groups (p <0.05). Differences between centering ratios were found at 1, 4 and 5 mm of simulated root canals (p <0.05). At 1mm, apical region, WOG and ROL groups performed more centering preparations than MAN and REL groups. At 4mm, region of curvature, WOG group presented the most centering ability when compared to REL, ROL and MAN. Still on curvature portion, at 5mm, a greater centering ratio was found in WOG when compared to MAN. Considering all lengths of the simulated root canal, WOG system presented better shape ability and the ROL group the shortest working times. By observing shape ability associated with instrumentation time, was possible to conclude that Wave One Gold system is indicated for beginners of endodontic practice
